Avalon Velvet Bent

100% Avalon Velvet Bent

Velvet bents have unparalleled shoot density and fineness of leaf. They are environmentally friendly because they require low nutrient inputs. Avalon is very disease resistant and performs well on soil and sand greens.

Level Par Velvet Bent Blend

50% Avalon Velvet Bent 50% Vesper Velvet Bent

By combining the two market leading velvet bents we have created Level Par. Their attributes form a blend that provides superb greens that don’t cost the earth to maintain. 007 DSB offers superior turf quality, eliminates winter stress discolouration and is highly competitive against Poa Annua. 007 DSB has enhanced Dollar Spot resistance and offers vigorous, uniform growth.

Sowing Rate: 8-12g/m2

Overseeding Rate: 5-8g/m2

Creeping Bent Blends All three of our top rated creeping bents will complement each other well in a blend. The greens at the Medinah Country Club, the venue for the 2012 Ryder Cup, are a blend of 30% SR1119 and 70% 007 DSB and greens on the Lakes Course at the Olympic Club, host of the 2012 US Open, are a blend of 007 DSB/Tyee. The correct blend for your course will depend upon the array of factors that need to be considered such as budget, staff numbers, etc. Ask your technical sales representative for advice regarding a blend to suit you based upon your management requirements.

Sports & Amenity Product Guide| 05

Overseeding Golf Greens Golf Green Management can often be challenging - golfers want all year round play, fast greens and firm surfaces, however, weather conditions, traffic and disease outbreaks can make turf management very difficult. Therefore a practical management programme which includes overseeding when new grass species are introduced into the sward from seed is important for good turf management. Overseeding is ideal for introducing high performance grasses into the sward. The latest genetic improvements can be included which take advantage of advances in research and development. Following a practical management programme such as overseeding will help to maintain a diverse and balanced sward, reducing the invasion of unwanted weeds and grasses. OVERSEEDING AS PART OF A RENOVATION PROGRAMME Trials carried out by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) show that overseeding is an important part of any renovation programme in order to aid recovery after wear. The trials showed that unseeded areas failed to reach acceptable standards compared to those that were overseeded. There are many different ways to overseed. Strong results can be achieved by creating holes or spaces in the existing sward to give seedlings a chance to compete and to ensure that seed comes in contact with the root-zone. This can be carried out through verti-cutting, scarifying, hollow-coring or direct drilling. Specialist greens seeders such as the Vreedo and Pro-seeder should also be considered as they are accurate in putting the seed in contact with the soil at the proper sowing rates. Seed can also be applied to greens during regular coring work i.e. using Toro Pro-Core. When applying the seed ensure it is brushed into the core holes in the final top-dressing, making sure not to bury the seed too deep. Another good method for applying seed is scarifying after top-dressing has been carried out. The Graden scarifier produces excellent results for this method. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU OVERSEED YOUR GREENS Greens are the most important playing area on the golf course. With more traffic occurring here - bringing more diseases, drought stress and compaction - greens should be oversown at least every six to eight weeks during the growing season. This can be reduced when the percentage of desirable grass to sward has increased. It is important to note that annual meadow grass will seed daily between April and September and overseeding will reduce the invasion of these unwanted grasses. CHOOSING THE RIGHT VARIETIES FOR YOUR GREENS The most common choice for greenkeepers tends to be traditional fescue/bent combinations as they cover a wide range of greens construction such as inland sand based greens and links courses.

06 | Sports & Amenity Product Guide

Turfgrass Manager However, Pure Bent and Pure Fescue mixes are becoming very popular. Due to a growing environmental awareness and the R&A’s vision of sustainable golf the use of Red Fescue has increased significantly. Fine Fescues can offer tremendous advantages such as high shoot density, drought tolerance, low fertiliser inputs and slow growth patterns. However, they need free draining root zones and cannot endure close mowing (4mm). Although with their fine leafed nature close mowing is not a necessity.

Bents For well-established greens such as typical mature parkland courses modern bents are a good choice. In heavy soil type greens velvet bents have proved very successful. Velvet bents can survive on low fertiliser regimes and compete well with Poa Annua. Agrostis Tenuis (AberRoyal) also produces great results on typical parkland greens. It wears very well and can tolerate close mowing at heights such as 3mm.

Creeping Bent Grass On most new inland golf courses Creeping Bent grasses were introduced throughout the late 90s producing some excellent putting surfaces and proving very popular on USGA constructed greens. However, they require a higher fertiliser input compared to that of the more traditional bents. CONCLUSION The characteristics of a green will, to a large extent, dictate the success or failure of establishing new grasses. Poor drainage, low cutting height and heavy wear will not favour new grasses, therefore it is essential to recognise the need to improve conditions within a green if seeding is to be successful. Routine maintenance programmes such as vertidraining, scarifying, hollow-coring and top-dressing should be carried out as often as possible. When choosing new grasses it is important to understand the maintenance requirements of the grass and remember this is a long term investment that will result in both financial and environmental benefits.
