A Message from Noella Black General Manager ext. 6803 Summer is slowly making its way and with it comes a number of changes here at Taunton Mills. I would like to start off by wishing Nicole Lock all the best as she embarks on her newest journey, being a mom. In her absence, Amy Fyfe has taken over as interim Recreation Supervisor for the Retirement Home. Amy has taken on new responsibilities moving from her role as a Recreation team member in Long-Term Care. We have also added another new member to our management team, Adam Kaake. Adam is our new Director of Environmental Services. He will be supporting both the LTC and RH environmental departments. With the return of Jodie Walker, Ana Jabbari is now the Program for Active Living Exercise Therapist in LTC. In LTC, we now have two Neighbourhood Coordinators (NC). The NC is responsible for supporting the interdepartmental team functioning within the assigned Neighbourhood. The NC is also there to support the residents and families. For the Perry and Dunlop neighbourhoods, Deborah Bungaro is the NC, while the NC for Dryden and Claremont is Tracey Cole. MaryAnn teBoekhorst is our NC on the Assisted Care Floor in our Retirement Home. At Schlegel Villages, we truly believe in team development and growth from within. As you can see, we have a lot of talent in our Village. On behalf of myself and the management team, we would like to wish them well in their new roles.

Changing the Culture of Aging Working Together to Put Living First Dan Kennedy Director of Recreation 6810 As part of the Schlegel Family of Senior Living we embrace the movement to Change the Culture of Aging. Gone are the days of institutional type living. We instead choose to practice a social model of living. To aid in this change we have selected three aspirational statements for our village to motivate us and hold us accountable for championing these changes. The three aspirational statements we have chosen are: 1.Create Meaningful and Shared Activities 2.Offer Flexible Living, and 3.Foster Authentic Relationships. To the right is a picture of a palliative care fundraiser held on Weds. May 8th, 2013. Palliative care is about relieving pain and suffering of those who are near the end of their life, as well as supporting family and loved ones during these difficult times. The palliative care advisory committee aims to improve processes around what we do in palliative care at Taunton Mills. This event was an excellent example of how the entire Village was able to come together for a good cause while building relationships with each other. In attendance at this event was residents, family members, team members, and friends from all across the Village. Together we shared in eastern Canadian cultural music, stories, and ritual making this an afternoon to remember. The night consisted of highland dancers, a eastern flavoured sing-along, a “screetching in ceremony”, and some great eastern fiddle, guitar, and singing to finish off the night. We also had the privilege of indulging in baked goods native to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, P.E.I., and New Brunswick. I would like to thank all who were able to come out and support this event which in turn will help us achieve part of our mission “holistic healthcare…. for each resident”, while at the same time striving towards our aspirational statements of creating meaningful and shared activities and fostering authentic relationships. 3

NURSING NEWS Emily Vasey Extension 5821 Director of Retirement Services

It’s June….Finally We are finally coming into summer weather and many of us are excited to be able to get out and enjoy the lovely weather and sunshine. We are all very excited; however here are a few friendly reminders. We need to remember to play safely, by wearing a hat in the sun, and always wearing sunscreen. The heat can affect our bodies quite quickly. Your body normally cools itself by perspiring. During hot weather, especially with high humidity, sweating just isn't enough. Your body temperature can rise to dangerous levels and you can develop a heat illness. Most heat illnesses occur from staying out in the heat too long. Exercising too much for your age and physical condition are also factors. If you are leaving the Village over night during the summer months please make sure you let the Admin Assistant in the Main Office know or the charge nurse so an LOA form is filed in. We always need to be aware of this information. Also a Big THANK YOU to everyone who supported the Taunton Team in the Big Bike event held on May 28th! We really appreciate all of your support in our community fundraising!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PROGRAM FOR ACTIVE LIVING Jodie Walker Ext. 6839 Happy June Everyone! I am happy to be back at the village after my maternity leave! My little boy is happy and healthy and already very active doing his exercises! Exercise is good at any age and you can derive health benefits as well as physical benefits from different types of exercise. Here at the Village we try to offer various forms of exercise to suit everyone’s needs. Some of you enjoy the group classes for a total body workout, while others prefer the challenge of the Urban Poling class. Hand therapy is a good option for those of you with stiff joints in your hands, or exercise limitations as this class is more focused and not as demanding. All the classes will continue to be offered now that I have returned and I look forward to seeing you all at some point! If you have any suggestions or ideas for classes, please be sure to let me know so that I can try to work it in! With the nice weather arriving and the urge to be outside is calling you – please remember a few things to avoid having a fall. When you first head outside, give your eyes a moment to adjust to the bright sun so that you can see where you are going. Often the sun can be quite powerful and can momentarily alter what you can see. Curbs are often the culprit here, so use the ramps when going onto the sidewalks instead of stepping down a curb. Ensure that your footwear is well fastened to your feet. Many of us enjoy an open toe, or open heel sandal in the summer but please ensure you have a stable pair of shoes when going for a walk. Sunscreen, a hat and drinking plenty of water will also help you stay hydrated and avoid the powerful strength of the sun. If you have any questions about your own personal fitness or any of the fitness classes, please feel free to give me a call, set up a visit, or just stop me in the hallways to ask. I am more than willing to talk with you about a program for you to begin!

Tsehay is new to our volunteer team. She started volunteering with us 2 months ago. She is a pleasure to work with. Tsehay was a great help at The Taste of The Village. Retirement residents, families and staff may have met her in the dining room as she comes in regularly to assist during meal times. Thank you, Tsehay for always coming in when needed. You are a great help and we enjoy having you as part of our growing volunteer team.

We are looking for volunteers to help with our Father’s Day Manly Mania Event June 15th! Contact Lisa for more details.

THANK YOU! Mother’s Day was a very special day here at Taunton Mills. Thank you to everyone who had a part in making sure it was very special to all of our Mothers at The Village. We really could not pull off these special events without the help of our volunteers. THANK YOU! Volunteer Poem of the Month Like Ripples in a Pond By Laurie Eytel We thank you for all the great things you do. Large and small, they all have meaning to the families you help and to us. One act can make all the difference. Like ripples in a pond kindness spreads outward, reaching and touching others and can change a life forever. The smiling faces we see say it all… Thank you…you are our stars! 9

Riddle of the Month This Month’s Riddle What letter is next in this sequence? M, A, M, J, J, A, S, O, _ Last Months Riddle

Sudoku is a logic-based number-placement puzzle. The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 boxes contains the digits from 1 to 9 only one time each. You start off with a partially completed grid, and every sudoku puzzle has a unique solution that you can find without guessing. As the name Speed Sudoku suggests, on this website your goal is not just to solve the sudoku puzzle, but to solve it as quickly as possible. 11

Last Month’s Riddle and Answer What row of numbers comes next in this series? 1 11 21 1211 111221 312211 13112221 Answer: 1113213211 Thank you for all the submissions, unfortunately we did not have a winner this month but some close calls!

A Message from Michelle Hofman, your Life Transition Coach-LTC Ext. 6812 Regrets, I’ve had a few But then again, too few to mention. I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption. I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway, And more, much more than this, I did it my way. From the song My Way sung by Frank Sinatra, written by Paul Anka

Over the last couple of newsletter submissions, I have been speaking about gratitude and how it can help all of us if we can consider at least one good thing that has happened in our lives each day. One of the barriers to finding that sense of gratitude may be the regrets we carry with us throughout our lives. So today, I will be sharing some points that the psychiatrist James S Gordon has included in his book, Unstuck. 1. Admit what you didn’t do, what you lost, or what you got that you no longer want. Pretending you are not upset does not help you let go and get past your regret. 2. If you are regretting something you did in the past, remember that when you made the choice, it made sense at the time. Remind yourself you are different now so you look at past choices and may regret. Remember can’t change the past. 3. We often think we are the only ones who has done something regrettable. Find someone you can talk to don’t need to ask, person you are talking to if they have had a comparable experience. This will help you to realize others have made similar decisions and carried on. Your feelings of regret may not go away entirely, but sharing them should bring some relief. 4. The next time you have to make a major decision, breathe slowly and deeply before asking yourself, “Does this feel right to me?” Pay attention to your body’s response and what you hear in your mind. If you don’t immediately feel a strong yes or no, just wait a moment. It’s the relaxed, aware mind that is least likely to have regrets and when they do occur – to let them go more easily.

Tickle your Funny Bone

Jokes from Residents, Staff, Family Members and Volunteers If you have any jokes please submit to Dan Kennedy or Amy Fyfe

Future Son-in-Law A girl brings her boy friend home to meet her parents. After dinner, her mother tells her father, a business tycoon, to find out about the young man. He invites the boy to his study for green tea. "So what are your plans?" the father asks the boy. "I am a religious scholar and want to marry your daughter" he replies. "A scholar," the father says. "Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter to live in, as she's accustomed to?" "I will study," the young man replies, "and God will provide for us." "And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?" asks the father.

Cool message by a wife Dear Mother-in-law, "Don't teach me how to handle my children, I'm living with one of yours & he needs a lot of improvement"

"I will concentrate on my studies," the young man replies, "God will provide for us." "And children?" asks the father. "How will you support children?"

A Special Package for Businessmen.

"Don't worry, sir, God will provide," replies the boy. The conversation proceeds like this, and each time the father questions, the boy insists that God will provide.

An Airline introduced a special package for Business men. Buy your ticket; get your wife's ticket free. After great success, the company sent letters to all the wives asking how the trip was. All of them gave the same reply..."What trip?"

Later, the mother asks, "How did it go?" The father answers, "He has no job and no plans, but the good news is that he thinks I'm God."

Thanks for all submissions. 13

Across Schlegel Villages we have started to use shift huddles to improve communication within the interprofessional team. We believe that this will ultimately improve resident care levels and quality of life. One thing we make a deliberate effort to do during huddles is to pick one item (strength or area for improvement) and brainstorm ideas in order to improve that item. We do this using a tool called a fishbone diagram. The items we discuss are identified by our quality of life survey results or our quality improvement indicators (statistics). This system allows all team members within the Village to participate in our quality improvement program. We welcome suggestions for improvements from residents, family members, and team members and are now using our newsletter to communicate what each neighbourhood is working on each month. The items we are working on this month are as follows;

Claremont: I can have a bath or shower as often as I want. Dryden: People ask for my help and advice. Dunlop: Falls in the last 30 days. Perry: Responsive behaviours. A.C.F.: People ask for my help and advice. Apt. and I.L.: People ask for my help and advice. Main Floor: I have enough variety in my meals.
