We mean Academic Research And how do we do the research?

4

Using Computer Resources at UNYP There are many different possibilities… - go to a library close to home - buy the books yourself - look on the internet… …but where??? 5

Using Computer Resources at UNYP These approaches to research have many problems…

the number of documents reliability/appropriateness of the sources the time it takes the cost…

6

Internet Resources Of course you might start with…

Academic Internet Resources at UNYP The Proquest Database is a solution… You need to use a computer connected to the UNYP network.

www.proquest.com Click on ‘For Researchers - Student & General Researcher’ then ‘Log-in’ and begin your search. No password is required. 8

Writing an Academic Paper For most papers at university, students are expected to use proper academic style (either APA or MLA), and be aware of academic integrity issues. The writing assistance web pages of many Anglo-American universities can be very useful, for example: Empire State College Writing Centre: http://www.esc.edu/esconline/across_esc/writingresourcecenter.nsf Purdue University Online Writing Lab: http://owl.english.purdue.edu University of Toronto Writing Centre: http://www.writing.utoronto.ca or visit: APA Manuals: http://www.apastyle.org/manual/index.aspx APA Tutorial: http://www.apastyle.org/learn/tutorials/basics-tutorial.aspx MLA Citation Style: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ MLA Handbook: http://www.durhamcollege.ca/wp-content/uploads/MLA.pdf

Business Administration Department THE HONOR CODE Yes, we have an Honor code And you have signed it! What is plagiarism? What is cheating?

Business Administration Department What is plagiarism? Representing someone else’s work as your own. For example, cutting and pasting from internet sources. That may have worked in high school, but it does not work at University. Learn how to properly write in an academic style.

What is cheating? Copying from a student, sharing work during an exam or on a paper, talking during an exam, using electronic devices (unless specifically authorized), using cheat notes, using cheat notes written on parts of your body, etc., etc., etc. We have seen it all. Remember that your instructor was once a student.

15

Business Administration Department Penalties for HONOR CODE violations: First Offense: You fail the test or assignment. A numerical grade of between 0 and 59% is assigned. This is up to the instructor’s judgement. Second Offense: You fail the course. No matter how high the rest of your grades are in the course. Third Offense: We may wish you good luck in your new University.
