CONTEXT The purpose of the Planning and Business Intelligence department is to ensure that the university’s strategic and operational planning, monitoring and reviewing processes are underpinned by robust, meaningful and timely management information so that these remain aligned to its mission, values and success. The department provides a broad range of services to support the achievement of the University’s objectives, including value-adding business intelligence to support decision-making across the University, strategic and operational planning, timetabling and business continuity and risk management

JOB PURPOSE To support the Director of Planning in taking the lead role in the production of business intelligence to inform the University’s strategic decision making processes This is a key role responsible for the provision and development of strategic management information and business intelligence to colleagues and senior managers across the University. The role will involve providing specialist advice and expertise in relation to the use and interpretation of management and business intelligence, and taking the lead role in the development of the University’s data warehouse and dashboard developments. The work of the planning and business intelligence team is subject to rapid change in response to external policy changes and internal needs, and the responsibilities of the post will be varied and challenging.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Team Management and Leadership Responsible for the day to day management of the Business Intelligence team. Providing leadership including motivating and developing staff within the team, whilst promoting a “can do” culture in order that the team contributes to the planning processes of the institution providing significant added value. Providing leadership for a team of technical developers ensuring that the team is able to provide the tools and reporting mechanisms to enable staff across the University to access and use the data they require into order to enhance the student experience. .

Taking a lead role in ensuring that the Planning and Business Intelligence team develops into a centre of excellence in data analysis and undertaking bespoke analytical work for institutionally-important questions. Strategic Reporting To ensure that the university’s strategic and operational planning, monitoring and review processes are underpinned by robust, meaningful and timely management information and business intelligence so that these remain aligned to its mission, success criteria and value. This will involve the continuous development of the management information and business intelligence service to support the planning framework and process and decision making at corporate and local level, including:  taking a lead role in developing the provision of sophisticated and strategic management information through the data warehouse and dashboard developments  ensuring that the management information needs of the University are fully understood and that there is a clear strategy and delivery plan in place.  the presentation of key management and performance information for the University’s Senior Management team and committees.  producing analyses of a range of data both internal and external to inform future priorities and response to external forces  managing the analysis of relevant surveys and benchmarking relative to performance data to help inform and shape strategic developments across the University. Competitor Analysis Working alongside the Planning Manager you will have responsibility for the production of information relating to the HE market and the University’s competitors. This will involve producing meaningful competitor analyses including scanning and analysis of external data from a variety of sources (including UCAS, HESA, HEFCE, HEIDI) and development of benchmarking data against appropriate comparators. Survey Analysis To take a lead role with regard to the analysis and interpretation of student surveys within the institution; including external surveys such as the NSS and any internal student surveys. Provision of Training and Development

The role will involve taking a lead in helping build the skills of people across the University in the use and application of data and analysis including providing training session and presentations to a wide range of colleagues across the institution including senior management. Promotion of cross departmental working relationships To promote and effectively embed good working relationships of the Planning and Business Intelligence function with other divisions within the University, enabling mutual understanding and support.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Scope and dimensions of the role Reporting directly to the Director of Planning, the post holder will be required to interpret and communicate often complex information effectively and succinctly to colleagues within the University. Whilst the ability to work proactively and independently will be essential, the postholder will also be expected to motivate their team to deliver when under pressure and within demanding timescales. The nature of the post will require a commitment to evening and weekend working as required meeting challenging internal and external deadlines.
