Preface November Music 2014

Contents

There is something for everyone at November Music 2014. Those who love string quartets can feast on Kronos, Arditti, Brodsky, Bozzini, Ragazze, DoelenKwartet, and Zapp4. These ensembles often feature in extraordinary programmes or as part of special combinations. Slagwerk Den Haag is our ensemble in residence. Every day it will be possible to admire its diversity and talents. This year will see the second edition of Colours of Improvisation with an exciting triptych of international and Dutch jazz highlights. It promises to be as thrilling as the first. Naturally, we are very proud to present the 83-year old Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. She will attend the Dutch premiere of her latest work. Oud player Anouar Brahem, who rarely visits the Netherlands, will also be at November Music 2014. In addition, the South Netherlands Philharmonic plays four premieres. Not to mention the Kunstmuziekroute (art music trail) and the Premiere Day. The programme is full to overflowing. Come to the hospitable city of ’s-Hertogenbosch in November and take your pick from the varied offerings. Memorable musical experiences are guaranteed!

Installation expedition Kruithuis & Willem II Fabriek Sound artist and inspired storyteller Horst Rickels takes you around the historic rooms of the Kruithuis and Willem II Factory for a reconnaissance of unique sound sculptures created by various artists. Paper instruments, the sounds produced by a smouldering cigar, musical art works; expedition leader Horst Rickels is your guide in a fascinating landscape of sound installations. *The expedition also takes places on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. See page 35 for more information. Departs from: Kruithuis / 5 – 7 PM (€ 8 / € 5) Willem II Fabriek / 6.30 – 7.30 PM (€ 8 / € 5)

Anouar Brahem Quartet The Astounding Eyes of Rita new world music / jazz

visual music / composed / electronics

A poetic sound voyage that encompasses birth as well as death. Visual artists Paul and Menno de Nooijer have created an intimate performance on the subject of pain and the miracle of life. Accompanied by composer Jorrit Tamminga, recorder player Erik Bosgraaf, and guitarist Izhar Elias, the duo courageously plumbs the depths. Verkadefabriek Kleine Zaal / 8 – 9 PM (€ 15 / € 12)

‘Albums as perfect as this appear rarely’, wrote The Independent about Anouar Brahem’s The Astounding Eyes of Rita. The Tunisian oud player’s improvisations are exhilarating. Modern world music that brings inner peace and demonstrates masterly control of the instrument. Brahem fuses jazz, folk, and ethnical sources into a precious amalgam. With Khaled Yassine (darbouka, bendir), Björn Meyer (bass), and Klaus Gesing (bass clarinet). Verkadefabriek Grote Zaal / 8.30 – 9.45 PM (€ 25 / € 22)

philharmonie zuidnederland ft. Valgeir Sigurdsson & Stian Westerhus led by Bas Wiegers Rozalie Hirs / Stian Westerhus / Kate Moore / Valgeir Sigurdsson composed / soundscapes / electronics

An evening of orchestral crossovers. The South Netherlands Philharmonic pulls out all the stops as it presents new compositions. There are special guest appearances by Norwegian guitarist Stian Westerhus and the Icelandic electronics master, Valgeir Sigurosson. Among others, Sigurosson worked with Brian Eno, Feist, and Björk. He uses dark (water) colours to paint No Nights Dark Enough. Stian Westerhus – formerly Nils Petter Molvear’s guitarist – features prominently in The Redundance 40, his composition for orchestra and guitar. Tonight’s Dutch contribution is significant. Rozalie Hirs and Kate Moore – ‘composers in focus’ at November Music 2014 – have updated their respective pieces Roseherte and Days and Nature. Verkadefabriek Grote Zaal / 8 – 10.30 PM (€ 18 / € 15)

12

At a previous edition of November Music, the German composer/clarinettist Jörg Widmann met the Dutch Ragazze Quartet. He was smitten straight away. The Ragazze perform Widmann’s fiendishly difficult yet scintillating Jagd Quartett. It’s an invigorating piece of music that incorporates Beethoven’s famous opening measures of the Seventh Symphony. Together, the five musicians will play the emotional roller coaster Vier Studien zu einem Klarinettenquintett composed by Widmann’s influential teacher, Wolfgang Rihm. De Toonzaal / 7 – 8 PM (€ 13 / € 10)

Simon Steen-Andersen / Neue Vocalsolisten / Asamisimasa Buenos Aires visual music / music theatre / composed

A wondrous musical showcase brimming with dramatic absurdities and compositional finds. Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen’s music theatre throws reality out of kilter as the listeners are wrong-footed, time and again. Live video images play a key part in this chamber opera (without vocals). Ephemeral, surrealistic, and unforgettable.

friday 7 november

Slagwerk Den Haag Steve Reich’s Drumming minimal music / contemporary classic

jazz / new world music

Pianist Franz von Chossy combines jazz with chamber music and contemporary world music. ‘Hauntingly beautiful,’ is how AllaboutJazz described his music. The quintet features violinist Jeffrey Bruinsma, cellist Jörg Brinkmann, clarinettist Alex Simu, and drummer Yonga Sun. Add to this the world-renowned Wu Wei who plays the sheng, a traditional Chinese mouth organ. A concert that promises to be beautiful and cosmopolitan. Verkadefabriek Clubzaal / 7.15 PM – 8.15 PM (€ 11 / € 8)

Daredevil rhythms and compelling pulses fill the room. Tonight’s great minimal classic Drumming allowed Steve Reich to leave his musical mark for all times. An astounding work in four sections. The instruments include eight bongo drums, three marimbas, and three glockenspiels to which Reich added subtle vocal lines. The musical patterns merge and fan out almost imperceptibly, resulting in a hypnotic sound tapestry. Verkadefabriek Grote Zaal / 10 – 11 PM (€ 15 / € 12)

American jazz trio The Bad Plus has astounded the audience as well as the critics with a unique version of Le Sacre du Printemps. At November Music, it can be heard live in The Netherlands for the very first time. Prominent jazz magazine Downbeat awarded the eponymous album no fewer than five stars. ‘It’s about as badass as highbrow gets,’ exclaimed Rolling Stone. Although it is possible to descry elements of Stravinsky’s original work, The Bad Plus ‘owns’ the explosive material in an unprecedented manner. Infernal rhythms, gripping melodies, brilliant instrumental inventions, and magical abdominal harmonies. *Tomorrow, 8 November, Dutch guitarist Anton Goudsmit joins The Bad Plus on stage

An evening of inventive installations and innovative music; Plug is as versatile as they come. It mixes experimental music, rock, dance, broken buckets, improvisation, and bouncing washing machines as musicians, artists, and DJs engage in intense interaction. Arditti Quartet & Sarah Sun John Zorn / James Dillon / Georg Friedrich Haas

David Dramm / Big House Delirium Still

composed

For 40 years, the Arditti Quartet has championed the contemporary string quartet repertoire. In collaboration with soprano Sarah Sun, Irvine Arditti and his men perform Pandora’s Box, composed by New York all-rounder John Zorn. ‘…Zorn may be a jack-of-all-trades but this intriguing work shows that he should be taken seriously as a composer,’ exulted Dutch national newspaper De Volkskrant. The programme features work by Georg Friedrich Haas as well as the premiere of a piece by eccentric Scotsman James Dillon, who manages to mine pure gold from intricately complex sound textures. De Toonzaal / 12.30 – 1.30 PM (€ 15 / € 12)

composed / music theatre

A roaring hurricane of sound! The Dutch-American composer David Dramm has created a spectacular piece for accordion quartet plus 396 accordions on tape. Delirium Still is a tour de force. It was composed for the new accordion quartet Big House, consisting of Marieke Grotenhuis, Renée Bekkers, Pieternel Berkers, and Ellen Zijm. Verkadefabriek Matzer / 12.30 – 1.30 PM (€ 11 / € 8)

Susanna Borsch / David Dramm Susie, tell me a story! composed / music theatre / electronics

The recorder virtuoso and globetrotting troubadour ‘Susie’, aka Susanna Borsch, tells her own story through seven brand-new compositions written specifically for her. Each piece is an independent part of an adventurous odyssey. She was accompanied on this journey by the composers David Dramm, Felipe Waller, Oscar Bettison, Kate Moore, Michiel Mensingh, Guus Janssen, and Akiko Ushijima. Pand 18 / 2 – 3 PM (€ 11 / € 8)

A musical theatre performance about setbacks and resilience, based on a key event in Ties Mellema’s personal life. Some years ago, he lost the ability to play the saxophone with two hands, due to an accident. Since then he has rebuilt his strength and abilities. Mellema portrays his experiences with candour and unfailing musicality in The End of Desire, composed by Ian Wilson and directed by Jos van Kan. Composer/poet Micha Hamel has multiple talents. His song cycle Nous Deux gracefully combines poetry, music, and the human voice. Hamel asked composer Aspasia Nasopoulou to set some of his poems to music. In turn, he himself used the work of French surrealist poet Paul Éluard as a source of inspiration. Noordbrabants Museum Statenzaal / 2 – 3 PM (€ 11 / € 8)

Brodsky Quartet Robin de Raaff / Gesualdo / Dimitri Sjostakovitsj

Nieuw Amsterdams Peil Aan Barrels

Both Elvis Costello and Björk asked it to lend a musical hand. This is no great surprise as the British Brodsky Quartet excels in versatility and aims for perfection. The close-knit ensemble has been performing with style and panache for over 40 years. At November Music, it plays the world premiere of a quartet by Robin de Raaff. Plus Dmitri Sjostakovitsj’s String quartet No. 5 and work by Gesualdo.

Nieuw Amsterdams Peil throws in its lot with a street organ! The young Dutch composer Reza Namavar has a mature command of technique and a slightly absurdist sense of humour. Together with composer Janco Verduin, he explores the possibilities of the barrel organ when played in combination with live musicians. In addition, a premiere of a work by Arthur van der Kuip, who won his spurs as dance company T.r.a.s.h’s house composer.

Marc Ribot Trio jazz / impro / rock

Marc Ribot is a top class musician. Big names such as Tom Waits, John Zorn, and Elvis Costello have requested his guitar services. Meanwhile, the trio resembles a high-level summit between three generations of improvisers. Elder statesman is legendary bassist Henry Grimes, who has played with Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. Drummer Chad Taylor is equally at home in the world of jazz as in the realm of post-rock. De Volkskrant wrote this about their recently released live album: ‘An ode to the past but without nostalgia. Musicianship that goes all out ****’. *Tonight, Marc Ribot joins string quartet ZAPP4 on stage

Boudewijn Tarenskeen / Cappella Amsterdam / Paul Koek Luther music theatre / modern vocal music

W2 Poppodium / 3 – 4 PM (€ 13 / € 10)

Wegen en Water, a dance suite in seven movements, is composed by Rozalie Hirs who used 200 electronic sounds in quadraphonic projections that surround the audience. In addition, the Canadian Bozzini Quartet plays Marc Sabat’s Euler Lattice Spirals Scenery, in praise of the composers Claude Vivier and Ben Johnston. Lastly, a premiere of a work by the Belgian composer Frederik Neyrinck.

Composer Boudewijn Tarenskeen describes the reformer Martin Luther as a man with a free and incisive mind, who gradually gets entangled in his own ideas. A brilliant and deeply religious thinker, struggling with despair and dread. The oratorio features an intense and agonizing dialogue between the tormented Luther and the grandiose choir (Cappella Amsterdam) that takes on various roles: audience, well-meaning bystanders, a suspicious world. With an extraordinary epilogue written by Gerardjan Rijnders. Baritone Michel Poels is Luther and the actor Titus Muizelaar is the interpreter. Directed by Paul Koek. De Volkskrant extolled Tarenskeen’s Luther as ‘Theatrical, dramatic, and fascinating.’ *A reading of Marc Versteeg before the concert introduces the era of Luther and Jheronimous Bosch

Rosa Ensemble ft. Eefje de Visser / 33 1/3 Collective Soselo in Siberia visual music / music theatre / psychedelic rock

‘A feast for the eye and ear,’ wrote the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad about the amazing and terrifying liminal world where singer-songwriter Eefje de Visser dares to venture. 33 1/3 Collective’s fascinating video images show a gradual blurring of boundaries between reality and projections. Psychedelic rock mixes with the contemporary sound of Rosa Ensemble in Soselo in Siberia.

East and West meet in the oeuvre of composer Seung-Ah Oh. Her music is addictive and magical; it embraces sound poetry, silence, and mystical drama. Words and Beyond II, directed by Ria Marks, contains traditional Korean chanting, geomungo, percussion, dance, and accordion. Oh’s work has a strong physical impact when performed live: musical gestures and sonic rituals merge in a mesmerizing setting.

The musical spectrum of contemporary jazz and impro is vast. Colours of Improvisation (which consists of three parts) puts the spotlight on these variegated colours. It consists of two unique collaborations between Dutch and American stars. Plus the newest global jazz sensation. Zapp4 ft. Marc Ribot A review in NRC Handelsblad describes ZAPP4 as ‘The hardest grooving string quartet of the Netherlands’. The group mixes genres and styles at will. This time – for the first time – in collaboration with guitarist Marc Ribot, who has played with Tom Waits, John Zorn, McCoy Tyner, Robert Plant, and many others. The Bad Plus ft. Anton Goudsmit The American piano trio The Bad Plus is one of the most original and unique jazz bands of the past 15 years. With their no-nonsense rock attitude, the trio seems an ideal partner for the maverick Dutch jazz improvisator, guitarist Anton Goudsmit. Tigran Hamasyan Trio The Armenian-American pianist Tigran Hamasyan is a sensational new addition to improvised music. From jazz and folk to postrock and progmetal; Hamasyan’s musical (jazz) universe stirs audiences.

How does it work? On Sunday the Kunstmuziekroute, brimming with musical pleasures, spans an entire afternoon. It’s a grandiose tradition on the last festival day. Visit downtown Den Bosch and enjoy a plethora of succinct concerts in extraordinary locations. Buying one ticket (which can be exchanged for a wristband on the day) offers a choice between approximately 20 concerts. Compose your own programme! Conveniently, each concert can be heard several times in the course of the afternoon. There are various signposted routes with individual themes (purely meant as suggestions).

Live on stage, Dances & Canons is an unforgettable experience. The audience is seated around Lankhoorn; loudspeakers encapsulate the listeners in a web of whirling piano sounds. A designated light design adds a special touch.

The Canadian saxophonist Colin Stetson is sensational. He uses a massive bass saxophone as well as his vocal chords to create enthralling sound tapestries, built of various layers that scour, mix, fuse, and intermingle. ‘Whack smack bang, in your face’, exclaimed De Volkskrant in a five star review about Stetson. He regularly joins forces with artists such as Arcade Fire, The National, Tom Waits, and Feist.

Guardian of the Chinese tradition and contemporary sound innovator, Wu Wei is one of the most important sheng players of today. Musical adventures are as plentiful as geysers in dazzling Iceland. In the contemporary music scene, too, many groups are attracting attention. The Icelandic ensemble Nordic Affect plays modern music as well as baroque. It subtly combines the two genres in a single concert. Nordic Affect premieres works by Taylan Susam and Brendan Faegre (both commissioned by November Music), Thurídur Jónsdóttir, Gudmundur Steinn Gunnarsson, and Thomas Smetryns. Jazz that knows no boundaries for guitar, oboe, and double bass. Accordion virtuoso Vincent van Amsterdam plays old and new work with equal alacrity. De Profundis (1978) is the very first piece written for bayan (Russian accordion) by the world famous composer Sofia Gubaidulina. The old man and the sea (2014) by Aart Strootman is an ode to Ernest Hemingway’s impressive eponymous novel. At 70, saxophonist and free jazz pioneer Evan Parker embodies the brilliance of the English improvisation scene. Parker is well-known for his fabulous circular breathing technique. He has worked with stimulating sparring partners such as Peter Brötzmann, John Zorn, and Fred Frith. Today, he meets up with the Swedish organist Sten Sandell, a freethinker for whom improvisation, experimenting, and composing are inextricably linked. De Toonzaal / 11.30 AM & 1 PM

Joris Roelofs & Mats Eilertsen

John Zorn’s Book of Angels is a musical celebration that fuses influences of Jewish traditional music, neoclassicism, and contemporary jazz. The cycle was written for the golden couple of the New York improvisation scene: violinist Mark Feldman and pianist Sylvie Courvoisier. At November Music, the duo performs in the historic synagogue De Toonzaal, an apt location. *During the third set (at 5 PM), Feldman and Courvoisier will play their own compositions

‘An unrivalled reed player,’ is how Dutch daily newspaper Trouw described Joris Roelofs, one of the best saxophonists/bass clarinettists in the country. An upstanding improvisator, technically sophisticated and emotionally eloquent. He has shared a stage with pianist Brad Mehldau and was invited at a young age to join the well-known Vienna Art Orchestra. At November Music, Roelofs will enter the musical arena with Norwegian bassist Mats Eilertsen.

sunday 9 november f.c. Jongbloed / Aart Strootman Peter Schats’ To You composed / performance

One of the weirdest compositions in Dutch music history is making a comeback. Peter Schat’s To You (1973) has legendary status but is rarely played on a concert stage as it requires an extravagant combination of soprano, six guitars, three bass guitars, four pianos, two organs, and the famous giant humming tops. Nevertheless, Ensemble f.c. Jongbloed plus initiator (and guitarist) Aart Strootman will rise to the challenge – alongside the reconstructed humming tops.

Perhaps surprisingly, piano and percussion have a lot in common. After all, when someone plays the piano, small felt-padded hammers are striking the strings. Slagwerk Den Haag and pianist Ralph van Raat approach the percussive aspects of the piano from various angles in Peter Adriaansz’ composition Hammer Music. Verkadefabriek Matzer / 2.30 & 3.30 PM

The music played by Ensemble Lunatree evolves in close collaboration with kindred composers. New pieces by Raphael Vanoli and Luc Houtkamp are part of the programme, which was specifically put together for November Music. Ensemble composers Piet-Jan van Rossum and Arnold Marinissen are responsible for the ‘musical design’. Knalpot guitarist Raphael Vanoli and percussionist Fedor Teunisse join Lunatree live on stage.

It’s not a gadget owned by Bruce Wayne; a bat detector is a real piece of equipment that shifts ultrasonic bat frequencies to the human hearing range. The sounds that the detector produces are incorporated into a musical work, vibrating with eerie melodies and seemingly synthetic rhythms.

Kytopia is a new collaboration between Slagwerk Den Haag and Club Guy & Roni, for the first time live together on stage as part of the KunstmuziekRoute. It’s both party and performance. With different types of music and acrobatic dance.

Sofia Gubaidulina is one of the most important living composers of the early part of the 21st century. To her, music is a mystical sound ritual. As she pulls listeners into a spiritual, almost sacral world Gubaidulina works magic with the elements of space and time. The 83-year old composer will be in attendance at November Music when the Amsterdam Sinfonietta performs the Dutch premiere of her new composition for flute, clarinet, and strings, entitled Why? In addition, a classic work by Dmitri Shostakovich, Ms. Gubaidulina’s colleague and compatriot. Chamber-Symphony for strings op. 118a is a signature piece for the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, which has earned them plaudits all over the world. It is a renowned and very successful arrangement of Shostakovich’s String Quartet no. 10 by the violinist Rudolf Barshai. *At 6 PM, Elmer Schönberger interviews Sofia Gubaidulina in the Clubzaal of Verkadefabriek (free entry)

The closing concert of November Music 2014 features the world’s most famous string quartet. Kronos will play a selection of exotic quartets, with a focus on modern music from the Middle East and a special guest appearance by Dutch singer Nora Fischer. The Kronos Quartet (from San Francisco) has performed world premieres of works by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Sofia Gubaidulina and played on the soundtrack of various films, including Requiem for a Dream and The Great Gatsby. Nora Fischer is one of the Netherlands’ major vocal talents. Last year, she sang at November Music in a piece by Osvaldo Golijov, an Argentinean composer whose work is in the Kronos Quartet repertoire. Verkadefabriek Grote Zaal / 9 – 10 PM (€ 25 / € 22)

It is no accident that the expedition in the former cigar factory Willem II visits, among others, Ronald van der Meijs’ installation, which uses cigar smoke. In installation #10, Jochem van Tol explores the sound of paper in many different ways whilst Kate Moore’s Bone China is about the timbres produced by chinaware.
