TRUE COLOURS HISTORIC COLOUR SCHEMES for MOLE HILL

True Colours and Mole Hill During one hundred years of building maintenance, Vancouver’s early homes have received many coats of paint. In 1999, Vancouver Heritage Foundation partnered with Benjamin Moore to examine heritage houses throughout Vancouver to create a historical paint palette. Homes including those now part of the Mole Hill Community Housing Society, were scraped by heritage consultant Donald Luxton, and original paint layers were analyzed by Benjamin Moore. The results were formulated into a palette that is allowing Vancouver homes to be repainted in their original colours. The identification of the Mole Hill colours, such as Comox Green, Bute Taupe and Pendrell Verdigris, came as a result of VHF’s participation in the restoration of Mole Hill. Initially slated for demolition by the City of Vancouver who were buying West End properties with plans for higher density social housing, West End and Mole Hill residents rallied to save the neighbourhood, and strong community support resulted in the creation of a vibrant restored neighbourhood of original heritage homes. A few privately owned residences still dot Mole Hill, but the majority of houses are owned by the City of Vancouver and managed by the Mole Hill Community Housing Society providing affordable housing in Vancouver’s West End. Mole Hill is a wonderful, preserved square block of Vancouver history, and illustrates the value of retaining heritage architecture to maintain vibrant communities. This guide identifies the houses by address, and the last page provides a paint colour guide to each home’s historical paint scheme. We encourage you to take a stroll around Mole Hill. Since 2000, Vancouver’s heritage homes and neighbourhoods have been restored to historic paint schemes that compliment and illuminate the craftsmanship and details found on early Vancouver architecture. We continue to work with Benjamin Moore to support heritage building owners with True Colours Paint Grants to assist with the exterior maintenance of heritage structures. Visit our website for more grant information, and visit a Benjamin Moore retailer for a copy of the Historical True Colours for Western Canada brochure with the 35 paint colour swatches.
