Poland and Warsaw Must-know

Jubilee

O

n the 19th of November 1816, on the initiative of two Polish thinkers of the Enlightenment, Stanisław Kostka Potocki and Stanislaw Staszic, Tsar Alexander I granted the foundation act of the University of Warsaw. This happened at a time when Poland was wiped off the map of Europe so the University had an obligation to not only advance science and provide education but also sustain Polish national identity. Its success in this area can be measured by strong participation of university students and professors in the November Uprising of 1930, which resulted in the closure of the University for three decades. This was not the only difficult moment in the history of the University – another came during World War II when Nazi invaders prohibited its activity. The university lecturers again rose to the challenge, undertaking clandestine teaching in private homes. Thanks to them the University could open its doors again in 1945. Today the University of Warsaw meets the new challenges posed by rapidly changing, globalised world: the need for internationalisation of the educational process and for innovativeness as an response to market needs, while taking care of high quality of education and research.

Time Zone Poland lies in the Central time zone (GMT + 01:00). Weather November weather requires some preparation. It is a cold and rainy month, characterised by considerable variability in weather conditions The temperature can vary between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius and there may be some fog. Language The official language of Poland is Polish. However, due to a large number of tourists visiting Warsaw, you can communicate in English in many places like cafes, restaurants and museums. Currency & ATMs The currency of Poland is the złoty, which is divided into 100 groszy. One złoty is worth 0,23 EUR. ATMs are located all over Warsaw. Telephone To call a number in Poland you have to dial the Country Code +48 and then - if you are calling a landline number - the City Area Code 22 for Warsaw, followed by the telephone number of the person or institution you wish to reach. 112 is the national emergency telephone number. Voltage The voltage in Poland is 230 V, which is the same one as in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Post Office There is a post office on the main campus of the University of Warsaw, in the Auditorium Maximum building. Its opening hours are: Monday–Friday 8:30–14:00. Tourist Information Warsaw tourist office is located in the Old Town. Address: 19/21/21a Rynek Starego Miasta Phone +48 22 19 431 E-mail: [email protected] Website: http://www.warsawtour.pl/en

Study tour of academic Warsaw

Dinner in Wilhelm Landau’s Bank

Warsaw is the seat of 15 public and over 50 private institutions of higher education. The aim of the tour is to show the participants the premises of the two oldest universities in the city: the University of Warsaw, which is currently celebrating its 200th anniversary, and Warsaw University of Technology which is 100 years old. From their establishment, both these universities have been inextricably linked to the history of Warsaw and in some measure also the history of the entire Republic of Poland. Participants of the Study Tour of Academic Warsaw will be picked up from the main campus by a coach. The itinerary of the tour includes visiting the following universities: University of Warsaw Library

University of Warsaw

Polish Academy of Sciences

Address: 38 Senatorska st.

The building of the former Landau’s Bank, located at 38 Senatorska St., is one of very few buildings in Warsaw that survived World War II. It was built in the years 1904 – 1906 according to the design of two architects: Stanislaw Grochowicz from Warsaw and Gustaw Landau-Gutenteger from Lodz. The bank stayed in business until 1925. During WWII the building was used by a nearby hospital, but despite this survived the turmoil of war mostly unharmed. After 1945, the building hosted an institute of party propaganda, which used the bank vault to store political pamphlets instead of money. UW students will be waiting in the lobby of the former University Library until 18:30, when they will lead the conference participants to the dinner venue at 38 Senatorska St.

Restaurants

Sweet Warsaw

U FUKIERA Address: 27 Rynek Starego Miasta Http://ufukiera.pl/?lang=en

The culinary symbols of the capital of Poland are its sweet specialties: the Warsaw desserts Wuzetka and Zygmuntówka, traditional donuts from Blikle, and Wedel’s chocolate.

The building which houses the restaurant has an unusual history. Built in the 15th century by a famous wine merchant Grzegorza Korab, it had an impressive collection of wines hidden in its cellar. In the early 18th century the house was acquired by the Fukier family, which continued the tradition of collecting the oldest and finest wines. In 1939, the Nazis emptied Fukier’s wine cellars. After the war, the old tenement “U Fukiera” was restored and now houses a restaurant, where for the last 20 years patrons can discover the tastes of the Polish cuisine.

A. Blikle Confectionery Address: 35 Nowy Świat St.

WARSZAWA WSCHODNIA Address: 25 Mińska St. Http://gessler.sohofactory.pl/en/ In addition to the dishes of the old Polish cuisine, quests of the restaurant can try dishes loved by the French in a beautifully arranged place, located in the Warsaw district of Praga. The restaurant is ready to accommodate guests at all times, day and night. INFORMAL KITCHEN Address: 2 Plac Małachowskiego (entrance from Traugutta St.) Http://informalkitchen.pl/?page_id=10278 Guided by the slogan “authentic, simple and tasty”, the owners of this restaurant invite their guests to try dishes inspired by old recipes and selected ingredients used in various regions of Poland and Europe, as well as their culinary experiences and memories of exotic journeys. KAFE ZIELONY NIEDŹWIEDŹ Address: 4 Smolna St. (entrance from Kruczkowskiego St.) Http://www.kafezn.pl/index.php/en/ Kafe Zielony Niedzwiedz serves contemporary Polish cuisine, where culinary technique is entirely subordinated to seasonal flavours while taking care of the high quality of the products used. Der Elefant Address: 1 Plac Bankowy Http://derelefant.com/en This spacious, multi-level restaurant is housed in modernized, historic interiors. Its courtyard was designed by Oscar-winning stage designer Alan Starsky. The menu is based on .fresh, local products, best quality meats and travel inspirations of the chefs. Next to the famous Alaskan crabs, the restaurant serves fresh fish and seafood from all over the world. Life jazz is played in Der Elefant in the evenings.

The Blikle Confectionery was set up by Antoni Kazimierz Blikle on 11 September 1869. For over 140 years of its operation, it was owned by subsequent generations of the Blikle family, bearing witness to the history of Warsaw and Poland. From the very beginning the confetionery has been located at the same address: Holowczyc Palace, 35 Nowy Świat. E. Wedel Chocolate Drink Bar Address: 45 Krakowskie Przedmieście St. E. Wedel is the oldest brand of chocolate in Poland.. Its name derives from the signature of the founder’s son, Emil Wedel, who used it to distinguish his products from competitors’. In 1851, Karol Wedel opened his first confectionary on Miodowa St. in Warsaw. Among other things, its menu featured drinking chocolate. In 1930 the company opened a chocolate factory in the Warsaw district of Praga and soon added new product lines such as Ptasie Mleczko (soft meringue covered in chocolate). WUZETka The original recipe for this cream pie comes from the turn of the 1940’s and 1950’s.. It is chocolate sponge cake with whipped cream topped with chocolate icing. There are several theories explaining the name Wuzetka. The most popular one derives it from W-Z Route, which was the first major road investment in Warsaw after WWII. Another theory says the pie takes its name from Warszwskie Zakłady Ciastkarskie, which used to produce it. Yet another claims it is a phonetic transcription of the abbreviation WZK, which was used by housewives as a short for cake or pie with cream. What is certain is that wuzetka is the queen of Warsaw desserts. Zygmuntówka NOVA Confectionery Witold Teledzinski Address: 41 Krakowskie Przedmieście St. This dessert won the 2009 competition for the new Warsaw cake. Its name was selected from the proposals sent by Internet users. The base of Zygmuntówka is made of almond cake, topped with whipped cream, cranberry jam, chocolate mousse and an odd-shaped meringue. It is one serious dose of sweetness!
