The Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education General Information

Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education

he University of Winnipeg’s Faculty of Education is pleased to offer a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Education (PBDE). The PBDE is a 30 credit hour program developed for in-service teachers and other educators and care givers. The University of Winnipeg currently offers a flexible General PBDE stream, as well as a more specialized School Counselling PBDE stream.

T

Value of the PBDE Earning a PBDE has many benefits. It allows educators an opportunity to grow personally and professionally by targeting and building their skills in specific areas. It opens up possibilities for lifelong learning and personal/career enhancement for individuals who do not have the time, inclination, or background to enrol in a formal graduate program. There are other advantages as well: • Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth recognizes the PBDE for salary classification purposes. • In appropriate circumstances, Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth may also count some PBDE courses toward their School Clinician, Special Education, Counselling, and Level 1 or 2 School Leader Certificates. • As a recognized Diploma, the PBDE is conferred at Convocation, and often helpful for career development and advancement.

Prerequisites To be considered for the University of Winnipeg PBDE, candidates must meet the following requirements: • Have maintained a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all degree or after-degree programs. • Hold a Bachelor of Education degree (or equivalent) • Students may be admitted to the General Stream, if they hold a Bachelor's degree in an area other than Education, and if they are employed as clinicians in a school setting. Applicants in this must submit a resume with their application. Students applying to the Counselling stream must have completed a B.Ed. Degree.

Course Delivery The mandate of the Faculty of Education at the University of Winnipeg is to address urban, inner-city issues. To that end, although there will be many flexible possibilities, our faculty will be emphasizing and delivering a variety of PBDE courses in the at-risk and enrichment and talent development domains (including some highly specific special education offerings). We soon hope to expand the selection to include courses in counselling, assessment in special education, and other innovative options in the CI&A (Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment) realm.

Due to the need to find times suitable for in-service teachers in the schools, most courses will run either mornings or afternoons during the first 12 teaching days of July. We will also schedule some courses which will run for 2 to 3 days at the end of August, and then alternate all-day sessions for several Saturdays thereafter. This format is generally well-received by teachers, who are rejuvenated and "geared up for action" after the summer break, and grateful for the chance to try out new ideas, strategies, and approaches in their own classrooms during September and October.

Program Requirements General Requirements • •

Students must complete 30 credit hours of course work to earn their PBDE. A maximum of 12 credit hours may be taken from other post-secondary institutions and, upon approval from the Faculty of Education, transferred to the University of Winnipeg's PBDE Program. There will be no credit given for professional development sessions (i.e., only formal university courses will be accepted for the PBDE). Students must achieve a minimum grade of C+ in all PBDE courses.

Course Requirements for the General Stream The General PBDE program at the University of Winnipeg is flexible, but subject to the following requirements (and possibilities): • A minimum of 18 credit hours must be University of Winnipeg Education courses at the 5,000 level (which also fulfills the Residency Requirement). • All 30 of those credit hours may be taken at the 5,000-level. • Although the entire Program might be comprised of Education courses, a maximum of 12 credit hours may be below the 5,000 level and taken from any Faculty. (Students, however, may not count courses at the 1,000 level or lower.)

Course Requirements for the School Counselling Stream The specialized School Counselling stream will provide the theory and skills needed to develop and deliver counselling programs that promote students' personal and social well being, academic achievement, and career development in schools. Our instructors have all worked as counselling practitioners, and will bring current methods and practical strategies based on their own experience to the classroom. This program will be of interest to both novice and experienced counsellors who wish to take on expanded leadership roles in their schools. Our program meets the requirements of the School Counsellor Certificate granted by Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth.
