Transportation and Public Works Dept Traffic Services Division 1
Purpose of Project Improve traffic signal and other transportation management systems to:
Improve traffic flow
Reduce traffic accidents
Better manage the roadway system, and
Improve air quality/fuel consumption 2
Background
National Traffic Signal Report Card
Self assessment has been conducted in 2005 and 2007. 2007 City of Fort Worth Grade: D A measure of our staff resources to manage the signal system.
This project will directly improve these factors:
Assessment Sections Management Signal Operation in Individual Intersections Signal Operations in Coordinated Systems Signal Timing Practice Detection Systems
Improvement Package
Maintenance
We have a lot of room for improvement!

Background
What is ITS?
(Intelligent Transportation Systems)
Technology in the transportation system
Focus is on real-time operations Strategies include: z
Minimizing traffic congestion
z
Improving safety Fewer accidents + less frustration =
less congestion z

1) Traffic Signal System
Install Communications to 300+ Addn. Traffic Signals Today: 160 intersections are connected to the system (most are in downtown) Today: nearly 25% of outlying intersections are coordinated.
Then staff can: Synchronize
clocks for
coordination Monitor
signal operation
Detect traffic flow
React
to events and change timing Receive automatic malfunction alerts
9
2) Install 30 Traffic Cameras Then staff can: Monitor
incidents
Observe traffic flow
Evaluate responses
Observe timing changes
Conduct traffic studies
View RR crossing activity
Improve Video Sharing: • TxDOT • EOC • MAC Ch 27 • 911 Center • Others

Manage the Roadway System
Incident Management
Intent is to: Detect -- Verify -- Coordinate Response
13
Manage the Roadway System
Immediate Real-Time Response
Traffic is forced to seek alternate routes on city streets
