As part of the 100th Anniversary ANZAC commemorations, in this special free event, the School of Music, in collaboration with the UWA Choral Society and Churchlands Senior High School present Britten’s epic War Requiem.

Every year, the outstanding ability and youthful passion of the emerging artists and their mentors combine to celebrate the culmination of a yearlong collaboration. Three young artists perform a movement of their chosen concerto onstage at the Perth Concert Hall in the finals of the prestigious VOSE competition, before the Orchestra performs Mendelssohn’s popular Italian Symphony.

International concert pianist, Bernadette Harvey is renowned for her commitment to Australian music. Since winning the ABC ‘Young Performer of the Year’, her career has taken her all over the world to great acclaim. Bernadette returns to Perth in 2015 for this special event.

CENTENARY In 2015 Australia will commemorate the ANZAC Centenary. UWA’s ANZAC Centenary program will encompass not only the Frist World War, but all wars, conflicts and operations in the last 100 years. The School of Music is honoured to be presenting three special performances as part of these commemorations.

A CONCERT FOR HIROSHIMA Thursday 6 August 7.30pm Winthrop Hall Marking the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, a combined Wind Orchestra from the UWA School of Music and the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts will present works such as Nelson’s haunting Morning Alleluias in a free concert opening the UWA ANZAC commemorations.

Composed whilst he was prisoner of war and premiered by his fellow prisoners at a Nazi prisoner of war camp in 1941. Messiaen’s magnificent and moving Quartet for the End of Time will be performed in this special ANZAC concert by School of Music staff.

ENSEMBLE VAGABOND Ensemble Vagabond represents Australia’s newest chamber music ensemble of national profile performing at the highest international level. As Ensemble in Residence at The University of Western Australia School of Music, Ensemble Vagabond delivers a vibrant artistic program encompassing performances, workshops, commissions, education and recording projects. The ensemble brings together four of Australia’s most accomplished young musicians: Emily Clements (flute), Liz Chee (oboe), Ashley Smith (clarinet) and Adam Mikulicz (bassoon). Throughout the year they will be joined by fellow West Australian artists, as well as national and international guest musicians.

German born and based Friedrich Gauwerky is a masterly interpreter of new music. At seventeen he won the Preis des Philharmonischen Staatsorchesters Hamburg. He was the principal cellist in the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt and member of the Australian Elision Ensemble. This programme including works by Henze, Reiner, Werder, Hindemith and Stockhausen/Gauwerky reflects the intercultural ties between the two countries Germany and Australia.

Callaway Music Auditorium The Callaway Lecture is one of the most prestigious events on the School of Music calendar. Over the last two decades, a host of distinguished speakers have taken to the podium to deliver their thoughts on subjects as broad ranging as the effects of music on the mind, and the place of music in the arts.

Proudly supported by the School of Music, the Western Australian Young Artists Chamber Music Program is an excellencebased extension course providing four days of workshops and tutorials for string quartets and piano trios, for students aged 12–17.

Join UWA Staff and Students, plus Ensemble in Residence Ensemble Vagabond as they perform in a marathon day of chamber music, featuring the works of Dvorak and Martinu. The program will include Dvorak’s American Quartet, Dumky Trio and String and Wind Serenades and will culminate in a performance of Comedy on the Bridge, a radio opera by Martinu. Interspersed amongst the performances will be discussions and papers on these fascinating composers.

The Western Australian Day of Percussion is part of the Percussive Arts Society Australian Chapter’s annual program of events and features sessions presented by local and national percussionists of various percussive disciplines. Suitable for percussionists of all ages, skill levels and styles.

It’s easy to understand how the humble Ukulele has become the worlds’ fastest growing instrument. Easily accessible to children and adults alike, join one of our introductory workshops to find out how easy it is to start playing this amazing little instrument. Suitable for children ages 8–13 years.

Following on from 2014’s inaugural Summer Music Academy, the School of Music, in partnership with St George’s College, is proud to present the 2015 Summer Music Academy. This residential music camp is designed to bring together young musicians from across Australia, Asia and beyond, for a week of intensive music training and fun, under the direction of some of Western Australia’s finest musicians, conductors and educators.
