I Vysočina Region

Today, the Czech Republic has twelve monuments listed as UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Three lie in the Vysočina Region. Forming an imaginary triangle with only around 40 km between themselves, visitors may comfortably visit all three over a weekend. But just imagine – all nine other sites are within two hours by car.

This historical city core, enclosed by ponds and gates, has retained its distinctive look since the times of Zachariáš of Hradec. The original 13th-century royal water castle founded at a trade route crossroads got its contemporary appearance through 16th-century reconstruction, as did the city historical core. Architect B. Maggi of Arogno designed the vast Renaissance chateau complex. The chateau holds ostentatious interiors with unique adornment, period furniture and invaluable collections. Visitors may choose between two tour circuits. The first features the original Gothic part and Renaissance halls with preserved wooden coffered ceilings and priceless furniture. The second shows the living quarters serving the chateau’s last owners, the Podstatský family of Lichtenstein. A cleverly designed garden with park lies beside the chateau. A museum in the former burgrave‘s house features ethnographic collections and city historical exhibits. Besides its chateau, the quintessential landmark in Telč is its triangular square lined with Renaissance and Baroque townhouses. The look of Telč is made complete with its city gates, Baroque fountains and statues.

The fire station is the newest building on the square in Telč. A Gothic vaulted gate with 17th-century Renaissance gable once stood here in its place, serving as the entrance to the meat market. The fire station was built here after a fire in 1871 to serve the newly formed volunteer fire brigade. Today, the gallery holds occasional exhibitions.

The true historical center of Žďár nad Sázavou is the former Cistercian monastery complex, today‘s chateau. The monastery most greatly flourished in the first half of the 18th century under abbot Václav Vejmluva. At this time, Santini led its complex Baroque redesign. Today, the chateau holds several noteworthy exhibits and exhibitions. It also features a book museum that is world-famous and Europe‘s largest. www.zamekzdar.cz

Žďár nad Sázavou lies at the upper Sázava River in the heart of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands in the stunning Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The first settlement originated by an old provincial trail at a  Cistercian monastery founded by Boček of  Obřany in 1252. Despite this, Žďár only became a city in 1607.

Pilgrimage Church of St. John   of Nepomuk at Zelená hora UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 1994. The Church of St. John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora (Green Mountain) near the Žďár monastery owes its existence to the close and beneficial cooperation of two key figures. The idea came from the Žďár Cistercian monastery abbot, Václav Vejmluva, a  known admirer of John of Nepomuk. Famous architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichl designed the structure. In light of the church‘s importance, it was built on the hill above the monastery. In September 1722, it became the first major shrine consecrated to St. John of Nepomuk. The church is considered the pinnacle of Santini‘s creation, representing a  timeless work, relieved of conventional elements of period architecture. It is built in the shape of a  five-pointed star. This comes from the legend of a  fivepointed star crown appearing at the spot where John of Nepomuk had drown. The magical and symbolic number five is found repeatedly in other structural elements. There are five entrances to the complex, and the church has five chapels with five altars. The cloister surrounding the church has a tenpointed star shape with openings to the five gates.

ŽĎár nad sázavou

ŽĎÁR NAD SÁZAVOU

Right beside the chateau (former monastery) stand other structures linked to architect J. B. Sanitini. He designed the Lower Cemetery with four chapels with a skull-shaped layout in 1709. An unknown sculptor created eight saintly statues in the 1760s that adorn the old stone triple-arch bridge.

Nature trail around Green Mountain The nature trail has two circuits. The first circuit winding around Bránský Pond is 2.1 km long and presents certain relatively unknown structures by Santini. The second 2.6 km circuit leads to places with the highest natural landscape protection. It runs by Konvent Pond, where the dock renders a pretty view of the chateau in Žďár.

Santini incorporated the symbolism of five into his project based on a legend about John of Nepomuk. It symbolizes the Five Wounds of Christ, the five letters in the Latin word tacui (“I kept silent”), and mainly the five stars in Nepomuk‘s crown allegedly appearing in the Vltava River above the martyr‘s drown body. The cupola feature a likeness of the saint‘s tongue symbolizing his keeping of confessional secrets.

St. Procopius Basilica

TŘEBÍČ

I  I

The Romanesque basilica stands in place of a previous wooden monastery church. It suffered during the siege of Třebíč by the Magyar armies of Matyáš Korvín in 1468. Over two centuries later, it served secular needs – as a horse stable, a granary and brewery. Consecrated to St. Procopius, it resumed its churchly function after restoration in 1725-31. Its boasts a  Gothic crypt with original, over seven centuries-old timbering of the ceiling between stone vault ribs, the presbytery vaulting with double eight-section stone vault, the round rose-window in the cloister‘s eastern end and the north entrance portal. The basilica‘s current appearance is the result of modifications led by architect Kamil Hilbert in 1924-35.

TŘEBÍČ Over the centuries, Třebíč became an important center of the Vysočina. It rose upon foundations of a  medieval settlement linked to the establishment of the Benedictine monastery in 1101 by Moravian princes. The monastery was among the kingdom‘s richest and became an important learning center. Its advantageous position between the royal cities of Brno, Jihlava and  Znojmo led to the city‘s founding on both banks of the Jihlava River. The oldest recorded deed comes from 1277, and Třebíč became a city in 1335. The city‘s early stature is reflected in its large square with many preserved townhouses.

Jewish Quarter Třebíč was once a Moravian Jewish cultural center, as evidenced by its uniquely preserved Jewish Quarter. The presence of Jews in Třebíč was first mentioned in writing in 1338. At that time, several families lived scattered across town. After 1723, when Jews were forced to live in ghettos, the families moved to the area of Podklášteří. The Jewish Quarter is comprised of 123 preserved homes with buildings of former Jewish institutions – the town hall, rabbinate, poorhouse, hospital and school. The Front (Old) Synagogue lies on the former ghetto’s western edge, and today serves the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. The Rear (New) Synagogue was built around 1669 in Renaissance style. In the Women’s Gallery there is an exhibit relating to Jewish traditions and customs, and visitors here may also see a model of the Jewish ghetto as it looked in 1850.

Seligmann Bauer House Seligmann Bauer had this house built shortly before 1798 on the so-called Spanish Grounds. Its importance and value are mainly found in its direct affiliation with the Rear Synagogue. The ground floor contains a  shop reminiscent of one of the businesses commonly run by the Jewish population. The rear tract holds a modernly equipped kitchen for occasionally preparing kosher meals. The second floor presents typical living of a  rather humble Jewish family in the period between the World Wars.

4

Jewish Cemetery The original Jewish cemetery was destroyed during the siege by Matyáš Korvín in 1468. A half-century later, a new cemetery emerged on the slope of Hrádek Hill. on the slope of Hrádek Hill. Its size of 11,772 m2 makes it one of the nation‘s largest Jewish cemeteries. The entire cemetery holds roughly 11,000 graves and 3,000 gravestones; the oldest is from 1625. The cemetery also has a ceremonial hall from 1903.

The museum resides in the former Waldstein chateau, originally a Benedictine monastery rebuilt in the 16th-century. The main entrance to the complex lies between two Renaissance buildings. The three-wing chateau closes off a square courtyard with St. Procopius Basilica. A park lies to the west, and remnants of the monastery fortification tower lie to the east. Museum exhibits feature regional natural resources – minerals and rocks and the Protected Area of Třebíčsko. The Moravian moldavite exhibit is truly unique.
