Merit, jointly awarded by the Marine Section, National Safety Council, and the American Merchant Marine Institute, for her outstanding feat in rescuing survivors from the ill-fated PACIFIC SEAFARERon January 15, 1961. The rescue was made at sea approximately 125 miles north of Cristobal under difficult weather conditions, whenthree survivors were picked up after having spent ten days on a raft. Just two hours before the rescue three others clinging to the sameraft had been eaten by sharks.
