Parent Inter-district Magnet Choice Program The Two Rivers Guidance Department will help to facilitate your high school registration if you are attending from another district through parent choice. Section II: Hartford Academy Schools Through the Hartford Public Schools, available to most Hartford students (CHECK WITH SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVES )

Students would register for these programs through Hartford Public Schools. These were the programs that were available during the 2011-2011 school year and will be updated for the upcoming school year as information becomes available.

The following academies are located at Bulkeley High School: Teacher Preparatory Studies (Grades 11-12) The curriculum focuses on preparing students for careers in the field of education. Students develop their skills through community service learning and multiple teaching experiences. They also have the opportunity to earn college credits.

Humanities Studies (Grades 11-12)* This academy features integrated studies in History, Languages, Literature, Philosophy, and Religion. *Pending board Approval

The following academies are located at Hartford Public High School: HPHS: Freshman Academy (9) This academy provides students with a smaller setting for 9th grade students within the larger high school environments. Classes are structured in 90 minute blocks and allow students the opportunity to explore a variety of career pathways.

HPHS: Engineering & Green Technology Academy (10-12) This academy services students who are interested in a career in Engineering or related fields. The classes are designed with a focus on Math, Science, and English.

HPHS: Law & Government Academy (10-12) The mission of the Law and Government Academy is to provide students with an exposure to, a respect for, and a knowledge of the skills required of the people who defend and protect their community. To this end, the academy will prepare students using and inter-disciplinary curriculum of knowledge focusing on the skills needed to pursue careers that serve and protect the community.

HPHS: Nursing Academy (10-12) The curriculum at this academy is based on the concept of C.A.R.E., (Character, Accountability, Responsibility, and Excellence). Students will take courses in Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

The following academies are located at Weaver High School: Culinary Arts Academy (9-12): This academy is a college preparatory school that enables students to earn a ProStart certificate by meeting the standards maintained by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. The curriculum is aligned with both national and state standards to meet the criteria for college admissions.

Journalism and Media Academy (9-12): This academy is designed for students interested in the field of Journalism and other careers related to the media. Students will be exposed to the online/print and television production aspects of the field through their work with professionals that are currently employed in media.

Through mentorships, internships, and other field experiences, students will make connections between the classroom and the real world.

Administered by the Capital Region Education Council (CREC), its purpose is to improve academic achievement; reduce racial, ethnic and economic isolation; and provide a choice of educational programs for children. There are a limited number of openings each year and new participants are selected through a lottery process. Transportation is provided by CREC.

Students are able to explore areas in which they have expressed interest, aptitudes or career aspirations. Students in the program are enrolled in Glastonbury High School and take a comprehensive educational program with Agri-Science and technology as one of their elective subjects. Harris Agri-Science & Technology Center Bloomfield High School Regional Vocational Agriculture Center 5 Huckleberry Lane, Bloomfield, CT 06002 Contact: Jaunice Edwards Phone: 286-2636 Participating Districts: Bloomfield, Hartford, East Granby, Granby, Simsbury, West Hartford, Windsor The Harris Center has a curriculum specifically designed to offer students educational experiences not available in their home school district. For the first year of the program, students are exposed to integrated approaches to Agri-science with an emphasis on emerging technologies, and they participate in the River to the Sea Salmon Restoration Project. In subsequent years, course selections range from academic to honors level and include Animal Science, Botanical Science, Natural Resources, Aquaculture, Veterinary Technology and Environmental Science. Special projects include Exploring Diversity through Aquaculture, a four-week residency program, and research mentorships. Students identify and apply to competitive undergraduate programs that match their aptitudes, interests and goals. This is accomplished by designing a personalized learning plan for each student, providing real-world opportunities to connect students to their learning, and expecting them to find authentic, meaningful ways to show what they have learned. Classes are small and students help create their own curriculum, a personal one that reflects and expands their own interests and aspirations. Our model includes student attendance at an off-campus internship generated from each student’s area of study. Big Picture High School students also tackle college courses, and every

As both learning and social justice are lifelong pursuits, students will attend classes year-round. The Capital Preparatory Magnet School and Capital Community/Technical College are building a family education center to support intellectual enrichment for the entire family, from toddlers to adult learners. The Capital Preparatory Magnet School at Capital Community/Technical College is built upon the paradigm and success of the Connecticut Collegiate Awareness Program (ConnCAP), which has produced a 100% four-year college placement of low-income first generation students since its inception in 1998. Connecticut International Baccalaureate Academy (CIBA) 857 Forbes Street, East Hartford, CT 06118 Grade Level: 9-12 School Year: East Hartford School Calendar Adjacent to East Hartford High School, CIBA offers students an international alternative to conventional college preparatory curriculums. The academy is designed to meet the needs of self-directed students who have an interest in contributing significantly to international understanding. The rigorous curriculum includes core subjects in mathematics, the sciences and the humanities, and course offerings and learning expectations not commonly seen in public schools. The academy follows a program established by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), which is committed to establishing international standards of quality and excellence in education. Applications are available by contacting CIBA. Students must complete their application and submit it to Two Rivers Guidance Office. Once your application is complete and submitted to CIBA, applicants are then entered into a lottery for final placement.

CT River Academy for Earth & Science One Riverside Drive East Hartford, CT 06118 Grade Level: 9-12 Phone: 860-528-4111 The Connecticut River Academy is an early college high school on Goodwin College's new campus in East Hartford. Located beside the historic Connecticut River, the Academy’s environmental science focus includes river studies; land, water and air quality; plant and animal growth; human ecology; and renewable energy. Students in grades 9 through 12 work directly with Goodwin College students and faculty and are able to take credit-bearing college courses starting in grade 11. Internships are available with a wide range of corporations in the area, including advanced technology experiences created especially for Academy students by the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology. Learning at the Academy is project based and tied to real-world skills, including joint programs with many institutions throughout the area and across the state. Great Path Academy Manchester Community College P.O. The partnership between Great Path Academy and Manchester Community College offers unique educational opportunities

The mission of the academy is to provide a solid foundation in science, math and technology in an enriched environment. We offer a completely integrated inquiry based laboratory curriculum with state-of-the-art technology. The academy offers honors and Advanced Placement courses. Students attend the academy for half the day and their home district school for the other half of the day. In this environment, students are afforded an opportunity to be challenged to their own maximum potential and are provided access to educational resources at Trinity College, Hartford Hospital, the University of Connecticut and the Institute of Living. GHAMAS is a member of the National Consortium of Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology. The focused theme provides students exposure in the fields of medicine and education by offering opportunities for career shadowing and coaching from professionals in health care facilities or with certified teachers in the learning laboratory preschool located at the school as well as other PK-12 schools. Middle and high school students at the CREC Medical Professions and Teacher Preparation Academy master both the academic content and career-based skills for their chosen fields. Students have the opportunity to do field work through experiential learning, bringing their studies into the greater classroom- the world. Section VII: Private Schools The following is a sample listing of some of the Hartford area private schools that Two Rivers’ students have applied to in the past. These schools are not run by any districts, they are private, and charge tuition. Many however do offer scholarship

programs. Each individual school has separate admission requirements including but not limited to, taking a standardized test (SSAT), recommendations from your middle school, application and fee, possible campus visit and interview, as well as academic records from your current school. If you are considering application and possibly attending one of these schools, you are strongly urged to contact them directly about their individual admission process and criteria. Section IX: Entrance Testing Information Many of the religious schools and independent private schools will require an entrance exam. The Catholic schools will have their own entrance test taken at that particular high school. The Hebrew High School will have an admission test as well. The private schools will most

likely require the SSAT. Information regarding test dates and sites is available either through the individual high school admission office or can be accessed at SSAT.org. Entrance tests scores may also serve as criteria for financial aid/scholarship assistance. Please contact each individual school for that information. The entrance tests take place Fall of your 8th grade year and the dates are time sensitive. Be sure you are paying attention to the test dates. As Two Rivers receives information regarding open houses and test dates, it will be posted in the guidance office.
