Mark Reeves, Matthew Gillespie to Assume Position of Assistant Executive Director With the recent retirement of Mr. Bob Baldridge, and the pending full-retirement of Mr. Gene Beck, Mark Reeves of Springfield was recently hired as a new Assistant Executive Director. At the March Board of Control meeting, Matthew Gillespie of Murfreesboro was named to the same position. Mark Reeves, 34, comes to TSSAA from East Robertson High School in Cross Plains, where he has been assistant principal for the past two years. He also served in that same role at Springfield High School from 2004-2006. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1997 and his Master’s in Education from Trevecca Nazarene University in 2001. He participated in football, wrestling, baseball, and tennis in high school and in soccer at the club level. Mr. Reeves was the head wrestling MARK REEVES coach at Springfield High School for nine years and the assistant football coach for four years. He also worked with the cross-country and track programs. As an administrator, Mark has served as host and tournament director for numerous district and regional tournaments and meets. Mark will be responsible for the sports of football, wrestling, track & field, and soccer. He will also be responsible for the administration of TSSAA rules and regulations on a daily basis. Mark lives in Springfield with his wife Jill and their two sons, Garrett (3) and Connor (1). Matthew Gillespie, 31, will assume the role of Assistant Executive Director in January of 2009. Matthew has been on staff at the TSSAA since 1999. He is a native of Murfreesboro and received his bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1998. Matthew first started work with the state office as an intern from May through December of 1998. Since joining the staff full-time, Matthew has been responsible for media relations, MATTHEW GILLESPIE state records, the TSSAA News,

administration of TSSAA rules and regulations, and the administration of the sport of bowling. He will now assume the duties of all printing, assistance with the football playoffs, and will represent the TSSAA with the Tennessee State Legislature, Tennessee State Board of Education, State Department of Education, and other organizations. Matthew lives in Murfreesboro with his wife Mary Elizabeth and their two children, Holt (3) and Cari Beth (1). NFHS Coaches Association Award Program TSSAA is proud to announce that four coaches from Tennessee were selected Section 3 Coach of the Year in their perspective sports by the National Federation of High School Coaches Association for the 200607 school year. Section 3 includes eight Southeastern states (Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee) and finalists were submitted to the NFHS for consideration as National Coach of the Year. Those coaches selected as Section 3 recipients from Tennessee are the following: Boys’ Track & Field – Mary Sparn, Brainerd High School Girls’ Volleyball – Paul Brock, Girls Preparatory School Girls’ Cross Country – Dickie Adkins, Marshall Co. High School Girls’ Golf – Mike Driver, Farragut High School It is also an honor for TSSAA to announce that Mike Driver of Farragut High School was selected as NFHS National Coach of the Year in Girls’ Golf for the 2006-07 school year. The following criteria was used to select the National Coach of the Year: career coaching record, community service, involvement in school activities, involvement in the individual’s profession at the local, state, and national levels, and the individual’s basic philosophy of athletics. Congratulations to all of our state, sectional, and national honorees. This is a tremendous accomplishment and each recipient is very deserving of these accolades. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE RECOGNITION

ADMINISTRATOR – BARBARA DAUSH TSSAA is proud to recognize Barbara Daush as its distinguished service honoree as an administrator. Barbara graduated from Wooddale High School in Memphis. After graduating from high school, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Latin and Classical Studies, from the University of Mississippi in 1974. She then went on to the University of Memphis where she received her Master of Arts in Teaching in 1977 and her Master of Education in 1981. She began her career as a Latin and history teacher at Lausanne School in Memphis in 1975 and remained there until 1978. From Lausanne, she went to Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School where she served as a Latin teacher, guidance counselor, and administrator until 1990. From June 1990 until May 1994 she served as Head of the Lower School at Hutchison School. While at Hutchison she provided administrative and education leadership to grades three, four, and five. In June 1994 she began her career with St. Agnes - St. Dominic School as President/CEO where, among other responsibilities, she is directly accountable to the Board of Trustees, is in charge of executing resolutions, policies, rules and regulations adopted by the Trustees, appoints all administrative staff and faculty members for both schools, supervises the academic program, and maintains the college counseling process. Barbara served as an ex officio member of the TSSAA Board of Control and Legislative Council from August 1997 through May 2006 and she currently is a member of the Accreditation Committee for the Southern Association of Independent Schools, the Board of the St. Martin de Porres Shrine and Institute, the National Association of Independent Schools, and the National Catholic Education Association. She is also certified to chair accreditation teams for the Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Barbara and Michael Daush have been married for 28 years and have two sons, Bobby and John. Bobby is employed with CB Richard Ellis and John is a senior at Christian Brothers University. In her spare time, Barbara enjoys sports, jogging, singing, playing the guitar, and boating. She also serves as Eucharistic minister at St. Louis Church. TSSAA is proud to recognize Barbara Daush for her work, dedication, and the many contributions she has made to students through her work as an administrator.

COACH – SUSAN CROWNOVER TSSAA is proud to recognize Susan Crownover as its distinguished service honoree as a coach. Susan is a graduate of Ringgold High School. While at Ringgold, she was an All-State basketball and softball player. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. After high school, Susan received a four year basketball scholarship and attended the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga. In 1990, Susan was hired to teach and coach at Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga. She began her career as the middle school girls’ basketball and assistant varsity softball coach. In 1992, she became the assistant varsity girls’ basketball coach. She was named the head varsity softball coach in 1994 and continues to serve in this capacity. With Susan as their coach, Girls Preparatory School has won six softball regional championships, four state championships, and has been state runners-up on four occasions. She has been named Tennessee State Coach of the Year twice and Chattanooga Times Free Press Coach of the Year three times. Susan became the varsity head girls’ basketball coach in 2004. As the head coach, she has guided her team to three Division II State Championship games finishing second in 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2006-07. Susan and her husband, David, have been married for seventeen years. They are the proud parents of two children – Matthew (14) and Kelly (12). TSSAA proudly salutes Susan Crownover for her contributions to student-athletes in Tennessee.

OFFICIAL – SUSAN WILLIAMSON TSSAA is proud to recognize Susan Williamson as its distinguished service honoree as an official. Susan has remarkable knowledge and has made significant accomplishments and contributions to the sport of soccer as a referee. She started playing soccer in 1978 with the Knoxville Women’s Soccer League. She played for two years, then moved to the Men’s League for five years. She was first certified as a referee in USSF in 1980 and was an inaugural member of the Tennessee Valley Soccer Referee Association in Knoxville. She began officiating soccer at the high school level in 1980 before it was sanctioned by TSSAA. Susan became a USSF State 2 Referee Grade 6 in 1989 and a USSF State 1 Grade 5 in 1990. She officiated as an AR in the USA Soccer All-Stars vs. Linfield Football Club game in 1991 at Neyland Stadium, and was the first woman to ever officiate the Irish side and made the game deciding decision. She was certified as a USSF Referee Assessor in 1996 and became a certified USSF State Assessor grade 6 in 2000. Susan still schedules adult and high school matches and has raised a son who is a USSF State Referee Grade 6 as well. TSSAA is proud to recognize Susan Williamson for her work, dedication, and many contributions she has made as an official.

CONTRIBUTOR – DENNIS RAINIER TSSAA is proud to recognize Dennis Rainier as its distinguished service honoree as a contributor. Dennis received his B. S. Degree in Elementary Education from Middle Tennessee State University in 1970 and earned a Med Degree in HPERS with a minor in Administration and Supervision in 1972 from Middle Tennessee State University. In 1990-91 Dennis was enrolled in the Executive Development School for Parks and Recreation Professionals from the University of Georgia. Dennis was the Assistant Parks and Recreation Director in Murfreesboro, Tennessee from July 1971October 1980. In November 1980, Dennis became the Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Director where he serves in this same position today. Dennis is a member of the Tennessee Parks and Recreation Association, the National Recreation and Parks Association and is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional. Dennis is married to Nancy, who is a Media Specialist at John Pittard Elementary School in Murfreesboro. Dennis has a son, Brad, one stepdaughter, Heather and one step-son, Ryan and a granddaughter, Madison Rainier. Dennis Rainer has been involved and working with TSSAA for many, many years including football championships, basketball state tournaments, cheerleading championships and the Spring Fling. Dennis played a vital role in bringing the TSSAA Spring Fling to Murfreesboro for the past two years with the newly addition soccer complex that houses 16 fields along with a championship stadium. He spends many countless hours organizing workers, volunteers, facilities and maintenance crews in Murfreesboro for the Spring Fling every year. TSSAA is proud to salute Dennis Rainier for all of his many years of dedication, contributions and hard work to high school sports in Murfreesboro and Tennessee.

T

his year, I had the great pleasure of receiving a Christmas gift from my wife that was purchased from one of the most unique companies you will ever find, Colonel Littleton. Colonel Littleton is a very special man who lives in Lynnville, Tennessee and runs this business, which is just a little above the norm. In the gift, you stumble on “the Code of the West,” which reads as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Live each day with courage. Take pride in your work. Always finish what you start. Do what has to be done. Be tough, but fair. When you make a promise, keep it. Ride for the brand. Talk less and say more. Remember that some things aren’t for sale. Know where to draw the line.

I am not sure of the origin of the “Code of the West,” but I think we would all agree that the 10 items listed apply today to about everything all of us do. The principles are good for running a school, a business, or maybe even an athletic team. I have thanked Colonel Littleton over the years for many an item. I will take the opportunity this time to thank both my wife for the Christmas gift and Colonel Littleton for the special gift of the “Code of the West. The Real Challenge for Athletic Administrators In a recent article entitled, “Keeping High School Relevant in a Changing America,” Kathleen DeBoer,

Executive Director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, writes the following: Futurist Alvin Toffler said, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who can’t read and write, but those that can’t learn, unlearn and relearn.” A rendition paraphrased for athletics management could read, “The administrative failures of the 21st century will not be those who can’t hire and fire, but those who can’t train, nurture, and retain coaches.” These are indeed challenging times for all of us in the school business. I have never known a more challenging time for athletic administrators at the secondary level, whether they be principals or athletic directors, than the times we live in. A number of years ago I came into contact with a number of coaches from a particular school and they were talking about their athletic director. The universal statement, to a person, was that the beauty of coaching at this particular school was that you never had to worry about dealing with emotional parents about everything from playing time to… The unwritten rule at that school was that you had to go through the athletic director first about the matter before you can talk to the coaches. What Kathleen is stating in the opening paragraph of her article is bigger than this, but I can tell you that this is one of the components. There have to be a few unwritten rules and maybe a few written ones that set some parameters. Kathleen is right. The challenge for all of us in athletic administration will not be whether we can “fire and hire” but whether we can “train, nurture, and retain.”

HALL OF CHAMPIONS EXHIBIT

The first-ever TSSAA Hall of Champions exhibit was unveiled in March at the TSSAA State Basketball Championships. It was set up on the concourse at MTSU during both the girlsʼ and boysʼ t ournaments. The exhibit consists of DVD players, interactive trivia contests, and Hall of Fame and Championship team touch screen kiosks.

There were 20 different graphic panels on display covering past state champions, former outstanding TSSAA athletes, Hall of Fame, and more. The purpose of the Hall of Champions is to tell the history of high school athletics in Tennessee, and also to honor our current outstanding teams and athletes. The exhibit was then on display in April at the annual Athletic Directors Conference, held at the Franklin Cool Springs Marriott. A couple of new panels were put on display for the conference that included photos and information on past Athletic Directors conferences. The next destination for the exhibit will be in May at the TSSAA BlueCross Spring Fling. We hope to set the exhibit up in the Kennon Hall of Fame building on the campus of MTSU. Hall of Champions Benefit Basketball Games We had another successful season of Hall of Champions basketball games. We have on record that 170 schools hosted games, and approximately $152,000 was raised. We would like to thank all of the schools that participated, as it will help us to continue to grow the Hall of Champions. We encourage those schools that did not participate in 2007 to do so in 2008. You may choose any two dates between Tuesday, November 18 and Saturday, November 22. There is no limit to the number of games you play, but you must only choose two dates. Upon completion of your game, a percentage of the gross gate will then be sent to the TSSAA Hall of Champions fund. If you would like to host a Hall of Champions game(s), then please send your request on school letterhead to the TSSAA. At the completion of your contest you will send in the appropriate financial form from the TSSAA website, along with your receipts.

I was invited to work Vegas as a sub for Mac King at the Harris Hotel around Christmas and things went really well. I do not want to work Vegas all the time but it was nice finding out that I could. I was also invited to work the White House. It was cold and I was sick but my wife had a great time and that is what was important, at least that is what she told me. Anyway, here is a great test to give any of your students before school lets out. They will only need to answer 40% to pass. . . that’s right, a measly 40%. Have a great summer. TMSAA Meeting Minutes February 13, 2008

on April 22nd. The conference was held at the Cool Springs Marriott in Franklin, TN. The topics that were discussed were as follows:

The Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association held its second meeting of the school year on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at the TSSAA office in Hermitage. Committee members present were Chic Nute, Vic King, Katie O’Brien, Tommy Shelton and Ken Hilliard. Members welcomed Ken Hilliard, Athletic Director at Unicoi County Middle School and Tommy Shelton, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Charlotte Middle School, to the TMSAA Committee. Ken replaces Tony Spears who has taken over several major responsibilities at Science Hill High School. Ken has been very active with the middle school athletic programs in East Tennessee and his knowledge will definitely be a plus. Tommy is a veteran administrator at Charlotte Middle School and has agreed to replace Michael Carter, who resigned as Athletic Director at Cheatham Middle School. Tommy has always been involved in the organization and directing of post season tournaments in the Middle Tennessee area. The committee was presented with the current membership list for approval. Fifteen schools applied for first time membership into the association. This brings the current membership to 308 member schools. Committee members decided on the topics to be discussed with our Athletic Directors during the TMSAA Forum at the Athletic Directors’ Conference

A request was submitted by Wartburg Central Middle School to move from Area 2 to Area 4 in East Tennessee. The rationale given by the administration was economic viability and travel for their students. Committee members looked at the alignment of all schools across the state knowing there were other schools in the Association in a similar situation. It was also expressed that member schools set their own regular season schedule and are not required to play anyone. They may play member and non-member schools that are in close proximity to them. After studying the total picture and striving to do what was best for all member schools, the committee denied the request. The committee discussed the number of invitational basketball tournaments in which our member schools are participating. This will be monitored very closely. If a limit needs to be set, the committee will add this to the TMSAA Sports Calendar.

The A.F. Bridges Awards Program announced in the winter issue of the TSSAA News the 27 Divisional Finalists for 2006-07. Also, the nine schools that won the A.F. Bridges’ State Award of Excellence were recognized. For the fifth consecutive year, the TSSAA Board of Control earmarked $27,000 toward a scholarship fund to recognize one outstanding student athlete from each of the 27 schools that were Divisional Finalist for the A.F. Bridges Awards. Each school was asked to recognize a person who represents the essence of good sportsmanship and citizenship. The criteria for this nomination was set by each individual school. Each nominee was asked to provide a complete resume as well as a paper describing what participation in activities has meant to them. Additionally, we asked for input as to their perception of their role and responsibilities as a student leader. Each student will be awarded the $1,000 scholarship once they have enrolled in college. We are very proud to announce the 27 A.F. Bridges Scholar Athletes.

EAST TENNESSEE - CLASS A BRIAN BALL, Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences He has a 4.0 GPA and was selected as one of 30 winners of the Tennessee Honors Program as a junior. He is a member of the Paideia Society and has been involved in Model United Nations, Technology Student Association, and the Student Government Association. Brian has volunteered more than 100 hours to community service. He is a member of the basketball team and has been named the district tournament MVP as well as to the all-tournament team at the state tournament.

AMANDA SOARD, Midway High School She will graduate with honors from Midway High School and has received dual credit at Roane State. She is a member of the Bible Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Family Career and Community Leaders of America, Prom Committee, Business Professionals of America, and Beta Club. Amanda is a member of the basketball team at Midway.

NICK LEDFORD, Rockwood High School He will graduate with honors from Rockwood High School and has been a member of the Beta Club for two years. Nick has volunteered for Operation Reach for four years, helping kids in need shop for Christmas gifts for their families. Nick has been a member of the varsity basketball team for four years and was cocaptain for one year.

EAST TENNESSEE - CLASS AA CANDACE HOLLOWAY, Bledsoe County High School She is the Salutatorian of the 2008 graduating class at Bledsoe County. She has been Class Secretary and Class Vice-President. She is a member of the Beta Club and Beta Epsilon and was named the football homecoming queen as a junior and senior. Candace has been a trainer and coach for the Special Olympics since she was a sophomore. She is a member of the varsity basketball and softball teams.

MORGAN MOREFIELD, Johnson County High School She has a 3.75 grade point average and was named to the Servant Leader Experience Honors Program. She has received an academic scholarship and plans to attend Milligan College. Morgan has been a member of the varsity softball team for four years at Johnson County High School.

PAYGE BARNETT, Unicoi County High School She will receive her diploma this year from Unicoi County and has interests in accounting, nursing, and engineering. Payge has participated in track for two years and has been a member of the basketball for four years.

EAST TENNESSEE - CLASS AAA JOSHUA CARICO, Heritage High School He has a cumulative GPA of 4.30 and is ranked third in a class of more than 350.He is a member of FCA, Political Action Club, and a four-year representative of the Student Council. He is also a two-year representative of NHS. Joshua has received academic letters in Social Studies, Math, and Science. His community service includes tutoring students, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Angel Tree among others. He has been a member of the varsity baseball team for four years.

CLARK McMILLAN, Knoxville Central High School He has a 3.1 GPA and is a member of FCA, Pep Club, the CHS Choir, and Young Life. He has been involved with outreach service projects at his church and works as a peer tutor for special needs students. Clark has participated in baseball, track, and football. He was named the Region 3-4A Offensive Player of the Year in 2007.

CALEB CLEMENT, Maryville High School He has a 3.9 GPA and has been a member of the Drama Club for three years. His community service includes Mission Mondays, Lost Sheep Ministries, World Changers, and Vacation Bible School Volunteer. Caleb has been a member of the varsity baseball and football teams for four years. He has been named to the All-County football team and the All-District baseball team.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE - CLASS A CHRISTIE SANDERS, Huntland High School She has a 4.0 grade point average and is a member of Interact, FCA, National Honors Society, Beta Club, and 4-H Honor Club. She is the Senior Class Treasurer and has been the Valedictorian of her class each year in high school. Community Service includes working with Golden Christmas Luncheon, Operation Noel, Food Drive, and participated in a Hurricane Katrina Relief Trip among others. Christie is involved in soccer, cheerleading, and gymnastics.

RYAN ROSS, McEwen High School He has a 3.85 GPA and is ranked fourth out of 68 students in his graduating class. He is a member of the Beta Club, Leo Club, Future Teachers of America, History Club, Spanish Club, and FFA. He has been a Student Council Representative each year in school and was class Vice-President as a junior. Ryan’s community service includes the St. Vincent de Paul Society and has coached Junior League basketball and Powder Puff football. He has participated in basketball, football, and baseball and was named to the All-District basketball team as a junior.

DARWIN HOUSTON, Mt. Pleasant High School He has a 3.3 grade point average and is ranked 14th in his class. He has been a member of the Academic Decathlon and the Drama Club. Darwin has been a member of the basketball and football teams at Mt. Pleasant. He was named to the All-District team in basketball as a junior and was the team captain his senior season.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE - CLASS AA ASHLEY ETHREDGE, Creek Wood High School She has a 3.5 grade point average. She works with small children and is involved with Junior Pro Basketball. Academic interests include Health Science Education, Child Development, and Emergency Medical Services. Ashley has been a member of the basketball team at Creek Wood High School for four years.

DAKOTA CREWS, Lewis County High School He has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Beta Club, Science Club, Intramural Club, HOSA, and FCA. He was Vice-President of the junior class and recipient of numerous academic awards. His community involvement includes Operation Christmas Child, Special Olympics, and church youth groups. Dakota is a member of the football team at Lewis County and was named the winner of the Tennessee Titans Class 2A Mr. Football Lineman award. He was also named to the All-State teams as a junior and senior.

LOGAN DOOLEY, Loretto High School She has a 3.6 GPA and is a member of FCA and French Club. Her community service includes Vacation Bible School, Community Family Fun Day, and donating clothes to the Samaratin House. Logan has been a member of the volleyball and basketball teams at Loretto. She was named to the All-District volleyball team as a senior.

Volunteer experience includes Habitat for Humanity and Grace Works Ministries Food Pantry. Nolan has been a member of the football and baseball teams for four years and was a member of the basketball team as a freshman. He was named to the All-Region and All-County teams in football.

SARA TARPLEY, Hendersonville High School She has a 4.0 grade point average and is the Student Body President at Hendersonville. She is a member of the National Honors Society, Beta Club, FBLA, FCA, and DECA. Community Service includes Relay for Life, Vacation Bible School, Servant Saturday, Toy Store, and Nursery Volunteer. Sara has been a member of the golf, tennis, and basketball teams at Hendersonville.

JESSICA HOAGLIN, Riverdale High School She is a member of the Latin Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, DECA, and Delta Beta Sigma. She was a participant at the regional, state, and national levels with DECA and placed first at the State Competition in 2007. Jessica has been a member of the tennis and soccer teams at Riverdale and was named to the All-District second team in both 2006 and 2007 in soccer.

WEST TENNESSEE - CLASS A TYLER VERDELL, Gleason High School He is the current Class President at Gleason and has been a class officer each year in high school. He is a member of FFA, FCA, Beta Club, and Science Club. He was the recipient of the D.A.R. Good Citizens Award as a senior and was an American Legion Boys’ State Delegate as a junior. Volunteer experience includes Weakley County Youth Leadership Service Project, tutoring elementary students, and talent show fundraiser for LeBonheur among others. Tyler is a member of the football team and was named to the All-Region team twice.

DEMETRIUS PIERCE, Lake County High School He is the President of the senior class at Lake County High School. He is also President of the Beta Club and Student Council. He is a member of Top Ten and Upward Bound. As a junior he was a State Delegate and the recipient of the Falcon Award. This year he was named “Mr. LCHS.” Demetrius has been a member of the basketball team since he was a sophomore.

MICHAEL DeVORE, Middleton High School He has a 3.02 grade point average and is a member of FFA and HOSA. He has been a member of the football and tennis teams at Middleton High School. In football, he was named to the All-Region 8A team for defense.

WEST TENNESSEE - CLASS AA SPENCER BERRY, Camden Central High School He will graduate in May from Camden Central. Spencer participated in football and was team captain as a senior. He was named to the All-Region team in 2006 and 2007. He was named the Region's Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 as well.

MOLLY BEECHAM, Lexington High School She is the President of the Student Council at Lexington High School. She is a member of FCCLA, Drama Club, Renaissance Team, and is secretary of D.A.R.E. As a junior, she was a Volunteer Girls State Delegate. Molly has been a member of the volleyball, softball, and tennis teams at Lexington as well as a member of the cheerleading squad.

DAVID VAUGHN, Milan High School He is the Senior Class President and is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, French Club, and the Honors Program. He was elected to be a Boys’ State Delegate as a junior. Community involvement includes volunteering to work basketball and soccer camps at school and the local YMCA. David has been a member of the basketball team for four years and was named to the All-Academic and All-District teams. He has also been a member of the soccer team and was named to the All-District team.

WEST TENNESSEE - CLASS AAA ARACELI LUNA, Arlington High School She has a cumulative GPA of 4.41 and is ranked 11th out of 398 in her graduating class. She has been a member of Key Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, and Beta Club. Community Service includes Food Drives, Walk for a Cure, St. Jude Marathon, and National Spanish Honor Society peer tutoring. She has participated in soccer, basketball, track and field, and cross country at Arlington. She has been named to the All-State teams in track and cross country.

WHIT SEATON, Hardin County High School He is a member of FBLS, Just Say No, English Honorarium, Science Honorarium, and Student Council. Community involvement includes church mission trips, Thanksgiving meals for prisoners and shut-ins with his church, and helping to buy and distribute Christmas gifts for underprivileged children. Whit has participated in tennis and football at Hardin County and was named to the All-Region second team in football as a senior.

CLEAVON MATTHEWS, Raleigh Egypt High School He is a member of Future Business Leaders of America at Raleigh Egypt and finished first place in the Sports Management Marketing Competition. He is the President of Anointed Outreach Ministries Youth Choir. Cleavon has been a member of the baseball and golf teams and is captain of both.

LOOSEBALL! This article is a “Looseball” collection of notes taken during this past school year. This represents some highlights that made an impression and are presented from only one perspective. This is how “Looseball” started in the April 1989 issue of TSSAA News. During my third year with TSSAA, I simply started jotting down thoughts that came to mind and so I continue… I can’t believe that I am starting my 22nd year with TSSAA… I appreciate Mr. Carl Matherly, former principal at Sullivan South and TSSAA Board of Control President, and the Board for hiring me in November 1985… As a young professional, you work hard learning what to say and when to keep your mouth shut… To have an opportunity to watch young people participate in athletics is a pleasure… Once a coach, you never lose the thrill of competition… I am thankful that my Dad, Coach Boyce Smith, and Mr. Jimmy Suter got me involved in athletics… You know every action does have a consequence… Not sure that the fax, cell phone, email, blackberry, laptop mentality is good for us… I enjoyed coaching 17 years at my alma mata, Springfield… Wish I had visited every school. Lacked eight until we started building more… I am very thankful that my wife, Norma, enjoyed sports as much as I did… Can you imagine what high school would be like if the privilege to participate was not available?... We better preserve the opportunity… Very thankful for the chance to meet so many nice people in the educational, athletic business… With replay, officials don’t have to do their best. They know the replay will bail them out. We do not need this concept in high school… You know most coaches don’t win their last game… I really appreciate that most officials accepted an old coach working with them on rules… I don’t really understand the statement that my team wasn’t ready to play. Just give me your best each game! Sometimes the other team is better… The role of high school athletics is not to prepare athletes for college scholarships. Most of our athletes just want to participate… Celebrating the basketball centennial with Coach John McLendon – priceless… We must remember our athletic history and those that paved the way for us. We must work very hard to preserve this opportunity for those to come… The new Hall of Champions exhibit that was unveiled at the basketball tournament is an excellent idea to record our history. Be sure and check it out… The TSSAA staff has been great to work with, very professional and hard working… My daughter Julie still loves sports and my six year old granddaughter Jordan hasn’t missed a state tournament yet… Entirely too much time, money, energy, and resources involved in TSSAA vs. BA… If you don’t teach fundamentals and sportsmanship, why should they call you coach?... The question must be answered, how do we recruit good young people to coach and officiate?... My son Taylor and his wife Betsy have their 10 month old Lucy watching sports too!... Enjoy your time involved in athletics. It goes by too quickly… Mr. A. F. Bridges, Mr. Gill Gideon, and Mr. Ronnie Carter have led us well… If in doubt, go with your best blocker and best runner… School people need to take care of school business… My time with TSSAA has been a joy. To have the opportunity to be involved in athletics and not have to win is unbelievable… This 20th edition of “Looseball” will be the last edition. It’s time to put the loose balls on the rack… Thanks “T”… I can’t believe this is my 23rd year with TSSAA

MR AND MISS BASKETBALL Winners and finalists of the 2008 Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards were honored at the conclusion of each classification’s championship game. A statewide committee of sportswriters selected winners based on performance during the 2008-2009 regular season. Academics and character were also taken into consideration. High school head basketball coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists. The presentation of the Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards for Division II, Class A were on Friday, February 29 at Allen Arena on the campus of Lipscomb University. The Division II, Class AA awards were presented at Allen Arena on Saturday, March 1. The presentation of the Miss Basketball Awards for Division I, Classes A, AA, and AAA were given during each championship awards ceremony for each class on Saturday, March 8 at the Murphy Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. CLASS A ABBY ANDREWS - Collinwood High School 5’10”, senior, forward. She is a four-year starter for the Trojans who averages 14.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 3.0 steals per game. She shoots 52.9% from the field, 35% from three-point range, and 73% from the free-throw line. This season has been named the District 12-A MVP. She has been named to the District 12-A regular season and all-tournament teams four times. Abby was named to the all-tournament team at the state tournament last season as well. She is ranked third in her class academically at Collinwood. MJ BROWN - Union City High School 6’0”, senior, guard. He is a four-year starter for the Golden Tornadoes who averages 20 points, four rebounds, seven assists, and four steals per game. He shoots 52% from the field, 41% from three-point range, and 70% from the free-throw line. He has been named to the All-District team four times and the All-Region team three times. MJ was a member of the 2006 All-State tournament team. He is an honor roll student at Union City High School.

CLASS AA LASHAY DAVIS - Upperman High School 5’7”, junior, guard. She is a three-year starter at Upperman who averages 18.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. She shoots 51.4% from the field, 37.2% from three-point range, and 70.3% from the free-throw line. She has been named the District 7-AA MVP in 2007 and 2008 and was named the Region 4-AA MVP in 2007. She was an All-Midstate and All-State selection in 2007. LaShay has scored over 1,600 points in her career at Upperman. She has a 3.5 GPA. JOHN JENKINS - Station Camp High School 6’4”, junior, guard. He is a two-year starter for the Bisons who averages 30.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. He shoots 56% from the field, 48% from three-point range, and 82% from the free-throw line. He is a two-time District 8-AA MVP and has been named to the All-District team three times. John has scored over 1,900 points in his three years at Station Camp High School.

CLASS AAA JASMINE HASSELL - Wilson Central High School 6’2”, junior, center. She is a three-year starter for the Wildcats who averages 21.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. She shoots 64% from the field and 58% from the free-throw line. She has been an All-District and AllRegion selection each year since she was a freshman. She was a member of the all-tournament team at the state tournament in 2006. Jasmine has already scored over 1,700 points in her career at Wilson Central. TERRICO WHITE - Craigmont High School Senior starter for the Chiefs who averages 27.1 points per game. He led his team in points, field goal percentage, three-pointers, free-throw percentage, and steals. This season he was named the District 14-AAA regular season and tournament MVP. He was also named to the Region All-tournament team. He was named the Most Outstanding Player for his team’s bracket at the Cick-Fil-A Classic in Columbus, South Carolina after scoring 81 points in three games. Terrico is a two-time Best of the Preps finalist.

DIVISION II - A LAUREN AVANT - Lausanne Collegiate School 5’10”, sophomore, point guard. She is a three-year starter for the Lynx who averages 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 4.0 steals per game. She shoots 45% from the field, 35% from three-point range, and 65% from free-throw line. Lauren was an AllRegion selection and was named the Division II West region Player of the Year. She was also an All-Metro selection this season. Lauren was a finalist for the 2007 Division II Miss Basketball Award. She is an Honor Student at Lausanne with a GPA over 4.0. ELLIOT WILLIAMS - St. George’s Independent School 6’4”, senior, guard. He is a four-year starter for the Gryphons who averages 21.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. He shoots 65% from the field, 40% from three-point range, and 75% from the free-throw line. He has been a Memphis Best of the Preps selection for three consecutive years and was named to the Division II All-State team in 2006. Elliot was a finalist for the Mr. Basketball Award in 2007 and has been named to this year’s McDonald’s All-American team. He is an honor student at St. George’s.

DIVISION II - AA GLORY JOHNSON - Webb School of Knoxville 6’2”, senior, forward/post. She is a three-year starter for the Spartans who averages 19.1 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and 2.5 steals per game. She shoots 66% from the field and 62% from the free-throw line. She was named the Division II Mid-East Region Player of the Year and the MVP of the Mid-East Region tournament. She holds the record for most points and rebounds in school history. Glory is one of 24 players selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game on March 26. She was the winner of the 2007 Division II Miss Basketball Award and is a three-time All-State selection. She was named MVP of the 2007 Division II state tournament and was named the 2007 Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year. LESLIE McDONALD - Briarcrest Christian School 6’4”, junior, forward/guard. He is a three-year starter for the Saints who averages 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game. He shoots 56% from the field, 33% from three-point range, and 76% from the free-throw line. This season he has been named the Player of Year for the Division II West region and was named to the region All-Tournament team. Leslie was a finalist for the Division II Mr. Basketball Award in 2007. He is a finalist for Gatorade Player of the Year this season and last season as well.
