July 20, 2016 Dear Entering Students, The “dog days of summer” are upon us, and your medical school orientation is fast approaching. In this mailing you will find information about medical equipment that you will be required to have as well as an option for purchasing that equipment in a package designed for students entering the College of Human Medicine. Listed below is the medical equipment the administrators and faculty of the Shared Discovery Curriculum are requiring of all entering students. The list includes the main items you will need when you start learning the basics of physical examination. You will continue to use these instruments throughout your training, and likely many of them throughout your career. These are items you will need to have on Monday, August 29, 2016, the first day of Shared Discovery. REQUIRED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT 1. Stethoscope • Should have a dual lumen, which has better sound quality. Read the description of the stethoscope carefully and be sure it says dual rather than single lumen. • Must have both “bell” and “diaphragm” capabilities (If you buy a stethoscope with a “tunable diaphragm" such as the Littman Cardiology III, we suggest you convert the pediatric diaphragm into a bell) • Avoid stethoscopes designed only for taking Blood Pressures often labeled for nurse use. These will not be adequate for your needs. • You may want to have your stethoscope engraved or get an inexpensive nametag to help you label and identify it. 2. Blood Pressure Cuff (Sphygmomanometer) • An average adult size cuff is sufficient. • You may wish to consider getting child and larger adult cuffs for future use. 3. Otoscope/Ophthalmoscope • Must be a traditional ophthalmoscope, not "panoptic” (“Panoptic”s give a wider view; however, they are more expensive and are often not available in clinics and emergency departments, so you will still need to learn how to use a standard ophthalmoscope.) • Generally, Welch Allyn is the only company that makes equipment of the quality you need. Avoid “pocket,” “mini,” or “compact” otoscopes or ophthalmoscopes. These will not be adequate for your needs. • A basic halogen otoscope head works well. The adjustable otoscope heads (“macroview”) are acceptable but have more tendencies to fog up during nasal examination. • Otoscopes usually come with some ear speculums.

4. Penlight 5. Reflex Hammer • Any type is fine. 6. Tape Measure with centimeter markings 7. Small plastic ruler with centimeter markings 8. Wristwatch • Analog watch with a “seconds” hand or digital watch that shows seconds, to allow you to count respirations and heart rate. 9. Tuning fork (128 Hz) • Please purchase a 128 Hz fork; a 256 Hz tuning fork does not allow for a proper sensory exam. 10. Eye Examination Card 11. Bag to carry medical instruments • Any bag is fine as long as it is clean and neat in appearance. Does not need to be intended for medical use. Below is an idea of the cost for new equipment keeping in mind that prices may vary: Stethoscope BP cuff Otoscope / Ophthalmoscope Penlight Reflex hammer Tuning fork

$160 $15-30 $575-700 $4-8 $5-14 $13-15

In general, your most expensive purchases are likely to be your otoscope/ophthalmoscope and your stethoscope. The penlight, reflex hammer, ruler, and tuning fork should be inexpensive. It is NOT necessary to buy the fanciest, newest top-of-the line equipment. However, be sure to buy high quality instruments. You often do get what you pay for. The advantage of buying new is that you may get warranties and service and it may well last you, if handled carefully, for most of your career. Disadvantage is, of course, price. Shop around. Be careful about internet purchases, some vendors sell inferior equipment. Label everything with your name as soon as you get it. Equipment often looks the same and you want to be able to identify yours.
