Training session from aro “Around the world in 18 exercises” SoccerCoachingInternational’s new feature ‘Training session from around the World’ started last issue with 6 exercises from various Dutch Professional clubs. This issue we took it a couple of steps further: Around the world in 18 exercises, originating from 12 clubs in 6 countries on 3 continents. Below you will find an overview of the clubs featured:

Organization: - Players jog around the field - At a given point the coach will call out 4 names - All the other players must, as fast as they can, gather around the players whose names have been called by the coach to form 4 groups of 5 - The 3 players who are too slow (grey) and are left without a ‘group’ will be punished (i.e. 10 pushups, 10 situps, sprint, etc.)

und the World Rondo 6 versus 2 (Arsenal) Type: Warming up Number of players: 8 Target: Increase handling speed

Organization: - 6v2 - The groups of 6 players try to pass the ball around keeping it away from the 2 defenders - Once the ball is touched by a defender, he will change places with the player who last touched the ball

Variation: - Max. 1 touch - Max. 2 touches

Backwards line-throw (Union Deportiva Lanzarote)

Type: Warming up Number of players: 2 rows of 10 players

Organization: - Players line up in 2 row of 10 players each - Each row has a ball - Purpose of the exercise is to get the ball as fast as possible from the first player in line to the last - The ball should be thrown backwards above the head (with hands) - The last player runs quickly to the start of the line, the first team to reach this point wins - The other team will get a punishment (i.e. 10 pushups, 10 situps, sprint, etc.)

Jogging zigzag (Carabobo FC) Type: Warming up Number of players: all divided into 3 groups

Organization: - All groups begin at the starting point with a 15 second interval - They first jog around the field once - When they get back to the starting point they enter the field at cone 1 and start a zigzag course (made up of 13 cones) - Players jog from cone 1 to cone 2, then sprint from cone 2 to cone 3, jog again from cone 3 to cone 4 and sprint again from cone 4 to cone 5, etc. - The zigzag course ends at cone 13

Heading and hurdle course (1. FC Köln)

Type: Heading and conditioning Number of players: 4 2

- 4 players, 3 at each of the 3 cones and 1 active player - The active player first receives a ball from the player at cone 1 and heads it back to him - He then turns around and jumps over the 3 hurdles - He then receives a ball from the player at cone 2 and heads it back to him - He jumps back over the 3 hurdles and runs around the disc towards the last hurdle - While he jumps over the hurdle while simultaneously heading the last ball thrown by the player at cone 3 1

- 8v8 with goalkeepers - Fast combination play - All members of the team must be across the middle line before the team can score

Variation: - Including a neutral player on the attacking team - Including a neutral player on the defending team - Maximum 2 touches

2 attackers versus 2 defenders (Universidad de las Palmas CF) Type: Attacking Number of players: 4 and 1 goalkeeper Field size: Half a field Focus: attack versus defense

Organization: - 2 attackers versus 2 defenders - The attackers start at the middle line - By means of passing and dribbling they make their way down the field towards the penalty area - In the penalty area they are pressured by two defenders - The attackers must, by means of a combination, try to finish on goal without the defenders winning the ball

11 versus 11 on full field (FC Barcelona) Type: Match

Focus: passing and receiving (possession)

Organization: - The teams can only score from a cross from the flanks - A goal scored by means of a header = 2 points - All other goals = 1 point

- 4 players are positioned at cone A and 4 at cone B - Player 1 at cone A passes to player 2 at cone B - Immediately after player 1 passes the ball he zigzags around the poles, to and around cone C to cone D - Player 2 receives the pass and dribbles from cone B to cone E - At cone E he passes to incoming player 1 - Player 1 finishes on goal

Goalkeeper conditioning (Chivas Guadalajara) Type: Goalkeeping Number of players: 3 Field size: In and around the penalty area Focus: Saving and conditioning

- 2 cones are positioned approx. 6 meters in front of goal - 2 players are positioned at each side of the penalty area, just outside the box - The goalkeeper has to run to and around the cone and back to his starting position - He then receives a pass from the player who is located on the side of the cone, he saves the pass and throws it back to the player - The goalkeeper then moves to the other side of the goal and repeat the same thing on that side

- Goalkeeper start zigzag at cone 1, where he receives a dropkick pas from the coach - Goalkeeper throws the ball back to the coach and runs diagonally to cone 2, where he receives a dropkick pass from the coach - He continues to cone 3, 4 and 5 in the same format

- 2 cones are positioned approx. 2 meters apart with a rope tied between them - Goalkeeper is positioned one 1 side of the rope, jumps across - At this time the coach throws the ball to the opposite side of the rope - The goalkeeper dives across to save

- 5 cones are positioned in a line across approx. 5 meters - Goalkeeper starts next to cone 1 - Coach rolls the ball diagonally, goalkeeper dives between cone 1 and 2 to save - Same format all the way down the line of cone (difficulty increases as the goalkeeper gets closer to the coach)
