had not contributed anything worthwhile or helped anyone in my life time and was feeling pretty selfish about that.

IS...

In March 2006, after the Mental Health Commission meeting I walked over to the other side intending to get help for my depression and isolation. I stepped through the door at DBH and Pathways to Recovery was having a bake sale that day. I guess I stood there like a lost puppy because Lauretta R. asked me if she could help me, and I started crying and said that I needed help fast. She invited me to the depression group that they were having that day and I told my story and was offered a job at the Canteen, which I accepted on the spot, and later in May I became the computer teacher and editor of the Pathways to Recovery Newspaper.

Diane B! Congratulations Diane, and may you enjoy many warm nights with it. And thank you also for helping to support the Children’s Christmas Fund for 2007. Diane works for Department of Behavioral Health Resources Center in the Mesa clinic.

But it wasn’t enough. I went through a lot trying to get help for my husband at that time, but because of the laws and his right to say no I could not help him. That is when I decided to learn all that I could, take all the classes, join the wellness and recovery committee, become a Certified Peer Support Specialist Volunteer, Family and Peer Advocate, and Age Wise Volunteer, to help others like me who don’t know what to do, how to do it, or where to go or who to call.

Personal Reflections is written by Pathways members, to share their experiences living with, and overcoming, a mental or emotional disorder.

This is My New Story I’m Renee Compton and proud of who I am now. When I first came to Pathways to Recovery I did not like myself very much. In fact I hated me and my life and the fact that I wasted almost all of it. I felt that except for my two children and learning to drive an 18-wheeler cross country and to Canada, I didn’t do anything worth mentioning with my time on this earth. I

Now I like me very much, and I feel like I am doing something good with my life thanks to the Mental health Commission, Lauretta, Pathways to Recovery, and my new boyfriend. They have all gotten me through the rough times, and (Continued on page 2)

have given me a future to work at, and God willing and the County of San Bernardino I will be earning a living helping others with mental and emotional disabilities.

The Lighthouse Quilt for The Children

This month they will be starting the second half of their training as Family and Peer Advocates. It will be a two week class five days a week. But when they graduate they will be Family and Peer Advocate II certified. Good luck everyone.

This is the second year that Pathways to Recovery has raffled off hand made quilts which were donated to make for the children of Behavioral Health Resources Center for Christmas. Last month it was a native American quilt, this month it is a Lighthouse quilt. Below is a sample of what is on the new quilt which will be raffled off on November 15, 2007

The NAMI Walk

The Ability to Let Things Be Without Anger.

Well Pathways to Recovery has their team for the NAMI Walk triathlon. They are called Pathways Spirit. The team got together last month at the Del Rosa Bowling Alley for lunch and some practice games before heading for the competition. And boy are we going to wop them this time.

SHARING The of Giving Without The Thought O f Receiving. HONESTY The Quality of Always Telling The Truth.

They have already completed their first competition of the triathlon. It was to get as many of our teammates to see a movie directed by a family member of a consumer, about what life was like to live with a person with schizophrenia from the time that they were a baby.

The Purity Of Doing What’s Right, No Matter What.

They found the movie to be very informative, and amazing. There was a question and Answer session after. Snacks and drinks were served.
