A N Z A C —Maketu Dawn Commemorations ns April 25th 2016. We woke to a still, calm morning with a hint of a chill in the air. People were busy setting up seating, equipment, and finishing last minute preparations for the commemorations. Whilst this activity was happening many were at home making sure their suits and uniforms were pressed and ready, medals were polished, shoes were shining and generally getting ready and dressed This year we saw a change to our commemorations.. We did not have the march , but we had our commemorative service and remembrance at the Rock (Commemorative Rock) in the park. Our first full service to be held there. It was a poignant time , to see the rock in between the flags flying in the breeze, with the sound and smell of the sea in the background and the first rays of light coming over the hill and across the sea. Fitting for dawn service. Another poignant moment was to have a choir singing in the background in Maori whilst the wreaths and poppies were being laid. It was good to see, as with the rest of the country people of all ages, colours and walks of life come to remember and give thanks and to share breakfast at Whakaue Marae. Although we had some first moments, we must give a huge thanks and appreciation to the out going Anzac committee, as they announced their retirement from the position. We all offer our heart felt thanks and appreciation to them for all the work and service they have given to us all over the years. Thank-you. So like the changing of the guards we will have a new Anzac Committee next year. They shall be remembered

TAIAPURE Inanga Spawning on the Kaituna River – 2016

At the By de Ley Wetland, aka The Borrow Pits, approximately 2 km upriver from The Cut. This is a wetland enhancement project aimed at providing rearing habitat for inanga, which is the species supplying the bulk of our whitebait catch. Initiated by the Maketu Taiapure Trust, in 2002, the project has received considerable assistance from Te Arawa, regional and district councils, and volunteer community labour. Many thanks to all and especially Henry and Maria By de Ley. Inanga spawning was observed on 12th March 2016 at two sites. The arrow in the middle of the above photo points to one of the main channels into the pond system adjacent to where a side channel diverts to E2 pond. This is the same area as spawning was recorded in 2014. This channel and its use as an inanga spawning area have been known for a long time. More closely observed this year is the lefthand arrow. This points to the channel between the river and NSP5 which is connected NSP4 (New Small Pond). As the name says, this is constructed habitat to provide a rearing kāinga for inanga (and other fish) and this is the first time that spawning has been observed here since the ponds were excavated in 2011. Large and small groups of inanga were arriving from the river, flowing in ever-bigger groups backwards and forwards, between the river and the pond, a distance of about 20 metres. Groups would disappear into the vegetation and “spattering” could be heard and the visible cloud of milt increased and expanded. Large and small groups flowed in and out of the areas.. All fish observed post-spawning looked none the worse for the experience and none showed any likelihood of instant mortality. On the 13th March the activity was repeated Conclusion: Constructed habitat can provide rearing habitat from whitebait to mature adult and provide those adults with suitable conditions for spawning, thus enhancing the whitebait and therefore many other fisheries. COMMUNITY MEETING FOR THE COMMUNITY HUB. Monday 10th May, 7pm at the Fire Station. This could well be your last chance to progress the hub. It was originally under Whanaungatanga, in the 2006 Community Plan, that Maketu wanted a multi-purpose hub and when we reviewed the plan in 2014 The Hub was again the priority. There is now money available for a feasibility study through the Community Board. The Board and Council want a commitment from Maketu before they will release this money. This meeting is not to rehash the why’s and wherefores of a hub but to form an enthusiastic steering committee to drive the project, liaise with the person doing the feasibility study or, maybe, do the study. If nothing comes of this meeting, I’m sure that the project will be shelved. We need your input. Trevor Hughes Chair, Maketu Projects Team.

TE RUNANGA O NGATI WHAKAUE A Healthy Whare Project Insulation for Maketu whanau is still available. Its coming to winter so if you have no insulation in your home or rental house give me a ring. An assessment wont cost you anything and there are options available that can help you get your home insulated at zero cost. The Runanga has been carrying this project since 2014 and each time we say we have no more money our project team that is made up of various organisations manages to source some more putea. So don’t delay ring Maria 027 2910737. Komiti Nui (KN) o Ngati Whakaue Update Maria Horne is the newly mandated KN Trustee to address the Maketu treaty claims. She has attended two trustee hui and one workshop. Tabled was a strategic plan on the historical issues for Ngati Whakaue ki Maketu claims. Any progress is dependent on the Crown response to issues and concerns raised by the negotiators on behalf of KN. WBOPDC - Partnerships The Western Bay of Plenty Maori Form was disestablished in 2014. In its place are two forums the Te Arawa and Tauranga Moana partnerships. We come together for workshops and joint partnerships once or twice per year. Currently we are working on a Maori plan that can feed in the Long Term Plan. The objective is to make the plan a living document that works for iwi/hapu. Tauranga City Council – Tangata Whenua Collective There have been a number of representatives retiring this month including Colin Bidois, Pahu Akuhata, Matire Duncan, Karora Faulkner and Greg Rolleston. Greg has carried out a stellar job on our behalf for a number of years. We want to acknowledge Greg for all his mahi. We are looking for a Ngati Whakaue representative to step into the alternative position on TCC. It would be one or two daytime meetings per month. Meeting fees and travel are paid on attendance. Kaumatua Hui – Whale Stranding Policy Te Arawa Coastal Kaumatua are meeting on 5 May 2016, Hei Marae, at 10.00 am to wananga on Whale Strandings. This the first wananga of its kind for the coastal people and shall be covering Tikanga. If you have any purakau me ngaa waiata mauria mai ki te hui. Karanga mai, koutou katoa!

Travel options for Maketū residents

Options for travelling between Maketū and Tauranga are about to improve, with the introduction of two trial services to the Bay of Plenty’s public transport network. From Monday 25 January, the first and last journeys of the Twin City Express, between Rotorua and Tauranga, will extend to include a commuter service for Maketū each week day. And from Wednesday 27 January, a Maketū to Bayfair shopper trial will begin, providing people with an extra return trip between the town and the shopping centre on Wednesdays and Fridays. These are in addition to the existing service provided by the Whakatāne to Tauranga route which already travels via Maketū each weekday and on Saturdays. The services will also increase travel options for those travelling to and from Te Puke and Paengaroa. Lyall Thurston, Bay of Plenty Regional Councillor and Chair of the Public Transport Subcommittee said the trial services would run until the end of June to give the Regional Council enough time to evaluate whether they would be viable to continue in the longer term. “It’s been terrific to see the options for travel increase to residents across the region with trial services currently in place for Maketū, Waihī Beach and Ruatāhuna,” he said. Whether or not the services would continue past the trial period would largely depend on how frequently they were used. “At the moment all our trial services are scheduled to finish at the end of June, however if people are using them and the demand is there it’s likely they’ll continue, so I really do encourage people to look at whether taking the bus to get around is an option for them. There are plenty of benefits, such as not having to find parking or dealing with any traffic issues during the trip,” he said. Cr Thurston also urged community members to make sure they were promoting the services with their friends and families. “If you know of someone who would prefer not to drive, make sure they’re aware of the options they now have to use public transport – especially if they would like the trial to continue beyond June.” Timetables and fares for the trial services are available on the recently refreshed Baybus website www.baybus.co.nz, or by calling 0800 4 BAY BUS (0800 422 928). Key information: x Route 222a will travel from Bayfair Shopping Centre to Maketū and return each Wednesday and Friday (except public holidays). The bus will travel via Paengaroa on the Bayfair to Maketū journey, and via Te Puke on the Maketū to Bayfair leg. x Twin City Express will include Maketū on its first and last journey each weekday (the 6.20am service from Rotorua to Tauranga and the5.10pm service from Tauranga to Rotorua). This will add approximately 15 minutes to the commuter trip time. x The trial services are in addition to the existing service provided by Route 143 between Whakatāne and Tauranga which travels via Maketū each weekday and on Saturdays. x For timetable and fare information visit www.baybus.co.nz or call 0800 4 BAY BUS (0800 422 928).

Community Concern...

I’m concerned at how much of this terrible ‘Moth Plant’ there is climbing up in the orchard wind breaks. It develops huge pods filled with hundreds of seeds that go for miles on the wind. One orchard on the right about half way along Maketu road has 10 big clumps climbing his hedge. It is in full white flower at the moment. Some are already forming big pods. It will quickly re grow if the whole root is not dug out. Might be worth a mention.

Every 3rd Sunday 8am to Noon (and every 5th Sunday)

Upcoming Date

Sunday 15th & 29th May 2016 Proceeds go to community projects.
