YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1~SATURDAY~APRIL 25 SACRAMENTO/ EN ROUTE Your journey begins as you board your flight from Sacramento to Istanbul, Turkey. (Meals Aloft)

DAY 2~SUNDAY~APRIL 26 ISTANBUL On arrival in Istanbul you are met by your Classic Escapes representative and transferred to your hotel. Established in the 7th century B.C. by the Megaran leader Byzas, Istanbul is the world’s only city that bridges two continents, Europe and Asia. The balance of the day is free to settle in and begin exploring independently this sophisticated city known for wonderful Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. From your location in the heart of the city it is easy to immerse in Istanbul’s life and culture. We suggest strolling Taksim Square with magnificent views across Bosphorus, Taksim Park and walk the short distance to Ataturk Cultural Center (AKM / Atatürk Kültür Merkezi), a multipurpose venue housing the State Opera and Ballet and true icon of contemporary Istanbul. Tonight, enjoy a welcome cocktail and introduction to Turkey. Your cozy hotel is conveniently located in Taksim, Old Istanbul’s pulsating heart. The hotel, with its elegant façade and modern décor, offers a wonderful atmosphere and friendly staff. Amenities include air-conditioner, satellite system television, minibar, and hairdryer. The hotel is close to the shopping and entertainment district of Istiklal Avenue and its bustling side streets, the Ataturk Cultural Center and Sultanahmet, cultural heart of the historic city. Overnight at the ISTANBUL MIDTOWN HOTEL. (Meals Aloft, Cocktail Party) www.midtown-hotel.com/

DAY 3~MONDAY~APRIL 27 ISTANBUL Start your adventure today with a cruise of the Bosphorus, the winding strait that separates Europe from Asia. Enjoy the view of wooden villas, marble palaces and ancient fortresses along the shore. Arrive on the European side and visit the legendary Topkapi Palace. The palace is a perfect example of Ottoman architecture. Built on 80 acres between the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn, this sprawling complex - which at its peak housed 4,000 people including the sultan, his court and harem - was also seat of the Ottoman Empire government. Your tour includes the palace’s main highlights such as gardens and spectacular display of jewelry, weaponry and calligraphy examples and priceless Chinese porcelains. The palace’s Treasury still houses the world’s seventh largest diamond, the pearshaped “Spoonmaker’s Diamond”. (Harem section is included.) Conclude at the Grand Bazaar, Turkey’s largest and oldest covered market. Browse Turkish handicrafts, Oriental carpets, rare jewels and inexpensive trinkets. With more than 4,000 shops and ninety two streets named after trades - gold and silver sellers, carpet sellers, booksellers etc. – it makes for a unique shopping experience.

Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing. They are subject to change.

After your visit to the palace and bazaar, drive along the coast of the Golden Horn overlooking the walls and churches of the Byzantine period and enjoy a lecture on "Ottoman History” at the historic Galata Tower, built in 1348 by the Genoese. Tonight, enjoy a welcome dinner. Overnight at the ISTANBUL MIDTOWN HOTEL. (B,L,D)

DAY 4~TUESDAY~APRIL 28 ISTANBUL Today’s tour will highlight the city’s Byzantine and Ottoman treasures. Begin at the early 17th century Blue Mosque, masterpiece of Turkish architecture of rare proportion and elegance. Admire its six slender minarets and the interior masterfully decorated with over 20,000 glazed blue porcelain tiles and enormous, intricate silk carpets. Continue to the Hippodrome, one of the Byzantine Empire’s largest chariot race grounds, site of athletic events, victory celebrations and political activities. Next is iconic Hagia Sophia (Church of Divine Wisdom), today a museum. Built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian as a triumph of Christianity and true symbol of Byzantium, Hagia Sophia was the grandest church of Christendom until its conversion into a mosque by Sultan Mehmet II. After the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 the Ottomans added minarets, buttresses and calligraphy medallions and - due to the prohibition of Islam to represent human figures - plastered over the Byzantine mosaics (several have now been cleared and restored). After lunch visit the Asiatic side of Istanbul; including Beylerbeyi Palace and the Camlica Hill. A lecture presentation on "Women in Turkish History and Culture" will be provided at your hotel, followed by a special dinner planned with Turkish families at a local seafood restaurant in the Kumkapi district. Overnight at the ISTANBUL MIDTOWN HOTEL. (B,D)

DAY 5~WEDNESDAY~ APRIL 29 ISTANBUL/ANKARA/CAPPADOCIA Transfer to the airport for your early flight to Ankara, the capital of modern Turkey since 1923. The city of Ankara lies in the center of Anatolia on the eastern edge of the great, high Anatolian Plateau, at an altitude of 2,788 feet above sea level. It is the center of the province of the same name, which is a predominantly fertile wheat steppe-land with forested areas in its northeast region and agricultural lands in its south. The town, once an important trading center on the caravan route to the east, had declined in importance by the 19th century. It became an important center again when Kemal Ataturk chose it as the base from which to direct the War of Liberation. In consequence of its role in the war and its strategic position, it was declared as the capital of the new Turkish Republic on 13th of October, 1923. Ankara now has a population of over three million.

Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing. They are subject to change.

Visit the splendid museum of the Anatolian Civilizations also known as the Hittite Museum, with its unique collection of ancient art, the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. There are orthostatic reliefs, large sculptures, clay tablets and numerous smaller items, from sites such as Bogazkale (Hattusas), Alacahüyük, Alisar, Karatepe, Karkamis, Kültepe (Kanes), Malatya (Arslantepe) and Ankara. Visit the Mausoleum of Ataturk, “the Father of Modern Turkey.” The stones of the Mausoleum are purposely of uneven length to keep pedestrians' heads bowed as they approach the tomb. After lunch, drive to the surrealistic area of Cappadocia. For millions of years, the mighty volcanoes of the Central Anatolian Plateau erupted and spewed their contents across the land that would become the cradle of civilization. Blessed with a moderate climate and fertile soil, one of the world's earliest known communities was founded 10,000 years ago in the area and mankind's first nature painting was found here, which portrays the most recent eruption of Hasan Dagi almost 9,000 years ago. The unusual volcanic landscape has been relentlessly carved by nature and by the people who have lived here – ‘fairy chimneys,' cones and strange rock formations have been sculpted by wind and rain while subterranean towns were excavated by a populace seeking shelter from the conquerors who crisscrossed the wide open steppes of the Plateau. Ancient Anatolian tribes, Assyrians, Hittites, Phrygians, Turkic tribes from Central Asia, Mongols, Persians, Syrians, Arabs, Kurds, Armenians, Slavs, Greeks, Romans and Western Europeans have all passed through leaving behind some of their traditions as well as their genes and rendering Cappadocians as exotic as their surreal surroundings. The valley became an important center of monasticism that lasted from the 4th to the 14th centuries. There are an estimated 150 churches and several monasteries just in the canyon between the villages of Ihlara and Selime. A walk through the tranquil 9 mile gorge is a delight. The dappled light under poplars and wild olive trees as well as the constant murmur of the water provide relief from an unrelenting sun and the monotony of endless wheat fields that make up the Cappadocian landscape. Near villages, the river continues to be the focus of village life: women wash their laundry amid chatter and laughter, children splash nearby and shepherds bring their animals for a drink. With its original architecture in perfect harmony with the natural look of this very special region of Turkey, Dilek Kaya hotel is a new charming cave hotel with 89 traditionally decorated rooms with free cable internet connection and flat-screen television and minibar. Equally impressive are the bathrooms, which are large and modern, equipped with a hairdryer and a shower. Guests can enjoy a rich menu of Turkish cuisine at hotel’s restaurants. The hotel has an indoor and outdoor pool where you can relax after a long day. Overnight at the DILEK KAYA HOTEL (B,D) www.dilekkayaotel.com

DAY 6~THURSDAY~APRIL 30 CAPPADOCIA Very early in the morning, you will have a chance for an optional hot air balloon ride ($235 per person) to fully enjoy this unique panorama of the wonderful fairy chimneys and valleys of Cappadocia. Return to the lodge for breakfast and then join your group for a visit to the rock-carved churches in the Goreme and Zelve Valleys, where chapels and monasteries were hollowed into rocks as hiding places during the Byzantine era. Vividly preserved during the ensuing centuries, the original frescoes celebrate the beliefs of the early Christians. The only light that permeates the churches is the natural light that filters in through the entrances. The traditional village of Uchisar is surrounded by rock pinnacles. See the underground city of Derinkuyu, where thousands of men sheltered themselves from enemy attacks in this land of

"Fairy Chimneys." These underground cities were so well hidden that they went undiscovered until the 1960s. Overnight at the DILEK KAYA HOTEL. (B,L,D)

DAY 7~FRIDAY~MAY 1 CAPPADOCIA/KONYA/ANTALYA A three-hour drive through the spectacular heart of central Anatolia takes you to the holy city of Konya, one of the world's most ancient cities and Turkey's most religious site. After lunch, visit the shrine of Mevlana, the great mystic, who inspired the rituals of the "whirling Dervishes." Then depart for Antalya, the capital of the Mediterranean coast, passing though the Taurus Mountains along the way. Still standing on the cliffs that surround Antalya are the ancient city walls and ramparts built by the Greeks. In town stands the 13th-century Alaeddin Mosque and Hadrian's Gate which was built in honor of the Emperor's visit in A.D. 130. For the next two nights, stay at luxurious and comfortable resort style hotel, located right on the coast of the city center. Ramada Plaza Hotel is located conveniently in the part of Old City that overlooks a large part of Antalya as well as matchless beauty of blue and green sea. The historical old town, marina, famous night clubs of Antalya, bars, restaurants, theaters, major shopping malls, and historical Anatolian civilizations museum are all located within a walking distance from the hotel. Ramada Plaza boasts with 223 seaview rooms each including LCD TV, free wireless internet, central air conditioner, safe, minibar, shower and bathtub, as well as tea/coffee making stations. You can also find a large outdoor and an indoor pools, sauna, Turkish bath, steam room, resting rooms with hot tubs, and a fitness hall all operated at international level and available to serve you. Overnight at the RAMADA PLAZA HOTEL. (B,L,D) www.ramada.com

DAY 8~SATURDAY~MAY 2 ANTALYA/PERGE/ASPENDOS Depart for a visit of Perge and the nearby Aspendos. This region, known in antiquity as Pamphylia, was famous for its Greco-Roman monuments. Perge was a city of considerable importance during the Hellenistic period. It is also the place where St. Paul preached his first sermon. The theater of Aspendos, built in the 2nd century, is one of the best preserved in the world. This 15,000-capacity theater has remained intact for 1,800 years while war, earthquakes, and time have destroyed the surrounding monuments. You will have lunch at Aspendos restaurant famous for the traditional Mediterranean kebabs and pastries. The afternoon will be at leisure to enjoy the Mediterranean coastline or to visit the museum of Antalya with its abundance of historical and archaeological treasures. Take time to explore the hall of Emperors and Classical Art along with a stunning mosaic collection from Xanthos and extraordinary finds from the Karain Caves, which date back to the Old Stone Age. Overnight at the RAMADA PLAZA HOTEL. (B,L)

DAY 9~SUNDAY~MAY 3 ANTALYA/APHRODISIAS/KUSADASI In the morning depart to Aphrodisias, the city of the Goddess of Love, though it was known as the center for the arts. Visit the well preserved stadium, the Odeon, the theater and the agora. On your way, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and continue to the port city of Kusadasi. Upon arrival to Kusadasi you will have time at leisure, where you can enjoy yourself to the fullest.

Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing. They are subject to change.

DAY 10~MONDAY~MAY 4 KUSADASI~EPHESUS Today explore Ephesus, one of the most important and famous ancient cities, and the most complete ancient city to be excavated. Relics found in Ephesus date this city's existence to at least 3,000 B.C. This coastal city was coveted by conquerors throughout the centuries. In A.D. 53, St. Paul attempted to spread Christianity in Ephesus. When the harbor of Ephesus silted up, the majority of the city relocated to the nearby area surrounding the basilica of St. John, built by the Emperor Justinian. Visit the house of Virgin Mary which is located on top of the Nightingale Hill and which can be reached after a bendy but very scenic drive up the hill. Enjoy lunch at the delightful village of Sirince located in the hills near Ephesus, with historic houses facing a peaceful landscape of vineyards and olive groves. You will continue touring with a visit to the Museum of Ephesus and then end your tour with a visit to the Basilica of St. John where he was buried. Time will be allotted to explore by foot wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets. Overnight at DOUBLE TREE BY HILTON. (B,L)

DAY 11~TUESDAY~MAY 5 KUSADASI/PERGAMUM/ASSOS Leave Kusadasi behind as you drive along the coast of the Aegean Sea to the ancient city of Pergamum. Capital of a prosperous independent kingdom of western Asia Minor (part of modern day Turkey), Pergamum was already thriving in the centuries preceding Christ. Its kings built impressive palaces and temples, a library and medical facilities that made it one of antiquity’s most renowned cultural and political centers. It was Ephesus’ commercial and Alexandria of Egypt’s artistic rival and the place where parchment paper (pergamena) was invented. Its Library, second only to the one in Alexandria, at its peak housed 200,000 volumes. Later, as part of the Roman Empire, because of strategic location and importance, it became Rome’s administrative center for the province of Asia. In the years following the death of Christ, by the time the New Testament’s Book of Revelation (Apocalypse) was written, Pergamum was included amongst the Seven Churches.

Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing. They are subject to change.

Pergamum’s dominant feature is the Acropolis, the hill where the highest portion of the city was built, which commands spectacular view of the surrounding region. Visit to the remains of the 2nd century A.D marble Temple of Trajan. Dedicated to the powerful Roman emperor, it sits next to the remains of the Library. Nearby is the sprawling 4th century B.C. Asclepion (a modern ‘health spa’), an important medical center where to heal and socialize. Dedicated to the Greek and Roman god of health, medicine and healing, Asclepius, it was expanded over the centuries until, under Emperor Hadrian (2nd century A.D.) it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Continue to Assos and ascend through the cobblestone streets of the village to the Temple of Athena built in the classical period and overlooking the Greek island of Lesbos. Once a city important enough for Saint Paul to visit it on his third missionary journey, Assos never recovered its early vibrancy and slid into a steady decline from which it has only really recovered in the last ten years. From the long centuries of the middle Ages and early Ottoman times, only a mosque and bridge survive. Nzliahan Boutique Hotel is located on a magnificent antique resort. Recently renovated, the hotel now has a capacity of 37 rooms and 80 guests. All rooms are equipped with a TV, minibar, telephone, air conditioning, and baths that are adorned with the best Turkish Tile Art. In the evening enjoy the famous Turkish hookah and taste rich coffee at Eden Port Café. Overnight at the NAZLIHAN HOTEL. (B,L,D) http://www.assosedengroup.com

DAY 12~WEDNESDAY~MAY 6 CANAKKALE/TROY/GALLIPOLI/ISTANBUL Depart Assos for legendary Troy, site of the tragedy of Paris and the beautiful Helen. Troy is a city which existed over 4,000 years and known as the center of ancient civilizations. Troy is located in Hisarlik near Canakkale province where the remains of this once-great city can be visited. What were left are the remains of the destruction of Schliemann, the famous German archaeologist or a treasure hunter as some people call him. In 1871, wealthy industrialist Heinrich Schliemann used Homer's Iliad to find the ancient city. Troy is one of the most famous cities in the history, remembering us Hector, Achilles and Achaean Greeks, the sake of Helen, Paris, Agamemnon and Priam. Its story is written in every language, Trojan heroes, Achilles' heel and Odyssey became figures in poems. From Alexander the Great to Lord Byron, many important figures of the history stood on the site of the great heroes. However, people always wondered whether the Trojan War happened or not, or if there was really a wooden horse. Continue your way to Istanbul and drive through the European lands of Turkey. Cross the Dardanelles Strait by ferryboat and visit the Anzac Bay and World War I memorials. Fighting on opposite sides at Gallipoli were two future great leaders, Winston Churchill and Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk, the Father of Modern Turkey). During nine months of battles more than 100,000 men were killed and half a million were wounded. Arrive to Istanbul and enjoy a farewell dinner while socializing with your fellow travelers and sharing the memories of all the fabulous treasures you’ve seen during your visit. Overnight at the WYNDHAM ISTANBUL PETEK. (B,D)

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TURKEY Participants  Participants should be able to walk at an easy pace over uneven terrain at sites of ancient ruins for three or four hours at a time, depending on time of year, in heat and humidity. Going up and down often uneven steps, walking over stone structures and walkways, climbing up stone pathways to view various monuments, and walking down narrow passageways sometimes in a bent position, are all to be expected.  You should be in good physical health to enjoy this destination to its fullest. General  True adventure in travel can sometimes be accompanied by unexpected changes in conditions, itineraries and occasionally your accommodations. Participants should travel with a spirit of adventure and flexibility. Remember to pack your patience and sense of humor! Be willing to look past self-imposed ideals of Western amenities and do not compare these new experiences with your life back home. Travel often includes visiting destinations with modest infrastructures and a bending definition of comfort. That being said, most locations are nestled in absolute luxury where pampering is the norm.  Participants should generally be in good health and prepared to travel in locations without medical facilities. Air Schedules Choosing the best possible air arrangements for our travelers is always a challenge. We work with many airlines that offer the best level of service, routings and value for our programs. While there may indeed be more direct routings available with another airline, the cost of these flights may not be within the budget that allows us to give you the best value possible. . If you prefer to purchase your own international air, please let us know. This program begins and ends in Istanbul. Upon registration, you must provide your full legal name as it appears on your passport. In the event an airline ticket is issued with incorrect information you have provided, you will be responsible for charges associated with reissuing the ticket.
