Our Pillars Scholarship

Service and Community Engagement

Friendship

Our community realizes that excelling in academics is a top priority for all students. Fraternity and Sorority Life offers a wide variety of academic advantages including tutoring programs, peer advisement, and scholarship initiatives and incentives. Scholastic achievement is something focused on and celebrated within the Greek community each and every day. In the spring of 2014, the All Greek GPA was well over the All University average. Being a part of a Greek organization helps promote excellence in the classroom instead of deterring from it. Students are also required to maintain a certain GPA in order to remain active in their chapter. The grade point average of each organization is ranked, published and available on our website for all who are interested.

One of the founding principles of each Greek organization is giving of yourself in service to the community in which we live. Thousands of dollars are raised and hours donated are performed by our students each semester. In the spring of 2014, our Greek community donated more than $15,500 and almost 8,000 hours. While each chapter has their own non-profit organization they support, the overall Fraternity and Sorority Life community supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We are planning a Dance Marathon in November 2014 in which all proceeds will be donated to granting a wish for a worthy child in the Fox Valley region.

Starting a new beginning at the University can prove to be challenging when creating new friendships. Fraternity and Sorority Life helps provide a connection to students who may be traveling to the campus alone or for those who are coming with friendships from high school but are looking to expand their circle. Fraternities and sororities are a vibrant part of campus participating in Homecoming, Winter Carnival, alumni events, parent weekends and social events. These events provide opportunities to meet a wide variety of people with whom you may strike up life long relationships with. You will always have your brothers and sisters to count on to be there for a meal, long talk, help with homework or to have some fun!

Our History Since 1776, fraternities and sororities have been developing bonds in collegians that last a lifetime and create a home away from home. The experiences encountered in a Greek organization will prepare you for the real world and put a vast network of alumni at your fingertips for job searching. Greek Letter organizations came to UW Oshkosh in 1960. They have existed on campus for 54 years and have a rich history of developing students, creating change on campus, and producing a large number of alumni who remain connected to UW Oshkosh and their chapters beyond their time as an undergraduate. 4

Glossary

Character

Leadership

Fraternities and sororities were founded upon principles and values that are meant to develop strong moral character in their members. Each chapter has member development programs, alongside Fraternity and Sorority Life events, that focus on the growth of our members professionally and personally. Fraternity and sorority members work to lead values-based lives while growing throughout their collegiate experience.

There are many areas on campus that provide leadership training and experience. However, Greek Life is different in that not many students are provided the opportunity to lead over 20-55 of their peers. They learn professional skills of organization, time management, conflict resolution, fiscal responsibility, public speaking, meeting management and so many more. These organizations provide a network of thousands of alumni who are also there to help build those skills, provide networking opportunities throughout and after college and model how to be leaders in society. Did you know that of the nation’s 50 largest corporations, 43 are headed by fraternity or sorority members?

Tips for Recruitment 1.

Before you arrive on campus, do some research. Visit the University’s website at reeve.uwosh.edu/greek and research the local chapters. What types of community service do they do? What other campus organizations do they belong to? Get on the inter/national organizations' websites. What are their missions? What types of leadership development do they offer?

2. During recruitment, take notes. Write down names, what you discussed and anything that will help you remember your visit after you leave each event. These notes will help when you make your decisions about accepting invitations to later events. 3. Keep an open mind. Be interested regardless of whether or not you think you like that specific chapter. You may decide after spending time with the group or meeting different members that you found a great fit for you. 4. Be polite. If you are not interested, you should still remain positive and thank them for taking the time to meet you and host these events. 5. Ask questions. This helps guide the conversation and is a sign of your interest. Develop questions in advance if you feel nervous. 6. Be mature in your decision making. Be realistic about which group you feel most comfortable with, and do not be swayed by others' opinions. 7. Dress correctly for the type of event you are attending. Some may require nicer clothes, some may just be normal every day clothes, and some may be athletic apparel. If you are not sure, reach out and ask someone! We are all here to make this process as smooth and easy as possible. 8. Be yourself. The men and women want to get to know you, not a pretend version of you. 9. Get plenty of sleep. You want to feel rested, so you can enjoy the conversations and the process. 10. Smile and have fun! Recruitment is meant to be an easy process and for you to get to meet many new people while connecting you to UW Oshkosh.

6

FAQs How many hours a week will I spend participating in fraternity and sorority activities? The average amount of time you will spend will truly depend on your commitment to your respective chapter. During your new member period, you will have new member meetings, special programs to attend, and other chapter activities. As an initiated member, the majority of your time will be spent in chapter meetings, studying, attending social activities, participating in philanthropy events, and doing community service. What’s important to understand about Greek Life is that you get out of it what you put into it. Which chapter is the best to join? All of the chapters offer different incentives and opportunities through their membership. It really depends on what you are looking for and what each has to offer for your individual needs. The best way to find out which chapter is right for you is to go through the recruitment process and to keep an open mind throughout the process. How long does the New Member period last? The length of new member periods, like many other things, differ from chapter to chapter. The new member period can last anywhere from four weeks to an entire semester because each chapter has a different new member program. This is one of the questions you’ll have to be sure to ask while going through the recruitment process! What do I do if I go through recruitment and end up deciding Greek Life is not for me? You are under no obligation to join a chapter just because you participate in recruitment. You are encouraged to participate in recruitment because it is an excellent opportunity for you to learn about the many aspects of Greek Life and to meet new friends. You can also always come back to the recruitment process in a later semester if it just isn't the right time for you.

Fraternity Recruitment The Recruitment Process

Fraternity recruitment kicks off Monday, September 1! This informal process allows all men interested in joining the fraternity community the opportunity to meet every chapter at UWO. The process is three weeks long and will provide you multiple opportunities to meet with each fraternity to learn about their chapter, meet their men, and connect with others who are going through the recruitment process alongside you. We encourage you to bring new or old friends and your roommate but don’t feel like you cannot come and check it out for yourself. There will be plenty of men for you to talk with and get to know throughout the process.

All Fraternity Information Night

Fraternity Meet and Greets Part 1

Fraternity Meet and Greets Part 2

Want to learn more about fraternity life and meet the men in our fraternity community? This event provides just that. This night is not mandatory but is highly encouraged as all fraternities will be represented and you can spend time getting to know them in a very fun environment.

This will be the first chance you have to meet with fraternities on an individual level. Each chapter will host an event with open invitations to anyone who would like to attend. We encourage you to try to attend as many events as possible and meet all of the fraternities at least once. Do one of the organization’s events interfere with your schedule? Feel free to email that chapter’s recruitment chair, located on each of their websites and Facebook pages to set up a time to get together outside of the structured events.

Wonder what the inside of a fraternity house looks like? Make sure to visit each fraternity on their specific openhouse night. Keep in mind that not all organizations have houses but this shouldn’t affect your final decision. Come prepared with questions you may have about their specific chapter or our fraternity community in general that will help you make a decision on which chapter you fit best with. You will have an option to start narrowing down your choice of fraternities to continue visiting with after these events.

Preference Night

Monday, September 15 *Various Times/Locations

This is the first night we ask you to start narrowing down your choices in fraternity. Each chapter will host an event this evening and we ask that you attend no more than 2 or 3 events of the fraternities that you feel the closest connection to and that you can see yourself fitting into. You will learn more about our different fraternities’ history, uniqueness, and will continue to form friendships and bonds with the men in each group. This will be the last night of open invitation rounds.

Invite Only Events

Wednesday, September 17 *Various Times/Locations During the invite only events, you will be invited back to the fraternities that are interested in you joining their fraternity. You may receive this invite through paper invite, email, text message, personal conversation, or many other ways depending on the fraternity. If you receive a request to

REEVE.UWOSH.EDU/GREEK

attend an invite only event, this means that the fraternity is interested in possibly extending you a bid, which is a formal invitation to join their fraternity. It is highly encouraged that you try your best to attend their event that evening. If you cannot, but have been invited and are still interested, you can reach out to the fraternity recruitment chair or president and he can set up times to meet with you outside of the event. Keep in mind that this is a mutual selection process, so while you are deciding which chapter matches you best, the men in each chapter are also trying to figure out which men would represent their fraternity with the highest standards.

and some may wait a bit to narrow down their selection. Be honest with the fraternities and let them know that you either accept their invitation or would like some time to think about it. Fraternity men understand that this process is about mutual selection and they hope that you want to join their organization as much as they want you to. Some men know right away that fraternity life is for them while some men may need more time to decide which fraternity they would like to join or if fraternity life is for them. While we hope and encourage you to join our organizations right away, fraternities recruit 365 days a year so you can decide to join at any time throughout the semester or year.

Philip Aiello VP of Recruitment for Fraternity Life [email protected]

Thursday, September 18 *Various Times/Locations The informal fraternity recruitment process concludes with a recommended bid day. This is the first opportunity fraternities have to extend to you a formal invitation to join their chapter. Please note that this is only a recommended date. Some fraternities will choose to extend bids right away as they know they would like to see you in their chapter

* The dates and times of these events will be posted on the Fraternity and Sorority Life website (reeve.uwosh.edu/greek) and pamphlets will be passed out at the fraternity tables at Taste of Oshkosh and the Titan Backyard BBQ. Make sure to get your copy and visit each fraternity so you can start to learn what fraternity life is all about.

As you get settled into your new home, be sure to take a moment and reflect on what it took for you to get this far. Welcome to UW Oshkosh! Entering college can be a challenging time for some. You are in a new place with new people. Some may be shy and reserved. Some may go out and seek every opportunity. No matter which person you are, I hope you choose to give Greek Life a try.

fraternity men. We are men with values and character. Needless to say, I am still here having fun and those men I first met, I now call my brothers. I have learned lifelong lessons and more importantly grew personally. I encourage you to do the same. Just come around until you stop having fun.

College is about the journey and about change. Make the best out of your new opportunities. I remember a fraternity man approached me near the start of school and asked me to try it out. I had the typical stereotypes in my head so I was unsure. However, he said, just try it and you can stop coming when you stop having fun. So, I tried it. Multicultural Fraternity & Sorority Intake Membership intake is the membership selection process conducted by multicultural fraternity and sorority organizations. Early in the fall semester, these organizations present information about their individual chapters for prospective members. The first informational event for each multicultural chapter is noted on this page. Multicultural fraternities and sororities require academic achievement typically completion of at least 12 hours of college credit with a minimum GPA of 2.5, community service, and good character of students interested in joining. Such requirements are designed to promote

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

FBS

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated was founded January 9, 1914 at Howard University in Washington DC by Most Honorable Big Brother Abrahm L. Taylor, Most Honorable Big brother Leonard F. Morris, and Most Honorable Big Brother Charles I. Brown. Historically, Phi Beta Sigma was created as an outlet for young men of color to express themselves in an empowering way. Doing so, Men of Sigma represent three key traits; Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service.

Pi Upsilon chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated. Each member of our fraternity wears its royal blue and pure white colors with pride. The work each member puts into the fraternity gives this pride great meaning. Our brotherhood is looking for hard working, educated males who strive for greatness while accepting nothing less. If you have any questions regarding Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated, feel free to approach any of our men in BLU on campus.

Our prestigious fraternity was brought to the UWO community on June 10, 1984 by Brothers Melvin Grant, Jesse Greenlee, Ted Morton, James Zolicoffer, and Keith Gibson. These five charter members established what is now known as the UW Oshkosh’s “Big and Buff”
