UNC Asheville Mission Statement

UNC Asheville is a selective, public liberal arts institution. UNC Asheville ’s Intercollegiate Athletics Program reflects the attitudes and values underlying the University’s overall mission: academic excellence, diversity, equity, integrity, service, and accomplishment. The UNC Asheville athletics program contributes to this liberal arts culture in two ways. First, athletics programs foster a sense of community and pride by fielding NCAA Division I teams and developing talented student-athletes who successfully represent UNC Asheville in competition and reflect the University’s commitment to overall excellence. Accordingly, the athletics program encourages an atmosphere of respect for self and others through the development of ethical conduct, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship and provides equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women, minorities and indivduals of all sexual identities. Second, the program provides an additional campus experience for capable students to grow and develop academically, personally, socially, and athletically. This experience promotes institutional commitment and pride on the part of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Outlook

Bulldogs Upbeat Heading into 2006 Season The UNC Asheville men’s soccer team hopes that the learning lessons from the 2005 season will pay dividends in 2006. Steve Cornish’s team faced a “Perfect Storm” in 2005. The Bulldogs were slowed by injuries to key veteran players and had to face a pretty tough non-conference schedule. Cornish was forced to play freshmen for most of the season and while there were plenty of bright moments, UNC Asheville struggled to a 2-15-1 overall record. “We played much better than our record,” stated Cornish. “We were thoroughly inexperienced. Even the returning players we had were inexperienced. “I don’t think we were as bad as our record suggested but in the end we just couldn’t find ways to win matches,” explained Cornish. “However, on the positive side, a lot of young players got valuable experience. We still will be a fairly young team this year but we will be an experienced young team.” Cornish is upbeat about the 2006 season after a very successful spring. The Bulldogs picked up some transfers in January and veteran players like Barrett Locke and Nathan Neal were able to play in the ra spring. Michael Perie “We were so much improved in the spring,” said Cornish. “The spring season showed what we were missing in the fall. We now have players who have played significant minutes on the field.” GOALKEEPER One area that appears to be in good shape with experience is goalkeeper. Junior Michael Pereira has been a starter for UNC Asheville in goal the past two years. He was a Big South All-Rookie selection in 2004 and started all 18 matches for the Bulldogs in 2005. “Michael is a two-year starter and last year he was our most experienced player on the field for much of the season,” admitted Cornish. “He had a solid year but we didn’t give him enough help. I expect him to have a much better season in 2006 because we’ll have more help to provide him.” Pereira will be backed up by sophomore Phillip Horner and freshman transfer Judd Lawrence. Horner was hurt for much of last season but is healthy now. “Phillip was slowed down by an injury last year but appears to be 100 percent for the upcoming year. Judd should provide depth this season.”

DEFENSE UNC Asheville struggled in the back with inexperience and injuries. The Bulldogs should be much better here this season. Cornish’s club has some key players returning and new ones coming in that should make this area a real strength in 2006. “There were a lot of question marks in the back,” explained Cornish. “We simply were never able to have a consistent line-up the entire year due to injuries. “This year things will be much different,” added Cornish. “We have good players returning who are healthy and added some transfers who will help us right away.” The Bulldogs return senior Chris Burn to the back this year. The talented native of England had an up-and-down season in 2005 as he was plagued by nagging injuries. He started in 12 of 14 matches and recoded an assist. “We’re delighted that Chris Burn should be fully ready to play in 2006,” declared Cornish. “I think he’ll be ready to have a great senior season as I believe he has something to prove. He’s a talented defender who I expect to be a leader in the back.” Junior John Hillman was a bright spot for the Bulldogs. He was Asheville’s most consistent performer in the back. The Raleigh native has been a starter for two straight years. “John was somebody we could always count on,” said Cornish. “I expect him to be even better this year because he has two years of playing in the back plus some help with our newcomers.” Sophomore Benjamin Meyer was forced to play a great deal as a freshman. He worked hard and should be one of the many young players who got valuable experience. “Ben impressed us with his work ethic,” said Cornish. “He is a hard worker who is always willing to learn. He became a versatile player who can help us in the back and at midfield.” Junior Nick Baud played both at midfield and in the back last season. He’ll be used more in the back this season. “Nick turned into a consistent starter due to the injuries we had,” admitted Cornish. “When called upon, Nick got the job done. We’re going to keep him in the back this year. He’s a very good passer and does a great job of crossing the ball.” The Bulldogs have some experienced newcomers ready to make an impact in the back. Alex Morrow and Patrick Tate have come to UNC Asheville via East Carolina. The duo were key players for the Pirate program before East Carolina dropped its program after the 2005 Asheville Men’s Soccer

5

Outlook

season. Morrow is a junior this season and played extensively for the Pirates last year. He scored a goal and started in 14 matches. Morrow came to UNC Asheville last January and played for the Bulldogs in the spring. “We were fortunate that Alex was able to join our program in January and he made an immediate impact,” explained Cornish. “He is a good passer with the ball and is quite strong in the air. We look forward to him making a big contribution this fall.” Tate joins the Asheville program as a sophomore. He started in 10 matches for East Carolina in 2005. Tate will make his debut with the Bulldogs in 2006. “Patrick got some valuable experience as a freshman and was expected to be a key player for East Carolina if it had kept its program,” commented Cornish. “We expect him to push our starters for playing time. He’s tall (6-1) and very good in the air.” The Bulldogs are excited to add a transfer from Clemson to the back. Sophomore Edwin Wotortsi was with the Tigers program for two years. He red-shirted in 2004 and played in three matches for a Clemson squad that advanced to the Final Four last season. Wotortsi came to Asheville in January and made his presence known right away. “Nobody works harder that Edwin and he’s the type of player that makes everyone around him better,” stated Cornish. “He brings an attitude to our program that he knows what it’s like to go to a Final Four as a player. We need someone like him in our program. “Obviously, Edwin made an immediate impact with our program this past spring and I expect him to be a real force for us this fall,” added Cornish. MIDFIELDER One area the Bulldogs return experience in is in midfield. Asheville returns all of its midfielders and get a key player back from injury. Start with senior Andrew Klerekoper. The Oklahoma native has been a two-year starter for the Bulldogs. He’s a versatile player who can also play in the back. Klerekoper has scored three career goals with two of them being game-winners. “Andrew is a very consistent player and has been a key player for our program,” declared Cornish. “He is an excellent passer and has good vision. Andrew seems to score important goals, and we look for him to have a great senior season.” Cornish is delighted to have sophomore Nathan Neal return. Neal enjoyed a standout freshman season in 2004 and was a big reason the Bulldogs played so well at the end of the year. He scored three goals and had nine points as a rookie but missed last season with an injury. His presence was missed. “We really missed Nathan Neal,” stated Cornish. “He was playing so well at the end of his freshman year and when he didn’t play that really hurt our team. “Thankfully Nate is ready to play this year and should be one of the top midfielders in the Big South,” added Cornish. “He’s a threat to score from anywhere on the field. Nate has good vision and has a very high work rate.” Sophomore Ryan Haupt was a rookie who ended up playing a great deal last year. He started in 15 matches and scored two goals on the year. “Ryan was one of our freshmen who really got better as the season went on,” stated Cornish. “We’re looking for

6 Asheville Men’s Soccer

him to play as a center midfielder, and I anticipate him doing quite well this fall.” Ian Willmot was enjoying an excellent rookie campaign in 2006 before getting hurt and missing the second half of the season. He had started the first 11 games of the year. “Ian started out so well before his season was cut short by an injury,” commented Cornish. “We were able to get him back in the spring and he really made a Andrew Kle rekoper difference. We look for a big year from Ian.” UNC Asheville has two freshmen who will vie for playing time. They are Nathaniel Jones and Taylor Shanklin. “Nate has good individual skills and is excellent on the ball,” said Cornish. “We like Taylor’s abilities and he could see playing time on the left side of our midfield.” FORWARD The Bulldogs have some experience and talent returning up front and if all goes well, this position could be one of the best in the Big South this season. Start with red-shirt senior Barrett Locke. The Oklahoma native has scored 17 career goals and is one of the top goal scorers the Bulldogs have ever had on their roster. He has scored some big goals for Asheville in his career before missing most of last year with an injury. Locke did play in the spring and looked solid. “Barrett was quite sharp this spring and if he can stay away from injuries, I don’t see why he can’t score a lot of goals,” stated Cornish. “He’s an excellent finisher and always seems to play well in Big South Conference matches. Junior Daniel Bandoly had a nice year for the Bulldogs in 2005. He scored three goals and led Asheville in assists with six. Bandoly is a talented striker who has gotten better with each season. “Daniel did a nice job and should be even better with Barrett Locke back,” declared Cornish. “Daniel plays with a good pace and is always involved when we go forward.” Scott Szymaksi and Caleb Alexander were freshmen last season whom had to play a great deal in their rookie year. They both benefited from playing as Szymanski led Asheville in goals scored with five, while Alexander started in 10 matches in 2005. Szymanski earned a spot on the Big South All-Rookie team. “Scott was certainly a bright spot in a tough year,” explained Cornish. “He never got a chance to play with

Outlook

Barrett last season and when they teamed up this spring, they were a very effective duo. “We really like Caleb’s versatility,” added Cornish. “He has good vision and balance. We think Caleb can be a real provider of goals this year.” Cornish may have found a newcomer who can make a real impact up front this season in East Carolina transfer J.W. Gallagher. As a freshman in 2004, he scored four goals and added five assists for the Pirates, earning a spot on the Conference USA All-Rookie team. Gallagher only played in one match last year because of an injury. “J.W. is a player we are very happy to have join our program,” declared Cornish. “We believe he can be a difference-maker as a striker. He was highly touted at East Carolina and was a great freshman two years ago. J.W. is somebody who should help us right away.” David Verga rounds out the strikers. Like many players last year, he struggled with injuries but he gives the Bulldogs a good target player. “David is an intelligent player who plays well with his back to goal,” said Cornish. “He is deceptively good if we can provide better service he will contribute some goals.” SCHEDULE Home matches with Charlotte and Kentucky plus a date with Final Four participant Clemson highlights the 2006 UNC Asheville men’s soccer schedule. The Bulldogs will open their 17-match schedule with a home date against Atlantic 10 foe Charlotte at Greenwood Field on Aug. 25. It will be the first time the 49ers have ever played at UNC Asheville. Cornish’s club travels to Gardner-Webb (Aug. 30) and Campbell (Sept. 2) before coming home for two straight matches. The Bulldogs host Wofford (Sept. 6) before welcoming Kentucky to Greenwood Field on Sept. 9. The Wildcats compete in Conference USA in soccer and are expected to be one of the top teams in their league this season. “We’re excited about our schedule,” stated Cornish. “We’re pleased to bring teams like Charlotte and Kentucky to Greenwood Field this season. Both are very good teams that will prepare us for Big South Conference play.” The Bulldogs hit the road for two matches in Nashville, Tenn. UNC Asheville plays at Belmont (Sept. 15) and Lipscomb (Sept. 17) before coming home to entertain Appalachian State (Sept. 20). The Dogs begin a two-game road trip at Elon (Sept. 23) and then open Big South Conference play at defending champion Coastal Carolina (Sept. 26). The match with the Chanticleers starts a stretch of five straight league games for Asheville. The Bulldogs come home to take on Radford (Sept. 30) and Winthrop (Oct. 4) before playing at Liberty (Oct. 7) and High Point (Oct. 11).
