With next week being Father’s Day, it’s particularly timely to discuss the health of the men in our lives. In the words of Mickey Mantle, “If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.” Consequently, did you know that osteoporosis is not just a disease for women? For some of you more than others, regular testing may be wisebecause once osteoporosis develops, men are at the same risk for fractures as women. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and guidelines, their newer all men 70 years old and older should of be tested every two years regardless risk factors. If you are younger with: 1) a family history of fractures 2) low BMI – basal metabolic index 3) drink three or more alcoholic beverages daily 4) or smoke, you should also discuss testing with your doctor, specifically a DEXA scan of the hips and spine. For men, it is recommended that you get 1,000 mg D. of calcium daily as well as 800-1,000 units of Vitamin So, include dairy in your diet and read those food labels. You may be surprised as to the many ways calcium and Vitamin D are available to you.
