Track record Buildings and Infrastructure
“ When we build let us think that we build forever.” John Ruskin
We can help today’s buildings become the iconic landmarks of the future... Cities and civilisations are recognised by their landmark buildings - India and the Taj Mahal, New York and the Chrysler Building, London and St Paul’s Cathedral. Admired, even revered by millions of people down the centuries and across the globe, these structures have become more than the sum of their parts. Every part of the construction process plays a vital role. And none more so than a building’s protective and decorative coatings, whether it’s the paint on the gleaming facades or the coating on the steel beams. Choosing the right paint system is vital, and it’s something we at AkzoNobel can take care of for you. AkzoNobel has built its worldwide reputation on supplying construction projects across the globe with their paint requirements - whatever their needs, whatever their size, whatever their location. This is not an idle boast, it’s a fact. Whether structural steel or aluminium extrusions, curtain walls or interior walls, external masonry or timber cladding, stadium seating or retail fittings, decorative finishes or striking fascias - we’ve got it covered. And, because we have people in over 80 countries spread through all continents, we can, and do, supply paints and coatings anywhere in the world. For each construction project, we can draw on the technical expertise of our specialist business units. A lot of knowledge, one simple source.

Creativity We have technical experts and we have color experts. Together, we can make sure your construction project is outstanding in both looks and performance. You want brilliance, gloss, sparkle, or maybe you want subtlety, mood, intrigue? We’ve got it. We not only ensure matching colors across different materials but across different continents, so your brand image is both strong and consistent. And, if you want something a little different, we have the skills to create bespoke products and colors. Durability Our paint systems are designed to withstand even the most rigorous environments whether that means coping with water, heat, sunlight, dust, fire, impacts, chemical corrosion or mechanical wear and tear. We even have paints to repel dirty finger prints and withstand heavy scratches. We can be tough in all the right ways to guarantee long-lasting protection. Sustainability We don’t only care about our own environmental impact; we care about that of our customers too. So we have adopted a strategy of radical efficiency which involves us working with customers and suppliers to open up infinite possibilities in a finite world. It’s our commitment to finding opportunities where there don’t appear to be any. From our choice of raw material suppliers to the longevity of our products, we’re striving to pass on the benefits to deliver more value from fewer resources. Our research and development is firmly focused on exploring ways to develop more sustainable products, be that in their manufacture, their application, their capabilities or their lifecycle. This includes powder coatings that can be cured at lower temperatures and liquid paints that release fewer solvents, as well as coatings that need little or no maintenance or can reflect heat. Just a few of the things we have developed to help reduce our, and your, carbon footprint.

Bellagio Hotel Las Vegas, USA
“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” Winston Churchill
To stand out in a city that is already filled with the striking, the outré and the spectacular, is quite a feat. But Bellagio rises above the other hotels in Las Vegas by virtue of its sheer elegance and grand, Italianate, classical proportions, albeit on a vast scale: one thousand fountains, 3,993 guest rooms, indoor gardens, indoor villas, three Michelin-starred restaurants.
For its opening in 1998, AkzoNobel supplied the high-performance architectural coating, Trinar, for the building’s aluminium extrusions, including the window surrounds. One of our range of Industrial Coatings, it was selected for its ability to withstand the strong sunlight and heat of a Nevada climate as well as for its non-fade properties and high chemical resistance.
All of which are critical to reducing maintenance costs. The coating is part of a ground-breaking, more sustainable range designed with less organic solvent and hazardous air pollutants than comparable spray coatings.

Aviva Stadium Dublin, Ireland
“ Architecture is a visual art, and the buildings speak for themselves.” Julia Morgan
The redevelopment of the world’s oldest international rugby venue and today home to both Ireland’s rugby and soccer international teams was never going to be easy. Expectations would be high, critics numerous, and it would need to hold its place on the highly competitive, global, sporting stage. Plus, the new design had to cope with all the challenges of building in a city residential area. But the Aviva Stadium, in Dublin, Ireland, has made a virtue
of those constraints, with its swooping roofline, wraparound structure and transparent cladding. Despite its size, the construction doesn’t overpower its neighbourhood and is gloriously light-filled and light-reflecting. As well as advising on paints for interior spaces, we designed the protective coating for the 5,000 tonnes of structural steel in the roof and lower tier. The chosen system not only offers durability, impact
resistance and anti-corrosive protection but also a heightened gloss finish guaranteed to give a life four times longer than conventional products. With the reduced need for maintenance, and thus the reduction of solvent emissions, this has helped the stadium reduce its environmental impact and achieve the sustainability targets for the project.

Le Lagon Tignes, France Apart from the striking tepee-shaped entrance - a nod to the surrounding mountain peaks - the aqua and leisure complex of Le Lagon, in the French Alpine ski resort of Tignes, has a remarkably unobtrusive profile, blending into the landscape through judicious use of local stone and timber cladding together with

sweeping walls of glass. At 2,000 metres, its high-altitude setting, however, created particular conundrums for the architects to solve. Foundations are up to 16 metres deep while the structure has to cope with internal-external temperature differences of up to 50°C.
The use of powder coating on the aluminium extrusions not only ensures good weather resistance and durability, reducing the need for regular maintenance, but also its solvent-free status helps reduce the overall environmental impact of the building on the natural landscape.

The New Acropolis Museum Athens, Greece
The Acropolis Athens, Greece
Sitting on the lower slopes of the Acropolis beneath the Parthenon, in the historic heart of Athens, this museum’s strong clean lines and geometric shape are a 21st-century interpretation of the classical proportions of Ancient Greece. Everything about the building, opened in 2009, is reduced to simplicity, both in materials and color palette - glass, concrete, marble - allowing attention to focus on the museum’s contents. Galleries are sober, airy spaces, with double-height ceilings, vast concrete
pillars and natural light filtered through light wells while the top-floor Parthenon Gallery, a rectangular glass ‘box’ surrounding a courtyard, parallels the orientation of the original Temple of Parthenon. Powder coatings, known for their intrinsic environmentally sound credentials - no solvents, no harmful substances, low waste, low energy consumption - have been used on doors and skylight over the Parthenon Gallery. The same high-sustainable
qualities led to AkzoNobel’s powder coatings being specified for the Elithis Tower, in Dijon, France, a ten-story office block and one of the first energy-efficient buildings. All construction materials were chosen according to their environmental impact. As a result the building generates around one-sixth of the greenhouse gasses produced by most office buildings.

New York Times Building New York, USA The 52-story, Renzo Piano-designed building, rising 319 metres to the top of the mast and housing the headquarters of the New York Times newspapers, was the first skyscraper to be built in New York after 9/11. Opening in 2007, it was designed to be energy-efficient as well as a striking landmark. The curtain walls of white Angkor Wat, Angkor, Cambodia
ceramic sunscreen rods and low-e glass maximise natural daylight and block direct sunlight - reducing cooling loads - and reflect the changing city colors. With its extensive use of glass, the overall feel is of lightness and elegance with the curtain wall tapering above the roof in a graceful lace-like crown.
To protect the office block and add to its environmental credentials, the steel frame of the cruciform-shaped building, was coated with an epoxy-based fire protective paint system. This not only offers protection against cellulosic fires but high durability against mechanical corrosion thus reducing the need for maintenance.

The Sage Gateshead, UK With its billowing glass and steel curves, the Norman Foster-designed Sage Gateshead concert hall hovers like a giant spaceship above the River Tyne. Opened in 2004, its generous use of glass gives it a striking presence, whether reflecting the river and city in the day or glowing with light at night. A particularly strong feature is the curved roof of stainless steel panels - over 3,000 The Temple of Heaven Beijing, China
- which spans, and draws together, the three separate concert halls. For acoustic reasons, the halls are self-contained ‘boxes’, neither touching each other or the roof. In the main concert hall, AkzoNobel’s solvent-free powder coatings have been used on the seat frames while Protective Coatings supplied the paint systems for
the structural steel. As well as fulfilling a demanding anti-corrosive and environmental-protection brief, it was important that the color and gloss levels of the steel exactly matched those of the cladding.

The State Historical Museum Moscow, Russia
“The most important thing an artist can do, is confront society with something it has never seen before.” Arata Isozaki
With an impressive address of No 1 Red Square, the Russian State Historical Museum in Moscow is in the tradition of grand museums, showcasing the country’s history from pre-historic times to present day with almost 4.5 million objects. Opened in 1894, it’s a magnificent confection of towers, turrets and domes, paying homage to some of Russia’s grandest
churches. The intricately decorated interiors, in Russian Revival style, were covered up during the Soviet period but have been painstakingly restored. Paints from AkzoNobel’s Decorative Business were used in the restoration process. Today, these are some of the world’s most sustainable decorative paint systems with up to 30% less embodied
carbon than standard paints, and negligible Volatile Organic Compound emissions (which contribute to low-level ozone and smog). Innovative technology means our decorative paints also have some of the industry’s highest levels of durability and superior gloss finishes.

Anti-corrosion, fire protection and decoration of structural steel
Our architectural powder coatings are designed for all areas of the construction industry. We have products for simple windows and doors, through to amazing façades, ceilings, verandas, fencing, railings, balustrades and internal partitioning. Many of today’s buildings require sustainable solutions. So we also supply coatings for solar panels, sun shades/brise soleil, blinds and shutters. And our comprehensive anti-corrosion systems, which feature a compatible rust-prevention primer, allow our attractive finishes to flourish for many years on steel. Resicoat powders protect rebar, pipes and valves.
Wood coatings beautify anything made from wood and used in construction, from structural elements to decorative façades. Manufacturers of wood products rely on AkzoNobel’s market-leading wood adhesives and board resins as the bonding agents in engineered wood and laminates. These products are used to make furniture, cabinetry, flooring and constructive wood components like I-beams and window frames. Architects rely on engineered wood because it is more dimensionally stable and uniform than solid wood. Engineered wood products actually offer manufacturers a stronger, more durable substrate than traditional wood, thanks in part to our Casco Adhesive systems that provide innovative permanent bonding solutions for all types of engineered wood. We also supply the finishes to protect office furniture, cabinetry and flooring used inside the building.
When you need to protect steel from corrosion and enhance its design credentials, protective coatings from International Paint give you the edge. We have a complete range of products for all types of structures. For exterior steel, you can rely on our Interfine range of polysiloxane finish coatings to provide lasting color and gloss retention while offering superb corrosion protection to reduce the need for maintenance. Systems for protecting and maintaining concrete structures and floors complete the package.
Decorative Paints Masonry and wood Our globally recognized brands such as Dulux and Sikkens are renowned for their performance. They are designed to protect in the harshest environments, yet add beauty, contrast and flair to your design. Our Decorative Paints business supplies a full range of interior and exterior decoration and protection products for professional users, including paints, lacquers and varnishes, as well as products for surface preparation.
Coil and Extrusion Coatings Cladding, windows and curtain wall Used on steel and aluminum cladding for façades, roofing and architectural aluminum, AkzoNobel’s coil and extrusion coatings are available in a full spectrum of colors and effects. Trinar is a high performance fluoropolymer coating that is available for both coil and spray application, and can be found on some of the most recognizable buildings worldwide. We have a complete range of products that will make your next project stand out, no matter what AAMA specification you require.
Our Interchar range provides solutions where the need for lasting fire protection and good aesthetics is paramount. For buildings such as airports, offices and hotels, Interchar offers protection against cellulosic fires and is designed to keep steel below critical core temperature for longer.
