The mission of the Fort Douglas Military Museum is to:

 

PRESERVE and interpret the history of Fort Douglas EDUCATE visitors about the role of the military in the growth and development of Utah, and HONOR all Utahns who have served their country in uniform.

 Through exhibits, educational programming and publications, the Museum seeks to engage and inform the public about Utah's rich military heritage. The tour will begin with lunch catered by Chartwell’s and served at the Museum. Following lunch, a guided tour will give visitors a view of the major exhibits. After the guided tour, Emeriti Club members are free to explore the Museum in more depth. The cost of the tour and lunch is $15.00. To reserve a place in the tour, fill out the coupon and send it with your check to Jeanne Robson, Treasurer.

Utah Symphony 2013-14 Finishing Touches Series Deadline Extended In discussions with the Utah Symphony, it was discovered the Emeriti Club may offer an extended deadline to Finishing Touches. The new deadline for reserving tickets is May 8, 2013. If you wish to participate in this unusual symphony experience, please send your reservation and check to Jeanne Robson (coupon on the last page of this newsletter). Once again the Utah Symphony is offering discount tickets for the Finishing Touches Series next year. These concerts are actually final rehearsals for the program to be presented that evening, and are rather informal. Like the musicians, you’re invited to come as you are. Parking in the lot across the street from Abravanel Hall, next door at the Plaza Hotel, or City Creek Mall is inexpensive and convenient. All events are Friday mornings at 10:00 AM, and if you get there early, free light refreshments are available. The price will be the same as last year $44 for the package of four concerts. This is a great deal as prices (for us) haven’t increased. 2013-14 FINISHING TOUCHES SCHEDULE October 25:

Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25; Dukas “Fanfare” from La Peri and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”; Sibelius, Symphony # 5 December 6: Schubert, Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished”; Dutilleux, “The Starry Night”; Tchaikovsky, Symphony No.3 “Polish” February 7: Mozart, Mass In C “Trinity”; Shostakovich, Symphony No. 7 “Leningrad” May 23: Tchaikovsky, “Variations On A Rococco Theme; Neilsen, Symphony No.6 “Sinfonia Semplice”; Rachmaninoff, “Symphonic Dances” Please fill out the coupon in this letter and send with your check to the U of U Emeriti Club at: Jeanne Robson Your tickets will be mailed to you around mid July or August, or as soon as they become available from the Utah Symphony’s ticket office. We hope you can join us for our trip to three of the most beautiful cities in Europe; Prague, Vienna and Budapest, during a very pleasant time of the year. We'll spend three nights in each city with free time to make fun discoveries at our own pace. Sightseeing highlights in Prague include visits to St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague Castle, Old Town Square and the historic Charles Bridge. We'll spend a half-day in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, on our way to Vienna where we will view the Presidential Palace and the quaint Old Town section. In Vienna we'll have a guided tour of the Parliament, the Hofburg Palace, the Opera House and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. In Budapest, we'll view the Chain Bridge and visit the UNESCO-listed Castle Hill district and Fisherman’s Bastion. Since Cheryll May, our trip organizer, is a former art museum curator, you can be sure that the art and architecture freaks in the group will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the artistic treasures of each capital. The official tour guide will have many additional suggestions for the best restaurants, shopping, and other pursuits. The base fee is $2085.25 per person (double occupancy) plus airfare and mandatory trip insurance and airport transfers. The fee includes first-class hotel accommodations in all three cities, touring by luxury motor coach, a multi-lingual tour director, and local guides in Vienna and Budapest. A FAREWELL FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR This newsletter is the last of the 2012 2013 academic year. The first mission of the newsletter is to keep you informed about the monthly luncheon and guest presentation. Your Board tries mightily to find people and ideas of interest and timeliness. The second mission is to keep you informed of emeriti doings. This area is largely dependent on people sending bits of news about themselves and others to the Newsletter Editor. Another mission is to find entertaining and informative activities. This year the programs of the School of Music and their vouchers have been an extra addition to other elements we have done for years. This editor is signing off for a couple of months of golf and travel and not bothering people about meeting my deadlines. Have a great and enjoyable summer. Dennis Alexander
