Swiss hospitality on its highest level

Jan E. Brucker Chairman Swiss Deluxe Hotels

Switzerland enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide as a country with a great tradition of hospitality. The luxury hotel trade has its roots in Switzerland in the 19th century, when the world’s elite started sending their children to be educated at local boarding schools. Young people from all over the world came to meet new cultures and expand their horizons at renowned institutions like “Le Rosey”, the “Institut Montana” or “Institut auf dem Rosenberg” which are located in the most beautiful locations between Geneva and St.Gallen. Many of the 41 Swiss Deluxe Hotels have a close relationship with these internationally recognised educational facilities, which profit from the same exclusive clientele as our establishment does.

In 1882, the Gotthard railway tunnel was opened, a monumental construction of the century that brought the South and North of Europe closer together. Swiss innovation and engineering ingenuity inspired both trade as well as tourism in Europe. Just five years later, in 1887, the opulent Hotel Splendide Royal opened in Lugano, which profited from the new travel route and Englishman Thomas Cook’s “Grand Tour”. The jewel of Lake Lugano is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year - over the course of all those years it has been managed by a total of five directors!

The Beau-Rivage Hotel in Neuchâtel is also an exciting chapter in Swiss history. It has dedicated one of its beautiful suites to entrepreneur and pioneer Alfred Borel, who immigrated to California in the 19th century leaving his Swiss traces there.

The world’s elite love sending their children to local boarding schools in Switzerland. The schools have an excellent reputation as well as century-old tradition - just like Switzerland’s luxury hotel trade. Many of the 41 Swiss Deluxe Hotels have a close relationship with these recognised educational facilities, which profit from the same exclusive clientele as our establishments.

It’s like walking into a land of sugar icing. The pink garden fence is reminiscent of sprinkles on a birthday cake. Pink sprinkles on white snow. The snow is glistening even whiter than usual on Rosenberg in St. Gallen. “Pink was my father’s idea”, laughs Bernhard Gademann, School Principal and owner of Institute Rosenberg. He is the third generation directing the exclusive boarding school. Gademann pushes on the door handle and we enter the main building: we are met by marble, brass and porcelain. Well-combed students wearing fur meet us on the steps to the Principal’s office. Elegant clothing is mandatory here.

Discretion is an important part of our product The famous names of students remain unspoken. “Discretion is an important part of our product”, says Gademann, sitting in a white leather armchair. His great-grandfather’s portrait looks down sternly from the wall. “Firstly, because of safety. Secondly, because we want to treat all students equally here.” He adds, saying: “People are appreciated here because of their personalities, not because of their names.” The Institut Rosenberg has existed since 1889, making it part of the first wave of boarding schools that were established in Switzerland. “International boarding schools are a parallel phenomenon to tourism and the hotel trade”, says pedagogue Peter Metz, who performs research on the Swiss boarding school scene. At the end of the 19th century, winter sports and alpinism emerged. And so did boarding schools. Within a short period of time dozens of international schools opened in Switzerland, most of which still exist today. Over the decades entire generations of the world’s elite have been educated here: Spanish King Juan Carlos, Prince Rainier of Monaco, King Albert II. from Belgium and former US Secretary of State John Kerry are just a few names on a long list. Many Swiss boarding schools are situated in the mountains, and the slopes are not very far off. Most of them however, are located in Romandy. “The lakes, cities and proximity to the Alps makes western Switzerland an incredibly attractive location”, says Metz. However, one important factor was also the language: “French was an internationally recognised language that could be combined with English”. Even today, the French-speaking boarding schools are popular because of bilingualism.

Institut Montana Zugerberg was founded in 1926, in the former Schönfels spa hotel.

The international blend broadens students‘ cultural horizons One aspect that unites the Swiss boarding schools is internationality. „At English schools children get to know English students and learn to play cricket“, says Bernhard Gademann at Rosenberg. The state deliberately promotes these elite boarding schools to bind foreign students to Great Britain. There is a suspicion that this support stems from political motivations. „In Switzerland on the other hand, the students not only learn Swiss German, they also move within an international environment“, he says. Many Swiss boarding schools also have quotas for nationalities. Some institutes, like the elite boarding school Le Rosey in Romandy, ensure firm implementation of 10-percent quotas. Other institutions, like Institut Rosenberg are more lenient. „We deliberately have no quotas because we want to approach each child individually“, says Gademann, who went to school at Rosenberg himself. Rosenberg has 20 percent Russian students, 15 percent Chinese students and the rest is homogeneous. „It is more important to us whether the child belongs here than where they come from“. Individual support and education are part of the basic concepts at Rosenberg. Quality also has a price. Local institutes charge two to three times more than their competition in England and the USA, making them the most expensive schools in the world. One year at a Swiss boarding school costs between 50,000 and 110,000 francs per year. Even today, in times of a weakening world economy, the Swiss boarding schools are hardly experiencing any problems. This field is more or less resistant to

crisis - after all, most local boarding schools also withstood the second world war. One of the reasons for this is the Swiss label: Safety, stability, neutrality and reliability are qualities that can hardly be found anywhere else. The Swiss also profit from its tradition as a country of education. Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Piaget: They were all active in Switzerland. The international Baccalaureate/IB, which provides entry to universities in many countries, was also devised in Switzerland. The size of Swiss boarding schools is also key: While 2,000 to 3,000 students attend Anglo-American schools, local Swiss schools are attended by 200 to 300 students. The size makes these schools attractive, but also less dependent on new students. More communication instead of drills Security, a high level of education, commitment: These are the characteristics that make the Swiss locations unique. Swiss boarding schools are resistant to crises precisely because of their internationality: when one market collapses another grows. Asia, Central America and India are booming markets. Requests from China are increasing immensely as usual. “Many Chinese people have had enough of the drills in Chinese schools”, says Christophe Gudin, Rector at the Le Rosey boarding school. “They come to us seeking a holistic approach”. When Chinese students come to Switzerland, they are immersed in a completely foreign schooling environment. The students must be able to respond to this: “In the beginning, we don’t call the Chinese students up to the black board because they would feel compromised”, says Bernhard Gademann from Rosenberg. Even asking a child their opinion is difficult at the beginning: “In China, there is always a correct an15

«Einfachheit, down to earth», präzisiert er.

swer. If a child answers incorrectly there, it is common for students to be laughed at by teachers.” From the Chinese drill to the Swiss education system: Patton took this path. He is 18 years old and is going to school at Institut Montana in Zugerberg. Mount Pilatus rises majestically above the grey cloud cover and the tree branches look like they are covered in icing sugar. This Chinese student comes from Tianjin and has been at the boarding school in Switzerland for two years. “In China, all we did was cram at school”, he says. “When I came here, I suddenly had to focus on very different things”. He laughs as he reminisces: “Suddenly there were social interactions, sports and communication, which I first learned to love here.” At first, his English was not very good and his understanding of other cultures was virtually non-existent. “There was a student from Iran, Iceland and Mongolia in my class”, he tells us, his eyes twinkling behind his glasses. “This makes conversations much more interesting because everyone brings their own point of view”. And then there is the view that he doesn’t want to miss: “I mean, look at the sky: it’s blue”, he says. Then he laughs and shakes his head: “In Peking its more like: ‘Where is the sky?’” Nature, mountains, fresh air: Even today, these factors play a role in selecting a boarding school. When selecting the Institut Montana, Swiss virtues are important, says Gerhard Pfister. The politician is on the Institut Montana’s Board of Directors and is the former President of the Association of Swiss Private Schools.

“Simplicity, being down to earth”, he specifies. Montana is a Swiss school with an international orientation. More Swiss students can be found here than in other boarding schools because the Swiss High School Certification is offered here in addition to the International Baccalaureate (IB). “It is important to us that the school retains a Swiss character”, says Nils Remmel, Rector at Montana. Nearly half of the students speak German. 35 percent of the students are Swiss. Boarding schools and luxury hotels appeal to the same values Institut Montana was founded in 1926, in the former Schönfels spa hotel. The second Felsenegg building was added later - also a former spa hotel. The development of hotel trade and boarding schools cross paths again and again in Switzerland: Historian Metz explains that in Chexbres, Romandy for instance, the “Grand Hôtel de Chexbres” became Institut Préalpine, in 1930. The school closed in 1974 and became a hotel again. “Hotels and boarding schools have a similar infrastructure, such as central kitchens, dining halls and numerous bedrooms”, says Metz. What is perhaps more significant is that they share the same clientele: “Students at boarding schools seek the same things as hotel guests: They are looking for something social, they enjoy sports and cultural programmes”. It is no wonder that boarding schools and hotels have close relationships. Most boarding schools organise summer or winter camps for their students where they become regular guests at

Parental visits are usually arranged together with local luxury hotels. There are also projects with specific collaborations. An example can be found in St. Gallen: Institut Rosenberg offers students an introductory course in Hotel Management. The course takes place at Hotel The Chedi Andermatt. Senior Sales Manager at The Chedi Andermatt, Manuel Bernardo, is himself a former Rosenberg student. The connections between the hotel trade and boarding schools usually pass through former students: Several hoteliers in Gstaad, where elite boarding school Le Rosey hosts its winter campus, attended this very school. The Gstaad Palace also has diverse offers surrounding activities at Le Rosey and the John F. Kennedy School, which has been represented in Saanenland since 1971. There are also similar bonds in Engadin: For instance, Heinz Hunkeler, General Manager of Kulm St. Moritz and Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina is an “Old Boy” from Lyceum Alpinum in Zuoz. “When I became the hotelier 11 years ago, the former school principal was a former teacher of mine”, Hunkeler explains. Since then, the boarding school and hotel have been working closer together: “There is a special offer for alumni and every year we host a graduation gala at the Kulm Hotel followed by a party at Dracula”. The Dracula is a member’s club on the hotel’s premises that was founded in the 70’s by Gunter Sachs - also a former student of the boarding school. The Suvretta House also works closely with Lyceum Zuoz. The concentration of top hotels in Engadin opens various common platforms while offering parents and families of students an attractive base from which to visit their children.

Boarding school students return to the hotels It is no coincidence that the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz is in the vicinity of St. Moritz. Sports - especially skiing, snowboarding and hockey in winter - are a significant part of school life. This boarding school is also a secondary school that external students also attend - like Heinz Hunkeler did back in the day. This is why it is so locally anchored. 60 percent of the students speak German and 43 percent are Swiss. The exchange between Swiss and international students is characteristic: “We, the simple mountain people, come together with very different kinds of people. We show them how to snowboard, and in exchange we get invited to St. Tropez”, Hunkeler explains. When the five wildest years of life have past and the graduation celebration in Dracula has subsided, the students disperse in all directions of the world to attend top universities. But they do not forget Engadin. “The boarding school is very important for customer loyalty in the region”, says Hunkeler. “Alumni return.” They return to the place where they went to school. First and foremost: They return to Switzerland.

„To be a host at one of the most beautiful hotels in Switzerland is a special honour,“ says Andreas Gartmann happily. He has been in charge of the five star establishment and the Albergo Carcani since November 1, 2016. „We have big and small plans and ideas for next summer. As the new hotelier I am excited to bring in a breath of fresh air“, the 47-year old says. A native of Zurich, he was previously at the Astoria Operations AG in Lucerne and the hotelier at Hotel Mont Cervin Palace & Petit Cervin in Zermatt. Carlo Rampazzi‘s art The rooms and suites have been designed by Ticino interior designer Carlo Rampazzi. The fresh colour schemes are captivating and bring everything together harmoniously. The rooms and suites present themselves like individual works of art. The public spaces in Hotel Eden Roc also display the fine and sometimes flamboyant signature of artist and interior designer Rampazzi. In 2010, Hotel Eden Roc expanded its capacity with 16 sporty-elegant rooms in the Eden Roc Marina directly adjacent. It now has a total of 95 rooms and suites at its disposal. „Carlo Rampazzi is simply incredible! With the most recent renovations he has again created true highlights and set completely new standards in interior design“, says Andreas Gartmann. The renovations have just been completed - summer can come. A spa for philosophers and aficionados With fascinating water worlds, a large sauna area and seven individually designed treatment rooms, the Eden Roc Spa offers a special kind of luxury. Indoor and outdoor pools are inviting for a morning swim or a pleasant cool-down session. Carlo Rampazzi chose Ticino‘s dazzling and colourful world of flowers as inspiration for the furnishings. In so doing, the designer followed a holistic aspiration with regard to the architectural and interior design: The wellness area is the harmonious entity in the hotel.

Indulging in the south with 46 GaultMillau points Four unforgettable restaurants offer a gourmet experience in a class of its own. Chef Salvatore Frequente pampers the guests at gourmet restaurant La Brezza (17 GaultMillau points) and at the romantic lake house La Casetta. The native from Sicily selects his products carefully, mindful of quality and origin. By using domestic products, which are presented skilfully on the plates with a love for detail, this master chef succeeds in creating contrasting taste sensations. The Eden Roc kitchen is the realm of Cyrille Kamerzin. The chef pampers guests in the classic restaurant with traditional dishes, interpreted in a refined, contemporary manner. Just in time for summer, Gero Porstein will complete the kitchen team, switching to Lake Maggiore from the “Romanoff ” restaurant in the Carlton Hotel St. Moritz. As a master of two culinary worlds, the seasonal switch from Engadin to Ticino isn’t difficult for him “Authenticity also works in Italian”, says Porstein, who will be presenting light, surprising and exceptionally creative Mediterranean cuisine with a view of the lake, as Chef de Cuisine at Restaurant Marina (14 GaultMillau points) and Albergo Carcani. The Eden Roc has been distinguished many times by the Sunday newspaper as the best vacation hotel in Switzerland, and also received the coveted „Gault&Millau Hotel of the Year“ award in 2010.

St. Tropez-feeling and magic charm „We want to be part of the direct environment as much as possible, which means that we will work closer with local partners and strengthen our regional focus“, says Gartmann. This will be reflected primarily in the restaurant‘s menu and wine list. With a series of youthfully fresh events the Eden Roc team will appeal to even more guests from the region. In addition to the beach events it will also feature the „Safari del Gusto“ (a kitchen party) and various concerts. A sundowner party is also being planned on its own landing stage during the „Jazz Ascona“ festival, where performers can perform unplugged, plus an interactive standing dinner with local winemakers and various artists.

The Eden Roc is a traditional hotel with exceptional flair and a truly magical charm - a bold mix of beach and Ibiza feeling, Swiss down-to-earth sensibility and Mediterranean nonchalance. A place that exudes plenty of positive energy that you can enjoy and have fun with while meeting people from around the world. In the future, Andreas Gartmann is looking forward to focusing more on water sports and the beach feeling, as well as outdoor activities like cycling, biking and hiking. Thanks to its proximity to Milan, the Eden Roc will also offer attractive day trips and special offers for trade fair guests with an „after fair relax“ option.

Dreaming about

the big, wide world

The Alfred Borel suite: Masculine inappearance, unusual in design, surprising, exciting and enigmatic...

It was his residence and business building, the place Alfred Borel returned to after his successful business years in San Francisco. From the beaches of California to the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, so to speak. Today, the grand palace on the Swiss Riviera has become the Beau-Rivage Hotel. The luxury hotel has dedicated a suite to the talented engineer and business man Alfred Borel. Masculine in appearance, unusual in design, surprising, exciting and enigmatic...

“Radical change is the expression of the modern and its innovative spirit.” This quote isn’t from a start-up entrepreneur from Silicon Valley in the 21st century, it is from a man who struck out to San Francisco in 1856, and established a trade business against the background of the gold rush. He conducted business successfully between Europe and the United States, and in 1892 he built the building, which is today’s Beau-Rivage Hotel, for private and commercial purposes. Alfred Borel became a major player in Swiss export and is still considered a symbol for the region’s entrepreneurial quality. In California, Alfred Borel also provided support to notable infrastructure projects, like the San Francisco’s cable cars, the Los Angeles Railway Company or the construction of telegraph lines through the entire federal state, thanks to the lending bank set up by him.

rooms a masculine and modern style. Many details are reminiscent of the pioneers of 19th century technical achievements. Some of the furniture also seems to display elements from the region’s traditionally-rich watch manufacturers. The highlight for people nostalgic about technology is a mechanical music box made by manufacturer Reuge de Sainte-Croix: it dispenses espresso capsules and plays songs like “smoke on the water” by Deep Purple, or “Imagine” by John Lennon. A different song for each flavour. Use the large, chromed binoculars to explore the expanse of Lake Neuchâtel and dream about the big, wide world. The suite has a bedroom with a large canopy bed and a work area. The elegant living room, which is an extension of the dining room, is furnished with large comfortable sofas. The spacious bathroom has all the latest amenities, featuring a large bathtub with touch controls and a Venetian shower with waterfall and tropical rain setting. The bedroom, living and dining rooms are outfitted with LCD screens and a B&W Zeppelin Air speaker system that is compatible with all types of smartphones and tablets. The Alfred Borel Suite does have one thing in common with the 66 other rooms and suites at the Beau-Rivage Hotel. They all offer a magnificent view of the lake, the Alps and the Esplanade du Mont-Blanc, which can be admired through the large windows and from the balconies adorned with cast-iron artistry. 16 GaultMillau points at Restaurant O’terroirs Fresh lake air has been known to make people hungry, and when tracing Alfred Borel we are on the mark at this address as well. Restaurant O’terroirs has recently been awarded with 16 Points GaultMillau and continues in the glorious tradition of legendary Restaurant Beau-Rivage. It opened in 1929 and its reputation for being a top class address extended far across the region. The establishment also has six modern conference rooms, a wine cellar and two refined outdoor terraces with a lounge and restaurant.

Oliver Stone on «Snowden», Switzerland,

ZFF and More

Three-time Oscar winner Oliver Stone, who was awarded a Purple Heart for his combat duty in Vietnam and went on to write/direct some of the greatest antiwar movies ever, has an ongoing relationship with Switzerland, the neutral nation that hasn’t fought a war for 170 years. Stone has attended the Zurich Film Festival at least four times, most recently to present his newest film, Snowden. By Ed Rampell Stone, who turned seventy last September, was born in New York City to an American father and French mother. He grew up in part in Manhattan, where his father worked on Wall Street as a stockbroker, and as a fluent French speaker, he often summered in Paris and Seine-et-Marne. After dropping out of Yale University in 1965 Stone taught English in Saigon then joined the U.S. Army in 1967 to fight in Vietnam, serving at first in the 2nd Platoon of Bravo Company and later the 1st Cavalry. The infantryman was wounded twice during his tour of duty and given the Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster plus a Bronze Star for “extraordinary acts of courage under fire.” The Purple Heart is a high military decoration awarded to servicemen wounded or, posthumously, killed; in lieu of a second Purple Heart the Oak Leaf Cluster is given instead of another medal. In essence, Stone, who was shot in the neck, earned two Purple Hearts, as well as the Bronze Star - but instead of turning him into a jingoist favoring militarism, Stone’s experiences in Indochina transformed him into an antiwar advocate and critic of Washington’s policies, which he went on to express in the cinema. His 1986 masterpiece Platoon, starring Charlie Sheen as what may be Stone’s alter ego, won four Academy Awards, including for Best Picture and Best Director, and was nominated for another four Oscars, including for Stone’s screenplay, which is believed to be based on his own wartime trials and tribulations in ’Nam. In 1989, Stone scored a second Best Director Oscar for Born on the Fourth of July, a biopic about another Vietnam veteran who’d won a Purple Heart and Bronze Star - Ron Kovic, who became a

38

peace activist and was portrayed, largely in a wheelchair, by Tom Cruise, who received his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for his work in this film that garnered six nominations, including for Best Picture. Stone’s dovish sensibility is also expressed in 1986’s Salvador, which opposed President Reagan’s interventionist policies in Central America and the final installment in Stone’s Vietnam trilogy, 1993’s Heaven & Earth, with Tommy Lee Jones. During his contentious career Stone has also turned his critical gaze beyond issues of war and peace. In 1987’s Wall Street and its 2010 sequel, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the writer/ director tackled the excesses of capitalism with its “greed is good” ethos, epitomized by Michael Douglas’ reptilian wheeler-dealer, Gordon Gekko. With its hard-hitting conspiracy theory about President Kennedy’s assassination, 1991’s three hour-plus JFK, starring Kevin Costner, ignited a firestorm of controversy and received six Oscar nominations - including for Best Picture, Best Director and screenwriting - and won two, for editing and cinematography. While Stone is best known for his fiction movies, he is also a superb documentarian whose nonfiction films include 2009’s look at Latin America’s left-leaning presidents, South of the Border. In his colossal The Untold History of the United States, Stone examines America’s underbelly, presenting his counter-narrative alternative to the official version of historical events in a 10-part series aired 2012-2013 on the Showtime cable TV network. Now, in his latest feature Snowden - the biopic about whistleblower Edward Snowden, who exposed the National Security Agency’s top secret snooping - Stone fearlessly challenges the U.S. government’s Orwellian surveillance state. Stone’s 20th feature film was presented in a gala screening at the Zurich Film Festival, where the co-writer/director and Snowden’s co-stars, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, posed for photos and signed autographs on the Green Carpet in front of Zurich’s Corso 1 theater. In this candid conversation, the outspoken Oliver Stone discusses his movie Snowden - which was set in part in Geneva - as well as the real Edward Snowden, his girlfriend Lindsay Mills, WikiLeaks, Russia, Hawaii, Switzerland, the Zurich Film Festival, his favorite Zurich hotel and more.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden during his basic training for the U.S. Army in SNOWDEN.

In the corporate media talking heads try to belittle Edward Snowden as a “low level CIA asset” or “NSA staffer.” Some even deny that he actually worked for the CIA. But your film paints another picture. What was Snowden’s actual role? Stone: We went with the record and what he told us. He was an employee of the CIA and was trained there. He went to Geneva on his first assignment. This is covered in Luke Harding’s book [a major source for the film], a new edition owned by The Guardian. Everything as stated in the film is where he was at that time, in those years. He went from Geneva, he resigned, then he went back to work for Dell [a computer company], and was a contractor with security clearance in Japan. He was with the NSA, where he saw a lot of the cyberwarfare and surveillance activity. He went from there - also with Dell - back to Maryland, where he was involved in selling to the CIA Dell products. He did very well there - he had it very well made, a good situation in life. From there he went to Hawaii after he had an epileptic fit and took on a very important duty in Hawaii, as we show. But he was certainly not low level. He was very bright. He designed a new program called “Epic Shelter.” He was working on another program called “Heartbeat” - very few people know about that. And it was in that capacity that he gained access. What is Snowden’s life like in Moscow? How does he support himself? What does Lindsay Mills do there? Stone: I can’t tell you about his life there in much detail. He stays very active and spends much of his time on a computer. He speaks to many groups. He sometimes speaks to corporations, to universities and other societies interested in reform regarding questions about the internet. He says very intelligent things about what is going on in the present day and the surveillance universe. So his life there is circumscribed; I don’t think he travels around a lot these days. He’s a computer programmer - remember, he always was sedentary, even in his early years with Lindsay. He was more the introvert - she was the extrovert. He avoided photographs and so forth. Very much similar. She’s an interesting case. We certainly treated her - we really looked at this relationship in more depth than the media did. They treated her as bit of a… liability - I would say they treated her negatively. Described her as a sort of a hippie, a pole dancer type. No, she’s much more than that. She became much closer to Ed in that 10year relationship. Nurtured. She was important to him. And she’s joined him again of her volition. He kept her out of the loop - of course, he sacrificed his life to protect her. But he didn’t expect to live another life. Ever since, he’s had a second life that he hadn’t planned on. She joined him there, so I think that’s quite an interesting love story. What do you think of the Democratic National Committee document dump from WikiLeaks and Russia’s purported involvement in that? Snowden criticized WikiLeaks over it and Julian Assange accused Snowden of trying to earn Hillary Clinton’s favor.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden and Shailene Woodley as Lindsay Mills walk in Washington, D.C. in Oliver Stone’s SNOWDEN.

Stone: I’m not going to get into that. I really don’t think the - I’ll say this: The two [U.S. presidential] candidates did not talk about surveillance state or Mr. Snowden. Or, for that matter, about the wars America’s involved in - or, for that matter, about environmental change. This was a strange, superficial election and it seems that the accusations back and forth - the new nature of cyberwarfare, the fact that we don’t know who leaks and does the stealing, because there’s so many proxies, so much protection. It’s a very risky game to start making accusations. People start accusing Russia I don’t think they’re accurate and I don’t think the Russian government would involve itself in the U.S. election like that. It would be ridiculous for them if they were caught. And I think it’s a really dangerous kind of Cold War attitude. So I veer towards the Assange interpretation. And Assange - I’ve met him, he’s certainly no stoolie for anybody, he’s no patriot of anybody’s, he’s very much an independent voice in this world. He’s been outspoken for years and paid a tremendous price. So no, I don’t buy that. I think the DNC is at fault. The four people [in the Democratic National Committee] who were lying were definitely acting illegally. They’re supposed to act neutral in this context and they were definitely against Bernie Sanders. There’s a lot at fault here and they’re not looking at it. They’re looking at kind of hysterical accusations against Russia. Who did you support for president? Stone: Jill Stein [the Green Party candidate]. Compare the challenges of telling Snowden’s story to the challenges of JFK? Stone: They’re similar in that there was a tremendous amount of research that had to be done. We threw out 50% of our research - there was just too much. Already in the film we’re discussing: mass surveillance; drones; cyberwarfare. There was quite a lot, a complex story; very difficult to simplify. We had to dramatize… we condensed so much material. But I think we stayed truthful to the spirit to what happened. Have you ever been surveilled? Stone: I imagine that I’ve crossed somebody’s line somewhere. But I don’t feel that I’m an object of pursuit. I’ve been out there a long time… They kind of know and they can pretty much find out whatever they want. I don’t like the idea, they could - but they would. Hawaii is popularly portrayed as a paradise. But your film shows that Hawaii is not only a tourist paradise, but a surveillance hub involved with drone warfare. Tell us about that amazing underground facility depicted in Snowden? Stone: It’s based on a [Kunia] tunnel that was used in World War Two for airplanes. You could actually fit airplanes into that tunnel; it was never used, but it was built 41

for that purpose… We got the original plans for it from Washington and we were able to digitize a lot of it, put in its size and scope. We used three different locations - one was in Munich, in the Olympic stadium. The other one was in an old post office in Munich going back to the 1930s. We also built a set for some of it. So all the combinations of these things gave it the size and it’s an important base for covert activity, including cyberwarfare, too. Keeping an eye on China. I believe it’s called the Kunia Regional SIGINT Operations Center? Stone: That sounds right. Kunia. Tell us about shooting in Hawaii. What actual locations did you shoot in? How long were you there? Stone: We were there for a week. We shot near the tunnel - we obviously couldn’t get in. We shot near, very near, Snowden’s home there [Waipahu], near a golf course. Very close, similar style house. We had beach scenes, roads. It rained every day! When [Snowden and Mills] are hiking, was that shot at Kualoa Ranch, Kaaawa Valley, where Jurassic Park was shot? Stone: Yeah, I think so.

How was your trip to the 2016 Zurich Film Festival? Stone: The trip was very good, very positive, I had a great time. What did you do at the Zurich Film Festival? Stone: Press conference at the Baur au Lac, then almost nonstop interviews for about two days, along with the gala of Snowden. At the premiere I said a few words onstage with them before the screening. Joe Gordon-Levitt and Shailene [Woodley] were with me at the press conference [and the gala]… They’ve [ZFF] always been very good to me, a very warm reception. In addition to 2016, how many times have you come to the Zurich Film Festival? Stone: I came for Savages [in 2012] and… I got a film achievement award there [in 2007, and he has also taught a “Master Class” at ZFF]. Was Snowden in competition at the Zurich Film Festival? Stone: No.

At Global Blue, we give you the tools and insights needed to look further and attract a whole new world of lucrative foreign customers. We provide the inspiration and support you need to tap into new markets.

How was the Baur au Lac Hotel? Stone: It was fine; very good. Great place… I’ve stayed there many times. It’s a fine hotel, good service, everything works. The food was excellent. Where did you go on this European trip besides Switzerland? Stone: We went to Germany and Spain. There was a [Snowden] premiere in Italy and England… Much more favorable reviews in Europe across the board, in all those countries. We expect to do well at the box office there.

You and Snowden’s co-stars presented the movie at a Zurich Film Festival gala event. In 2012 I covered a press conference with you and John Travolta at the Baur au Lac Hotel, when Savages was screened at the Zurich Film Festival. What do you think of Switzerland, Oliver? Stone: That’s quite an interesting story - I mean, obviously, no country is perfect. But it certainly has an interesting democratic system, with its elections. It seems to have worked for centuries - Switzerland is one of the oldest democracies in the world. On the other hand, of course, there’s a certain amount of exclusiveness and I don’t know all of the issues inside of the government. I like the idea of politicians that don’t clamor for attention - they seem to serve the people. There seems to be a sense of a lack of ego in politics, whereas in the United States they go crazy, the politicians have an outsized presence and personality. So it’s a nice way of working, from the year 1200 or whatever it was, to now, without having too much insanity.

On the other hand, I recognize I certainly agree with its desire for peace, but at times there have been issues with neutrality that can be looked at as turning the other cheek. On the other hand, look at what they’ve done.

Integrated Wellness is based on a comprehensive analysis of the body’s condition. This is done through an interview about one’s current state of well-being and a screening at the beginning of each stay. The guest’s pulse is taken and information like age, height and weight are entered into a system. Hands and feet are connected to metal sensors and the index finger and head are connected with electrodes and sensors. Measurable parameters then clearly display body composition, metabolism, oxygen distribution, heart function, circulatory system and stress levels. The results are listed in a report and evaluated in detail together with the wellness experts. Based on the results and insights about lifestyle, concerns and personal goals, the guest receives a customized, extensive wellness programme with advice about nutrition and healthy lifestyle plus an exercise plan.

A jewel at Lake Lugano The Hotel Splendide Royal in Lugano celebrates its th 130 anniversary 50

With the opening of the Gotthard railway tunnel in 1882, the south of Europe was opened to travellers from the north. Ticino hotelier Riccardo Fedele was one of the first to recognise the new Zeitgeist and five years later he opened the Hotel Splendide Royal at the finest location on Lake Lugano. 130 years later, it still hasn’t lost any of the grandezza and charm of the Belle Epoque.

There are few hotels in the world that have changed ownership only once in 130 years or appointed a new general manager only four times in history. Built in 1887 by Riccardo Fedele from Ticino and later expanded by his son and nephew, the romantic palace above Lago di Lugano in south Ticino has been part of Dr. Roberto Naldi’s Italian hotel dynasty since 1977. Riccardo Fedele descendant from an aristocratic family from Bellinzona and already the hotelier at Hotel Bellevue in Cadenabbia (Lago di Como) - quickly recognised the potential that the north-south connection would bring to the region, which had been enabled by the construction project of the century - the opening of the Gotthard railway tunnel. Noble travellers followed the “Grand Tour” of British tourism pioneer Thomas Cook, happily making stops at Lake Lugano before the journey continued to Milan, Florence and Rome. Fedele purchased the beautiful Villa Merlina, situated in a park on the shores of Lago di Lugano, and built the luxury hotel Hotel Splendide on the historical estate.

51

N°2 2017 I AMBIANCE I HERITAGE

Royal guests The Hotel Splendide soon had an international reputation and to this day it is often the abode of royal families and prominent people from politics and culture. For this reason, Riccardo Fedele Junior decided to rename the hotel in 1956 to Hotel Splendide Royal. He took over management of the hotel together with the hotel management’s siblings after the death of his father, Riccardo Fedele Senior. In 1977, the heirs of the Fedele Family sold ownership of the Splendide Royal to the family of the engineer Giovanni Naldi. This was the start of the glorious era of Hotelier Aniello Lauro who managed the hotel for 30 long years. Aniello Lauro, descendant from a hotelier family from Sorrento, quickly learned that the secret to a hotel’s success was winning the confidence of the guests through engaging dialogue, impeccable service and by implementing his philosophy “the customer is king”. 1887 vom Tessiner Riccardo Fedele gebaut und eröffnet und später von dessen Sohn und Neffen weitergeführt, gehört das romantische Palais über dem Lago di Lugano seit 1977 der italienischen Hotelier-Dynastie von Dr. Roberto Naldi (links). Im Frühjahr 2008 wurde Giuseppe Rossi (rechts) mit der Leitung des Hotels Splendide Royal betraut. Built in 1887 by Riccardo Fedele from Ticino and later expanded by his son and nephew, the romantic palace above Lago di Lugano has been part of Dr. Roberto Naldi’s (left) Italian hotel dynasty since 1977. In Spring 2008, management of the Hotel Splendide Royal was entrusted to Giuseppe Rossi (right).

52

The legacy of Aniello Lauro In Spring 2008, management of the Hotel Splendide Royal was entrusted to Giuseppe Rossi. With many years of experience in the international hotel sector, it was important for him to continue the mission in the style of his predecessors. Rossi was a “pupil” of Aniello Lauro, who he took into his confidence. Not only did he promote him domestically, he also sent him abroad to spend years learning and travelling. “I am only the fifth General Manager since 1887; each hotelier was carefully selected by his predecessor and prepared for the task”, says Giuseppe Rossi. “It is an honour and a legacy that obliges”, Rossi adds. 2000m2 of spas and lavish parties Giuseppe Rossi knows exactly how he’d like to manage the Splendide Royal in the future. A new 2000m2 spa will be built by 2018. The annex building will be a harmonious addition in the park uphill behind the house. In addition, Rossi dreams of a fine dining restaurant where the hotel bar is currently situated. The hotel bar has been moved to the large lobby and reopened as a champagne bar. Then there’s the new banquet hall, which will be available for lavish parties of up to 250 people. The Hotel Splendide Royal embodies an elegant blend of tradition and modern lifestyle. Design, service and technology unite with the legacy of this traditionally-rich establishment. Giuseppe Rossi is proud as he speaks about the new wine cellar. What used to be the rest and waiting area for coachmen of guests who had travelled from far and wide, is now the realm of sommelier Simone Ragusa. The wine list at Splendide Royal isn’t just a wine list, it is a magazine that is updated and re-printed every three months. Hand-painted maps of the best wine regions in Ticino, Italy and other select terroirs adorn the walls of the wine cellar. You would be surprised to find out

that these hand-painted works of art and calligraphy aren’t made by an artist; they are painted by Sommelier Simone Ragusa... When it comes to cuisine the Splendide Royal brings a combination of native Ticino cuisine and Mediterranean influence to life. Chef Domenico Ruberto calls the concept “Two Souths”. He is referring to the south of Switzerland and southern Italy, and the characters of both places can be found on the menu. With its splendid view of the lake, Restaurant La Veranda features modern, Swiss-Italian cuisine that skilfully combines tradition and innovation, using only the best seasonal ingredients. During the summer months guests can eat on the restaurant’s fabulous terrace, which also boasts an exceptional panorama. Lugano’s new identity Lugano is repositioning itself. It is no longer just Switzerland’s third-largest financial centre that attracts visitors, what attracts visitors much more are the qualities of tranquillity, relaxation and slowing down that are alive here. The Mediterranean landscape and lifestyle on the shores of Lago di Lugano, combined with the cleanliness, security and reliability of Swiss culture, make it a blend that promises considerable quality of life. This is exactly what Giuseppe Rossi considers to be the future of the Splendide Royal. The recent “Happy Guest Award” gives him certainty that he is on the right track. The desire to provide the best service is what leads to success. Anyone who is Giuseppe Rossi and Dr. Roberto Naldi’s guest can sense this at every turn, and also look forward to all the planned new features. Giuseppe Rossi will continue to live his excitement for excellent service for a long time. When his time comes, he too will select and prepare his successor: The sixth hotelier in the Hotel Splendide Royal history.

The balance between creativity and simplicity Anne-Sophie Pic im Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne Anne-Sophie Pic at Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne

“Three stars – one of the best cuisines – worth a journey” is the official definition of Guide Michelin’s gourmet guide. The Restaurant Anne-Sophie Pic at the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne is definitely worth a visit since Anne-Sophie Pic decided to open the first affiliate to her famous “Maison Pic” in Valence, where she is awarded with three stars from the Guide Michelin.

The Beau-Rivage Palace has not closed its doors since 1861, and over the years has played host to many illustrious guests. Victor Hugo, Charlie Chaplin, Coco Chanel, Nelson Mandela and Tina Turner are just a few of the many famous names. Considered to be one of Europe’s finest hotels, the Beau-Rivage Palace remains true to its traditional values while at the same time constantly breathing new life into the hotel, matching the rapid and fascinating development of the “history of travel”. They call it “Tradition in Motion” here. This includes the art of fine dining as well.

The fourth woman in history to hold a third Michelin star While the famous “Maison Pic” in Valence (France) celebrates over 120 years of existence and of good cooking, and three generations have been honoured with the Michelin guide’s coveted three stars, Anne-Sophie Pic, the latest of this cooking dynasty, decided in 2009 for the first time to practice her art outside the family owned restaurant. This creative and delicious escapade is the fruit of a meeting with an establishment that is just as elegant, quality-conscious and renowned – the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne – but also a chance to try a new exercise in style. Anne- Sophie Pic made headlines in 2007 when she became only the fourth woman in history to hold a third Michelin star for her restaurant Maison Pic in Valence. Having taken over from her distinguished father and grandfather in the kitchen, and at just 41 years old, she was one of the most distinguished chefs in France, and still is today. Mother to a young son, Anne Sophie studied extensively in the US and Japan before returning to Valence to devote herself to the family restaurant. To start with, Anne-Sophie Pic didn’t want to follow in her famous father’s footsteps. In those days, the Haute Cuisine was a purely masculine domain. She set out to see the world and to study economics and business administration. It was one of her mentors at LVMH, where Anne-Sophie Pic did an internship, that motivated her to go back to her successful family business in Valence and to continue her father’s legacy. She had just started to learn how to cook when her father suddenly passed away. Three years after his death the restaurant lost his third Michelin star. “It was as if my father was dying all over again”, Anne-Sophie Pic says. It was one of the greatest most liberating moments in her career when Anne-Sophie Pic and her team managed to recapture the third Michelin star in 2007. “This was a huge satisfaction for me and a dedication to my beloved dad”, Anne-Sophie Pic said. And it is a tremendous achievement for an autodidact like her.

N°2 2017 I AMBIANCE I LE CHEF

A subtle shift in style What has Anne-Sophie Pic done in front of Switzerland’s sumptuous mountain peaks over the last few years? Her own cooking, of course, but with a subtle shift in style that allowed her to rethink, doubt and create something new. An exercise in style, in the true sense of the word. The result? A menu and two prix fixes that combine the elegant simplicity which is her trademark and the incandescent gold of luxury. A fruitful encounter, history, quality, the desire to go further together. While continuing to preside over her restaurant in Valence, the three star Michelin chef has entrusted the realisation of her creations in Lausanne to Kevin Gatin. The restaurant has been awarded two stars in the Michelin guide and 18 points in the GaultMillau.

Andenken an meinen geliebten Vater», erklärt Anne-Sophie Pic.

Complementing the beautiful natural surroundings Anne-Sophie Pic designed the menu of the Beau-Rivage Palace to complement the beautiful natural surroundings that can be seen from the hotel’s terrace. A mix of classic products including frogs’ legs and veal sweetbreads, cult ingredients such as red tuna and Dublin Bay prawns, and a tribute to the flowers of spring such as lavender, agastache and violets, a quest for purity in the presentations, simplicity while playing with contrasting textures. Anne-Sophie Pic has created a menu that leaves room for emotion and for appreciating the balance she achieves between creativity and simplicity. “Every day I get inspired by people I meet or by products I discover on the market”, says Anne-Sophie Pic. “Only when I stay curious, can I further develop my style of cooking”, she says, “and every day offers many opportunities to explore new ideas.” A magical process Cooking is always linked to many emotions as the human brain and its memory are very strongly based on tastes and olfaction. “That’s why one of my favourite menus is the “Poulet à l’estragon du dimanche” that my mother is still preparing in the age of over 80 years”, says Anne-Sophie Pic. Anne-Sophie Pic is blessed with an outstanding taste memory. Whenever she is exploring a new taste or a new product, she immediately tries to analyse, to arrange and to combine it with her “data base” in her head. To create new tastes and new surprising menus is a magic process, as she is describing it. But in the same time a very unsecure and difficult process, as the balance is per definition a very instable state…

The 36-year old native from Hamburg, Germany, previously managed the kitchen recipes at Marsa Malaz Kempinski Doha for two years, successfully opening the doors of the luxury house. After his training as a cook at the Kempinski Hotel Atlantik Hamburg, Roock’s path led him to Ticino for the first time where he worked as a junior chef at Hotel Giardino. After his position with Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s, additional stations followed in his career, which he refined by becoming a head chef and by his education at the Culinary Institute of America in California and New York. Before that, Roock had already made a name for himself as an Olympic champion with the German national junior team as well as a world champion in cooking. His passion here is Italian cuisine in particular, which he can experience to its fullest in Ticino. He will be able to give his dishes a very special touch with the products originating from the Castello del Sole’s and Terreni alla Maggia gardens.

Philippe Bossert new Executive Chef at the Mirador Resort & Spa Born in Alsace, Chef Philippe Bossert learnt the importance of quality ingredients from his chef father.

Malawi

Eiskunstläuferin Sarah Meier besucht als Botschafterin für das Schweizerische Rote Kreuz Malawi. Und packt gleich mit an.

Figure skater Sarah Meier visited Malawi as an ambassador for the Swiss Red Cross (SRC). And threw herself into it with gusto.

«Ich will nichts verschütten!»

Balancing a 35 kg water bucket on her head – even for top sportswoman Sarah Meier, 32, that’s too much. The figure skater from Zurich therefore only half filled the bucket. "I don’t want to spill any!" Carefully she lifted the precious cargo onto her head. "I’m full of respect for all the women here in Malawi, who daily bear such loads!" said Meier, who has visited the southern African country for the first time as an ambassador for the Swiss Red Cross.

It’s a pleasantly warm morning in Maganjira, a remote little village with simple mud brick houses in the north west of Malawi. Sarah Meier accompanies Yanani Mkandawire, 25, and her son Professor, 7, to the water hole. With such an aspirational name he should really be in school - but today the boy would rather pitch in at home during his waking hours. Together they pump the clean groundwater into their bucket from 45 metres down. The SRC built the well a year before. Previously Yanani and the other inhabitants of the village had to skim off the water for drinking, cooking and hand washing from a small, dirty stream. "The children constantly had diarrhoea and were sick. Today it is generally much better for them", says the mother.

The Swiss Red Cross has installed or renovated 48 water pumps in Malawi. Nearly 30,000 people now have access to clean water thanks to this. The villagers themselves built the walls around the well. A committee is responsible for the upkeep in each village. Since February it hasn’t rained in Malawi – a consequence of the climatic phenomenon called El Niño. Dried up corn husks litter the dusty path of the Mkandawires’ into the village. Small farming families such as them suffer the most. Maize is their staple food, Yanani cooks the white maize porridge Nzima almost every meal. "The portions keep getting smaller." But she is still managing to keep both her children, Professor and Kesnay, 9, supplied with water. SRC Ambassador Meier is impressed with the petite young woman. With a team of doctors and SRC volunteers Sarah Meier travels over pot-holed roads to the furthest corners of the province of Mzimba. Once a month the mobile health clinics come into the villages, to examine mothers and small children, to inoculate and to advise pregnant women. For Meier, who works as a journalist with Schweizer Illustrierte, her charitable commitment even now, when she still appears on "Art on Ice" is a matter of fact. "My fame allows me to help other people, who are not as fortunate as I am."

So hilft das SRK

How the SRC helps

Malawi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world. Since the end of 2013 the SRC has been promoting health in the former British colony in southern Africa. Along with the Malawian Red Cross they have been carrying out campaigns to raise awareness and to recruit blood donors. In order to improve hygiene, toilets and wells are set-up in schools and villages. In addition the SRC has been supporting the national blood donation service in improving its infrastructure.

Schatzsuche im Binntal

Treasure hunting in the Binntal Valley

The beautiful Binntal Valley is renowned for its rich variety of minerals; more than a dozen of them have been found nowhere else in the world. On a minerals excursion, visitors are guided by local mineral seekers to sites where they can see for themselves why the Binntal Valley is an Eldorado for precious stone collectors and learn how to find crystals and rare stones. After exploring the chasms armed with a crowbar and hammer, almost nobody leaves the Binntal Valley empty-handed.

There’s a simple remedy for bustle and stress: mountains, lakes and forests. Or, in a word: nature. If you’re stressed, just spend a few minutes in a natural environment and the tension will melt away. That’s why a stay in the wild is the ideal antidote to a restless daily routine. 68

Cultural change in the bathroom

Doch was unterscheidet gutes von wirklich perfektem Design?

Nowadays the word “design” is on everyone’s lips. There is hardly a bathroom manufacturer left who would not like to be considered part of this. But what distinguishes really perfect design from that which is merely good? “Good” is often merely fashionable, and therefore short-lived. For Christoph Behling, designer of luxury watches for TAG Heuer, solar-powered boats and Geberit sanitary products “good” is not enough.

Christoph Behling, Industriedesigner

Catch of the morning For more than 20 years, professional fisherman Rolf Meier has steered his small boat from Ermatingen onto Lake Constance at four o’clock every morning. He and his fishing nets are sometimes joined on board by a few guests, all enchanted by the sight of Lake Constance in the light of dawn. Back on land, they can watch the fishing family at work and even enjoy the freshly caught fish in the restaurant or on the sun terrace. Whitefish and pike have probably never tasted better.

Mr Behling, what does your work as a designer involve? My job is to design products that people can trust for a lifetime. In that sense, I don’t see myself as a designer who single-mindedly pursues his own visions, but rather as a part of the overall development process. It’s not my goal to put my own stamp on things – but to try and bring out the characteristics that are in their DNA. This is why it’s so important to me to work closely with my customers.

The forbidden green fairy

As the lead designer for TAG Heuer, you design luxury watches. Sanitary product manufacturer Geberit has also been a client of yours for many years. How do these two worlds fit together? I design top-quality Swiss watches for TAG Heuer and top-quality Swiss toilets for Geberit. The connection between the two is perfection.

The “green fairy” or “Jura milk”, as absinthe was known, was prohibited from 1910 to 2005. Yet it was still served clandestinely in bars, disguised in white plastic Ovaltine mugs. Philippe Martin, distiller of La Valote Martin absinthe, reveals that this spirit is made from wormwood, alcohol and water as well as up to twelve other herbs depending on the recipe. He also understands why it has always been secretly distilled and enjoyed in the Jura – despite the hefty fines.

“My task is to design products in such a way that they continue to convince for an entire lifetime.” Christoph Behling, industrial designer

Shower toilets are very successful in Asia. Do you think they’ve got what it takes to make it big on the European market too? Almost all the top hotels in London that I’m familiar with have installed shower toilets in their hotel rooms over the last three years. The same is also happening right now across Europe, in order to meet the demands of travellers from Asia who expect the same levels of hygiene that they get at home. Over the next few years, shower toilets will become standard in most five-star hotels. Therefore, for me it’s not a question of “if” fifty per cent of all households in Europe will have shower toilets, but simply “when”. I believe it will be less than 20 years before this milestone is reached.

Christoph Behling is numbered among the most respected industrial designers in Europe. He has designed high-quality sanitary products for Geberit while simultaneously doing the same for a number of timepieces for TAG Heuer.

Flying in a helicopter towards the island Félicité like a bird – nothing comes closer to approaching paradise than these first impressions of the dream island located in the north-eastern Seychelles. This is a place where seclusion and quietude, the total beauty of nature, a relaxed Creole lifestyle and the advantages of a luxury resort are perfectly combined.

The archipelago of 115 islands is considered to be one of the most exclusive year-round destinations with its deserted, white sandy beaches, a unique world of animals featuring giant tortoises, rays and rare birds and the unforgettable sunsets that are guaranteed to wow the spectator. The Seychelles are even popular amongst British Royals Kate and William, who went to the North Islands on their honeymoon.

We begin the trip to the isolated paradise at the Mahé international airport where a 20-minute helicopter ride takes us further to the 264 hectare island Félicité in the north-eastern part of the island nation. bergt.

Naturally, SIX Senses Zil Pasyon offers all ocean activity options in water that is consistently 25 to 30 degrees warm. Diving, snorkelling, sailing, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding are just as standard as the PADI, which guests can complete at the resort’s diving centre to then experience their first dives next to the colourful coral reefs. Your personal butler, the “Guest Experience Maker”, helps you plan activities and anticipates your every need. There is a Creole cooking class on the menu with fresh local ingredients, prepared with the assistance of exceptionally talented chefs, or exciting island hopping tours to the neighbouring islands of La Digue, Praslin, Curieuse and much more. An excursion to the neighbouring island of La Digue is a perfect day trip. A 30-minute ride by motorboat takes us to the paradise beach of Anse Source D’Argent, which can be recognised from the famous Raffaelo commercial: Overhanging palm trees, fine white sandy beach and granite cliffs that have been polished smooth by the ocean, behind it the untamed jungle with its fantastic flora and fauna. We definitely recommend a bike tour to discover the island. The neighbouring island of Praslin is situated off of Félicité’s other coast, and accommodates an 18-hole golf course with exceptionally beautiful views. We will take a guided tour of the Praslin National Park in the island’s interior. The Vallée de Mai, declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983, is situated amidst the national park: a palm forest that has been untouched since 1930, where Coco de Mer grows - the largest and most erotically shaped nut in the world. Curieuse island, on the other hand is a south-sea dream come true, where taking a walk reveals a world of animals more novel than the last. Picturesque coves are home to wild giant tortoises, while giant crabs and geckos seek shelter in the sandy soil of the mangrove forests.

planning a small number of villas for Félicité Island with living space ranging from 200 to 500 m2, and a few residences starting at 620 m2 - some of which have already been built. Each villa has been designed by famous British architect Richard Hywel Evans (Studio RHE) and is embedded harmoniously into Félicité’s tropical landscape. The two-storey residences have three or four bedrooms with ensuite bathroom, a modern equipped living room combined with kitchen, and a living room bathed in light with adjoining sun deck and large infinity pool (44 m2). It even has a partial glass floor and is embedded in the ceiling of the living room so that the colours and water create spectacular reflecting effects in the rooms.

What were your first experiences and connections with the Beau-Rivage Genève? The Beau-Rivage has been a private establishment since 1865, managed by the members of the same family since its founding. I grew up associated with the hotel and saw how it changed. Today, the Beau-Rivage Genève has transformed in harmony with its history and we are opening eight new attic suites with an unobstructed view of the lake.

Was bedeutet für Sie erstklassiger Service?

Partners of Swiss Top Events:

Why did you become the hotel manager? The ability to undertake something in order to do things differently is what attracted me more than the position itself. What does first-class service mean to you? First-class service is a competition offered by every hotel that asks questions about service. I think the most important thing is offering service that one has made their own. It is important to provide an experience that is as unique and as different as possible. What do you think is your biggest challenge as the new manager of the BeauRivage? The biggest challenge that we face is the economic downturn that appears to be spreading. Which experiences have influenced you the most throughout the course of your career? If experiences are influential it means that you have learned something and therefore have made progress. I was lucky to join a service design laboratory that probably influenced me the most because we often have the answers we need within reach. Asking questions and communicating with few methods is far more efficient than long, contact-free inquiries. What is your preferred tip as an expert for discovering this beautiful region of Geneva and Lake Léman? Come to Geneva! People think they know the city because they often have preconceptions about it. It is an active, beautiful city full of history. Just taking a ‘Mouette’, a boat that can manoeuvre through the roadsteads, brings on a holiday feeling. The old city is absolutely beautiful. Be sure to visit the Eaux-Vives or Plainpalais quarters with its restaurants, bars and art galleries! And you can go skiing just 30-45 minutes away from Geneva, in any direction! 77
