UN Millennium Development Goals At the UN Millennium Summit of 2000 heads of state and government from 189 countries signed onto the Millennium Declaration. This declaration consists of 8 development goals that should be realized by 2015: 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; 2. Achieve universal primary education; 3. Promote gender equality and empower women; 4. Reduce child mortality; 5. Improve maternal health; 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; 7. Ensure environmental sustainability; 8. Develop a global partnership for development. The foundation of the Kofi Annan Business School is an implementation of the UN Millennium Goals project that stresses the importance of knowledge exchange between ‘Southern’ and ‘Western’ universities. The decision to create the Kofi Annan Business School is the result of a meeting hosted by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi A. Annan in Geneva on 21st November 2006. At this meeting the Dean of Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School, Roland van Dierdonck, Hogeschool Utrecht President of the Board Geri Bonhof, PA International Secretary General Rio D. Praaning Prawira Adiningrat and PA International Director Hans Nijhoff presented their plan to start a business school. This business school would select the most promising students and young professionals to be designated as “Kofi Annan Fellows” from developing countries to receive business and management education at Hogeschool Utrecht and Vlerick. The education which would lead to a bachelor’s degree in business administration, management and entrepreneurship, will be fully funded by the participating business schools (tuition fees) and corporate and government contributions. Following this meeting Kofi Annan consented to give his name to this unique business school project.

“It takes time to grow the small and large businesses able to create the jobs and income needed. So we must start now. Nothing less will help to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.”

Kofi Annan Business School The Kofi Annan Business School is a joint initiative of the Public Advice International (PA International), Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School (Vlerick) and Hogeschool Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (HU). The business school selects the most promising students and young professionals from developing countries to earn a university degree at one of the best business schools of the European Union. The Kofi Annan Business School aims to stimulate local entrepreneurship. The start and growth of small and medium-sized enterprises is of crucial importance for economic development and the establishment of democratic institutions in the target countries. The initiative is an implementation of the UN Millennium Goals project that stresses the importance of sharing knowledge between ‘Southern’ and ’Western’ universities.

The selected students, called ‘Kofi Annan Fellows’, will receive their education free of charge. After their education the students return to their native areas to apply their knowledge and experience in the establishment and growth of small and large businesses, able, in Mr. Annan’s words, to create the jobs and income needed as well as to stimulate others to do likewise. The students will be selected through the auspices of local schools, voluntary organizations, NGOs and chambers of commerce. The students will receive an excellent entrepreneurial education and the chance to build an international network. In addition, the students will get practical experience by carrying out a project in their country of origin. The EU universities will liaise with colleagues from local academic organizations to help them with the theoretical background for these projects. Local universities in the developing world will assist the Kofi Annan Business School in the selection of the students. At HU, students will be enrolled in a three-year Bachelor’s degree programme in Business Administration; at Vlerick, they will be enrolled in the MBA programme or any of three other Master’s degree programmes. In the first stage the five countries from which students will be selected are Indonesia, India, Peru, Kenya and Zambia.

Kofi Annan Business School is an initiative of: Public Advice International (PA International) PA International has offices in The Hague and Brussels and was established to assist in humanitarian, environmental and socio-economic development projects worldwide. It is a non-profit organization that taps into international networks and the resources of its commercial organizations PA Europe (Brussels), PA Asia (Hong Kong, Beijing, Jakarta), PA Middle East (Muscat) and PA Russia (Moscow). Over the past 3 years, PA International has successfully been involved in the identification, coordination and implementation of, and fund-raising for, a large number of socio-economic development projects in the South. The main focus is on sustainable private sector entrepreneurial development, and projects always include a capacity-building component through the involvement of local universities. Once PA International identifies a project area, it acts as the consultant for the project by identifying and formulating the community-based project, submitting project proposals to donor agencies and/or private organizations, and coordinating the project. In this way, it continues to work closely with UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, and the EU, as well as with NGOs and private funding agencies.

The department of International Business & Management Studies (IBMS), which designs the Bachelor’s degree programme in Business Administration, focuses on strengthening SME development, both in Europe and abroad, and has a solid network in this field. Besides providing outplacements in this sector to its students, both in the Netherlands and abroad, lecturer-exchange programs with partner universities are also common practice. Studying in Utrecht and Leuven Utrecht Utrecht is a combination of a rich past and a dynamic present. The city is located in the heart of the Netherlands and is known for its Dom church and tower, museums and especially for its romantic canals. Thanks to its central position, Utrecht is one of the most important cities in the Netherlands. All rail, road and water transport systems come together in Utrecht. Amsterdam is just 30 minutes away and other major European cities can be reached within a few hours. Utrecht has a population of 275,000 and is the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands. Since it has a population of approximately 60,000 students, this makes it a vibrant student city filled not only with bars, cafeterias and clubs but also with museums, cultural centres, libraries and cinemas. The ’Uitwijk’ is a social and cultural centre: a meeting place for students and staff where you can play games, read magazines or watch a movie (most in English) free of charge. It also offers courses in English at reduced prices. Parnassos is the international and cultural centre that offers a number of music, theatre and dance courses for students at reasonable prices. Sports facilities are open to all students at Sport Centre Olympus located on De Uithof campus. This centre has tennis courts, playing fields, a fitness room and three sport halls where you can apply for courses ranging from fencing and yoga to salsa and street dance. Utrecht’s canals are best explored in a canoe or water bike or from the many terraces on the wharf. The European Students Network (ESN Utrecht) aims to ensure that international students in Utrecht feel at home, have a great time, meet a lot of new people, and get a good glimpse of Dutch student life and Dutch culture in general.

Leuven The Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School is located in Belgium, the heart of Europe, and more specifically in the beautiful historic towns of Leuven and Ghent. Students have been enrolled in the full-time and part-time international MBA programmes at the Leuven Campus since September 2000. Nowadays, the building is also being used more and more often for other post-graduate programmes and activities organized by Vlerick. Since the campus is located right in the middle of Leuven, shops, restaurant, cinemas, sports facilities and places of historical interest are all close at hand.
