CONTEXT The purpose of the Planning and Business Intelligence department is to ensure that the university’s strategic and operational planning, monitoring and reviewing processes are underpinned by robust, meaningful and timely management information so that these remain aligned to its mission, values and success. The department provides a broad range of services to support the achievement of the University’s objectives, including value-adding business intelligence to support decision-making across the University, strategic and operational planning, timetabling and business continuity and risk management.

JOB PURPOSE The Business Intelligence Developer reports to the Business Intelligence Manager and will play a key role in managing and developing the services provided by the Business Intelligence Team. The role demands a high level of technical understanding and ability, as well as project management and communication skills. The role will require taking lead responsibility for the management of new reporting projects including liaising with senior management team and senior colleagues, subject matter experts and other colleagues around the University from design to implementation and ongoing support and maintenance of management information reporting, dashboards and queries. The role must ensure the quality, integrity and security of the management information and associated data. They will be responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, standards and codes of practice relating to the data. The role will be responsible for development of complex reports and reporting architecture, developing University-wide data definitions and terminology, and identifying and solving highly complex data quality issues. The post holder will also take a crucial role in managing the University’s data warehouse, ensuring its continual running integrity and up-time. The role will act as a technical lead and expert in management information and reporting best practise coaching other colleagues, offering expert advice and guidance. The post holder will take a lead responsibility the management of new reporting projects, including planning and coordinating the resources needed and monitoring those projects to ensure success.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Development of management information and reporting Work with the Business Intelligence Manager, the Director of Planning, and other senior colleagues to understand the management information requirements of the University. Work with key stakeholders within the University to understand and document the sources of data and map information requirements against available data sources. To be a technical expert for SQL Server ETL development and reporting development to identify opportunities to enhance the current management information and reporting provision. Design and develop changes and additions to the data warehouse databases to map to information requirements. Work with system providers and ICT information services to design and develop extract routines from source systems. Work with ICT information services to design and develop transformation and load routines of data to the data warehouse. Design and develop reports, dashboards, graphs, SharePoint interfaces and queries from the data warehouse to meet the management information requirements of all stakeholders Ensure all developments are tested and meet all functional, technical, quality, security and performance requirements. Liaise with ICT to ensure that the security and safety of all data and information is maintained in line with University information and security policy. Design and implement data quality and consistency schemes to assure the accuracy and integrity of management information and reporting. Where source systems are being replaced, ensure a seamless transition of management information and other relevant reporting. Provide support and assistance to users of management information and reporting. Provide second line support in the identification and resolution of issues related to management information and reporting. To develop tools and support colleagues in the provision of ad-hoc management information and reporting queries. Manage the University’s data warehouse, ensuring its continual running integrity and up-time. To contribute to post implementation maintenance, support and service management. To maintain a strategic awareness of international and national trends in business intelligence and data warehouse technology in order to inform the University’s Business Intelligence provision. To gather, manipulate and perform analysis on data from multiple University systems and other wider resources to solve technical issues and/or to provide key intelligence. To assure the overall quality of the technical delivery, and contribute expertise to the Business Intelligence Page 2 of 6

(BI) projects technical provision.

Planning and activity management Take overall responsibility for the delivery solutions to meet the requirements for management information. Plan and co-ordinate activity, providing reports of progress against planned projects to the Director of Planning and Business Intelligence and other stakeholders. Take corrective action to respond when activity is not progressing to plan and escalate as appropriate identifying creative solutions where guidance may not be available.

Compliance and best practice Be a technical expert and provide coaching to other colleagues. Develop frameworks and tools to make the development of management information and reporting simpler and more efficient. Ensure that all data warehouse database, ETL routines and reporting, dashboard and enquiry routines are designed and developed within the guidelines and principles of the University’s Enterprise Architecture model and technical requirements specifications. Maintain awareness of and provide insight and guidance on suppliers, market trends, statutory bodies, regulation and codes of practice, other organisations and institutions within and out with the HE sector, user and interest groups on areas of development within business intelligence and reporting. To ensure that the activities of the Business Intelligence Team are delivered in the most effective and resource-efficient way possible. To provide advice and recommendations to senior colleagues in order to influence decisions. To ensure that the data warehouse architecture and delivery is compatible and consistent with the University’s existing IT deployments and strategic technical infrastructure vision.

Liaison and networking To attend appropriate external groups and to be a knowledge participant. To attend internal working groups and to provide advice and guidance as appropriate Deliver training across University to a variety of stakeholders and users on the usage and interpretation of the dashboards and other management information reporting.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Scope and dimensions of the role Reporting to the Business Intelligence Manager the post holder will assist in the development and maintenance of the University’s Business Intelligence platforms. Whilst the ability to work proactively and independently will be essential, the postholder will also be expected to work with the team and with colleagues from around the University to consistently deliver when under pressure and within demanding timescales in particular when co-ordinating longer term projects. The post holder will contribute to internal working groups and will provide expert advice to those making longer term decisions.
