1.-Materials and its classification Each material has special properties that make it  suitable for  a particular instrument, tool and so  on.  Therefore, when we make an object we have to select the appropriate material.  We can classify materials into two main groups :  ● Natural materials or raw materials:  We get them directly from the environment.  ● Synthetic materials:  We get them through an  manmade process . It means synthetic ones  are obtained from natural materials through chemical processes.  We can also classify them  according to  their origin:  1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Wood  Metal  Plastic  Stone material  Ceramics and glass  Textile material ( fabric )

Properties of materials  What properties make materials different from each other? How do these properties determine  its applications?  ✔ Would you use paper to make a car? The answer is probably not, because paper is not  resistant enough to support strong forces.     ✔  The main properties of materials are:   ▪   Density:  It is the relationship between  mass and volume. Comparing materials with the same  volume, the more mass the more density.  3  ρ = Vm    Kg/m

 ▪  Electrical properties:  Some materials transmit electrical currents. They are called electrical  conductors . The materials that don't transmit electricity are called electrical  insulators.  Metals are examples of good electrical conductors. Plastic, glass, wood and paper are  examples of electrical insulators.

Unit 3:  Wood and its derivatives (A. Aparisi, l. Navalón IES Sedaví)                                 1

▪  Thermal properties:   Good electrical conductors, like metals, are also good thermal conductors,  allowing heat to pass through them. For this reason metals are used to make heat radiators,  cooking pans, etc. Plastic is used to make handles that protect us from heat.  •  Acoustic conductivity:  The ability to  transmit sound. Conductor or insulator  ▪   Optical properties:  Glass is transparent, allowing light to pass through. Some plastics are  translucent, allowing light to pass, but changing its color. Metal is opaque.  ▪   Waterproof:  This is the   resistance to penetration by water and wetting  •  Elasticity / plasticity:  Elastic materials can be deformed, but they recover its original form when  released, like a rubber band. Plastic materials can also be deformed, but they don't recover its  shape when released, remaining permanently deformed, like plasticine.  •  Hardness / softness:  Hard materials are difficult to scratch, like glass. Soft materials are easy to  scratch, like wood.  •  Toughness / brittleness  : Tough materials are difficult to break, like metals. Brittle materials are  easy to break, like glass.  •  Renewable , like all vegetable materials.  •  Recyclable , like glass  •  Biodegradable : like wood  2.-Wood properties and constitution Wood is a raw material formed by cellulose and lignin:  ● Cellulose: Is a natural fiber found in trees. It acts  as tree’s skeleton.  ● Lignin: It makes wood harder and more rigid. It’s like glue that holds the cellulose  together.

Unit 3:  Wood and its derivatives (A. Aparisi, l. Navalón IES Sedaví)                                 2

Wood as technological material:  Wood is a tech material used the most in carpentry to make furniture. This is a very useful  material because:  ◦  It's ecological (renewable, recyclable, biodegradable and non toxic).  ◦  It's easy to work with due to its softness, using the appropriate tools.  ◦  It’s a good electrical and thermal insulator but it is an acoustic conductor.  ◦  It’s not waterproof and needs protection.  ◦  It has medium density depending  on its hardness but it is resistant and tough.  3.-Wood classification  Depending on the tree it is obtained, wood can be classified in two main  types: hardwood and softwood    Softwood  comes from  evergreen trees  (those with needle‐shaped leaves): The wood has clear  colour and is easy to work with. Softwood is used to make inexpensive objects.    Pine (pino)

Hardwood  comes from  decidious trees  (those which lose their leaves in the fall): The wood is  dark in colour and difficult to work with. They produce compact and resistant wood, which is very  much appreciated in furniture, flooring and musical instruments. Some examples are:  .  1.‐ Beech (Haya)

2. Oak (Roble)

3.‐ Mahogany(Caoba)
