Fulton Schools provides experiential opportunities because you need more than traditional coursework. One of our top priorities is providing a customized experience. You really can create a unique experience—from undergraduate research to competitive teams to entrepreneurship—that is the foundation for your success.

Customize your experience engineering.asu.edu/customize Fulton Schools and Barrett Honors Many Fulton Schools undergraduate students are part of the unique community at Barrett, The Honors College. Honors students enjoy select opportunities to travel abroad, earn scholarships, attend special events specifically for honors students, and receive funding to travel and complete their creative projects/theses. Students have the opportunity to stretch their learning capabilities through a customized honors curriculum.

Grand Challenge Scholars Program Grand Challenge Scholars receive the well-rounded preparation needed to tackle complex social issues in areas of health, energy, sustainability, security and education. Students admitted to the Grand Challenge Scholars Program combine experiences in research, service learning, entrepreneurship and leadership with the development of a global perspective and interdisciplinary thinking. Grand Challenge Scholars receive a unique endorsement from the National Academy of Engineering upon completion of the program.

EPICS: Engineering Projects in Community Service The Engineering Projects in Community Service program, known as EPICS@ASU, is an award-winning community service and social entrepreneurship program. Through EPICS, you have the opportunity to get a hands-on approach to problem solving while making an impact in the community. You will enter the workforce with the ability to design innovative solutions to meet clients’ needs in a dynamic environment.

Student organizations and teams If you are interested in fun, leadership, outreach, career growth and networking opportunities, you should check out opportunities with the more than 60 student organizations and teams in the Fulton Schools of Engineering. There are honors and professional societies, diversity organizations, service and major-specific groups, and competitive teams that provide ample opportunities for you to find a group that suits your needs, whether it is gaining hands-on experience working on a team or socializing with peers who share the same passion.

Student Council The Fulton Schools of Engineering Student Council serves as an umbrella group for all Fulton Engineering student organizations registered with the Fulton Schools. Student Council members have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, understand organizational structures, network with Fulton Schools faculty and staff, and serve as a conduit for communication between students, student organizations and the dean to help shape the future of the college.

Accelerated bachelor’s + master’s programs Accelerated programs offer exceptional students in the Fulton Schools the opportunity to combine advanced undergraduate coursework with graduate coursework to earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in as little as five years. engineering.asu.edu

Outreach Work with other outreach programs such as DiscoverE Day, our Fulton Schools open house, FIRST LEGO League, Epics High mentor, and more to promote science, technology, engineering and math in the community and engage younger students in the excitement of what we do every day. This is a chance to gain valuable mentoring skills, volunteer experience and inspire others to pursue studies or careers in engineering and technology.

Academic Bowl The Academic Bowl pits teams from ASU’s colleges and schools against each other in lightning-fast question-and-answer rounds. Questions can cover any topic—from world politics and pop culture, to history and geography, to world literature. If you have a passion for learning, possess a wide range of knowledge about various (possibly obscure) topics, and can quickly hit a buzzer, consider trying out for the team. Not only will you have a blast firing off answers in a fast-paced event, but you also have a chance to win scholarship money and the coveted championship title.

FURI: Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative As a FURI researcher you will solve real-world problems, investigate possible career paths, build a mentoring relationship with a faculty member outside of class, gain a competitive advantage for graduate school or jobs and internships, and gain essential skills for career success. Through this paid research opportunity, you will conduct research with a faculty mentor and present your research findings at a semiannual FURI Symposium. FURI allows you to experience every step of a research project from the initial proposal for funding to the final presentation of your accomplishments and hard work.

Fulton Ambassadors Fulton Ambassadors are a select group of students who support the Fulton Schools as representatives at recruitment events with prospective students and outreach activities. In addition to developing professional and leadership skills, as a Fulton Ambassador, you will also receive a letter of recommendation from the dean.

eProjects program and Capstones Through capstone projects and the eProjects program, you will work on a student team to solve a challenge defined by an industry partner. Faculty and industry mentors will offer guidance and support throughout your team’s project development process. Project results are then presented at the end of each semester, for industry partners and the public to attend.

Summer camp counselors Each summer, we host a number of summer camps designed to engage K-12 students in science, technology, engineering and math-related activities. From robotics to mobile application creation, our goal is to share the excitement of engineering and technology with aspiring future problem solvers.

Study Abroad Experience a new culture, learn methods used outside the United States, become competitive in a global job market and see the world in a new way. Visiting a different country is a valuable opportunity to expand your world views and gather insight and inspiration from a different perspective. From exchange and partnership programs, to faculty-directed summer programs, the study abroad experience will enhance your understanding of engineering concepts, global business perspectives, world issues and societies.

Career Fair Volunteer/Employer Liaison

Order of the Engineer

As a volunteer at one of the Fulton Schools career fairs, you will be able to network with recruiting managers and learn more about positions available with their companies. Another way to get involved is through student organizations as an employer relations representative working directly with employers, honing your business communications, customer service and event planning skills.

Order of the Engineer is an association that emphasizes integrity, pride and responsibility in the engineering profession. Graduating seniors in ABET-accredited engineering programs make a commitment to these ideals and receive a ring symbolizing this commitment.

Internships and Cooperative Education Program

The Fulton Leadership Institute is designed for emerging leaders who want to enhance their leadership experience within the Fulton Schools of Engineering through curricular, co-curricular and mentorship opportunities focused on leadership building and enhancement. Students interested in joining the institute will enroll in FSE 194 Exploring Leadership Potential (1 credit hour).

Gain practical work experience related to your major through experiential learning programs offered by our industry partners in conjunction with the Fulton Schools and our Career Center. Internships are usually one summer of supervised work experience related to your chosen career field. The Cooperative Education Program (co-op) is a longer time commitment of a consecutive spring-summer OR summer-fall term of major-related practical work experience, thereby helping students make the school-to-work transition. These opportunities foster professional, personal and skill development, and are usually paid.

E2 Camp Counselors (E2C2s)

Fulton Leadership Institute

Fulton Diversity Initiatives Join the diverse Fulton Engineering community through Heritage Month events, a speaker series, and professional development programming to increase awareness, celebrate diversity and build community.

E2 is an innovative program that welcomes all freshmen to our Fulton Schools community. Upper-division students serve as counselors for this fun, multiday, off-campus program. E2C2s help incoming students learn skills that are important to their success in the Fulton Schools through a variety of fun and interactive activities.

Tutoring Tutors are undergraduate and graduate students employed to help you with your math, science, and engineering classes. Newly remodeled locations offer free tutoring for your homework needs. ASU also offers tutoring online and in your residential hall.

Peer Mentors

All freshmen—whether living in one of our residential communities, commuting to campus, or enrolled in our online programs—are assigned a peer mentor who provides referrals to academic resources across campus, hosts events to ensure new students feel connected to the Fulton Schools, and guides freshmen through the transition to ASU.

Peer Career Coaches Peer Career Coaches are trained to help other students explore career options in their major through one-on-one meetings and by facilitating workshops that will help prepare students for a future in engineering and technology. These upperdivision students help navigate the career-related experiences available to first-year students and connect you to resources for internships, jobs and career events.

Undergraduate Teaching Assistants

The Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UGTA) program selects successful undergraduate students to serve as teaching assistants in Fulton Schools classes. UGTAs assist faculty members by leading, engaging and mentoring students in exploratory and collaborative learning activities within the classroom and lab environment.

Fulton Engineering Startup Center

The Fulton Engineering Startup Center empowers all Fulton Schools students to achieve their entrepreneurial ideas for the benefit of our economy and society. The Startup Center offers signature entrepreneurship and innovation courses, workshops, expert mentoring, new venture competitions and other curricular and extracurricular events that expose students to the concepts of technology innovation and marketplace impact.

We take a personal stake in your success and celebrate the many ways you are making an impact. Here are some recent success stories from within the Fulton Schools:

GIT student honored by Education Malaysia Hayda Abu Hasan, a senior majoring in graphic information technology at the Polytechnic School, was awarded a Perdana Scholar Award by Education Malaysia, which works with the Malaysian Embassy to promote higher education programs. The award recognizes Malaysian scholars in the U.S. who are doing undergraduate and postgraduate work and excelling in academics, leadership, sports, entrepreneurship, inventions and research.

Fulton Schools Maroon Team wins 2014 ASU Academic Bowl The Fulton Schools Maroon team won ASU’s 2014 Academic Bowl, taking home the grand prize of $24,000 in scholarships. Team members included Wesley Fullmer and Prad Kadambi, electrical engineering majors; Rohan Murty, a chemical engineering major; Daniel Martin, a computer systems engineering major; and Matthew Askins, an aerospace engineering major.

Freshman named Future Innovator of the Year

Sarah Galvin, a freshman electrical engineering student, was presented one of four Future Innovators of the Year Awards at the Governor’s Celebration of Innovation in Arizona. The award recognizes Galvin’s research, which involves experimentation with using combinations of various materials to make devices that could help pave the way for the next generation of electronics. The project also earned her a first-place prize in the electrical and mechanical engineering category in the Intel International Science and Technology Fair for high school students.

Students place first in international supercomputing competition A team of ASU undergraduate students brought home a first-place award from the Supercomputing 2013 (SC13) Student Cluster Competition. The competition required students to work nearly nonstop over a 48-hour period to assemble and test a small computing cluster—a group of tethered computers that can perform a series of applications. The team included Clint Shuman, a computer science major; Gabe Martin, a computer systems engineering student; Ben Prather, a physics major; and Christian Ivaneok, an informatics major.

Students win prestigious fellowship in 2014, 2015 Five talented students were selected for a prestigious Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado. Miranda Ngan, Osama Khalil and Joe Carpenter are chemical engineering students, and Sichun Ai and Jacob Ward are computer science students. Ward and Saumya Gupta have been awarded the fellowship for 2015. engineering.asu.edu

Students invited to Fulbright summer institute Two Fulton Schools students have been invited to the Fulbright Summer Institute-one of the most prestigious and selective summer programs operating worldwide. Kaleigh Johnson, a chemical engineering junior, and Brandon Dorr, a biomedical engineering sophomore will be traveling to the United Kingdom for four weeks to live and study at leading institutions.

Materials students finish among leaders in geodesic dome competition Two teams of ASU materials science and engineering majors finished among the leaders in a student geodesic dome-building competition at the national Materials Science & Technology conference. The ASU Iron Lotus team—juniors Michael Moorehead and Nathan Rodkey—placed third overall, winning a $500 prize. The ASU Golden Dome team placed fourth in the maximum load category, based on how much weight dome structures could bear before yielding. The team—the youngest group of competitors at the event—included freshmen Hassan Al Mousa, Jacob Kintz, Ayan Rafique, Chris Nelson and Alex Crawley.

Renewable energy research earns graduate fellowship Andrey Gunawan has earned research support through the prestigious Summer Fellowship program of The Electrochemical Society (ECS), an honor received by no more than five graduate students worldwide each year. Gunawan, who is pursuing his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering at ASU, will receive $5,000 to aid his work in renewable and alternative energy.

ASU team’s robot driver in top 10 at Cornell Cup A student team from the Fulton Schools, which taught a robot to drive an electric car, placed in the top 10 of 34 finalists at the Cornell Cup USA, an embedded technology competition presented by Intel. The annual competition, designed to encourage students to use embedded technology, provided teams with Intel development boards featuring Atom processors. ASU’s six-member team was led by Sami Mian, and included Joe Boeding, Ryan Sterry, Mila Arezina, Cameron Stewart and Bijan Fakhri, all seniors in computer systems engineering.

Student awarded Goldwater Scholarship Morgan Kelley, a chemical engineering student, was awarded a Goldwater Scholarship—the nation’s premier award for undergraduates studying science, math and engineering. The scholarship provides $7,500 a year for up to two years. Kelley is in ASU’s Barrett, The Honors College, and participates in the Grand Challenge Scholars Program. Her EPICS team, Fiji Lights, has developed and delivered portable technologies to provide nighttime lighting to students in Fiji and Uganda, places where electrical power is limited and unreliable.

Teams shine in construction management competition Three of the nine teams from the Del E. Webb School of Construction earned third place in their categories in the Reno Competition, the largest construction management competition in the United States. Members of the design build team included Russell Wisniewski, Isaac Bates, Jesse Pruitt, Evan Sherwood, Erika White, and Cole Woodward.

Kenya project earns students national award

ASU’s student chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) was a winner of a 2014 Premier Project Award—one of only three nationally—from the national EWB-USA organization. The chapter was recognized for its work to design and construct sustainable water infrastructure in a rural community in Kenya. About 25 students were involved the project, but since it began as many as 50 students have participated in some way, said Brittany Duong, former chapter president and biomedical engineering alumna.

Students earn first place in Intel Cup Competition in China A team of engineering students took first place in the 2014 Embedded System Design Invitational Contest, a part of the Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest held in Shanghai. Two teams worked together to create a robot that students can use to learn programming skills. Members of the software team included David Humphries, Garth Bjerk, Ian Plumley, Nathanael Stout and Tracey Heath, all computer science majors. The hardware team included Corey Jallen, Matthew Recchia, Randy Queen, Rizwan Ahmad and Stephen Pluta, all computer systems engineering majors.

Team earns 10th place award despite collision An off-road vehicle built by the Polytechnic SAE Baja team, also known as Sun Devil Racing Development, finished 10th overall despite a collision and on-the-spot repairs during the four-hour race at this year’s Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) race in Mechanicsville, Maryland. The competition brought together 105 teams from across the country. Customize your experience

Career planning starts day one Starting with the freshman Career Exploration Night, planning for your career is so much more than creating a résumé. Every semester, from freshman year through your senior year, we can show you how getting involved early in clubs/organizations, research and class projects can make you a more competitive candidate. The Fulton Schools Career Center can help you hone your job search strategy to find summer internships, co-ops, and other opportunities that will help you build your future career.

Develop your personal brand The Fulton Schools Career Center is designed to be your personal resource for turning all of your Fulton experiences into your unique brand. We can answer questions about how to maximize your college experience and connect you with professionals from various industries and fields. We can show you how to find experiences, internships and co-ops to get real-world work and possibly to earn academic credit. We can help transition your résumé into a distinguished professional internship or new grad résumé that shows what you have to offer a company. We will show you how to present yourself at interviews, career fairs and networking events.

Internships and Co-op program Students often gain major-related experience as interns over summer and many programs offer academic credit. Cooperative education is a structured method of complementing classroom education with paid professional work experience. Cooperative education provides academic credit for structured job experience and will help you make the school-to-work transition. Co-ops are available starting your sophomore or junior year. You will work fulltime in your chosen field for a continuous summer-fall or springsummer term and still be on track to graduate in four to five years.

Company information sessions and competitions Companies visit ASU throughout the academic year, but especially around Career Fairs to talk to Fulton students about opportunities and current projects. They also offer timely technical talks and sponsor exciting competitions. You can learn firsthand about your options as you make a positive impression on companies. Career Fair Attend the Fulton Schools Career Fairs in February and October, and network with industry professionals. Company representatives come to ASU to meet the next generation of professionals. You may even be invited to interview on campus with multiple employers.
