Artificial intelligence, internet of things and big data demystified Mariette Awad Mariette Awad is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at AUB.

We live in an era of autonomic computing, an era which looks like science fiction with all the services technology offers us. But for the collected data to become useful knowledge a challenging process awaits data scientists, engineers and developers. If you have ever wondered about this process and more specifically: what is Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of things (IOT) and Big Data then this session is for you as it aims to demystify the latest research and limitations of these fields in a fun and interactive manner.

Her current research focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics and Internet of things. She has received 21 grants to support her research including two multidisciplinary multi-million dollar grants from the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and Intel. Her work culminated in a book Efficient Machine Learning in 2015 as well as more than 70 conference, book chapter, and journal publications. Awad has been an invited speaker and reviewer at a number of international conferences and journals. Prior to her academic position, she was with IBM System and Technology group in Vermont for six years as a wireless product engineer where her technical leadership and innovative spirit has earned her management recognition twice, two business awards, and 10 patents. He spent many years in Lebanon managing industrial and commercial enterprises and was President of the Lebanese Industrialists Association as well as director of the Schroder Asseily group, a joint venture with Schroders Plc, and a director of the Royal Bank of Canada, Middle East SAL. He is presently Chairman of Societe Fonciere pour la Construction SAL, Managing Director of GT Asseily & Co. SAL and a director of Cimenterie Nationale SAL, Domtex SAL and other industrial and commercial companies in Lebanon.

Silk was discovered in China according to history/legend by accident when a cocoon fell from a mulberry tree into the hot tea cup of the Emperor’s daughter. It became a very expensive item that was exchanged like gold, in the early Middle Ages, between warring states. Justinian the Byzantine Emperor sent two monks to China to find out how it was produced. They came back with the secret and slowly it spread to the whole Near East. Silk production became a main activity in Lebanon and started an economic as well as social revolution in the country with export of cocoons, then thread and the creation of many factories (175) some of which were French owned, that employed thousands of workers mainly female. In the early 1900’s it was estimated to be nearly 45% of GDP…That contributed to the creation of the first bank, and the Beirut port expansion.

In 1984 he co-founded the British Lebanese Association in London and the Centre for Lebanese Studies at Oxford, of which he is presently Chairman of the Board of Governors. This is an independent academic research institution that aims to promote international understanding of Lebanon and the issues facing it.

That lasted until the 1920’s when imports from China into Europe through the Suez Canal made it very difficult to compete and led to the closure of all silk factories in Lebanon.

In 2000, George and Alexandra Asseily renovated the old silk factory in Bsous and created a silk museum as well as the Association Memory and Development.

Number of sessions: one Date: Friday, May 6 Time: 5:30 – 7:00 pm Capacity: Unlimited (Open to members only)

The lecture will be coupled with a visit of the Silk Museum in Bsous. Details on page 30, “Cultural Travel Program” section.

On being an Arab woman today Joumana Haddad Joumana Haddad is a Lebanese poet, translator, journalist and women's rights activist. She is head of the cultural page for the prestigious "An Nahar" newspaper, as well as an instructor of creative writing and modern Arabic poetry at the Lebanese American University in Beirut. She has been selected as one of the world’s 100 most powerful Arab women for the two past years by CEO magazine Middle East, for her cultural and social activism. Haddad has published several books, in poetry and prose. Her works have been translated to many languages. Her most recent publications are the trilogy essays “I killed Scheherazade”, “Superman is an Arab” and “The Third Sex”. She has received numerous international prizes for her literary career as well as her human rights activism. Speaking seven languages, Haddad is a polyglot and has written books in different languages, and has also published several works of translation, including an anthology of 150 poets who committed suicide in the 20th century. She is also the founder of Jasad, a controversial Arabiclanguage magazine specialized in arts and literature of the body, which ran for two years (2010 and 2011), before being discontinued for financial reasons.

The Lebanese writer and journalist Joumana Haddad dared to put an end to one of the world’s most well-known Middle Eastern literary figures: Scheherazade. For Haddad, this centuries-old literary figure should no longer represent the reality and attitude of Arab women. In this talk/testimony, Haddad recalls the good, the bad and the ugly that have made her the woman she is today, despite the two-faceted hypocrisy that has become an integral element of Lebanese Arab culture, and all the challenges of being raised during the civil war in Lebanon. Also, Haddad raises questions about the prevalent notions of identity and womanhood in the Middle East, and speaks of her own development as a woman and writer, in an attempt to explore some common elements of what it means to be an Arab woman today.

6) Arts Images of older adults in art – This lecture will be delivered in Arabic Hind Al Soufi I was born Born in Lebanon in 1955 and attended French educated schooling and higher studies from La Sorbonne. I studied Economics (DEA) and Fine Arts, earned a PhD from Paris, and continued further studies and training in women studies and Gender Equality at Upsala/Sweden and the American University/USA. I am a researcher in the field of Art and Women issues, and I am an activist for peace working with youth through the arts in order to build citizenship and improve democratic values education among them. Among my most cherrished achievements:  The Al Fayhaa Choir known to be number one in Lebanon because of the international awards it got  The Youth Parliament  The youth Orchestra grouping 20 players

The lecture seeks to show how elderly are represented in paintings throughout the history of Art and what are the resemblances and the differences in the representations between the western and the local inherited art and what are the changes that occurred in the contemporary arts. My approach focuses on gender issues and on the discrimination in art representation between women and men. Many interesting characteristics would be highlighted as well as the specificity of each culture or of historical periods that will be reflected through the artworks.

Haiku, Japan’s short poems: an art form and a philosophy Omar Abdulaziz Hallaj Omar Abdulaziz Hallaj is a consultant on urban planning, development, heritage management and local governance. He is the co-founder of the Syria Initiative (part of the Common Space Initiative, Beirut) working to empower peace activists, mediation and dialogue. He was the CEO of the Syria Trust for Development, and served on the boards of several NGOs, and public commissions. His professional and research work relates institutional, financial and political frameworks to the production and preservation of built environment. In 2007, he was the recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture as team leader of the Shibam Urban Development Project (GIZ).

One of the most intriguing literary forms is the short poems known in Japan as “haiku”. Descendent of a millenary tradition of poetic realism and extreme abstraction combined in 17 syllable verses haiku is both an instantaneous revelation of nature and a deep reflection on the world. The genre started as a short verse to situate longer poems in time and space. Yet gradually it became independent of the longer poems and became a field of exploration in its own right. Poets went on long journeys in search of that perfect moment revealed to them in the midst of nature, or through interactions with the absurdities of life. As the language is open and the text is very short, haiku became an open field of interpretation, each allowing different readings and multiple interpretations. In that way the literary genre demonstrated great malleability to express highly philosophical notions of the eternal / instantaneous, being / nothingness, value / nonjudgment, nature / artificial, etc. The lecture will present a journey through time and space to visit some of the most famous Japanese men and women haiku poets and look at the artists that 9

The Art of war and the pleasure of the chase Hadi Maktabi Coming from a family with an old tradition of carpet dealing, Hadi graduated from AUB with a B.S. in Mathematics and then completed a Masters in Number Theory at Oxford. Having taken a year off, he rediscovered his original calling and his passion for Islamic art (and carpets) in London's galleries and museums. Hadi then read for a PhD in Islamic Art and Carpet Studies (still the only graduate to obtain the degree) at Christ Church, Oxford. He has done active research in leading museums and realized that every rug tells a different story: a story of a centuries-long migration from a woman's loom to a stranger's house in a foreign country. He currently teaches at AUB, and has recently set up his own dealership for Islamic art in Tabaris where he showcases carpets and textiles as rare artistic masterpieces.

Visiting a gallery to get to know art or an artist is one step towards the knowledge of Art and Artists. Our idea is to immerse you in the life of the artist; take Van Gogh for example, we will show you how and why he created “Les Iris” painting, the different techniques and media he utilized, his thoughts and feelings and his approach to nature and the use of colors. This is to better understand the “Les Iris” and Van Gogh. Then we can say that you are acquainted with art and the artist!

The question concerning the nature of philosophy has itself often been the subject of philosophical debate. The three lectures will consider this question from a historical perspective. The first lecture will consider the rise of philosophy in the ancient Greek world and how it gradually came to distinguish itself from other modes of thinking, primarily from myth. The second lecture will consider the crisis in which philosophy found itself with the rise of modern science in the early modern period. The third lecture will discuss later attempts by philosophers to find a room for their discipline in a world where science seems to have a monopoly on truth. Healing the Wounds of History: workshops Alexandra Asseily

Alexandra is a governor and founder of the Centre for Lebanese Studies at St. Antony’s College (Oxford University), a Trustee of the Guerrand-Hermès Foundation for Peace, a founding member of the Ara Pacis Initiative, a member of the Advisory Council for Religions and Spiritualties at the Fetzer Institute, a former member of the Advisory Board of the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University, and a practicing psychotherapist. As witness of the pain of the civil war in Lebanon (1975-1991), Alexandra decided to explore her own responsibility for war and peace and became a psychotherapist. In 1997, Alexandra had a life changing experience that inspired her to begin the Garden of Forgiveness (Hadiquat as Samah) in Beirut, a project to create a garden in the heart of the City to facilitate forgiveness. The work on the garden is currently suspended due to security conditions. Alexandra travels widely to speak and work with various nationalities and groups to help reduce conflict, and to take a greater responsibility for peace in the world by starting with ourselves. She is currently leading a series of training workshops in Lebanon on ‘Healing the Wounds of History: addressing the roots of violence’, which highlight the role of transgenerational trauma and forgiveness. She is married to George Asseily and lives between Beirut and London. She has five children and twelve grandchildren. In 2000 she and her husband developed The Silk Museum in Bsous, Lebanon, which is open to schools and the general public.

Following her lecture entitled ‘Healing the Wounds of History’, Alexandra will be leading three workshops on: 

What is my Responsibility for Peace in the World? Five Steps towards a Peace Process The purpose of the workshop is to encourage peace, harmony and understanding between peoples regardless of their ethnic origin or religion. It introduces five practical steps towards a ‘peace process’. It offers participants the opportunity to develop a greater awareness of our responsibility for peace in our own lives and how this personal responsibility can be applied to all areas around us. We can then witness the effect that this has for one and all. These steps can be used for all stages of conflict: prevention resolution and reconstruction.  Becoming a Good Ancestor Epigenetics – the new science which is now showing the effects of emotional memory on future generations – is the best possible reason for clearing up our emotional junk! Any old, or indeed new, grievance requires healing before it gets going into the future and to children and grandchildren, without us being even aware. This workshop will explain the background and give some new clues about accessing our hidden wounds and grievances, many of which we may have inherited ourselves. 

How to understand and resolve the complex relationship between internal and external dialogue This workshop will explore the relationship between our internal conversations and our external ones and the negative or positive effects that this can have. If we pressure ourselves internally with a bullying or punishing authoritarian ‘voice’ on the inside, we may set up a rebellious conflict within ourselves. This inner conflict can then affect our ability to be heard as an

integrated voice in our external dialogues. If on the other hand we have a more respectful and compassionate inner dialogue, we will be less likely to attack or attract attack from the outside. It is why it is important to correlate the two, internal and external ‘dialogue’, because when those verbal exchanges take place (whether in the silence of our heads or verbally with others) we often replicate language patterns, along with resentful feelings, which may have been inherited for generations. When those patterns are authoritarian, they can create more tensions, conflicts and violence within and without. Fortunately, when those patterns are understood and synchronized, we accept and can achieve a more collaborative, peaceful dialogue with ourselves and others. 1. The Attack by Yasmina Khadra: This is a timely and haunting novel that powerfully illuminates the devastating human costs of terrorism. Dr. Amin Jaafari is an Arab-Israeli surgeon at a hospital in Tel Aviv. As an admired and respected member of his community, he has carved a space for himself and his wife, Sihem, at the crossroads of two troubled societies. Jaafari’s world is abruptly shattered when Sihem is killed in a suicide bombing. As evidence mounts that Sihem could have been responsible for the catastrophic bombing, Jaafari begins a tortured search for answers. Faced with the ultimate betrayal, he must find a way to reconcile his cherished memories of his wife with the growing realization that she may have had another life, one that was entirely removed from the comfortable, modern existence that they shared. 2. Khayri, a Palestinian twenty-five-year-old, journeyed to Israel, with the goal of seeing the beloved old stone house, (with the lemon tree behind it), that he and his family had fled nineteen years earlier. To his surprise, when he found the house he was greeted by Dalia Ashkenazi Landau, a nineteen-year-old Israeli college student, whose family fled Europe for Israel following the Holocaust. On the stoop of their shared home, Dalia and Bashir began a rare friendship, forged in the aftermath of war and tested over the next thirty-five years in ways that neither could imagine on that summer day in 1967. Sandy Tolan brings the IsraeliPalestinian conflict down to its most human level, suggesting that even amid the bleakest political realities there exist stories of hope and reconciliation. Badre excavated several sites in Lebanon, Syria, Dubai (Jumeirah 1969 – 70) and Yemen (Shabwa 1979 – 83). She directed three excavations: Tell Kazel in Syria 1985 – 2010, The Ancient Tell of Beirut where she discovered Biruta of the Bronze Age 1993 – 96 and Tyre 2012 – 2015 where she discovered the first Phoenician Temple and the Phoenician city.

The history of Saint George Cathedral of the Greek Orthodox in Beirut, is well recorded in written documents and the material culture uncovered by the archaeological excavations. In 1995, Archbishop Elias Audeh, the Metropolitan of Beirut planed a restoration project of the cathedral, heavily damaged by the civil war. Prior to this restoration the AUB Museum team under the directorship of Dr. Leila Badre used this unique opportunity to conduct excavations underneath the cathedral in 1994 – 95. The two objectives for this project were to: (1) investigate the historical sequence and the continuous use of the location as a religious site; and (2) locate the Byzantine Anastasis Church, which was known to be near the Law School of Justinian.

Her major achievement in Museography: total Renovation of the AUB Museum in 2006 and the creation of a new Crypt Museum in St George Cathedral (2011), the first underground Museum in Lebanon.

The excavations uncovered remains of six superimposed churches from the Byzantine period to 1783 where the church layout was very much like the present one. Beit Beirut: Museum of Memory of the city of Beirut Mona El Hallak Ghaibeh A Lebanese architect and heritage preservation activist. She received her B. Arch from AUB in 1990 and her Master of Architecture from Syracuse University-Florence Program in 1994. She was an Associate at Rais and Jamal-Architects and Engineers until 2000 when she started her own practice and has many residential projects built and under construction in Beirut. She is a member of APSAD "Association pour le Protection des Sites et Anciennes Demeures au Liban", a founding member of “IRAB”, a nongovernmental organization working on the preservation of the musical heritage of the Arab world, and a founding member of “ZAKIRA”, a nongovernmental organization for promoting photography and its role in documenting and preserving Memory. She led several heritage preservation campaigns and succeeded in the preservation of many buildings and sites in Beirut. In 2013, she was given the “Ordre National du Merite au grade de Chevalier” from the President of the French Republic in recognition of her work and achievements in preserving cultural heritage.

We will tour the Barakat building that attracts every passerby with its war torn facades and imposing architectural presence. Built in 1924, it has an avant-garde architecture with an ingenious plan that opens it to the city and sky at once. It has an atmosphere of coexistence that has become almost a mythical prewar past. Under the rubble, I found the amazing archive of Dr. Negib Schemali that documents the life in Beirut before the war. The Barakat building commanded a strategic corner position along the Green line that cut Beirut in two throughout the civil war. It was transformed into an object of war and a real killing machine: snipers abused cleverly the architectural transparency and built their own architecture of fortifications inside. The bunkers are still intact and the walls are full of bullet holes and war graffiti. This building was set to destruction by its owners in 1997. I campaigned to stop the demolition and it took me 12 years of lobbying to convince the Municipality of Beirut to expropriate the building as the Museum of Memory of the City of Beirut: a civic city museum and urban cultural center that preserves the memory of the city before, during and after the civil war; a platform to raise awareness about the importance of preserving architectural and cultural heritage; a place to reunite the Lebanese around their collective memory and identity and start the reconciliation process to avoid future conflicts, 25 years after the "declared" end of the civil war. Healing the Wounds of History Alexandra Asseily

I will share the process of moving between the inspiration of a Garden of Forgiveness, to its potential realization in Central Beirut, between three cathedrals of different denominations and three mosques, between 1997 and today. I will include the Garden of Forgiveness’ central project, entitled “Healing the Wounds of History: addressing the Roots of Violence”. The theory is that the cycles of violence between generations are broken by forgiveness and compassion. In the Healing the Wounds of History project we train people to become aware and sensitive to the depth of their own and other’s memory and pain, which they may have experienced or unconsciously inherited. The release of this pain in traumatic memory, past or present, also releases the impulse to repeat the violence, inwardly or outwardly. Trainings have already been conducted since 2011 with hundreds of people of different ages, religions and ethnicities. Our intention is to train teachers, both Syrian and Lebanese, and to offer ‘tools’ to reduce tension and create positive change in the individual and the group.
