Overview

02 | 03

ULTRASONIC – the technology of the future. ULTRASONIC is a future-oriented technology for diverse industries who are pressured by a rapidly growing demand. Due to the kinematic overlapping of rotation with added oscillation (in axial direction) on the diamond tool, high-performance materials that pose difficulties for metal-removal technology using conventional methods can now be successfully machined – efficiently and with perfect results. ULTRASONIC machining leads 3-fold productivity increases for hard machining of advanced materials. Reduced process forces permit the manufacturing of thin walls, lead to longer tool service life and significantly reduce micro-cracks in the material and surface qualities of Ra < 0.2 μm | 0.000008 in. can be achieved without difficulty. The integration of the newly developed ULTRASONIC HSK-actuator system allows the combination of ULTRASONIC hard machining and HSC-milling / milling on a single machine (depending on machine series on the basis of HSK 32E or HSK 63A-tool holders). This opens up an unrivaled spectrum of applications, – ranging from soft, hard through to advanced materials, which can be produced all on a single machine.

ULTRASONIC HSK 32-actuator system: A coil body is firmly mounted both on the HSK tool holder and on the spindle. Via induction, the ULTRASONIC frequency is transferred from the ULTRASONIC high-frequency spindle to the HSK tool holder, while the tool is rotating. A vibration is generated in the actuator which sets the rotating tool into an additional, oscillating motion in axial direction. |1| HSK 32-actuator system: ULTRASONIC 20 linear |2| HSK 63-actuator system: ULTRASONIC 50 / 70-5 / 100-5

ULTRASONIC 50: Entry into ULTRASONIC 3-axis machining made easy. The ULTRASONIC 50 is the first model in the ULTRASONIC series equipped with the HSK 63-actuator system. As a result, the ULTRASONIC 50 can be used both for ULTRASONIC hard machining (with max. tool Ø = 150 mm | 5.9 in.) and for conventional milling. In addition, and as an alternative to the manual swivel rotary table, an optional configuration is available with digital drives and hydraulic table clamping, which makes 5-sided machining possible. In combination with three CNC-controlled axes in X / Y / Z, these two positioning axes and the powerful, automatic 16x-tool changer open up the possibility for automated manufacturing. As an additional option, the ULTRASONIC 50 can be upgraded through an additional NC-integrated rotary axis in the form of an attachment table, as a positioning or rotary grinding table.

Application sectors – Tool and mould making / Electrode manufacturing. The demands for longer tool service life, increased productivity and better quality have made advanced materials in tool and mould making indispensable. Ceramic materials such as silicon nitride, silicon carbide, zirconium oxide and high-performance materials such as carbide, combined with increasingly complex workpiece geometries demand innovative, powerful machining methods. The ULTRASONIC series has led to more flexible production, allowing ULTRASONIC hard machining and HSC milling / milling on a single machine, resulting in excellent surface qualities, significant reduction of micro-cracks in the material, the reduction of machining steps, and the elimination of the cost-intensive and time-consuming electrode machining in mould making. Consequently, an unrivaled range spectrum of materials – ranging from soft, hard and all the way to advanced materials – can be efficiently machined.

Application sector – wearing parts made from ceramics for the textile / pump / fittings industry. Efficient production requires both productivity and precision: this being imperative for technological components in the textile and fittings industry which are extremely sophisticated. Components have to have a long service life, made exactly to specifications fit perfectly into the assembly and they partially must be chemically resistant. High performance ceramics, such as aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide and silicon carbide are ideally-suited for such high demands on service life and performance. In this sector, ULTRASONIC technology sets new standards for machining time, contour accuracy and surface quality, by offering the possibility of hard and complete machining for these materials.

Application sector – optical industry. There is a wide range of applications for ULTRASONIC technology in the optical sector. Typical applications found in this industry are highly precise laser rods for YAG-lasers, mirror mounts with thin walls made from zerodur or rod lenses made from glass / corundum / silicon for scanner systems and endoscopy, as well as classical optical lenses with concave or convex geometries. The ULTRASONIC series has already entered the sectors of projection and measuring optics, satellite construction, telescopic sight and guidance systems manufacturing, as well as other technological and scientific fields. Application sector – medical industry. Better equipment for better healthcare: cutting edge medical devices are the foundation of diagnostics and surgical medicine. The machining of advanced materials in the medical sector requires extreme precision and the attainment of pre-defined surface qualities. Advanced materials are not only found in magnetic resonance imaging, X-ray technology and the manufacturing of medical equipment, but also in implants and prosthetics for use directly in the human body. The low process forces during ULTRASONIC machining help ensure the openpourous quality needed for implants and prevent sub-surface damage to the material.

ULTRASONIC user interface: The clearly laid-out ULTRASONIC screen and the superior 15" TFT screen ensure excellent ease-of-use. Productivity increases at every stage: during setup, programming, operation and jobprocessing. The most advanced control technology in the Siemens 840D powerline supports you with its powerful processor capacity, short cycle times and fast reaction times.

|2|

ULTRASONIC process monitoring: Adaptive Control (ADC) displays the process forces on the machining tool in ft./lbs., Acoustic Control (ACC) registers the power output of the ULTRASONIC generator in mA. If the threshold levels entered into the CNC are approached or crossed for a pre-defined period of time, an automatic feed reduction in real-time takes place (the active principle can also be inverted). Consequently, the machining process is continuously monitored and a constant feed velocity is ensured, resulting in optimum workpiece quality. In addition, the utilisation of ADC and ACC avoids damage to the workpiece and simultaneously increases tool service life.
