The University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Music VIOLIN JURY & RECITAL REQUIREMENTS

General Information:

Please read carefully:

For each jury, three (M1140) or four (all music major juries) categories must be covered and are to be performed as listed. Total playing time should be minimum of 20 minutes for 1st and 2nd year students, 30 minutes for 3rd and 4th year students. The jury panel will have the right to ask for just excerpts of the proposed requirements.

1) Category 1 / (Repertoire) a) “Pieces” refers to movements from concertos or sonatas, show pieces or works for violin solo. You can choose either: Two movements from same work (fast/slow) OR one slow and one fast movement from different works OR works of same period of styles OR two movements from different pieces and different stylistic periods b) “Grade levels” refer to the representative levels of repertoire suggested in the current Royal Conservatory Syllabus or in the current Contemporary Showcase Syllabus. c) Performance majors, or anyone planning to audition for the performance degree, are required to perform from memory (concertos, show pieces, solo violin). Exception: sonatas and contemporary music. Category 2 / (Studies) Studies/Caprices need not be performed from memory. Exception: Paganini and Wieniawski Category 3 / (Technique) Students are required to play all technique listed for each jury FROM MEMORY. All technique will be taken from “Carl Flesch: Scale System” (or discussed with the teacher.) Typically all scales and arpeggios must be 3 octaves, all double stop scales should be 2 octaves. Scales, Chromatic Scales and Arpeggios should all be directly connected without stops. Scales:

- 3 Octaves - slurred into two bows (24 notes down bow, 24 notes up bow) - directly connecting major, to melodic minor, to harmonic minor to chromatic (2 octaves)

Arpeggios:

- 3 Octaves - slurred into two bows (9 notes down, 9 notes up for major/minor and 12 notes down, 12 notes up for dominant 7th and diminished 7th) - directly connecting major, to minor, to dominant 7th , to diminished

(ADVICE: if you follow Flesch Scale System (no.5), you will have covered all the arpeggios including all the inversions.) Double Stops:

- 2 Octaves - minimum 4 notes slurred (or as assigned by the teacher)

2) Category 4 / (Orchestra Excerpts) (where applicable) NOTE: You are required to get your orchestra excerpt from the Music Office in order to ensure you have the correct materials.

VIOLIN RECITAL: M4928 (formerly M 461) Repertoire must cover a minimum of two periods of style from the listed categories. a) b) c) d) e)

Baroque Classical Romantic/Impressionistic Modern/20th Century Contemporary (composed after 1960 inclusive)

One work must be from category d) or e).

One work must be sonata (also possible sonata for violin solo).

No more than one concerto can be performed in the recital.

All works must be performed with all movements. (except: - Bach: Chacconne can be performed without the previous four movements - Tchaikovsky: Concerto can be performed either 1st movement alone or 2nd AND 3rd movement - Brahms: Concerto can be performed either 1st movement alone or 2nd AND 3rd movement - Paganini: Concerto No. 1 D major can be performed either 1st movement alone or 2nd AND 3rd movement

Exceptions to the repertoire must be approved by the Professor and the Department Chair.
