Breakfast With Santa at St. Luke’s

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Saturday, December 3rd 9:00 AM - 12 Noon, Fellowship Hall

On Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24, our worship service will follow the schedule of past years. We will have a Children’s Service at 4:00 PM, which will be a service of Holy Communion and will feature the Christmas Pageant and a brief Children’s homily. We will sing Christmas carols and have a piano accompaniment. Our second service, at 6:00 PM, will be the service of Holy Eucharist and Sermon. The Christmas music will be led by our Contemporary Music Ensemble. Finally, at 10:00 PM, the third service - the Holy Eucharist and Sermon - will be led, musically, by our Adult Choir, with organ as the primary instrument. On Christmas Day, which falls on a Sunday, this year, our one service will be at 10:00 AM. This traditional service (Rite One) will be the Holy Eucharist, with a sermon. Christmas hymns and special music by Nate Mayfield (trumpet) are part of this liturgy. Please note that on Sunday, January 1 (Holy Name Day), we will also have one service - at 10:00 AM. Our organist, David Thoresen, will lead us in Christmas hymns. The liturgy will be the Holy Eucharist, Rite Two. The regular worship schedule will return on Sunday, January 8th. A brief reminder about these special services: we will be visited by guests, seekers, out-of-towners, and several who worship with us once or twice a year. Let us be prepared and quick to greet everyone. So, if you see a person you have never seen before, introduce yourself and offer any assistance if you notice they are struggling with a prayer book or hymnal. It is important to offer Christian hospitality to those who are not familiar with worship at our church. Thank you!

An annual tradition at St. Luke’s and a great opportunity to invite your neighbors is Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 3, from 9:00 to 12 noon. In addition to the pancakes cooked by the Men of St. Luke’s, there will be a bake sale and a Christmas Bazaar. The youth group will lead a puppet show for the younger children...and Santa Claus is rumored to make his annual appearance. Come join us in the Fellowship Hall.

Advent Lessons and Carols, December 11th, 9:00 am On Sunday, December 11, the Third Sunday of Advent, at the 9:00 AM worship service, the Choir will lead us in a selection of nine scripture readings and anthems or hymns. It is a beautiful service, and aids our preparation for Christmas. As the Bidding Prayer opens, “...in this season of Advent, let it be our care and delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the Angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem...” Our Choir, Don Grantham and David Thoresen prepare for this special event in a busy time of the year, and we are grateful.

Jesus’ Birthday Party, December 18th

Church Office Will Be Closed

An inter-generational event for many years at St. Luke’s is “Jesus’ Birthday Party,” hosted by our Children’s Ministries. This year, the party will be on Sunday, December 18, in the Fellowship Hall, from 10:15 to 11:15 AM. Special foods and craft events take place for the entire family to enjoy (see more details on page 4).

Office to be closed on the following dates: December 23 - 26, and December 30 - January 1. For more information on 2016 charitable gift tax deductions deadlines and offering envelopes for 2017, please see the Holiday Schedule on page 7.

RECTOR’S COLUMN

The Holy Grounds of St. Luke’s on the Lake With our recent addition of the Good Shepherd statue, I began to realize just how many different “holy places” we have on our campus. In recent years, our attention to the details of our property is a mark of faithful stewardship. We have many people to thank for this renewal. Moreover, these places have been sources of inspiration to those of us who call St. Luke’s on the Lake our spiritual home and also, to those who visit our church property (tourists, attending an event, outside groups, etc.). One of the joys for me in working here is to witness how others find spiritual refreshment on our church grounds. Of course, people have for years stopped at St. Luke’s to view Lake Travis or take in a beautiful sunset. Sometimes, they will rise to the top of the barbeque pit, carefully avoiding the earthen memorial dedicated to Gus Pacharzina. Or, they might walk the perimeter of the cliff next to the lower parking lot. Both vantage points offer premium locations for photography. But, recently I have noticed other moments, thanks to some of our recent additions. Like, the young mother explaining to her children one morning before the opening of Mother’s Day Out, who is the Good Shepherd. The three of them sat on the sidewalk in front of the statue. As I quietly approached them on the way to the office, I heard the mother say, “Jesus is our Good Shepherd.” Like, the young couple with their arms around each just beyond the patio outside the Fellowship Hall, a direct view from my office window. For a few moments, I pondered where they might be in the arc of their relationship. It seemed like an important conversation was taking place, so I was pleased our grounds could provide the setting.

Like, the elderly man who was sitting in the Columbarium and Prayer Garden, with a prayerful countenance. Here, he had been given some time set apart to discern something important to him. Had he recently lost a loved one, and discovered this place as an area where he might grieve? Like, the quiet, stoic young man who was stationed in the tunnel and looking outside at the small landscaped area between the office and the church (lower level, below the Good Shepherd). He did not flinch as I passed by, nor did I interrupt his meditation with my words. Like, the two Boy Scouts who toured the meditation trail on the far end of the upper parking lot, probably checking on the work they or their friends accomplished a few years ago. Who knows what lies in the future for this trail? Will it be extended? Will it connect up to the gate near the playground? What is common about these five scenes above is that none of the people described are parishioners, but all have a connection of some kind to the “holy grounds” of St. Luke’s. What about you who are members? Are you looking for a holy place to pray, or to meditate, or to discern, or to grieve, or to talk to God and each other? If so, you might find such a place somewhere here. Peace,

ST. LUKE’S January 30 Day Challenge One of the biggest times of setting goals and making commitments is coming up! You know the one I am talking about. The one that many people make but most break way too soon; “I am going to start working out” or “I am going to eat better” or “I am going to be more involved with my kids” or “I am going to have date night once a week with my spouse.” Yes, New Year’s resolutions are almost upon us. Maybe you don’t even bother anymore. Maybe you don’t see the point of making a commitment you are never going to complete. The biggest reason I have heard why people don’t stick with their resolutions is simply that they are too hard! Well I want to actually challenge you to try something different this year. I want you to take up this challenge and actually commit yourself to sticking it out. Other than Sunday, what are you doing to feed your soul? How much of God’s word do you actually hear or look at each day? What would it look like if you actually put scripture into your life every day of the week? Here is the thing, it will actually be very easy! No exercise, no being deprived of anything! For most of us it won’t even require any more of your time. I want to challenge everyone to commit to 30 Days of listening to God’s word every day! Did you know there are thirteen Christian Radio stations in the Austin area? For thirty days starting January 1st, 2017, I want you to listen to Christian radio every day. You can listen when you are getting ready for work in the morning, when you are exercising. You know when you are driving to work would be a great time to hear God’s word in your life. Don’t have a radio? You can stream most Christian radio stations on your computer, your phone, or maybe you can stream on your Smart TV. It would be nice to have something good coming out of your TV wouldn’t it! Satellite Radio has Christian options, GodTube, 105.9 FM, 88.1, 88.5, 88.7, 90.0, 91.1, 91.5, 91.9, 92.1, 92.5, 99.3,

106.3. Station 105.9 is the station that I found when I first got to Austin and I have listened to it every day since. If Radio is not your thing you can find sermons, podcasts, Bible series online and more! The point is to get the word of God into you mind and heart every single day! So come on and commit to this 30 Day Challenge in January. The Rev. Mark Chambers

Next newsletter deadline will be December 1st, 2016 for the January 2017 issue of The View. Focus for this issue will be Epiphany.

If you would like to donate poinsettias for the altar for Christmas, please send a check for $25.00 to the church office, St. Luke’s on the Lake Episcopal church, 5600 Ranch Road 620 N., Austin, TX 78732, with whatever message you would like to have in the pew sheets. Thank you.

TWO IMPORTANT FINANCIAL REMINDERS 2016 Charitable Gift Tax Deductions: For IRS requirements, contributions claimed in 2016 must have been placed in the offering plate on Sunday, December 25th or hand-delivered to the church office before 4:00 pm on Thursday, December 29th when the church office closes for the New Year’s holiday, or postmarked by December 31. New Offering Envelope Numbers Each Calendar Year: Because different families order Offering Envelopes year to year, and the envelopes are assigned alphabetically only for those families who request them, if you give cash please be sure to use the current year’s envelopes for your contributions so they are credited to the correct contributor. The 2017 envelope boxes will be in the Narthex Dec. 4-11 for those who requested them on their pledge cards. Please contact Anne Severson in the church office at 512-2662455 if you would like to have Offering Envelopes assigned to you for 2017.

CHILDREN AND FAMILY MINISTRIES

You have to be there to see The lesson for the last rotation for Preschool through Elementary was on Zacchaeus. A short little story about short little man. The story is ONLY found in the Gospel of Luke (chapter 19:1-10). The part of the story that most people remember is that Zacchaeus had to climb into a tree to see Jesus. Luckily, he was at the right place at the right time, or there may not have been a tree for him to climb just as Jesus was passing by. Our children learned a number of wonderful life lessons from this story. But the part I like the best is that, because Zacchaeus was seeking Jesus, he was blessed by Him and made a life altering change. We have the potential for that same kind of life altering change or growth every time we are in the presence of Jesus. One way to enhance the probability is to be in Sunday School. In fact, “Sunday School IS the tree.” (per Neil MacQueen) I know how busy we are, especially with children. Sometimes we let “crowded” schedules and other people’s priorities obscure our view. Zacchaeus climbed above it, and Jesus took notice. Zacchaeus put himself in a position to have his life changed. Making a special effort to fellowship with other Christians and learn the Word is a gift to both our children and God. And although no tree climbing is involved, you have to be there to see. . . . Take a Deep Breath Advent Materials continue to be available through December 11th. Take what you need, but please leave a small love a donation to defray our costs. December 3rd – Breakfast with Santa. Be sure to invite your friends and join us that Saturday morning from 9am – noon for MOSL Pancakes, EYC Puppetry, CFM Crafts,

homemade treats and crafts for sale and of course, Santa! You don’t want to miss this much loved tradition here at St. Luke’s. Contact LoriAnn at [email protected] if you would like to help with CFM crafts and face painting. December 11th – Pre-EYC will celebrate with a Christmas Party from 4:45-6:45pm in Big Room; all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are invited. Watch the Cliff Notes weekly e-letter for specific details as we get closer. December 11th – Lessons & Carols. During the 9am service of Lessons and Carols, all children are invited to Big Room Riker, where Rite K will have a special interactive Nativity service (and maybe a movie). As there is no communion at this service, we will keep the children in Rite K the entire time. They will be picked up in Big Room Riker afterwards OR just stay for Sunday School! [We will let you bring them their donuts though.] ☺ The 11:30am service will proceed as usual, with Rite K as usual. December 18th - Jesus’ Birthday Party! Please plan for the entire family (and anyone else you can grab) to join us in the Parish Hall at 10:15am for our Intergenerational Event featuring an hour of fellowship, food, fun and a special presentation on this fourth and final Sunday of Advent. We will show off our special Tree of Jesse, complete with symbols from the bloodline of Jesus and the covenant promise from God and we (that means everyone) can participate in the creation of a unique piece of “Jesse Tree” art. This is our 9th Annual gathering of this event. You don’t want to miss it! Cupcakes (including gluten free) WILL be served. Because a party without cake is just a meeting (per Julia Child). December 24th – Please plan to join us on December 24th, Christmas Eve, for our annual Christmas Pageant and Children’s Service at 4pm. We invite all children, preschool through 5th grade, to be part of the service. With angels and shepherds and animals to choose from, your child will be part of the story of the Nativity as we read the Gospel rendering of Jesus’ birth and sing traditional hymns in

accompaniment – no reading, reciting or acting is required! Our 5th grade boy and girl with the best attendance will be our Mary and Joseph: can’t wait to see who it is! We will have costumes available beginning December 11th, in the Parish Hall. And if you plan on having your child walk in the “pageant” that evening, please have them in the Parish Hall by 3:35pm. You will want to come early to get a good seat up front anyway! (Psst: and remember we always see a special visitor, don’t we?) December 25th and January 1st we will have no Sunday School or Rite K. I know. It’s a bummer. But even Children’s ministers need a break. Not to worry though, as we will get back into the swing of things on January 8th! Speaking of Epiphany, January 8th will mark our preEpiphany procession of the Magi! As is our tradition, our youth and older elementary students will represent Mary, Joseph and the “three magi/ kings,” processing in (and out again) at the beginning of each of the 9am and 11:30am services. Please encourage your children to accept this opportunity to be King/Queen for the Day, as the time investment is very short and there are no speaking parts. Exhale . . . and Smile! Please remember those who are not as fortunate as us. Children and Family Ministries provides two very easy avenues to bless someone else this Christmas Season: Rite K Contributions Parents, please remind your children to bring an offering to Rite K. This is not just a Christmas season thing – we have Rite K all year long! And yes, this is one of those “teach by doing” moments. St. Luke’s supports many organizations which are always in need of canned goods and other nonperishables. Imagine how big a basket we would need if everyone brought one box of pancake mix each week. donations to be specifically used in children’s ministry: simple games, books, or monetary donations. We plan to use these donations to support our frequent natural disaster relief efforts and the Middle and High School mission trips; they often minister to kids in their work during the summer. May the peace of the Lord be with you always. We look forward to seeing you and your children soon. It would not be the same without you!

Sitting here watching the rain dampen South Central Texas and remembering the several past years when Lake Travis was “low,” tanks were dust bowls and we yearned for a light sprinkle to clear the air. Well, here we are 15 months after the May 2015 storms filled our lakes and while life will always surprise us with interesting challenges---it’s our challenge to remind ourselves of who’s in charge and to be still and listen. Things are changing all the time and our gracious God who is forgiving and loving is looking to us to carry his word in our daily lives. While he is in charge, he is also looking for us to take control and be an active and faithful participant in our schools, churches and other organizations. A thriving community is one that is built on faithful volunteers…. that is what we have here in Northwest Austin and at St. Luke’s! This past year has seen our annual MOSL events, like the MOSL Habitat for Humanity Golf Tournament and Men’s Retreat, provide its own challenges and stress points. Our registration numbers were down from previous years, yet both events proved successful in their ultimate mission---bringing faithful men together to have some fun, enjoy nature and worship/pray together. Yes, our golf tournament provides time to worship and pray together and not just over 12’ putts! The golf tournament allowed us to financially support our partnership with Habitat for Humanity and on St. Luke’s “build day” we had 4 chefs and another 16 or so men to assist with construction. Thank you to all who assisted either financially or on Build Day----you made it happen! Our annual MOSL Retreat, which will be moving back to a November date in 2017, brought a couple dozen men together at Camp Allen to worship with Fr. Mark as we discussed “The Jesus Movement” and how each one of us plays a part in God’s continuing plan. Again, if you haven’t been able to attend the MOSL Retreat in previous years please put Nov 17- 19 on your calendar now. It’s

a great reset at the end of year and just prior to Advent makes it an even more special time to revisit your path with the Lord individually and as a group. So as I look towards 2017, I know the Lord will provide opportunities to volunteer for activities and events that support our church and community. In last month’s newsletter I discussed how we need to “Care and Share” our talents. Be on the lookout for these opportunities to Care and Share whether it’s within MOSL or your own neighborhood. ADULT FORMATION - SUNDAY MORNINGS, 10:30 - 11:15 A.M. Introductions Coffee Series *New Location*

Riker Conference Room (Upstairs next to Riker Kitchen)

Whether you are a guest or a recently arrived worshiper, or a curious long-time member at St. Luke’s on the Lake, this is the best entry point for learning how we practice the Christian faith here. The Introductions Coffee Series is a safe place to ask any question about Christianity, the Episcopal Church, and St. Luke’s on the Lake, and explore the answers with others. The programs in this series are non-sequential and are repeated throughout the school year, so that you can join in on any Sunday. All are welcome here! History introduces you to those elements of the Episcopal Church which are distinctive to the Episcopal Church and those which we share with other Christian churches. Offered December 4th Liturgy introduces you to the Sunday worship which is at the heart of our weekly life as Christians. How does this worship service affect us? What are the essential components of the service? Offered December 11th Journey introduces you to one person’s story of their relationship with Jesus Christ and how that relationship shapes their daily living. Offered January 8th Walking Tour introduces you to both the history of St. Luke’s on the Lake and to the physical plant. If you don’t know where the “Dungeon” or the “Tunnel” is, then this class is for you! The Tour starts at the big rock in the Narthex (sanctuary foyer) rather than in the Conference Room. Offered January 22nd

The Message of the Prophets Led by Fr. Mike Wyckoff Dec 4 & Dec 11 The Fellowship Hall

In a crucial time in the history of Judaism and the nation of Israel, Samuel, the last and the greatest judge of Israel, had a vision. He envisioned the Jewish tribes, generally consolidated in two kingdoms – Israel in the north and Judah in the south – might become united in the creation of a monarchy. It was King David who fulfilled Samuel’s prophecy of a united kingdom, with the establishment of the capital in Jerusalem. Yet, the glory of the House of David was short-lived, and difficulty returned at the end of the reign of David’s son, Solomon. When King Solomon died in 922 BC, the kingdom was divided once again. There were several factors that conspired to cause the division, including incompetent kings, aggressive foreign enemies, and a lack of fidelity to their religious covenant. As a consequence of this national and religious crisis, the people of Israel would need new prophets (literally, “God’s mouthpieces”). The best of the prophets became the unofficial, radical outsiders, those who were not approved by the kings and priests. Thus, a new and clearer tradition would give the exiled Jews a hope for the future, and a vision that they would eventually return to their home. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now, it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18, 19) In thirteen classes, I wish to offer a teaching on the “message of the prophets,” beginning with the Elisha and Elijah cycles, continuing with the classical prophecies of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and others, and concluding with the post-exilic (upon the return of the Jews to their home) prophets. It is my belief that some of

6

the most beautiful prose in the Bible takes place in these pages, as well as hopeful, inspiring and challenging words that stand the test of time. In addition, the message of these prophets is vital to our understanding of the Old Testament, and certainly, in the context of the message and ministry of Jesus Christ, to our understanding of the New Testament. Please join me as we highlight the salient passages of these faithful, courageous “mouthpieces” of God, and hear anew their words of the New things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them….Sing to the Lord a new song! (Isaiah 42: 9, 10) Dec 4th - During the Restoration (Post-Exile). Brief History, Haggai and Zechariah. Dec 11th - During the Restoration, Part 2: Third Isaiah, Malachi and Jonah
