A Message from

Jillian Heaver Assistant General Manager ext. 6847 As we approach the end of our summer season, the team members at the Village of Taunton Mills are already preparing for a busy fall. One of the activities we are preparing for is our Customer Quality Service Review (CQSR). This is a review of all of our processes to ensure that we are providing quality care to all of our residents in the retirement and long-term care settings. On September 9th, 10th and 11th, several team members from the Schlegel Villages support office will be here to complete audits on many of our processes. Examples of the audits that will be completed are resident dining, medication administration and trust account audits, to name a few. The team also interviews residents, team members and family members to achieve a subjective viewpoint of their satisfaction with the services they are receiving at the Village of Taunton Mills. The results of the CQSR helps us to improve our customer service in all aspects of village life.

In July the retirement home of the Village of Taunton Mills was visited by the Retirement Home Regulatory Authority (RHRA). The purpose of their visit was to complete audits in retirement to ensure we are compliant with the regulations which are now mandatory in all retirement homes in Ontario. We will receive a report of this audit and it will be posted on the RHRA bulletin board, across from the nursing station, for all residents and families to review. If you have any questions regarding the RHRA review, please see Noella or Emily.

Changing the Culture of Aging Working Together to Put Living First Dan Kennedy Director of Recreation 6810 As part of the Schlegel Family of Senior Living we embrace the movement to Change the Culture of Aging. Gone are the days of institutional type living. We instead choose to practice a social model of living. To aid in this change we have selected three aspirational statements for our village to motivate us and hold us accountable for championing these changes. The three aspirational statements we have chosen are: 1.Create Meaningful and Shared Activities 2.Offer Flexible Living, and 3.Foster Authentic Relationships. At Schlegel Villages Inc. and the Village of Taunton Mills, team members have been encouraged to be creative and innovative when it comes to trialing new programs. One new program introduced at the 2014 Recreation Conference was the idea of Jenny engages residents of Claremont neighbourhood in drumming for fitness. The picture to the drumming for fitness. right shows an example of drumming for fitness in action where residents engage in rhythmic movements beating a stability ball with their drum sticks along to the beat of music. This program has almost a social feel to it as it involves music and companionship, but believe me this is a quality form of exercise. Physically, this program exercises core muscles in participant’s abdominal region and lower back while residents lean forward to make each movement. Upper extremity muscles such as triceps, biceps, and forearm muscles are also stressed from the drumming motion. Hand-eye coordination is also maintained as participants are prompted to strike the stability ball with their drum sticks. These benefits are all great, but one other benefit that might not initially be thought of is stress relief! Not only do residents have the opportunity to strike an object with a stick, but there is usually a significant amount of laughing that takes place during each session. In fact webmd.com published an article stating that laughter in itself has the following physiological effects on the human body; blood flow (vessels expand and contract normally), immune response (laughter may boost level of immune cells), blood sugar (may lower blood sugar levels with those who live with diabetes), and is also said to improve relaxation and sleep. This program is definitely a fun program, I encourage residents to join in on the fun when it is offered on your neighbourhood. Please inquire with a recreation team member if you are interested in participating in this type of program. 3

NURSING NEWS Emily Vasey Ext. 5821 Director of Retirement Services Preparation for Flu Season Friendly reminder that Flu season is coming upon us. A few things you need to know about the flu season in our village. First and foremost we will be holding flu shot clinics here at the village. Please watch for the posters that will be posted in November. You will need to bring your health card to these flu clinics. Secondly we need to prepare in case we do have a flu outbreak here at the village. Public Health will declare an outbreak if there are more than 3 people with the flu. Then Public Health will expect all staff members and residents to proactively take an antibiotic to help stop the spread of the flu. We call this antibiotic TAMIFLU. To prepare for this you will be receiving a package that must be brought to your doctor and filled out, this includes having blood work completed. The TAMIFLU is dosed according to your kidney functions and that is why the blood work is so important. Please voice any concerns or issues you might have to Emily Vasey, Director of Retirement or your Charge Nurse.
