What Is Easyread? Easyread is an online course for children with reading and spelling difficulties. It has been specifically developed for children who:  guess when reading  can read a word fine on one page but not the next  have atrocious spelling  have difficulty decoding  struggle with blending The Easyread System was established in the early 2000s by David Morgan. One of Morgan’s earliest memories was his mother despairing that he would never learn to read (he later went on to graduate with a Masters in Engineering). But it wasn’t until two decades later when his own two sons began to fall behind in literacy that he turned his creative efforts towards finding a solution. Through years of research and empirical testing in schools, the Easyread System was born. The online program uses innovative Guided Phonetic Reading techniques to transform struggling learners into confident readers.

 find it hard to remember the sounds in a word  can’t hear the inner sounds in a word  become distressed, angry or resistant when reading  lack fluency in reading  have dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, or ADD

How Does It Work?

The core of Guided Phonetic Reading is Trainertext. Trainertext is text presented with easily identifiable visual images above the words. Each image represents one of the phonetic sounds that make up each word. Using the Trainertext as a tool, the reader can decode any word, however irregular or unfamiliar it is. That means that the child can build up a subconscious mapping of all the grapheme-phoneme relationships used in English through exposure. It is an implicit teaching strategy, rather than the explicit rules of conventional phonics, which so often do not work and lead to confusion for the child. Here is an example of some Trainertext from the Easyread System:

These three words should rhyme based on how they are spelled, but of course they do not! Trainertext guides the child. The images change above the ‘a’ and the ‘s’ from word to word. Instead of the Ant in Pink Pants and the Snake with a Shake, you have the Octopus Who Knocked a Puss and the Zuto from Pluto. This simple little device is revolutionary for the struggling reader. It takes away the constant fear of facing words that cannot be decoded.

Is It Research-Based? The Open University ran an independent randomized control trial in 6 London schools with 100 children roughly 2 years behind their peers. The Easyread System group progressed in their reading age immediately, reaching the national standard within 9 months.

The control group started off at a slightly higher level than the Easyread group due to some children leaving the school. However, when the control group began the Easyread intervention, they caught up in a mere 6 months.

In the trial every child made significant progress once Easyread and some children gained over 3 years of reading age in less than a year.

The Easyread Lessons

Easyread exercises include games like Monkey Jungle Juggle, which work on developing phonemic awareness.

Each 15 minute daily lesson includes story reading to build up decoding skills, fluency, and vocabulary. Lesson difficulty increases over time until children are reading chapter books.

Games like Mushroom Picker make it nearly impossible for children to guess. Guessing decreases over time. After around 90 lessons children are reading much more confidently and ably.
