6 Superordinate Software Sub centers / central systems Core part of a traffic management system is the superordinate central software. It is used as complex center in order to control networks, as sub center for tunnel or corridor control systems or in smaller applications for data evaluation as well as for HGV parking applications. In especially developed control models and by means of specific algorithms, the software processes the data of different sensors detecting traffic and/or environmental data. The according switchings are then forwarded to the variable message signs. Tunnel control systems and special sequences use extensive control matrices. –With these even complex control tasks can be implemented. The automation of program sequences helps harmonizing traffic flows, reducing reaction times and improves traffic safety significantly. Additionally, applying the central software reduces the operating effort and ensures that traffic standards and laws are observed. Central software systems are either planned in a completely project-specific way or, on customer request, implemented according to V-model (the official project management methodology of the German government, directly relevant to software development). In any case it is the objective to develop a customfit, turn-key solution for each requirement and problem. To do so, the technical and traffic technological challenges are considered as well as the user-specific peculiarities. ®,

Besides the product line PRIMOS our “Professional Interurban Motorway System“, SWARCO is engaged to push the development of the “open-source“ software of the NERZ (i.e. user of the standardized central software for traffic centers) in different projects. Here, a simplified and mostly automated handling / monitoring with minimized manual effort is intended. Further technological objectives are: • improved traffic control by incorporating switching recommendations of different control algorithms, including new ones • implementation and testing of algorithms for managing HGV traffic • efficient variable evaluation possibilities supporting continuously required control optimizations and maintenance services of the switching programs • as well as the support of operating surveillance of system parts (especially sensor technology) and the reduction of administration efforts.

RWIS Systems Road weather information systems provide the basis for an optimized winter road service adapted to the current weather conditions. In parts, the winter road service without RWIS support is only possible on large scale, whereas the RWIS support allows a winter road service which is optimally adapted to the current weather situation, time and location. Here, measurement stations detect a multitude of values such as road surface temperature, residual salt, precipitation. The collected data are automatically forwarded to the German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst). There, the data is linked to the general weather data and then processed. The data is combined with weather data from the German National Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst) and evaluated to provide reliable local information for. In the RWIS computer center those measurement values, data and weather information are combined. The thus gathered information about the weather and road conditions is evaluated and visualized in a graphical user interface, differentiated for time and place. This is used to provide reliable road weather forecasts several times a day.

7 Dynamic evaluation and display of parking spaces for HGV According to the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure goods traffic is expected to increase by another 34% until 2020, which will largely take place on the federal motorway network. Together with long-distance goods transports grows the demand for an intelligent management of heavy goods vehicles (HGV) on motorways and at service stations at motorways. In the period of 2015 to 2020 another 8,000 spaces will therefore be necessary. In addition to the already existing 28,500 parking spaces at motorway service stations and just under 19,000 spaces at off-motorway rest areas, approx. 10,0000 new spaces for heavy goods vehicles were already installed. But there is still a deficit of nearly 14,000 regular parking spaces. (Source: Strassenverkehrstechnik, 7/2015)

Accident statistics show that this often has fatal consequences. A significant number of accidents on motorways are caused by overtired truck drivers and accidents at service stations due to blocked access roads increase. Existing parking space for HGV must be managed in such way that it can be efficiently utilized. At the same time, the drivers must be able to plan their compulsory breaks and to find parking space without tedious searching. Creating, controlling and displaying HGV parking space is an investment in the safety of all road users. With competitive concepts, SWARCO TRAFFIC SYSTEMS makes its contribution to implement the future technology of HGV management. In order to successfully develop new and advanced products and concepts, extensive test series are conducted in close cooperation with the Business Unit Detection – the SWARCO competence center for detection technology and its team of developers with longtime experience based on the Weiss-Electronic know-how.

In the course of the project, the signposts of the junction Aschheim / Ismaning were dismantled and newly installed at the relocated position. The display points of the corridor control system were adapted to the changed requirements. Thus, in cooperation with the traffic management center, also the release sequences for the hard shoulder running system had to be adapted accordingly. Additionally, the video points had to be adjusted to the new locations and visibility conditions.

Traffic management and hard shoulder running motorway A9 Holledau – Neufahrn (1st & 2nd stage)

Project summary In the area between the interchanges Holledau and Neufahrn in driving direction Munich the existing corridor control installation was renewed and extended. In direction Nuremberg a new corridor control system was installed. The information is displayed by means of display cross-sections with VMS in LED-technology, installed at sign gantries made of spun concrete or mounted at poles beside the road. The traffic data acquisition is mainly done via overhead detectors mounted at the sign gantries.

Gotthard Tunnel Motorway A2: Increased efficiency “EffiGo” incl. Integration into the BLE* and new operating concept

The tunnel is controlled both by Airolo (Ticino) and Goeschenen (Uri) with responsibilities alternating every two weeks. The northern ramp is so far exclusively operated by Goeschenen, the southern one exclusively by Airolo. In the course of several system extensions such as the so-called Release 2 in 2008, the traffic control was already prepared to be integrated into the operational control level (BLE TINWUR) of the cantons Ticino (TI), Nidwalden (NW) and Uri (UR). All computers in the area XI were thus already integrated into the BLE.

The region around the city of Cologne has one of the highest traffic loads of Germany. The overhead noise protection Loevenich now provides an intelligent and efficient solution for the traffic management system on the ring road around Cologne (Koelner Ring). Started in 2007, the two kilometer stretch on the motorway A1 in the west of the city was extended to six lanes. In order to protect the urban districts close to the

motorway A1, the specific section of the motorway was enclosed by an overhead noise protection barrier. The tunnel-like construction across the motorway is made of reinforced concrete walls beside the motorway and in the medial strip, which are covered by an arched glass structure. Project Conception With approx. 30 accidents caused by deer, the federal road B202 near Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein is a well-known accident black spot. Goals are to reduce the number of accidents caused by wild animals and, at the same time, to preserve a north-south passing-strip where the wild animals can cross. To do so, two safety fences of four kilometers length were installed to

At these spots, detection areas at the side of the road were established to detect the animals when they approach. They consist of six sensors each at both sides of the road. Once animals are detected, warning signs placed in sufficient distance beside the road start blinking and show the warning “deer pass” and a speed reduction of 70 km/h (50 km/h). The road user has enough time to slow down and to avoid the collision, if

Because of the night driving ban for heavy goods vehicles in Switzerland while not having enough space when the motorway is congested, there are regularly HGV congestions on the motorway A5 Karlsruhe – Basel in front of the customs site Weil am Rhein during the night and early in the morning. company premises with a minimum number of cameras and to monitor all sensible and strategic focus points. From the center the cameras are parameterized and controlled. They go independently on userdefined “patrols” by panning to the learned areas and zooming into the sensible areas such as entrances, oil tanks etc.. In order to maintain a night visibility of up to 500 m, an accordingly far reaching infrared beam (infrared canon with variable focus) moves with the camera. Furthermore, the reliable and centralized control and live streaming (real time) of the cameras must be guaranteed over great distances.
