Low Income Energy Assistance Program (L.I.E.A.P.) LIEAP is a state and federallyfunded program that helps people pay home heating bills November through June. It helps cover the costs of electricity, natural gas, propane, wood, diesel heating oil, coal and pellets when these are used for heating a home.

Applications are available at the Senior Center.

HOME CARE CORNER– A Client’s story Among the many clients we have under our home care services, there was a delightful client of great age who had been a long time client of homecare. While maybe not a Wyoming native, the ties to the community were very strong as the majority of life had been spent in the state. When services were initiated in 2009, the client wound well past 90 years old but only needed help with shopping. As the year winded down so did our friend’s health and additional services were introduced. In 2010 there was a lengthy hospitalization but the client eventually returned home. There was now a greater need; personal care was introduced and housekeeping was increased. As the years increased our friend’s health needs did too and eventually we were seeing them 5 times a week. There were intermittent hospitalizations and a few stays in the nursing home but ultimately our friend was able to return home and stayed there until just weeks before passing away. Without home care services and caring staff, this client would have had no option but to enter long term care. This very satisfactory outcome was a community effort involving many of the services available to the aging population and is by no means unique. We are here to help. For more info on home care services please contact MaryAnn Hill at the Senior Center 733-7300.

When it comes to almonds, the most nutrient-dense of all nuts, ounce for ounce, a little can go a long way. A one-ounce serving of almonds (about 23 nuts) is an excellent source of vitamin E and magnesium, a good source of protein and fiber, plus almonds offer potassium, calcium, phosphorous, iron and monounsaturated fat giving you a lot of nutritional bang for only 160 calories. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that helps protect cells from everyday damage, and magnesium helps keep bones strong. Fiber is beneficial for the digestive system and heart health. Protein is an important building block of bones, hair, nails, muscles and skin and repairs tissue. The monounsaturated fats in almonds are the "good fats" that may lower cholesterol and keep your heart healthy. According to research from the University of Toronto, eating a specific combination of heart healthy foods can help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels as much as cholesterol lowering drugs. Further studies have shown that almonds, as part of a healthy lifestyle, can help you maintain a healthy cholesterol level without causing weight gain. Purdue University and Queens University Belfast asked people to add two-ounces of almonds to their daily diet. After only ten weeks, the subjects did not gain weight or increase body fat, but they did increase their intake of vitamin E and magnesium, showing that almonds can enhance the diet and contribute to overall health. Almonds can also help manage blood sugar and insulin levels, which are most often connected to feelings of hunger. Experts think that the fiber, protein and crunch of almonds are satisfying and help people feel full longer. It's important to be aware of the portion size when eating almonds... as it is easy to just mindlessly keep popping them into your mouth. A serving size is about 23 nuts, or a handful, or a 1/4 measuring cup, or an empty mints tin, or two wells in an ice cube tray. When you hike, bike, or travel take Almonds along with you. They are a very portable snack: easy to pack and requiring no refrigeration. A recent perusal at local grocery stores found many flavors and package sizes of these delicious morsels, so enjoy “going nuts” for your health.

~Recipe of the Month~ Cranberry-Almond Chicken Salad 

2/3 cup slivered almonds

3 cups chopped cooked chicken

3/4 cup sweetened dried cranberries

2 celery ribs, diced

1/2 small sweet onion, diced

3/4 cup mayonnaise

1 tablespoon Greek seasoning

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Enjoy!

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Bake almonds in a single layer in a shallow pan 5 to 7 minutes or until lightly toasted and fragrant. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack (about 15 minutes). 2. Stir together almonds, chicken, dried cranberries, and remaining ingredients; serve immediately, or cover and chill up to 24 hours. Artichoke-Pecan Chicken Salad: Substitute 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans for almonds and 1 (14-oz.) can artichoke hearts for cranberries. Drain artichokes, and pat dry with paper towels. Coarsely chop artichokes. Proceed with recipe as directed.
