Welcome to studies in the Language Centre!

What is the Language Centre? The Language Centre is officially an independent institute under the central administration of the University. Its mission is to arrange teaching for all students in language skills forming part of degree requirements or otherwise necessary, likewise in the relevant cultural knowledge and communicative skills. We welcome international students to join in our courses. In addition to the courses described in this Guide international students can participate in our other courses if there is space for them.

Enrolling for courses Enrolment is required for most of our courses. You can enrol for most of our courses by Internet using the Wilmo service See the Language Centre homepages (www.uta.fi/laitokset/ kielikeskus/opetus). For other courses you generally need to put your name on a list. Unfortunately, if sufficient number of students (min. 10 students) do not enrol for a course it must be cancelled. Whichever way you enrol, your place is only assured if you are present at the first session. Otherwise your place will be given to another student on the waiting list.

Tests Tests are held at the end of the course at a time announced by the teacher. There will be one opportunity for a retake of the test after each test at a time announced by the teacher on the course. Generally you do not need to enrol separately for these tests. If there are any exceptional arrangements the teacher will announce this.

Grading Grades will be given for most courses. In some cases, only a grade of “Pass” or “Hyväksytty” will be granted upon completion of the course requirements. The grading scale is as follows: Course Grades 3 32.5 2+ 2 21.5 1+ 1 1-

Credits One Finnish credit is worth 40 hours of work, including class time, reading and assignments. The number of hours of classtime may differ from course to course; however, it is generally 25 hours per credit.

THE SELF-ACCESS CENTRE AT THE LANGUAGE CENTRE The facilities provided by the Self-Access Centre allow you to learn languages at your own pace and in the way that suits you best. The Self-Access Centre is situated in room E 220 in the Language Centre.

The Self-Access Centre offers a varied selection of language learning possibilities. For example, the satellite TV and internet facilities allow you both to hear and see the language being used in real contexts. The latest news reports provide up-to-the-minute views on culture and society. It is also worth getting acquainted with the language learning programs on cd-rom which the SelfAccess Centre stocks. By permitting you to correct your mistakes and to get feedback on your progress, they make interactive learning possible. Many internet sites also offer the same possibilities, especially in the areas of grammar and vocabulary activities and tests. The Self-Access Centre also provides more traditional modes of studying, such as through self-study books and cassettes. Although self-study requires motivation and focus, it does not have to be a lonely pursuit. Learning a language through self-study is often more fun and efficient if done with a partner or partners. In addition, teacher tutors of different languages are on hand to suggest material and ways how best to improve your language skills.

The Self-Access Centre currently offers material in 18 languages: Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

However, please bear in mind that the range of material may be less wide in some of the less popular languages. Nevertheless new additions to our stock of material are regularly being made and we do our best to take into account the wishes of our users. General guidelines for use of the Self-Access Centre (SAC): · · ·

The SAC is for the use of registered Tampere University students and staff. Users should sign in and out at the supervisor’s desk located by the entrance. Material in the SAC may not be borrowed for home use, apart from specified course cassettes. These may be borrowed overnight or over the weekend and must be signed out and back in on the list provided at the supervisor’s desk. No copying of SAC material (textbooks, audio-cassettes, language software) can be done for users. No prior reservation is required for using the SAC. However, to guarantee a place, users may reserve a computer, tv/vcr or listening place for one hour maximum at a time (this time may be extended if the user wishes to watch a film or tv programme lasting more than 1 hour). Users may also reserve the space at the back of the SAC for group work activities. Reservations should be made a day in advance through the supervisor, either in person or by email or phone. Reservations become invalid if the reserving user has not shown up 5 mins after the start of the reserved period.

The Council of Europe Common Reference Levels (global scale) Proficient User C2 Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously and very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

C1 Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Independent User B2 Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

B1 Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, leisure etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Basic User A2 Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

A1 Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

LANGUAGE COURSES Arabic Elementary Language Course Arabian kielen alkeiskurssi 8 ECTS credits (4 Finnish credits) Level A1 (Common European Framework scale) No previous studies in Arabic are required. OBJECTIVE: The course is designed to give a basic knowledge of standard Arabic language and daily communicative skills. A brief introduction to Arab culture will also be conducted throughout the course. The students will slowly get acquainted with the Arabs’ way of living and will gradually learn how to manage in everyday conversation. CONTENTS: Pronunciation, character writing, basic grammar and conversation. This is an integrated course where the students will be working on written and oral exercises. Duration of the course: 100 hours in two terms: 50 hours in the autumn term and 50 hours in the spring term. The course starts in the autumn term only. Course material: 1. Mahdi Alosh. Chinese Elementary Language Course I Kiinan kielen alkeiskurssi I 4 ECTS credits (2 Finnish credits) Level A1 (Common European Framework scale) No previous studies in Chinese are required. Language of instruction is English. OBJECTIVE: To introduce some basic knowledge of Chinese language and culture. Students can orally handle short social exchanges, greetings, apologies, farewells, introductions, nationalities and responses to brief language functions. Students can read with the help of pinyin and recognize the meaning of some characters. Students can write the simpliest characters starting from one stroke to about six. Contents: Basic pronunciation, grammar and conversations for daily communication. Duration of the course: 50 hrs in the autumn term . Course material: Materials designed by the teacher. OBJECTIVE: Further improve students’ ability of speaking and writing skills. Learn to write and recognize more characters without pinyin. Students can express their simple meaning with memorised phrases, group of words and short sentences. Students can read texts fluently with the help of pinyin. Students are able to write some simple characters by dictating. Contents: Different kinds of conversations, Chinese idioms, short stories and various language skill exercises. Duration of the course: 50 hrs in spring term. Course material: Materials designed by the teacher and available in the class. ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSES English Writing and Oral Skills for International Students 4 ECTS credits(2 Finnish credits) Level A2-B1 (Common European Framework scale) OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this course is to help foreign students on exchange at Tampere University to improve their spoken and written skills in English. Through group work, both in and out of class, student will work on their spoken fluency, grammatical accuracy and vocabulary, as well as building confidence in communicating with others in English. There will also be a self study component where the students will be responsible for working on individual problem areas in grammar and pronunciation. In-class group work will consist of discussions and exercises that will develop students’ ability for both spontaneous and planned speech. Sessions in the language studio are organised to practice those pronunciation and language problems which emerge during the course. Discussion and presentation techniques will be reviewed and practised in this context. Out-of-class group work will consist of discussions and exercises on topics of the students’ own choosing. The appropriateness of the topics will be determined in cooperation with the teacher. The group will also be responsible for preparing and giving a presentation to be done in class. Again, the topic will be determined according to the needs and interests of the members of the group. Self-study: Each student will do a diagnostic test to assess their current level of proficiency. Then an individual learning plan will be made that addresses particular problems in grammar and/or pronunciation according to the results of the diagnostic test. Students will be required to schedule their own practice in the Self Access Centre at a time that suits them. Mode: 80 hours which is divided up between in-class and out-of-class contact hours and self study. Advanced Seminar Skills and Academic Writing in English 4 ECTS credits (2 Finnish credits) Level B2 (Common European Framework scale) Intended for students of all faculties who need to learn how to write academic textx and participate in seminars in English. PREREQUISITE: Minimum level B2 OBJECTIVES: To make the students aware of the conventions involved in producing good academic writing and in effective seminar participation To enable them to produce coherent academic texts of their own and to defend and oppose statements of opinion using logically constructed argumentation. Preparation for academic writing and seminars in the students’ own fields of study. English Communicative (Oral) Skills Englannin kielen kommunikatiivinen(suullinen) taito 4 ECTS credits (2 Finnish credits) Level B2 (Common European Framework scale)

For students in the Faculties of Information Studies and Social Sciences PREREQUISITE: Minimum level B2. OBJECTIVE: The English Communicative Skills courses emphasize academic level speaking and listening skills. Some degree of reading and writing will also be required. CONTENTS: The course attempts to integrate the above skills into a thematic course module. The overall aim is to develop learners’ communicative ability through facilitating interaction on contemporary issues within the academic environment. The course consists of 80 hours divided between contact teaching and self-study. Attendance is compulsory. Deutsch für Wirtschaftskommunikation – Textverstehen und Schreiben Saksan kaupallinen viestintä - tekstin ymmärtäminen ja kirjoittaminen 4 ECTS (2 Finnische Studienwochen) Level B2 (Common European Framework scale) Ziele und Inhalt: Auf dem Kurs sollen die Teilnehmer gute Kommunikationsfähigkeit in schriftlichem Geschäftsdeutsch einüben. Das globale Hauptziel ist Befähigung der Studenten/ innen zur aktiven Verstehens- und Gebrauchsfertigkeit im Umgang mit wirtschaftlichkaufmännischen Texten. Ein weiteres Zweitziel ist die Entwicklung der Schreibfertigkeit anhand der wirtschaftlichen Texte. Die direkten Internet-Kontakte zu deutschsprachigen Unternehmen und Institutionen (http://www.uta.fi/~kksipe) dienen im Unterricht der Verwirklichung dieser Ziele. In diesem Zusammenhang sollen die Bidirektionalität, d.h. die Wechselseitigkeit der kaufmännischen Kommunikation sowie das Beherrschen der Sprach- und Kulturkenntnisse des Geschäftspartners hervorgehoben werden. Der Kurs ist der Grundstudiengang im internationalen deutschsprachigen Handel. Die Aufgaben umfassen sprachliche Analyse der Textkommunikation und Produzieren der Botschaften sowie Argumentation und Interpretation. Darüber hinaus sollen Übungen zur Abfassung und 38

Referierung der Texte sowie ferner Aufgaben zur unterschiedlichen Terminologie und Sprachrichtigkeit aufgrund von authentischen Texten aus den deutschsprachigen Ländern gemacht werden. Zielgruppe: Der Kurs ist für Studenten der Wirtschaftwissenschaften und für andere an Kaufmännischem Deutsch Interessierte geplant. Vorausgesetzte Deutschkenntnisse für die Teilnahme: Der Studiengang empfiehlt sich besonders gut für Absolventen des mittellangen Deutschkurses auf der Grundschule und auf dem Gymnasium (4-5 Jahre) und für Absolventen des wenigstens kurzen Deutschkurses auf dem Gymnasium und für diejenigen mit entsprechenden Deutschkenntnissen. Kursinhalt: Den Studierenden aus deutschsprachigen Ländern bietet dieses Programm nicht nur die Möglichkeit, selbst etwas Finnisch zu lernen, vor allen Dingen aber mehr über Finnland und die Finnen zu erfahren. Die Beteiligten an diesem Programm organisieren die Treffen selbst und bestimmen, worüber sie miteinander sprechen möchten. Dauer: 1 Semester, ingesamt pro Woche 1 Doppelstunde, insgesamt 24 Stunden. Zu Beginn des Programms gibt es ein einführendes Treffen und im Verlauf 1-2 Treffen der Tutoren. Als Abschluss wird ein gemeinsames Fest durchgeführt.
