University of Dayton Housing Policy: Intensive English Program
IEP only These students are defined as a student admitted to the Intensive English Program only (ie, they are not conditionally admitted to an academic program at the University). Students admitted to the IEP only may choose to live on or off campus. On campus IEP only students are encouraged to live on campus in order to facilitate language learning and culture adjustment. However, students are not required to live on campus if they are here for the IEP only. Students choosing to live on campus will be placed in housing appropriate to their peer group. Students who are 17, 18 and 19 will be placed in first‐year housing. Students who are 19 and 20 will be placed in sophomore housing. Beginning with each fall term following at least one completed winter IEP term, these students will progress to the next year of housing as they would if they were enrolled in the university and part of that class. Students ages 21 to 26 may live in a University apartment or house. Plumwood Apartments will be reserved for students age 24‐30 and based on maturity level of the student. A complete list of University housing costs can be found at http://housing.udayton.edu/common/pricing.html. IEP only students interested in living on campus must complete the online housing form at http://iep.udayton.edu/apply/housingform.asp. Students must request on campus housing at least two weeks prior to arriving on campus. Off‐Campus Housing The International Student and Scholar Services office can provide students with a list of appropriate housing options off campus. The list is also available online at http://international.udayton.edu/iss/dayton/housing_apt.htm. Questions about living off campus should be directed to Jane Hart, International Student and Scholar Services Coordinator, at
[email protected] or (937) 229‐2748. Apartments off campus typically cost between $400 and $900 per month plus the cost of utilities (gas, electricity, water). Students living off campus are responsible for their own transportation to and from the University. The fee for a parking permit for the 2008‐09 (August‐to‐August) academic year is $155.
Host families After a student has demonstrated responsible behavior while living on campus for a minimum of one academic semester or two IEP terms he/she may apply for a host family. A student who has lived off campus without having lived on campus is not permitted to apply for a host family until after they have spent a minimum of one academic term on campus. See the Host Family Policy for more information. Early arrival times for students living on campus Fall 1 IEP term (fall semester): A student can arrive up to one week before University academic classes begin. Students will not be provided housing by the University (including guest houses) before this time. Winter 1 IEP term (winter semester): Students can arrive 24 hours before University academic classes begin if they are living in a residence hall. Students arriving for IEP orientation when IEP orientation occurs prior to University classes beginning may be provided with temporary University housing, but housing is subject to availability. Students living in an apartment or house (not staffed by employees) can move in 24 hours before IEP orientation. Fall 2 and winter 2 IEP terms: Students can move in up to ten days before IEP orientation. Students will not be provided housing by the University (including guest houses) before this time. Summer 1 and summer intersession IEP terms: Students can move in up to three days before IEP orientation. Students will not be provided housing by the University (including guest houses) before this time. All scenarios above require that an EARLY ARRIVAL/EXTENDED STAY form be completed by a CIP staff member (http://housing.udayton.edu/php/eaex/facstaff_application.php). Extended stay The University of Dayton recognizes that some international students will need to remain on campus between semesters as they will not travel or return to their home country. During these periods of time, between the University’s academic semesters, students will need to apply for extended stay which means that an EARLY ARRIVAL/EXTENDED STAY form will need to be completed by a CIP staff member (http://housing.udayton.edu/php/eaex/facstaff_application.php). Whether or not the student can remain in their housing for extended stay will depend on where they live. If the student’s housing is not available, alternative housing will be arranged, provided it is available. *NOTE: Students are not guaranteed continuous housing in the same location from semester to semester (except for the fall and winter semester transition). Housing contracts All students living in University of Dayton housing are required to complete a housing contract. This contract applies for one academic year (August‐May; see the academic calendar for dates). A separate housing contract is completed for each summer housing assignment. For students arriving in the winter semester, the contract applies through the
end of the winter semester. Students will be released from their housing contract for the second term of an academic year contract only if they are 1) leaving the University or 2) moving in with a host family. The University of Dayton housing contract can be completed online at http://housing.udayton.edu/php/contracts/index.php. *IEP students and conditionally admitted students living on campus can complete a paper version of the Housing Contract during their IEP orientation program.
