THE{FULL}LIFE TOUCHMARK AT MOUNT BACHELOR VILLAGE

Love is in the air While February is American Heart Month—a time to focus on heart health and education—it is also the month for candy hearts, romantic Valentine’s Day dinners, and a celebration of love. Several Touchmark couples have shared many decades with their special Valentines, and have numerous stories of courtship, wedding mishaps, and marital advice to share. Pictured on their

First impressions wedding day are When Rod Elliott met his wife, Gloria, Rod and Gloria Elliott (left) and Jerry and Doreen Rawlins. he didn’t necessarily leave her with a positive first impression. They met while working in the student cafeteria at Washington State University. “After dinner, Rod was cleaning a big coffee urn, and his friends were throwing little boxes of cereal at him,” says Gloria. “He soaked his cleaning rag in the water in the urn and threw it at them. Unfortunately, I walked between them, and the rag hit me in the face. It was a long time before I would speak to him!” Rod eventually won her over, and the two married shortly after, when Gloria was 19 and Rod, 21. RP and Deanne Hatch laugh about the circumstances that brought them together. RP spent most of his teen years with family friends—including the family friends’ daughter, Marjorie—at Bass Lake in Madera County, California. “We got to know each other well enough to ride on the lake in my kayak in the evenings, and that resulted in me getting the mumps on VJ Day!” says RP. “A few years later we’re all at Cal, and she introduces me to her roommate, Deanne. Ever since, I have had fun torturing her about working both sides of the street, but we are careful to phone twice a year—on VJ Day to complain and on our anniversary with a big thanks!” Wedding memories Weldon and Marlene Hagen—married 61 years—had a long-lasting reminder of their wedding day. “My brother and cousin wrote with white shoe polish on our dark blue car, and we drove it all the way to southern California,” says Weldon. “After we washed it, the wax came off, and you could still see the writing.” For Doreen Rawlins, her wedding day had a stressful start. “For a bit, the groom (Jerry) was missing!” she says. He was eventually tracked down, and this August, the couple will celebrate their 61st (cont.)

anniversary. Doreen still has her wedding gown, and says, “It still fits!”

Kathy Ramsay doesn’t have her wedding dress, because she borrowed it from her soon-to-be sister-in-law. The couple also had to bail out Bob’s brother (a groomsman) from jail after he’d had a bit too much to drink the night before and had been arrested. “Fortunately, the wedding was at 5 pm in the afternoon!” Don Kiser married his next-door neighbor. Married for 58 years, their life together started by accepting what came their way—and moving on. “Our honeymoon flight was canceled due to heavy rain, so we had to switch to the train,” he says. Keys to marital bliss A common piece of advice from many of the couples is to never go to bed or part angry. “Always talk things out,” suggest the Elliotts. “The positive side to making a marriage last is being firm about expressing love and caring,” share the Hatches. Don Kiser adds, “Be a caring suitor.” “Include God in your plans, and don’t let little things be a problem,” suggest the Hagens. Kathy Ramsay sums up her and Bob’s secrets to a successful marriage: “Keep a sense of humor! Travel and seek new adventures together. Respect and honor your spouse, and be best friends!”

Let’s embrace wellness!

Dianna Lawrence Vice President, Wellness

The seven dimensions of wellness play key roles in our lives. They help contribute to a sense of well-being as long as we are open-minded and willing to embrace new experiences. Wellness is a lifelong process, another way of describing a healthy lifestyle. Here are the seven dimensions: Emotional: Having self-awareness and an understanding of healthy ways to cope with struggles Environmental: Taking care of our homes, communities, and world; engaging in recycling and outdoor activities Intellectual: Being open to learning new things Occupational: Spending time on our chosen career or feeding our passion while maintaining a balanced life Physical: Exercising and more— spending time with loved ones, eating healthfully, participating in daily activities, and sleeping well Social: Forming and maintaining relationships, which nurture us through difficult and good times Spiritual: Creating a life of meaning and purpose that stays true to what is most important to you; maintaining inner balance Is there an area in your life that merits more attention? How might paying more attention to it change your life? What is your wellness dimension goal? Write down two to three small changes you can make to enhance any of these areas. They become small steps to affect positive change! Some have potential to have a tremendous impact.
