October has been a busy month for TCDS! I understand we had a good October evening meeting with Gale Allison on Estate Planning. Unfortunately I was under the weather all week and unable to attend the event. Our all day meeting with Gordon Christensen at the Renaissance Hotel is next Friday the 22nd. In addition to an excellent, entertaining program, it is also a great chance to get together with friends and colleagues from all around the region and state. The following Thursday is the New Dentist Party at Ben and Eugenia Johnson’s home. Thanks, Johnson’s for hosting this event! I am already getting excited for the TCDS Holiday party on Thursday December 2nd at the Silo Center in West Tulsa. It is a great venue and we have booked Tulsa’s own Randa Warren to entertain us through a wine tasting and dinner. Randa is one of only 16 female Master Sommeliers in the World. I had the pleasure of attending one of her events last year and had a great time. She is incredibly informative and entertaining. Check out her website at http://www.randawarren.com.

Tulsa De ntal Alliance Video Library Project The Tulsa County Alliance Group is working on a dental health project for TCDS and Rhonda. The Alliance is building up a dental education and video library for Rhonda to have for anyone who might be interested in checking these items out such as teachers, hygienists, or even parents. We are asking for any donations of educational materials and videos that you might be able to spare. I was looking out the window and saw a young girl fall off of a pumpkin wagon in front of our office. I brought her into the office, dusted her off and offered her a job. I bought Linda her first pair of shoes. She worked for a year to pay for those shoes and only started taking a salary after one of my hygienist told her she could also get paid. Even though I yearn for the original pay arrangement, Linda Wilkerson has been the heart and soul of our office. The day she retires is the day I retire. Have you noticed, if your office is anything like mine, many of our top employees come from the surrounding little towns: Jami (20 years) and Linda (30 years) from Bixby,

Shawna (6 years) and Stacey (8 years) from Broken Arrow, Cheryle (4 years) from Inola, Andrea (2 years) from Kiefer and Vallrie (9 years) from Sand Springs. Of course, our Tulsa staff members: Cindy (28 years), Becky (20 years), Kellie (9 years), Brandel (new), Janet (8 years) and Rachel (6 years) are all special. Now you may ask, why would Hunter tell the entire dental community about how great a staff he has and even mention their names and where they live? Well do any of you remember a young dentist named Brown or something like that….well they never found his body. He shouldn’t have talked to one of my valued employees. Always in all ways, Nick

OUCOD Externship Program The Senior Externship courses, (I & II) are designed to provide extramural training for the 4th year dental students. The students have a summer and spring semester externship assignment that are two-weeks in length, and is required for graduation. While the clinical training received on this assignment is important, the focus of the rotation is to provide an opportunity for the student to define his/her career choices, i.e. provide practice, specialty, community health, or academia. Preceptor dentists must be in state and actually have to go through an application process and be accepted and approved by the College of Dentistry and the State Board of Dental Examiners. The dentist must have current valid dental license in good standing. There is an OU Health Science Center application form that we use for a dentist interested in applying to become a Preceptor for the Senior Externship Program as an adjunct faculty member. By becoming an adjunct faculty member this allows the dental students to work in a facility outside of the dental school. The student works under the dental license of the adjunct faculty dentist only with direct supervision. If you are interested in learning more about the program then please contact: Kay S. Dentists can participate in the operative clinic on the first, third, and fourth, Friday mornings of each month or in the extraction clinic on Tuesday evenings. In Me moriam LARRY BREWER – A great loss to dentistry and humanity I remember, only too well, the tedious tasks of dental lab work required for graduation from dental school and how excited I was to have the option of “sending it out” to the dental lab after going into practice. A lot is written about new products and equipment - - about advances in techniques etc. However, I can’t recall ever seeing much written about the “lab man”. What a deal!! He spends hours of tedium performing the time enduring, stressful procedures required for the crown, prosthesis or casting that we dentists take total credit for (unless there’s a problem) and at a fraction of the cost. It’s actually a privilege to deal with these people. I can think of several I’ve known and worked with over the past 50 years. Some were exceptional and one of these rare individuals was in the form of Larry Brewer. Larry was always more than fair - would go above and beyond the extra mile but more than that was absolutely and unequivocally one of the nicest people I have ever met. To enumerate his deeds both in dentistry and life would be too lengthy but all who knew him would attest to it. Those beautiful partials which always fit to perfection and that winning smile will be sorely missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to have known him!!!
