VIII. The Weeping Women

Mary’s friends see her approaching alongside the Cross carried by her Son. “Mary! Jesus!” they wail, they scream… Jesus halts his procession for a brief moment as He waits for His Mother to speak with her kumoszki… “How can we help? Your baby looks horrible!! You are both in such pain!!!??” Jesus looks at his mother...she’s trying her best to let her friends know it’s all going to be okay...she fights back her tears and then, glancing once more at her Son, she breaks down! Jesus holds her up with his free hand, and puts her on his knee...the pieta in reverse...as he tries to wipe away her tears. Her lady friends all huddle around the two of them as they listen to Jesus quietly sing what resembles the same lullaby which Mary sang to him so many times...But they both know that the procession must go on….The ladies help up Jesus and Mary… Together they all praise God in a short prayer...The procession moves on… The weeping women continue to weep. One is 8 months pregnant. One just had an abortion. One has arthritis and can barely straighten up. One will soon die from cancer. One will go look for a rock of crack. One will run to tell her boyfriend. One will go buy groceries to prepare supper. One will go to the temple and pray. They will all go to sleep thinking of Jesus... and their kumoszka, David Krakowski

PASTORAL MESSAGE “VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING… …while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb.” Thus begins the resurrection account in the Gospel of John. As we read the above lines, we might wonder: Who in their right mind would get up so early in the morn ing and walk in the dark, especially when conditions were so dangerous? The disciples were all still afraid, perhaps for their own skin, because of what had happened to Jesus. Would they be next? Who is waiting around the corner to nab them, and do them harm? Why would anyone take such a risk? To be with Jesus. Then we might ask, who in their right mind would do that today? Who would get up early in the morning, while it is still dark, just to spend time with Jesus? Charlotte Kotek would. She does every day. She lives only a couple blocks away, but no matter what the weather is doing outside, she walks to church each and every morning by 5:30 or so. She opens the doors, changes the burned-out candles, gets the sanctuary ready for Mass, and then says her private prayers in the quiet of our shrine, alone with Jesus. She is the regular server at the 7:00 AM Mass, paying very close attention to all the details as well as to the idiosyncrasies of each priest. Then she moves on to visit the homes of several homebound people who depend on her to Charlotte Kotek care for them in their daily personal and household needs. She would be embarrassed to see her age in print for all to see, but let’s just say it’s been a while since her teenage years... After Jesus lay in the tomb for three days, it was the women who were the first ones to encounter the Risen Lord. The women were the ones who thought of bringing oils and spices to anoint Jesus’ body. It was the women who saw the angel and heard his astonishing words. It was the women who were the first evangelizers, the first to carry the good news to others that Jesus is risen. In her prayerful witness and care-filled attentiveness to those in need, our own Charlotte Kotek continues to proclaim what was first announced two thousand years ago. “He is risen!” Have you ever wondered how certain things get done around here, and who exactly does them? Our church community is blessed with many people who give such simple and consistent witness of prayer and service. They don’t seek praise or recognition. They open and close the church, pick up the leftover bulletins, sweep and mop and dust, keep the sacristy in order, turn off the lights when we are done, dust the snow off the steps and ramp, sweep the leaves away in the fall, clear away the wilted flowers — on and on. So many humble and important things, all accompanied with the whisper of a prayer. They hold a special and honored place in our community, and we are grateful to them for their faithful witness. Fr. Michael

APRIL 30 KWIETNIA 2006 Jezu, ufam Tobie! W ostatnia niedziele, w czasie poludniowej modlitwy „Regina Coeli” przypomnial Ojciec swiety Benedykt XVI zas lugi swego poprzednika Jana Pawla II w szerzeniu kultu Bozego Milosierdzia. To wlasnie nasz Rodak ustanowil druga niedziele wielkanocna - Niedziela Bozego Milosierdzia. Stalo sie to dokladnie przed szesciu laty, 30 kwietnia 2000 roku. Bylo to z okazji kanonizacji blogoslawionej siostry Faustyny. Slusznie zostala ona nazwana „apostolka Bozego Milosierdzia”. Cale jej zycie bylo poswiecone szerzeniu tego kultu. Pan Jezus sam ja pouczal w licznych objawieniach. Chwala Panu! Trzeba wiec nam wolanie Kosciola : „Przyjdz, Panie Jezu” polaczyc z aktem strzelistym: „Jezu, ufam Tobie”. o. Placyd Kon
