This is a study of the brief but stormy history of the Russian intelligentsia including the post-1915 and post-1947 emigres. A STRANGER IN THE HOUSE H. A. BLAIR.' Canon Blair leads us into an original, scholarly but always most readable exposition of the gospel and its relevance for us today. New insights, as at a feast, are brought before us on almost every page from material which some of us may have thought to be a little old and stale. It has real depth without philosophical bondage; true height and distance in very earthen vessels. Its pages number about the same as the gallons of full-bodied wine that Our Lord produced at Cana, and do much to manifest his glory and enrich our faith in him. The book, like some wine, is cheaper at 18J than many which cost 3s or 4s.'—Theology. 18s net

COMMUNITY, CHURCH AND HEALING DR. R. A. LAMBOURNE. Here is a radical study in the theology of the Church's whole mission of healing. The book is one of profound originality, written by a practising doctor who is a theological thinker of rare insight; he is concerned to express in the terms of the Church those realities of healing which are so vivid in his own experience. 18s net

THE CRUCIBLE OF LOVE A Study of the Mysticism of St Teresa of Jesus and St John of the Cross E. W. TRUEMAN DICKEN. This is a book on the most important of all subjects, the science of prayer, addressed to every educated Christian reader, but especially valuable to spiritual directors. Its author began to write a book on the science of prayer, but found that a complete analysis of the work of the two great Spanish saints was an essential preliminary to this task. The present volume is the outcome of his research. It is a work for our time, in need of prayer, in need of the knowledge gained and expounded by a great Christian woman and a great Christian man. After a brief biographical account of the two saints and an explanation of their aims as religious reformers and monastic contemplatives, this work outlines with the utmost sensitiveness and delicacy the spiritual progress of a Christian soul from vocal prayer and the first stage of mental prayer to the final mystical experience of union with God. 63s net

Jean Danielou, S.J. A HISTORY OF EARLY CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE BEFORE THE COUNCIL OF NICAEA in three volumes Originally planned jointly between the author and the British publishers for publication in Fnglfoh as a history of the development of early Christian doctrine for theological students and ordination candidates, to replace earlier works which had become out of date, this major work has, by virtue of those parts which have so far appeared in French, already won for itself a very high reputation in scholarly circles.

Volume I THE THEOLOGY OF JEWISH CHRISTIANITY Translated and edited by John Austin Baker However little it may seem that we know even now about the development of doctrine in the very earliest Christian community, this knowledge is almost incomparably greater than it was before the discovery of the Pead Sea Scrolls and the secret writings of the Egyptian gnostics. These manuscripts have thrown a new and different light on the earliest history of the Church. Although the evidence is still fragmentary and scattered, Fr Danielou has in this book been able to reassemble and organise the sparse clues in a way that brings this very early period to life and shows beyond question that, before finding expression in the hellenistic forms well known to us, Christianity first expressed itself in a Semitic form and structure. 50s net

Karl Rahner, S.J. The issues with which Fr Rahner is concerned are fundamental to the Christian religion and go down to the very roots of our contemporary Christian divisions and confrontations. M a s t r o m PASTORALIA CLASSIFICATION

THE Mastrom INDEXING AND FILING SYSTEM There must be a business side to the life of every Priest or Minister and, of course, it can be a great power for good. For, as the Rev. Charles R. Forder says in his book, The Parish Priest at Work (p. 5), 'It is a mistake to think that only the material interests can be made more efficient, for the spiritual activities of the Priest can also be made more eflBcient by careful planning and business-like procedure behind the scenes'. Is it not true that the better the system used in pastoralia the happier and greater will be the result obtained in a maximum of efficiency, a saving of time and the elimination of friction? How can anyone measure the significance of such results in Ministry? If you are not satisfied with the methods in your study, eventually you will turn to the ever-growing help of the MASTROM SYSTEM, so why not NOW? Send a postcard for information to:

The Interpretation of the New Testament 1861—1961 The Firth Lectures 1962 STEPHEN NEILL In this survey Bishop Neill shows the historical development of New Testament criticism, the movements of thought, the contrasting personalities of scholars, and the permanent contributions made by various schools, ending with an assessment of the position today. 45* net

The Revelation of St John the Divine A Commentary on the English Text AUSTIN FARRER The author is convinced that all the dues to the interpretation of Revelation lie within itself. He gives a text, based on his own correction of traditional English versions, into which he has woven a commentary concentrating on the task of making St John's thought intelligible to the English reader. 30$ net

A Mandaic Dictionary E. S. DROWER & R. MACUCH The Aramaic dialect still spoken by the dwindling sect of Mandaeans in Persia has hitherto lacked a dictionary of any kind, although a number of Mandaean texts exist, which are of importance to Biblical scholars, anthropologists, students of comparative religion, and philologists. This dictionary is based on all known Mandaean texts. £12 12s net

Towards a Theological Understanding of History ERIC C. RUST The author examines the problem of whether history has any allembracing meaning or is the result of the contingent and unforeseeable. He believes that the answer lies in the Christian revelation within history, 'salvation history', and he develops a Christian theology of history, taking the Incarnation as a pivotal centre. The Church, as a transforming power in the cultural milieu, is portrayed as the key to the historical movement, the whole being set within the eschatological framework of judgement, resurrection, and fulfilment 421 net

Jesus and Christian Origins HUGH ANDERSON Within the framework of New Testament studies, Professor Anderson surveys critically the main lines of the 'Jesus of History'—'Christ of Faith' debate since the epochal work of Martin Kahler in 1892, concentrating especially on the phase associated with the name of Rudolf Bultmann. He does not confine himself to German trends and developments, but, investigating the work of leading British and American New Testament scholars, tries to account for some of the basic methodological and hermeneutical differences between German and Anglo-American Biblical scholarship, and to assess the merits and demerits of each side. 495 net

Handbook of Biblical Chronology JACK FINEGAN The chronological references in the Bible create an extremely complex field of inquiry, and the ordinary student is often at a loss when trying to reckon biblical time. This book reviews the whole question on the most comprehensive scale yet attempted, and establishes the entire sequence of biblical dates from 605 B.C. onward, supplying lists and tables for calculations as well as full indications of sources and further literature on the subject. 605 net Princeton University Press
