Town of Candia Community Profile Key Contacts Primary: Albert Hall III, email: [email protected] Secondary: Richard Snow and Al Couch General Information Supplied by Key Contacts: The Town of Candia will be partnering with the Town of Deerfield in Round Two of Solar UP NH. Candia is a small bedroom and former agricultural community with a population of 3,909 and 1,450 homes. The town is home to the Deerfield Fair and has an historic town center. The size of Candia and Deerfield are very similar which will offer commonalities between the two towns. The Town strongly supports this program and has a dedicated group of volunteers in place and is very committed to this project. The town’s solar team will undertake outreach to town residents through workshops, information on the town’s website, mailers, and articles in local media and with information at the town office and recycling center. Town road signs will also be used to trigger interest among residents and travelers who travel through Candia to get to Deerfield. The Town’s solar team feels residents will embrace Solar UP NH as an opportunity to have a single solar installer as our trusted partner. The town has had an energy committee in the past and will be adding volunteers to the solar team this summer. Several property owners in town are currently planning to install solar this summer. The Town has never conducted an inventory of solar PV installations. The number of solar installations currently in place in Candia according to the PUC is 4. The town adopted a renewable and solar property tax exemption last year. The Town believes Solar UP NH is well planned and will enable the town to accomplish the project goals to double the number of installations and reduce costs for everyone. Incorporated: 1763 Origin: First settled in 1748 as part of Chester, the town was originally called Charmingfare, probably because of its many parades, which are bridle paths winding through pleasant scenery. It was separated from Chester and named Candia in 1763 by Governor Benning Wentworth, possibly in memory of his sea travels as a Portsmouth trader following his graduation from Harvard in 1715. Candia was the name of the principal city of Crete, the largest of the Greek islands. Candia was the birthplace of poet, journalist, and publisher Sam Walter Foss.
