Dear Book Club Host: Welcome back! It’s time for another meeting of The 39 Clues Reading Club! For new club members, be sure to check out the Establish Your Cahill Stronghold introductory theme materials. Or, if your club has just finished reading one of The 39 Clues books, visit the book overview tab for book-specific content. This month, the theme is ‘Tis the Season for Adventure! Get ready to celebrate, Cahill-style, with a The 39 Clues holiday party! Make sure to prepare ahead for the party: 1) Download The 39 Clues Holiday Invitation template from scholastic.com/39cluesclub: A) Fill in the details (e.g., date, time, location, special details) of your event. B) Photocopy the filled-in handout, making enough copies for each club member. C) Fold each sheet into quarters so that “’Tis the Season for Adventure!” appears on the front. D) Send out invitations to let club members know about the festive event.

2) G et kids in the spirit by decorating your meeting space, playing holiday music, and serving The 39 Clues-inspired holiday treats. Use this excerpt from The 39 Clues: Rapid Fire #1: Legacy for inspiration and/or read aloud at the party: “This can’t possibly all be for us,” Dan said, his mouth hanging open long after he’d finished speaking. The parlor of Grace’s mansion was filled wall to wall with Christmas decorations. Enormous, ornate wreaths hung on the walls, dressed in shimmering white ribbons, and almost every surface in the room was covered in flickering red and gold candles. A warm fire crackled conversationally from the fireplace in the back of the room, where two beautiful stockings were hanging, full to bursting. At the center of the parlor, a giant tree towered over piles and piles of gifts in shining red and green wrapping paper, all of which was encircled by what looked like a functioning toy train set. It was as if a city of presents had been built into the side of a jolly green mountain. Mugs of steaming chocolate, eggnog, and cider were laid out on a table, as well as a feast of meats, cheeses, and candy. Dan noted with approval that there were plenty of red gummies.” 3) D ownload the following activity handouts from scholastic.com/39cluesclub and familiarize yourself with the following activity instructions.

Activity 1: Spin The 39 Clues Dreidel Prepare ahead: 1) Photocopy the Spin The 39 Clues Dreidel (A) and (B) handouts, making enough copies for every club member. 2) Be sure to have plenty of chocolate coins (“gelt”) or something similar to use in the game. 3) Have colored pencils, markers, glue, tape, and scissors available. 4) Provide a straw or ballpoint pen for every club member. 5) Optional: To make a sturdier dreidel, use thin cardboard (e.g., from a cereal box).

Distribute the Spin The 39 Clues Dreidel (A) and (B) handouts and supplies to everyone present. After everyone has finished making their dreidels, it’s time to play the game! Explain the rules and answer any questions. Have club members play together as one group or divide them in smaller groups of two or more people. Only one dreidel per group is needed to play. Based on the traditional Chanukah game, The 39 Clues dreidel game features the four Cahill branches instead of four Hebrew letters. Game Rules: • Distribute the gelt evenly among all of the players. (Each player should have about ten pieces.) •A t the beginning of each round, have each player place one piece of gelt in the center of the circle (“the pot”). •T ake turns spinning the dreidel. When it stops spinning, look at the top image to determine what action to perform next: Janus = Nothing (“nun”). The player does nothing. Tomas = Everything (“gimmel”). The player gets to take the whole pot. Ekaterina = Half (“hey”). The player gets half of the pot. Lucian = Put in (“shin”). The player adds one piece of gelt to the pot. • The player with the most gelt wins.

Activity 2: The Night Before Clues-mas Word Game Prepare ahead: 1) Photocopy The Night Before Clues-mas Word Game handout, making one copy for each pair of club members. 2) Have pens or pencils available.

Distribute The Night Before Clues-mas Word Game handout. This activity should be done in pairs. One member, who hasn’t read the poem, should supply the words or phrases that the other requests, based on the category written below each blank. When each blank has been filled in, the club member who wrote down the words can read the finished story.

Activity 3: Caroling with the Cahills Prepare ahead: 1) Photocopy the Caroling with the Cahills [A] and [B] handouts, making enough copies for each club member. 2) You might want to have copies of each book from the original The 39 Clues series available, for members to reference as they write their song lyrics.

Distribute the Caroling with the Cahills [A] and [B] handouts and read the introduction aloud. Have club members work in pairs or small groups. After everyone has finished writing their lyrics, assign each group one (or more, depending on the number of groups) of the twelve verses to sing. Then, have everyone sing the finished song together.

Activity 4: Crack the Wish List Code Prepare ahead: 1) Photocopy the Crack the Wish List Code handout, making enough copies for each club member. 2) Familiarize yourself with how the game works.

Explain how this code-cracking game works. Be ready to offer club members help unscrambling any words they can’t unscramble. The unscrambled words: 1. Dickens 2. Titanium 3. Fountain 4. Carrier 5. Camera 6. Flame 7. Boots
