MULTI CAT 2712 MAKES THREE FOR BRIGGS MARINE Briggs Marine and Environmental Services is due to receive shortly what will be its third vessel from Damen in recent years. The first two were the Forth Jouster, a Multi Cat 2611, and a 62m Anchor Handling Tug Supplier 75 Kingdom of Fife. This latest addition will be a second Damen Multi Cat, this time the larger 2712. Designated the Forth Warrior, it is currently finishing fitting out at Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld in the Netherlands. The 27-metre 2712 is an exceptionally versatile workboat capable of taking on almost any role in the coastal environment. Roles for the Forth Warrior will include anchor handling, dredging assistance and vessel support in and around the UK. In addition, special equipment has been installed that will extend its capabilities even further. This includes a DPS-1 system for use in activities such as windfarm support and a four-point mooring system for diving operations, featuring removable winches each capable of holding 320 metres of wire. Like all Damen Multi Cats, the 2712 has spacious deck space for carrying equipment, complete 360° visibility from the deckhouse and a shallow draught for operations close to the shore. Based in Fife on the east coast of Scotland, Briggs works with some of the UK’s leading maritime organisations. For example, since its

in 1998 and with exhibitors and visitors coming from across north west Europe we appreciate its importance in the annual events calendar.

delivery the Kingdom of Fife has been working on Briggs’ £100 million contract to provide maintenance and mooring support for the UK’s Royal Navy. For Damen, this latest purchase by Briggs Marine represents an unequivocal vote of confidence in the Multi Cat class as a range of sturdy, all-purpose workboats from a client with extensive experience in their operation. The two companies also share the values that come from family ownership and a strong maritime heritage. With its reputation for delivering high quality, cost effective marine solutions in diverse challenging environments on time and within budget, it is important to Briggs Marine that it has a highly versatile fleet that can provide a wide range of services with excellent utilisation rates. The last few years have seen an uplift in business, especially in the growing offshore renewables market, and Briggs believes that investing in its expertise and marine assets will underpin its ability to provide an ongoing reliable service to this growing and expanding industry. We are confident that the Multi Cat 2712 will prove a valuable addition to its fleet and give many years of trouble-free service.

This year we have brought a variety of vessels including the 27-metre Multi Cat 2712. After the show it will be heading to its area of operations on the east coast of Scotland, but while it is here visitors can see for themselves its spacious deck area, comfortable accommodation and the many features that make it one of the most versatile workboats on the market today. Next to the Multi Cat will be two of our new 10-metre, RHIB 1050 rigid hull inflatable boats. One has an inboard engine while the other is fitted with twin outboards. Fast and tough, these mil-spec craft are designed for hard use in adverse conditions. If you want to try them out on the water, just speak to a member of the Damen team. Also available for on-the-water trials are two of our Stan Pilot boats, a 1505 and a 1605. The vessels are constructed from fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) and their lightweight composite construction gives improved performance and fuel economy. We look forward to meeting customers old and new, and maybe even selling a boat or two! CASPER VERMEULEN | SALES MANAGER UK ARJEN VAN ELK | SALES MANAGER UK

The decision was based on the vessel’s versatility and proven quality, which together yielded an unbeatable reasonable total cost of ownership. The company’s positive experiences of doing business previously with Damen also played a role. Like the others in its class the CMS Warrior has a 52-tonne bollard pull ahead and modern and spacious accommodation for up to six crew. Clyde Marine operates a diverse fleet. As well as having six tugs that provide mooring, boarding and towing services around the clock, it also has six passenger vessels capable of taking up to 250 passengers. These are used for a variety of purposes including charter cruises and transfers for cruise liners, Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels, shipbuilding trials and ship repair parties. Specialist training As part of the delivery package, some of the crew from Clyde Marine Services underwent intensive ASD training at the 360-Control tug and offshore simulator centre in IJmuiden, the Netherlands, which is owned by Damen Shipyards and Iskes Towage.

CLYDE MARINE ADDS AN ASD 2310 TUG TO ITS FLEET Clyde Marine Services, based on the west coast of Scotland, has taken delivery of an ASD tug, a 23-metre 2310 class. Named the CMS Warrior, she has joined the company’s 12-strong fleet which already includes a Damen Stan Tug 1906 and a 1907, and two

vessels of the Damen Stan Tug 1 class. The company purchased its first Damen vessel, a Pushy Cat, around thirty years ago. Founded over one hundred years ago and now managed by a fourth generation of the Munro family, Clyde Marine operates mainly

in and around the Firth of Clyde and its various ports. Committed to maintaining and investing in a modern fleet, Clyde Marine viewed a number of alternatives before choosing the ASD 2310.

The ASD 2310 class is built at Damen Shipyards Changde, China. The yard specialises in the construction of tugs and workboats which are then transported on a BigLift vessel back to Europe where they are finished and handed over to clients or held in stock for rapid delivery at a future date.

A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP DAMEN IN THE UK It’s nearly half a century since Damen first sold a vessel in the UK, and since then the group has become a leading supplier to the UK maritime industry with over 300 new vessels sold since 1969, plus many more used boats via Damen’s Trading Department. Today, two men are responsible for the company’s sales activities in the UK and Ireland; Casper Vermeulen and Arjen van Elk, with 18 and 4 years’ experience respectively in the role. Our biggest export market In recent years the British Isles have become Damen’s biggest export destination helped, in part, by Damen’s principle of standardisation. Another important factor has been the arrival of the offshore renewables sector, in which the UK is currently the world leader. The Twin Axe FCS 2610 design has been a particular success in that industry, and strong demand

in the UK contributed to it rapidly becoming the standard for the industry worldwide. That sector has also been a consistent buyer of Multi Cats and other workboats in recent years. The growth of the fish farming industry has been another driver of demand in the UK, while the high-end offshore market of complex PSVs and Damen’s own offshore carriers continues to show promise, despite recent market conditions. Even the UK naval sector, traditionally an all-British affair, is becoming more open to commercial off-the-shelf vessels. Damen has been looking at the possibility of becoming involved with non-strategic vessel construction, and in February this year Serco contracted Damen to build an ART (Advanced Rotortug®) 80-32 tug to support the new aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy. In recent years Damen’s ability to offer

financing has been appreciated by our UK clients, both established and those new to the market. Often we find that we can provide finance right from the start of a contract when other lenders are less willing, with the client’s bank then taking over the loan once the vessel is operational. This helps the client establish a long-term relationship with its own finance provider. A special market For Damen the UK is a special market, and one that feels familiar in many ways to natives of the Netherlands. Both share a long tradition of global seafaring, and many maritime companies in both countries operate vessels all over the world. The Dutch and British also have the same down-to-earth approach to doing business, which is an important factor in developing long-term business relationships.

The UK market is also open to new ideas and designs, which is why many of Damen’s standardised vessel designs have made their debut in the UK, including in recent years various Multi Cats, Stan tugs, ASD tugs and Fast Crew Suppliers. The first of Damen’s revolutionary new Service Operations Vessel is currently in build for Bibby Marine Services. Many custom vessels have also been designed and built for UK customers. So for Damen in general, and Casper and Arjen in particular, the annual Seawork event is always a pleasure; an opportunity to catch up with old friends and discover new opportunities just around the corner.

BUILD OF FIRST DAMEN WALK 2 WORK VESSEL GETS UNDERWAY construction. An example of this is the fore and aft sections, which are being constructed at the same time as individual units so that, once complete, they can immediately be welded together. The novel production techniques being used for the build present no problem for the project managers. The team at Galati is very experienced in building complex one-off or first-of-series vessels, and this is reflected not only in the speed at which they work, but also the adaptability of the work procedures. Bibby also maintains its own three-man team permanently on site so as to ensure rapid decision making and smooth communications between client and yard.

31 March 2016 was a red letter day for the Damen Shipyards Group with the official keel-laying ceremony for its first Walk 2 Work vessel. This completely new, ultramodern vessel concept had been under development at Damen for several years. Starting with a completely blank piece of paper, Damen and its associate research institutes set out to analyse the feedback that it had been receiving from clients in the renewables and offshore industry. This information was then applied to create a vessel that would deliver new levels of efficiency and productivity through its design and technology, and would be capable of operating in a much wider range of sea conditions than conventional vessels. Designated the Walk 2 Work vessel while it was under development due to the motion compensation transfer system that plays a key role in its effectiveness, it has since become the Damen Service Operations Vessel with Bibby Marine Services the launch customer. The keel laying ceremony for the Bibby WaveMaster 1 took place at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania. This followed on from the start of steel cutting the previous month. Innovative construction techniques The build will take place over a relatively short construction period of 14 months. To make it as efficient as possible the

DAMEN TIMES | SEAWORK 2016 SPECIAL

production process is divided into seven phases, and Damen is using a ‘parallel building’ strategy for the overall

Confidence in the future At the keel laying ceremony Bibby Marine Services CEO Stephen Blaikie was enthusiastic about the prospect of the ongoing construction of the Bibby WaveMaster 1: “We believe in this market, we believe in the vessel and we believe in our own capabilities to satisfy the demands of the customer,” he said. “The proof of this is that we have ordered this vessel on a speculative basis – we haven’t ordered it against a contract. I think that this is a sign of our confidence both in the vessel and the market sector. We are looking forward to continuing working with Damen on this vessel and hopefully on others in the future. Bibby’s aspirations are not to be a one-vessel company in this market.”

RENEWABLES SERVICE VESSEL IN BUILD FOR DELTA MARINE Damen is currently working with long-standing client Delta Marine on a new vessel design called the Damen Renewables Service Vessel 3315. The Scotland-based offshore wind service provider recently awarded Damen a construction contract looking towards a launch in early 2017. The design of the 3315 has been under development for the past two years. The team at Delta Marine had a clear view of what they required and Damen used its expertise to bring the concepts to life and add the engineering and technical detail. Continuous two-way feedback refined the designs, leading to an end result that exactly matches the needs of the client. Damen is committed to a process of continuous development for all its designs, with even established vessels like Multi Cats and Shoalbusters being fine-tuned on an ongoing basis. The Renewable Service Vessel 3315 is based on Damen’s Multi Cat platform, but with changes including moving the wheelhouse forward and leaving the aft deck open. Another critical design factor was bringing in the DWT under 500 tonnes, very important in helping to keeps the costs down. Delta Marine has been using Damen Multi Cats since the class was first introduced over ten years ago and currently has four in its

fleet. The company focuses on the offshore renewables industry, but is also active within a number of other sectors which is facilitated by the versatility of the Multi Cat designs. Delta’s Multi Cat 2613 VOE Earl took part in the recovery operation of the Costa Concordia where she served as a dive support and lifting vessel. She was complimented by the Salvage Master for her speed and versatility, who likened her to a Leatherman multi-tool. The experience of the company and especially its crews was an important factor in the high quality feedback generated for the new design. The new 3315 will be able to take on a lot of work that currently only larger offshore construction vessels can perform. Full DP2 capability is one important element in enabling this, as is the wide deck which will be able to take a cable lay carousel, work class ROVs and cable trenching machines. It will also be fitted with two large HS Marine cranes and a four-point mooring system. Once the hull is completed at a Damen facility in Poland, Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld in the Netherlands will complete the final outfitting process, with the launch scheduled for Q1 2017. Together, Damen and Delta Marine look forward to introducing the Damen Renewables Service Vessel 3315 to the world.

DAMEN UNVEILS NEW COMPACT MULTI-ROLE UTILITY VESSEL Work is due to start shortly on the first of a new class of Damen utility vessel UV2410. This multi-role platform is the result of extensive consultation with customers active in the aquaculture industry in the UK and Norway. For these customers it was important that the rule length of the new vessel is no more than 24-metres and, for UK customers in particular, that it fits within the 200 Gross Tonnage limit. Feedback indicated that within that length maximum possible protected deck space and good seakeeping were top priorities, along with ample accommodation. The Utility Vessel 2410 delivers all these requirements and more besides. “With the wide beam of 9.5 metres and minimal superstructure this vessel provides 120 m² of unobstructed deck space, yet still has comfortable accommodation for up to six crew. The design is optimised for a wide range of roles including maintenance support, oil recovery, diving support, buoy handling, safety stand-by, ROV support, surveying and

much more” said Lodewijk van Os, Product Director Workboats. “It is also ideal for aquaculture, with easy access to the waterline amidships via steps and a three-metre opening in the bulwark, and the capability of mounting dedicated equipment including up to two cranes. In fact, the deck is pretty much ready for anything; A-frames, winches, davits for rescue boats, task-specific containers and many other types of equipment can be quickly added and removed as the vessel receives new assign- ments.” The Utility Vessel 2410 shares many of the renowned attributes of other vessels from Damen’s extensive workboat ranges. As well as for aquaculture companies, Damen envisages that the 2410 will be very attractive to port authorities, governmental organisations, marine contractors and anyone involved in varied, water-based maintenance operations.

BUYING OR SELLING A USED VESSEL DAMEN TRADING HAS THE DEAL FOR YOU Visitors to Seawork 2016 will have the opportunity to meet with members of the Damen Trading team, the respected brokerage department of the Damen Shipyards Group. Specialists in buying and selling used workboats of all kinds and from any shipyard, Damen Trading’s Michel Radjiman and Maarten van Willigen will be bringing with them the annual brochure, hot off the press with the latest vessels available for sale. The new-look catalogue reflects the recent smart redesign of the Damen Trading website and will include a new section introducing the members of the team, adding a welcome personal touch. Heading the list is a pair of Stan Tugs 1205. It is unusual to find a matched pair of tugs for sale in this way and, at just five years old, these compact harbour tugs with a nine tonne bollard pull are likely to find a home quickly. Damen Trading offers excellent terms for Damen customers looking to trade in used vessels, whatever their origins, against the purchase of Damen ships, but it also offers competitive terms against straight sales. Sellers can have their vessel advertised in the

towage company Fratelli Neri SpA, which in July 2015 had ordered a new Damen ASD 3212, subsequently purchased two secondhand Stan Tugs 2608 as they required extra capacity at short notice. The transfer of ownership of these took place in Dubai, after which they sailed under their own power to Constanza, Romania, for their primary role of hose handling at the local terminal. Even great age need not be a barrier to a successful transfer of ownership. Last year Damen Trading brokered the sale of the crane barge Anjo to Sterk in Waterwerk BV on the retirement of her previous owner. The 106year old crane vessel was in superb condition and continues to work in the civil engineering construction industry as she has for over a century. brochure and on the website at absolutely no cost. Only when Damen has sold it does commission become due. Damen Trading and its global network saw a strong increase in the demand of used vessels

in 2015. Sales included four vessels under the direct ownership of Damen; two 1605 Fast Crew Suppliers and two Stan Tugs 2608. It also acted as the broker for two Damen Stan Tugs (a 1605 and a 1906), as well as for a pusher and a crane vessel. Italian harbour

HOW THE UK MARKET DROVE DAMEN PILOT BOAT DEVELOPMENT Around ten years ago, the two Damen Sales Managers for the United Kingdom complained that they were unable to sell any pilot boats in the UK, as the feedback from UK operators was that Damen did not have any ‘dedicated’ pilot boats in its product portfolio. The fact of the matter was that, as that time, this was true. Damen’s High Speed Craft (HSC) product group did offer pilot boats, but these were mere customised multipurpose tenders instead of dedicated pilot vessels. As the UK pilot boat market was then huge, as it still is today, it was swiftly decided to do some market research. In the following months, the UK sales team visited nine pilot stations in and around the UK. Their mission; to test the boats currently in use to determine their characteristics, good and bad, and also to run through a detailed questionnaire with the technical manager at each station. This process took around two months and with this information the specifications for new designs

that took into account as many of the requirements as possible of the UK operators were drawn up. One of these was the Damen Stan Pilot 1505 and, once the design was prepared, engineering and then construction got underway on the first, proof-of-concept demonstrator. The result was a great looking boat with superior characteristics compared to all boats that the sales team had experienced during their visits and the boat was revealed to the UK workboat market at Seawork 2006 in Southampton. Everything looked good and our story should have had a fairy tale ending such as “and many more Damen pilot boats were delivered to extremely happy customers in the UK”. Yet something was missing! Of the more than ten of these vessels that were delivered in the following years, only one of them went to the UK. Further investigations revealed that the reason was, that Damen could not comply with a key requirement of

eight of the nine original pilot stations. They wanted the hulls to be built using composite materials. Back then, Damen had neither the know-how nor the facilities to build composite vessels. However, in July 2013, this completely changed. With the acquisition of an experienced composite yard in Antalya, Turkey, Damen now has a modern facility that is tailor-made for the series production of composite vessels. This allows Damen to offer to the UK market the Stan Pilot 1505, along with a wide range of other composite work boats, as it should have been from the beginning; with a composite hull and superstructure. The composite Stan Pilot 1505 can be seen on this year’s Seawork marina, alongside its larger sister ship, the Stan Pilot 1605. Come and have a look around and arrange your on-thewater trial to experience just how good they are.

READY FOR THE STARTING GUN DAMEN BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS With the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention potentially just months away from coming into force, Damen has a full range of solutions ready to support both ship owners and ports as they move to comply with the new regulations. Port solutions for visiting vessels The Damen InvaSave mobile ballast water treatment (BWT) system is a unique, innovative port solution that gives ship owners an alternative to retrofitting fixed BWT systems. InvaSave is a plug-and-play system in a self-sufficient mobile container that can be connected to the ballast water outflow for full compliance. Port authorities or service providers can mount the InvaSave on a trailer, barge or support vessel to provide a ballast water service to visiting vessels without onboard systems. It can also serve as a backup in case onboard systems fail. The Damen InvaSave is currently in the final stages of IMO type approval by the Dutch flag state,

DAMEN TIMES | SEAWORK 2016 SPECIAL

when it will be the only certified solution to treat ballast water at the point of discharge for ports worldwide. Onboard systems for vessels of all sizes In order to offer its clients a wide choice of BWT retrofit solutions, Damen has partnered with specialist manufacturers in this sector. For workboats and other smaller to medium-sized vessels it offers the Damen LoFlo. Powered by BioSea, this is a compact, low energy solution using filtration and UV for the many vessels in the world requiring no more than 30, 60 or 90 m3 per hour. The IMO-type approved LoFlo systems ensure that smaller vessels can avoid unnecessarily high investment cost, power consumption and excessive footprints. The systems can be supplied in a compact arrangement mounted on a skid for easy and efficient, ‘plug-and-play’ integration on board the vessel, or they can be installed in a modular arrangement.

An alternative is the Damen BalCon system. This is a plugand-play modular designed BWT, available in a wide range of capacity requirements from 100 m3 up to 1500 m3 per hour, all within a single TEU. The BalCon can be delivered with an Evoqua Seacure system, a Trojan Marinex or a BioSea treatment system. Quick to fit All Damen’s BWT retrofit solutions share the same objectives of being quick to fit, thereby minimising vessel downtime. While the entire design, engineering and sourcing process can take some time, the actual period spent in the dock is no more than the normal docking time required for a special survey. Damen’s focus on using modular designs wherever possible reduces the disruption in installation and maximises the use of existing free space on a vessel. That, combined with the breadth of the product range that it offers, ensures that Damen has the solutions to meet almost any need.

NEW COMPOSITE WORKBOATS ADVANCED ROTORTUG 80 -32 DELIVER COST AND PERFORMANCE FOR THE ROYAL NAVY A recent initiative by Damen has been the development of a wide range of composite vessels. As part of this process Cyrus Yachts, a specialised composites yard in Antalya, Turkey, that built 35 metre motor yachts for the Vitters Group, was acquired along with its skilled and experienced workforce, and the facilities upgraded. The production of two existing composite Damen boats: the Damen Interceptor 1102 and the Stan Pilot / Stan Patrol 2205, was transferred from a subcontracting yard to this facility, now called Damen Shipyards Antalya. The decision to develop composite vessels was based on both technical and economic reasons. For the same weight, composite vessels are stronger and safer than aluminium vessels, and this is a very useful feature for medium speed vessels such as pilot boats, crew boats and patrol boats. However, when speed is of utmost importance, composites offer the possibility of building to the same design, but with a lighter displacement than the same boat made from aluminium. For this reason, the latest generation of Interceptors from Damen is being built in glass/carbon/ epoxy. In addition to these performance advantages, series building using composite materials delivers production advantages which bring down the cost price per unit. Three in one – the 1605 The first vessel which was developed purely to be built in Antalya was the 1605, a very modern, semi Axe Bow, high speed workboat, 16 metres in length. This is available

configured as a crew boat, a patrol boat or a pilot boat. Given that these three classes have quite different operating requirements, they share only the hull and certain parts of the onboard machinery. While all three have waterjet propulsion, for example, each requires a distinct engine rating. Above deck, everything is quite different. Three individual deckhouses have been developed to ensure that each class is optimised for its specific role. Visitors to Seawork will be able to view, and experience, the Pilot version of the 1605. Alongside it will be the more conventional composite Stan Pilot 1505. Observers with sharp eyes will note that while the two vessels are quite different in many aspects, they have been designed so that they use the same deckhouse structure. Two of the 1605 crew boats are now in operation; one with Van Oord in the Caspian Sea and a second has since been delivered by Damen to the Sharjah Ports Authority in the United Arab Emirates. Composite vessels are particularly popular in the Middle East as operators are used to the materials and are familiar with the benefits they offer. Composite construction is becoming more widespread across the workboat sector as operators see the benefits for themselves and improved production techniques bring down the costs. Damen is determined to be at the forefront of this exciting technology for the foreseeable future.

Damen has begun work on the third of a new series of tug, the ART (Advanced Rotortug®) 80-32. It will be used to support the Royal Navy’s new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers, the first of which is due for launch next year. Serco Marine Services has ordered the vessel as part of its contract to deliver support to the UK’s Ministry of Defence (UK MoD) and it will be the first of its type to fly the UK Flag. Optimal performance across a range of sailing profiles The patented RotorTug® propulsion configuration consists of three, diesel-driven azimuthing thrusters of which two units are mounted on the forward part of the ship and the third is positioned near the stern. This propulsion configuration delivers 100% bollard pull (80 tonnes) over both the bow and the stern, and 65% bollard pull sideways. The vessel is also highly manoeuvrable and benefits from a fully redundant and precise machinery configuration. Serco has specified a number of modifications to the Robert Allan Ltd design to enable her to support the huge aircraft carriers. These include a double drum render/recovery aft winch for redundancy and a foldable mast for safe working under the flight deck overhang. The ART 80-32 was originally developed in cooperation with leading towage company KOTUG, and they now operate two of this class; the RT Evolution and RT Emotion. In 2015 KOTUG received the KVNR Shipping Award for these innovative vessels.

Serco Marine Services operates and manages 120 vessels out of eight locations around the UK, delivering services to the UK MoD and other government agencies. The company is the UK’s largest operator of British flagged vessels and on delivery of the ART 80-32 it will have 31 Damen vessels in its fleet. In common with other tugs that it has supplied to the Royal Navy, Damen is fitting the 32.9-metre long tug with grey fendering to match the livery of Royal Navy vessels. This prevents their hulls getting marked when contact is made. Controllable pitch propellers (CPP) will also be fitted instead of the usual fixed pitch propellers found on other ART 80-32 vessels. Serco and Damen have a close relationship. In 2010 Damen delivered the final unit in a 29-vessel order for the UK-based company. The contract covered a wide variety of vessels of 15 different designs, including pilot boats, tugs, barges, multi-purpose work boats, a fast crew supplier and a worldwide support vessel. In May 2015, Serco then took delivery of their thirtieth Damen new-build, the SD Angeline, a Multi Cat 2613S. With this most recent contract there were significant challenges that Damen had to meet with respect to vessel power, manoeuvrability, customisation and delivery time, but once again it rose to the challenge. Damen is very proud to be supplying a tug that will play a vital role in supporting the biggest warships that the UK has ever built.

TWO FRP STAN PILOTS 1605 FOR FUGRO Fugro Subsea LLC, a subsidiary of leading geotechnical, survey and subsea services provider Fugro NV, has just taken delivery of two Stan Pilots 1605 in Qatar. On the first of August the twin vessels will begin a five-year contract with Qatar Petroleum operating out of the Ports of Ras Laffan and Mesaieed. Their primary role will be port and terminal maintenance using a fully compliant IMCA dive team. The vessels will be used for maintenance, repair and cleaning operations on the subsea and floating assets and facilities of Qatar Petroleum. To accomplish Fugro Subsea’s mission, each pilot boat has been fitted with a dedicated dive station in the deck house, while the stern has been equipped with a lowered diving platform, dedicated ladder and emergency recovery davit. Other items of diving equipment are safely secured and stored on the main deck including umbilical racks and diving helmet storage.

Fugro placed the order for the Stan Pilots 1605 in December 2015 and assembly and fit-out of the vessels started in January. With other yards quoting delivery times of around a year, Damen’s ability to deliver in just four months was a significant factor in Fugro’s decision to select Damen. So was the proven design, which allowed Fugro representatives to experience the design for themselves in a range of conditions as part of their assess-ment process. The short delivery time is the direct result of building on speculation and of the composite construction process, using fibre reinforced polymer. As well having the benefits of low maintenance and reduced fuel consumption, the use of composite materials also allows for series production at Damen Shipyards Antalya, the group’s specialist composite yard. With hulls and superstructures in continuous build, when an order comes in the major components are available for immediate assembly and fitting out can begin within days. This build technique is cost effective, and contributes to the vessels’ excellent resale value.

Other factors that were in the Damen FCS 1605s’ favour included Damen’s patented Sea Axe bow design with its excellent seakeeping abilities. This has the advantage of helping ensure that the divers on board arrive at their work zone in top condition so that they can proceed with the dive. Sea sickness en route can result in the day’s work being cancelled, costing both time and money. With respect to the area where the vessels will be operating, the client can also be assured of rapid and high quality support for repair and maintenance with a Damen Service Hub not far away at Sharjah in the UAE. From there Damen engineers both local and Dutch can be dispatched at short notice with a full range of spare parts and experience to ensure minimum downtime. Fugro is a longstanding client of the Damen Shipyards Group. Its most recent purchase prior to the Stan Pilots 1605 was three Offshore Coastal Survey Vessels. Built to Fugro’s own designs in good cooperation with Damen Shipyards, each is 53 metres in length and fully equipped for the full range of survey tasks in shallow to medium depths.

THE MULTI-MISSION RHIB 1050 WHEN SPEED IS OF THE ESSENCE Damen has a long track-record of building fast patrol boats for the full range of government and commercial applications, from seven metre rigid hull inflatables to 60 metre offshore patrol vessels. The latest model in this ever-evolving family is the rigid hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) 1050, representing the next generation of this class. 10.5 metres in length and with a beam of 3.35 metres, the RHIB 1050 is the perfect multipurpose craft for a wide range of roles. Large enough to take 10 men and their equipment, it is ideal for short range crew transfer, safety patrols and any kind of task that requires a fast response time. They also make superb fast auxiliary craft when installed on larger vessels. Designed from the ground up, Damen applied its own experience and customer input to optimise the onboard ergonomics. The controls are carefully positioned relative to the helmsman’s chair, the boat is easy to enter and exit safely and quickly, and there is an emphasis on the efficient use of space. Additional features include a flattened nose for easy boarding of other vessels, hoisting eyes integrated into the bollards, and grips strategically located throughout the boat.

Developed at Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld and built at Damen’s specialist composite works in Antalya, Turkey, the hull of the RHIB 1050 is Lloyds approved. The vacuum-infused hull is made from glass reinforced epoxy with a closed cell, foam core to ensure strength without excess weight. The tough, durable tubing is D-shaped rather than the more usual O-shape, which gives extra space within the boat and allows the console and engine compartment to be combined into a single, space saving unit. The RHIB 1050 is built as a standard hull and then outfitted to the specification of each customer. A typical layout is up to 10, deckmounted, suspension seats positioned above two 350 litre fuel tanks feeding twin 370 hp Volvo Penta inboard engines. For those customers seeking the convenience and performance of an outboard version, that is also available with twin outboards from 300 to 400 hp each. Both versions are easy to maintain thanks to their high quality materials. The mechanical and electronical systems are well protected from water and the rough and tumble of high speed manoeuvring in rough seas.
