Aberdeen is Europe’s energy industry capital. Because of the local oil & gas industry in Aberdeen, there are many opportunities for professionals who work in these industries. IH Aberdeen offers a unique opportunity to improve your English and gain professional language skills within this sector. IH Aberdeen offers a specialist 4 week (30 hours per week) intensive programme of technical English training for oil and gas professionals. The programmes are designed in collaboration with CARFAX (www.carfax-education.com), an established international technical and specialist English Training company. All courses offer in-depth English-language training with a highly technical and specific focus. The courses will utilise local industry experts and trainers. This programme is ideal for:   

oil and gas industry professionals who wish to improve their technical English professionals wishing to enter the lucrative oil and gas industry job market in Aberdeen; Students preparing for university study at one of Aberdeen’s prestigious universities, both of which offer a wide range of oil-industry related degree options.

Our courses focus equally on developing your practical English skills and on your subject knowledge in the petroleum and oil and gas industry. The courses will include training to develop:   

Skills – practical English language communication skills. Knowledge – a strong knowledge of relevant language and technical vocabulary. Strategies – developing abilities to learn independently, and further understanding on an ongoing basis.

Each 4 week course will comprise: 

IH Aberdeen’s General English course will help you improve every aspect of your language, which will benefit you in your career and beyond. The General English course is 3 hours each morning, taught by IH Aberdeen’s highly qualified and experienced teaching staff. 

Vocabulary and idioms – at IH Aberdeen you can benefit from a lexical approach to learning. You will learn useful phrases and enjoy lots of collocation practice, so your English will sound more natural and up to date



Pronunciation – we place great emphasis on improving your accent, teaching you about intonation and word/sentence stress in English, all of which helps to increase your fluency and make your English more natural and easy to understand



Writing skills – from informal emails to technical report writing, we can help you make significant progress in all aspects of your writing



Listening comprehension – we use a wide variety of authentic listening materials, including music, film and the internet to help you improve your listening skills



Reading comprehension – we give you techniques to develop your ability to read whatever you want in English, for example, technical publications, academic papers newspapers, magazines, or novels



Grammar – Last but not least! Your English will be more correct and as a result easier to understand

Your highly experienced IH Aberdeen English language teachers engage with each student individually and ensure your needs are understood and met. Your teachers can advise you how best to use your time outside class to help you to further develop your language skills. Students are tested every two weeks in class and benefit from individual academic tutorials with senior teaching staff on average once per month. You can also enjoy our fun social programme, which allows you to mix with all staff and students from around the world in a relaxed and friendly environment. The events are fun and varied: from a cup coffee at the local cafe, to visits to some of Scotland’s most beautiful places.

This course will cover different themes relating to the language of oil and gas enterprise management and provides you with the language skills and tools you need to be successful in the English-speaking world.

You will be given the opportunity to select a topic relevant to oil and gas enterprise management for presentation to the rest of the class on the final two days of the course. This allows you to utilise the language and presentation skills you have learned over the four weeks of the programme. The themes covered will include:       

The language of business and finance; The language of organizational management; The language of contracts and negotiations; Technical language of oil and gas engineering and exploration; The language of regulatory and risk assessment; Practical exercises; and A final examination.

The final week of the programme will involve practical exercises, using of the language you have learned throughout the course. Exercises are designed to simulate business situations in the oil and gas industry as closely as possible. The intention is to challenge both the language and professional skills of students. Activities will include:   

Deal and contract negotiations; Stakeholder management exercises; Geopolitical risk analyses, and mitigation strategy creation; and more.

On the final day of the course there will be a final, exam, covering all topics taught in the course. The exam will include writing, listening, and oral sections. On completing the examination, you will be awarded IH Aberdeen’s Oil and Gas Business Management Language Certificate, showing you final examination score, and detailed feedback from your course tutor.

Our courses don’t only provide the opportunity for you to improve English grammar and vocabulary, but also give you an opportunity to gain real-world skills in English. With lots of student participation, you can learn the English-language as it is – not just grammar and vocabulary, but as a living, dynamic language.

Interactive learning and pair activities allow you to apply what you have learnt, and to develop confidence in your language abilities. This also provides an opportunity for you to learn from mistakes. Collaborative learning provides a more enjoyable and engaging environment for participants than a traditional teachercentred approach.

Role play learning activities are designed to model real-world situations. You will improve your English, and ensure that you have the skills needed to communicate effectively and achieve the programme goals in the English language.

There are lots of opportunities for on-going feedback between the teacher and the student. This means that you will receive regular feedback on your progress. It also ensures that you have the opportunity to let teachers know how they are doing, and provides opportunities for the teacher to improve classes to meet your individual needs and requests.

Smaller group sizes offer the added benefit of more time and attention given to individuals, allowing for faster improvement, and better engagement with the course and materials. As such, classes will not exceed enrollment of 15 students.
