Financial Report for FY12 The total annual budget for the College in FY12 was $73.1 million, an increase of 3.7%. To meet our budget, we rely upon the income for services (VTH and Diagnostic Laboratories), state appropriation, federal sponsorship, tuition remanded to the CVM from the University, gifts and endowment income. Alumni and Friends FY12 Giving Thanks to your generosity, the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine raised a record-setting $17,802,520 in gifts and pledges, from alumni and friends, in FY12 (compared to the FY11 total of $4,640,925). The College finished first in fundraising among all 17 schools and colleges within the University of Georgia. In addition, for the first time in our history, the CVM raised more than $1 million in annual giving! We had 3,394 donors help us reach this special goal, raising a total of $1,021,474. The CVM’s alumni giving base continues to be among the strongest of all the University of Georgia’s schools and colleges. Within FY12, 18% of the CVM’s alumni made gifts to our College, which is the same level of giving we had from our alumni in FY11. Once again, we were exceeded by only the School of Law, which had a 25% alumni participation rate. The CVM’s goal is to have at least 25% of our alumni giving annually. Gifts restricted to the CVM from all UGA alums (a total of 765 alums from all UGA schools and colleges) was $330,634 in FY12 (compared to $1,269,435 in FY11).

Class Campaign/Reunion Giving Reunion giving for the College was strong in FY12, with $105,666.35 raised from the class campaigns. Gifts from the Class of 1987 (top photo) totaled $25,680.00 (32% participation rate), more than any other reunion class at the 49th Annual Veterinary Conference and Alumni Weekend. The Class of 1977 (middle photo) came in second place with gifts totaling $15,023.31 (27% participation rate). The Class of 1962 (bottom photo) was in third place for gifts, bringing in $12,900.00, and had the highest participation rate of any reunion class at 38%. First Look: New Veterinary Medical Learning Center

A

fter more than a decade of planning and fundraising, the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine is poised to break ground on a new home for its Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), including classroom space to educate future veterinarians. Building of the facility, known as the Veterinary Medical Learning Center, is scheduled to begin in February 2013. It is a milestone achieved with the help of a vast and supportive community, including: alumni, hospital clients, Georgia’s leaders and lawmakers, charitable institutions, major donors, administrators from the University of Georgia, as well as the University System Board of Regents. But while we are ready to build, we still have much fund-raising to do, noted Dr. Sheila W. Allen, dean of the College, who estimates the current total project costs at $105 million. “There are still lots of opportunities to contribute financially to this project,” said Allen. “We will need new equipment that is as state-of-the-art as the facility itself.” The state of Georgia appropriated $60 million for planning money and construction costs. As of June 30, 2012, the CVM had raised $20,996,030 in private donations toward the construction of the VMLC. The College also received a challenge grant, in November 2012, from a foundation, which wishes to remain anonymous. This challenge grant will match every dollar raised from this point forward, up to $1 million. Throughout the design process, which began in Fall 2010, VTH administrators, faculty and staff have 4

worked closely with the architecture firm, Perkins + Will, www.perkinswill.com, to design a facility that could expand through the years, while still keeping costs as low as possible. Their aim, said Dr. Gary Baxter, has been to create a hospital that will provide vast improvements for our patients and their owners, and also provide a better environment for the clinicians, staff and students who work in the facility. “Two of the driving forces behind the design of this whole building were ‘way-finding’ and using natural light,” said Baxter, director of the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital. “Corridors and specialty areas are all interconnected, so that it is easy for people to find their way through the building.” One common denominator to aid those who must quickly navigate the 300,000-grosssquare-foot facility (including classroom space) is natural light, much of which will emanate from glass on three sides of the building, overlooking a courtyard. Those same three sides of the building could be tapped for later expansion, noted Baxter. “We are very cognizant of trying to minimize the amount of asphalt, etc., and also cognizant of capturing the use of natural light for lighting throughout the hospital,” he said. For the Hospital’s patients and clients, the list of benefits that will come with the new VMLC is immense: The Emergency Room has its own covered entrance, and is separate from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There is space to house in-patients separately from out-patients. Cats can be kept separately from dogs – even in the lobby The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine

and in ICU. Small animals needing physical therapy will have access to a rehabilitation area connected to the Orthopedics service. There are intermediate care and isolation areas for both large animals and small animals. And internal building materials will include special ceiling tiles, and other means, to minimize noises that can disturb patients and disrupt teaching. The entire facility is designed to be versatile, so that it can allow for future expansion as needed. “We are trying to set aside space for new services, such as a future dentistry suite for small animal clients, and perhaps a future nutritional consulting service,” said Baxter. Creating better conditions for patients, clients, as well as for students, faculty and staff, is a recurring theme. “The idea of the separate Emergency entrance came from our trying to avoid mixing day patients and emergencies in the same area,” said Baxter. The new Emergency area has a unique entrance that includes a covered drivethrough/drop-off area. It also has its own waiting area for clients, and examination rooms for emergency patients. Equine clients and their owners can look forward to a new lameness arena that will include a farrier service and day-holding stalls. The lameness center, which is being funded by the UGA Athletic Association, will be a covered arena with multiple diagnostic tools available for evaluating patients. And even this is being designed so that it can accommodate newer technologies as they become available, said Baxter. An ICU for mares and foals, specialized floor surfaces, and more natural light will also benefit patients at the new facility, as will four specialty barns: one each for out-patients, healthy in-patients, ICU, and colic. There will also be a separate area for food animals and small ruminants. One of the four barns has yet to be fully funded, said Kathy Bangle, director of Veterinary External Affairs. “We still need to raise $1 million just to pay for this fourth barn. To help fund this part of the facility, we are providing opportunities to name 40 stalls, at $25,000 each. You can name a stall for your horse, your farm, or for your veterinarian! And, you can pay your pledge over a five-year period. We welcome anyone who is interested to contact our Giving Office, and help us build this barn!” Improved driveways and parking areas, for both small and large animal clients, have been factored in, too. “We have paid a lot of attention to livestock trailer traffic, and our goal is to minimize the need to back-up with a trailer,” said Baxter. “Everything is drive-through, or minimal back-up is required. Also, livestock and equine trailers will be parked separately from other vehicles, near the main entrance for our large animal patients. We will also have a place for clients to leave their trailers, if they wish to do so.” Baxter said the new facility will also be able to offer more outpatient services for small food animal herds, which has been difficult to do, due to space and difficult 2011-12 Annual Report to Donors

access, in our current Hospital. “We plan to have a new chute system that will enable us to handle multiple cattle at one time, as opposed to the single-head of cattle system we’ve had for years.” There will be much more outdoor space for turning out equine and large animal patients, said Baxter. And, there are plans to include a large paddock to house the Hospital’s blood donor horses, which are currently housed off-site and brought to the Hospital as needed. There will be multiple spaces for private consultations between doctors and clients who need to discuss sensitive issues, Baxter said, as well as separate spaces for clients who want a quieter area while they wait. The classroom building will include a dining space that will be open to the public, something that has not been available to clients at our current Hospital. “Clients will have far more opportunities to have a comfortable visit than they do in our current facility,” noted Baxter. DVM students, residents, interns, faculty and staff will benefit from dedicated space, within every service, for conducting rounds, discussing individual cases, to work in small groups, etc., said Baxter. In addition, the courtyard provides an area for having discussions outdoors. There is also emphasis on technologies and areas of the hospital that can be shared between large animal patients and small animal patients, to minimize redundancies. “The linear accelerator will be available to large and small animal patients,” said Baxter; the “linac” currently treats nearly exclusively small animal patients due to space constraints. “Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), interventional radiography – these are all technologies we can place in one area so that they serve our equine patients and our small animal patients,” said Baxter. The facility will have three main entrances that will be demarcated by stone: a main entrance for small animal clients, the Emergency entrance, and the entrance for large animal clients. The façade is expected to be constructed of stone and brick, said Baxter. “Some of the exterior elevations will change in the coming months,” he added, “because we are currently adding a second floor that will house clinical research labs, as well as our Clinical Pathology Laboratory, which serves our Hospital. We were not able to accommodate these areas in our initial construction phase, but were able to add them back in once we got additional private funding that came in during late Fiscal Year 2012.” The VMLC will provide a wonderful place to work and learn for the future of veterinary education in Georgia. Hurley Luper spent his first birthday in the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s ICU, recuperating from immune-mediated polyarthritis. “We were so shaken up and worried, but the veterinary school saved our buddy,” recalled owner David Luper. “Now he is a healthy 3- year-old. He is part of the family, and we can’t thank the hospital’s faculty, staff and students enough for saving him.” Hurley’s photo was selected as one of the top 30 photos, among more than 200 entries, submitted to our “Picture Your Pet Photo Contest” held during summer 2012. H. Brent Collinson’s Golden Retriever, Hudson, enjoys a summer afternoon in his backyard.

Love for Golden Retrievers inspires scholarship endowment H. Brent Collinson, born in 1949, in Greenville, S.C., attended Anderson College for two years, then transferred to the University of Tennessee where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971. In 1973, he moved to Atlanta, and embarked upon a very successful career in real estate. Through the years he has had the opportunity to express his love and passion for all things living, in particular, Golden Retrievers. Collinson has been an ardent volunteer and supporter for Golden Retriever Rescue and other canine rescue operations. Collinson has bequeathed a major portion of his estate be given to the University of Georgia Foundation for the benefit of the College of Veterinary Medicine. He has instructed that these proceeds be used to establish the H. Brent Collinson Endowment in Veterinary Medicine. The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarship support to UGA veterinary students who have a demonstrated financial need and a demonstrated interest in shelter medicine and related care. If the endowment proceeds are sufficient, Collinson would prefer that the scholarship be awarded annually to both a Georgia resident and a South Carolina resident. If the endowment proceeds are not adequate in a given year to provide benefit for two recipients, then he would like the annual award to alternate between recipients from Georgia and South Carolina. Collinson’s love and concern for his Golden Retrievers and the immense heart and dedication these animals have shown to him helped to inspire this gift. While he is not concerned with his legacy, Collinson’s gift certainly inspires the recipients to use their talents and opportunities to make a positive impact on their patients and to make a profound difference in shelter medicine and related animal care.

Good Things Come from Two Birds of a Feather Flocking Together

ho would have guessed that what started out in December 2011, as two birds of a feather flocking together, would result in a gift so generous that it will impact all birds being treated at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital (UGA VTH)? Such is the case with the contribution that Bill and Melanie Kress have donated to the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. The donation was given to help not only build the avian ward for the Zoological Medicine service in the new Veterinary Medical Learning Center (VMLC), but also to create the Bill and Melanie Kress Fund for Wildlife and Zoological Medicine, which will support educational activities for residents, interns and students to learn more about this area of veterinary medicine. Their contribution also includes three other wards: one each for mammals, reptiles and a general ward. “We wanted to donate to the hospital for all the help they give to animals, but we also wanted to help inspire students to learn more in the area of avian medicine,” said Bill Kress, a performing magician by trade. The Kresses, who owned a theatrical supply company, recently retired. The donation stems from the care that the Kresses’ beloved cockatoo, Bugsy, received following an accident, which broke the bird’s wing. “Our family veterinarian, Dr. Don DeLong, looked at the wing and said, ‘You need an expert and the best around is UGA,’ so I got in the

car and headed to Athens,” said Bill Kress. Shortly after Bugsy was admitted and had surgery, she lost a lot of blood and was going downhill quickly. Conveniently, there was a wildlife patient, a barred owl affectionately named Bobo, who was being treated at the same time. Dr. Joerg Mayer, an associate professor of zoological medicine and the lead clinician on the case, suggested a radical treatment: a blood transfusion from Bobo to Bugsy. Blood transfusions between different types of birds are rare, but time was of the essence and Bill Kress authorized the treatment. Bugsy started perking up within minutes of the transfusion and continued improving long enough that they could get another blood donation from a better match, another cockatoo being cared for by

Regular check-ups followed for the next seven months, during which time Bill Kress and Bugsy got to know Mayer and the Zoological Medicine clinicians well. “The entire team at the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital gave so much to us with the health of Bugsy. We wanted to give something back. We did this to help,” said Bill Kress. Bugsy’s accident did not mark the first experience the Kresses had at the UGA VTH. Their cat, Patch, one of five rescue cats that the Kresses have, had been treated at the VTH in 2004 when she was shot. “We were so pleased with the care Patch got there,” said Melanie Kress. “The clinicians really got to know her 27

the funds were going to be matched, we knew the money would go as far as it could,” he added, reflecting on a matching grant that a generous benefactor of the CVM had offered at the time their gift was made. At the heart of the contribution however, is Dr. Joerg Mayer. “This donation was made because of what Dr. Mayer did. Dr. Mayer took the risk and weighed it,” recalled Bill Kress, reflecting on the blood transfusion. “He took a chance with the owl and won. It was an eight-month recovery process with the three of us — Bugsy, Dr. Mayer and me — but Dr. Mayer was the spearhead of everything. And, we think if he could do what he did with the facilities he has now, imagine how much more he can do with more spacious, up-to-date facilities.” The bulk of the donation that the Kresses have made will go toward building an avian ward in the VMLC. Advancements including light monitors, heat sensors, and a room solely for avian patients, are potential

because she was there for several days in ICU, and they were so loving.” The Kresses knew they wanted to donate to the College of Veterinary Medicine, but they weren’t exactly sure at first where their donation would make the most impact. They had left a contribution in their will, but made no stipulation about how it should be spent other than continuing the progress of helping animals. “Children and animals — they are the ones who need us most,” commented Melanie Kress on their guiding philosophy. When they were made aware of the needs of the new hospital, and funds that clinicians and students could use to further their studies in zoological medicine, they decided to advance their plans. “We said to one another, ‘Why not do it now?’ ” recalled Melanie Kress. “They need it now, not at our convenience, and this way we can see what good it’s going toward,” continued Bill Kress. “And, since

features of the new space, which was in final design stages at press time. Mayer is excited about the design for the Zoological Medicine service in the new hospital, and flattered by the donation made in his honor. “The new ward is going to be phenomenal and will be a complete new era,” he said. “Giving the birds their own room is like putting them in a five-star hotel.” “I was just doing my job, but it’s great that Bill and Melanie appreciate my work,” said Mayer. “More than that, though, they made this contribution from the heart, not the wallet, because they truly love animals. Recovery for Lakota

Retired police dog back in good spirits, health

I

t’s been just over a year since Officer Travis Fox and his K-9 partner, Lakota, got into a terrible car crash that almost cost Lakota his life. But thanks to the generous support of donors to the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine’s G.R.A.C.E. Fund, and several surgeries at the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Lakota is back in full stride, getting accustomed to a very different pace of life as a civilian German Shepherd. While the road to recovery has not been easy, Lakota and his owners, Officer Fox and his wife Corey, are glad to see a happy Lakota who is once again able enjoy the simple joys of just being a dog. “He’s doing good,” said Corey Fox. “He’s finally got all of the casts off after multiple surgeries. He’s just now getting back to starting to play ball. He’s becoming happier now that he’s got the casts off. Being still and quiet for him is not something that he could maintain well.” The accident happened on Oct. 3, 2011, in Clayton County, south of Atlanta, while Officer Fox and Lakota were on duty with the Clayton County Police Department. Once news spread that an injured police dog was in need of help, more than $18,000 in donations came in to the College’s canine emergency relief fund, known as the G.R.A.C.E. Fund, and the Fox family began receiving cards, emails and letters of support from people all over the world. That support has never waned, said the Foxes. Lakota has a steady stream of more than 3000 followers on Facebook, many of whom stay in

He even has a T-shirt for sale bearing his image and name. “I knew at first people would care about him,” said Corey Fox. “But there’s not been a week when we haven’t gotten a letter or some sort of support. It’s been very, very touching. It wasn’t like it was a two-week thing. People have become invested and involved with him.” As a pair, Lakota and Officer Fox enjoyed a successful career, with more

than 80 apprehensions and numerous drug arrests. Following their accident, Lakota was retired from the police department and adopted by the Foxes. He now enjoys spending time with the other dogs in the family, including two of his puppies. While he won’t be out working to protect and serve with his former partner anymore, Lakota will be a valuable asset in helping the Foxes with their side business of training other police dogs, said Corey Fox. Officer Fox now works for the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office,

r. Jim Moore doesn’t horse around. At least not when it comes to teaching and research in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Moore is an equine surgeon who has taught in the classroom, the Teaching Hospital and the research laboratory since joining UGA in 1981. He’s best known for collaborating with Thel Melton, Mac Smith and Flint Buchanan to develop The Glass Horse, a 3-D program used internationally to teach about equine gastrointestinal disorders.  “The Glass Horse has completely revolutionized how veterinary students learn about equine gastrointestinal anatomy and colic,” said Vanessa Cook, an associate professor at Michigan State University. “The 3-D technology allows students to visualize what is actually happening in the horse. I use it to teach students about colic. I don’t know how any of them ever understood the complex anatomy of the horse’s gastrointestinal tract before this technology was available.” Moore is dedicated to learning at all levels — ­ from teaching middle and high school students about osmosis with 3-D models, to working with undergraduates in the Honors program, to mentoring post-veterinary school graduate students. He gets the highest praise from his students. “Dr. Moore is just about the best thing since sliced bread,” said a student in a course evaluation. “His lectures were engaging and clear, and his use of visual aids was phenomenal. He’s so approachable.” Moore wants students to enjoy learning the material as much as he enjoys sharing it with them. “I relish opportunities to see them smile or laugh during the process and see the light go on for students who may have had little interest in a particular topic,” he said. “You never know what will grab your interest, and I think it is important for our students to realize that they might find themselves working in areas that never occur to them when they walk in the front door of the college.” Moore admits he’d never touched a horse until his second year of veterinary school — and then was hooked within weeks. He found gastrointestinal diseases fascinating and has since spent his career studying exactly that.

The Lalita and Raghubir Distinguished Professorship

Professorship aims to enhance toxicology research

D

r. Raghubir P. Sharma served as the Dr. Fred C. Davison Distinguished Chair in Veterinary Medicine — a professorship that provided him an opportunity that helped propel his career forward. Now retired as a professor from the CVM Department of Physiology/Pharmacology, Sharma is giving back to the program that guided him to success by pledging to endow a distinguished professorship to help others in their endeavors in the field of toxicology. During his career, Sharma made many advances in the field of toxicology. That distinguished chair position, he said, helped him make waves in the field of toxicology when it was just beginning as a field of study. “I got involved with toxicology about 40 years ago,” said Sharma. “I’ve been in that field since 1969 and at that time, it was a starting field. There were no programs in that area.” Dr. Sharma came to the United States in 1964 after completing his training in veterinary medicine at the University of Rajasthan in his native India. He completed doctoral studies at the University of Minnesota in 1968 and shortly afterward joined the faculty at Utah State University. There, he earned a full professor designation in 1979 and later served as director of the Center for Environmental Toxicology, an interdisciplinary graduate and research program. In 1995, he joined the University of Georgia as the Fred C. Davidson Chair in Physiology and Pharmacology; he retired in 2006. During his long and distinguished career, Dr. Sharma’s research was supported by grants from many institutions, including the National Institutes of Health. His hope in establishing this professorship, he said, is

to facilitate the success of other cutting edge research in toxicology in areas such as molecular toxicology, genetic toxicology, proteomics or metabolomics related to the field, stem cell research, or application of nano-science in toxicology. During his career, Sharma mentored 33 doctoral and 29 master’s students, 14 post-doctoral candidates and a number of exchange scholars. He also edited four books, contributed nearly 50 book chapters and authored or coauthored more than 275 research publications. The professorship, which will be known as The Lalita and Raghubir Sharma Distinguished Professorship,

is named to recognize not only Dr. Sharma, but also his wife of 50-plus years, an ever-supportive and encouraging influence on his success as a researcher. The professorship will require the professor to be engaged in teaching, research, public service or a combination of such duties. Distributions from the fund may be used to provide research or teaching assistance as needed, to cover travel expenses, professional memberships, supplemental salary support, and other expenses that enhance the effectiveness of the distinguished professorship beyond those ordinarily provided by the University.

Dr. Mark Jackwood will be the first to hold the John R. Glisson Professorship in Veterinary Medicine. Jackwood, a molecular virologist known for his work in avian diseases, became head of the Department of Population Health in December 2011.

Grasping the importance of research that helps industry succeed has brought Glisson to a new position. As the director of research for the U.S. Poultry and Egg Harold E. Ford Foundation, he now oversees the administration of grants to researchers in poultry medicine. Despite moving on to a new position, Glisson is still a frequent visitor to PDRC on College Station Road. Being a part of that community and mentoring students, he said, have been the most rewarding aspects of working for UGA. “The people here in this place are a huge part of my life,” he said. “I did it because it’s so much fun to work here. But it’s not just here. It’s because you’re working with the poultry industry. There’s probably no place at the University where more faculty are working with the industry at one time. So that just makes it fun.” And, the caliber of students who enter into the program is remarkable, he added. “They know that this is an opportunity. They know that we can teach them,” he said. “They’re mature. They want to learn. It’s so good just to have those small groups of people who are really just digging and want to know everything. For a person like me, that’s just a godsend. They were those kind of people before they came here. They’re the cream of the crop. And we help them finish becoming what they already were.” The John R. that kind of education to students in the future. that he and his colleague on the neurology faculty, Dr. Marc Kent, have complementary research interests, and similar goals. Both see UGA CVM’s neurology program as a keystone center of excellence for teaching, research, and service to the profession. Both are interested in using technology to teach, as well as to collaborate with practicing veterinary neurologists. Both want to advance their field, and view each case as having the ability to offer something new in how a patient may present, how the illness is diagnosed or treated, or some other aspect of case management. Each case is a unique opportunity for teaching, explains Platt, and each case begins to build a theme for research. “Themes of research at this stage are brain tumors, strokes, and epilepsy,” he says. “We deal with a lot of spinal and brain diseases. But we want to focus on these themes in order to achieve something our treatment center has not achieved before. We want to advance the current standard of diagnosis and the current standard of care. And, we believe this is only going to be possible by collaborating with other centers, particularly at a basic science or human neurological center.” A clinical trial for dogs with gliomas, being conducted in partnership with the Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Neurosurgery, offers a glimpse at how Platt’s work with his colleagues at UGA is helping dogs, and may one day help humans. Gliomas are the most common form of primary brain tumors effecting humans. People who are diagnosed with an aggressive glioma have an average survival time of 9 to 10 months, says Platt. With the help of the Boo Radley Foundation and referring veterinarians, dogs with

gliomas are being identified and enrolled by their owners in a clinical trial that calls for the surgical resection of a glioma, followed by the novel delivery of a single dose of the drug Cetuximab to the tumor’s site. Some of these patients are living a high-quality of life a year after their surgery, reports Platt, whose work on this won him the Pfizer Excellence in Research Award, awarded by the CVM, in 2010. Platt and his counterpart at Emory, Costas G. Hadjipanayis, MD, PhD, were recently awarded a grant from the AKC Canine Health Foundation to continue their study. While research collaborations will benefit both animals and humans, veterinary neurologists must also find more ways to work together in order to create a greater knowledge base about cases and conditions, which will benefit practitioners, students, and patients, predicts Platt. “Multi-center collaborations are likely the future for those of us who practice veterinary neurology,” Platt says, “because we have to address questions that relate to improving the diagnosis and treatment of our diseases

hen the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Neurology and Neurosurgery service saw Petey, a 7-year-old pit bull, for the first time in early September 2011, things were looking grim. He had recently started to have seizures and mentation changes. The news grew even worse after an MRI showed the cause: Petey had a brain tumor. Following an evaluation, neurologist Dr. Simon Platt and resident Dr. Courtenay Freeman realized Petey would be an ideal candidate for a clinical trial being conducted in collaboration with Emory University and funded by the Boo Radley Foundation. The clinical trial is investigating delivery of a medication (Cetuximab) by an infusion method called convection-enhanced delivery (CED) after surgical removal of most of the tumor. This same treatment may be effective for humans with brain tumors. Petey’s owner, Alexander Frame, consented to the clinical trial, Petey Frame’s owner enrolled him in a clinical trial to have and on Sept. 15, 2011, Petey underwent surgery to remove a significant a brain tumor surgically resected, and to treat the tumor portion of the large tumor. Now, more than a year after surgery, Petey remains seizure-free. “Petey is doing quite well!  He’s back to being his old self, and to look at him you’d never know what he’s been through!” his owner, Alexander Frame, told us in August. “I can say that we are very thankful for having Petey with us an entire year after his surgery!” The Neurology and Neurosurgery service recently received a large grant from the AKC Canine Health Foundation for continuation of this study, said Dr. Platt. The group’s first conference, hosted by the UGA CVM later that year, drew about 50 neurologists. To help further their networking goals, the UGA CVM Neurology/Neurosurgery department hosted a two-week “Brain Camp” continuing education course in July 2012, which drew more than 110 veterinary neurologists and residents from the United States and other countries. “Brain Camp” is endorsed by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), and is held every four years, alternating between the U.S. and Europe. Despite his robust teaching and research activities, Platt finds time to be an active member of the ACVIM,

an umbrella group that certifies the veterinary specialties of oncology, internal medicine, cardiology, and, neurology. In 2011, he became president of the ACVIM Neurology Specialty subgroup – a three-year commitment. Now mid-way through his presidency, Platt is making headway on a number of goals that he feels are important to the future of the profession, including strengthening of the synergistic relationship between residency training programs and the board-certification process. As part of this process, Platt helped initiate a job-task survey of all current ACVIM board-certified veterinary neurologists (more than 200) to assess how to improve the neurology board examination and the existing residencies so that the residency programs and the exam are more focused on emphasizing skills that practicing neurologists/neurosurgeons require daily at this current time.

• Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Neurosurgery, to test a new method for delivering the drug Cetuximab to the site of a glioma, immediately following surgical resection of the tumor from the brain. (See sidebar: “Clinical trial saved Petey’s life”)

• The UGA Virtual Experiences Laboratory, based at the UGA College of Engineering, to develop a web-based cranial nerve teaching tool that can be used to teach veterinary students, and to aid veterinary neurologists anywhere, in improving the clinical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of animals with cranial nerve disease. Additionally, this team has also developed a mobile application focused on evaluating animals with head trauma, which will be used for a nationwide clinical trial to assess diagnostics and treatment of head trauma.

Veterinary neurology is a field that will only get more complex, says Platt, because it deals with multiple species, all of which are unique despite the similarities in the neurological diseases they present with, in addition to diagnostics. “We are technically meant to be the people who know how to deal with neurological cases in zoo animals, livestock, equines, cats and dogs. The only way the specialty can advance and offer the public a more expert opinion, as the public is beginning to demand, is for us to become more focused on individual species.”

Babies, bats and battlefields: Nanoscience delivers rapid diagnosis

Laboratory analysis uses genetic amplification, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), or similar techniques to identify pathogens— processes that can take hours to days. And when lives are at stake, that’s not fast enough. Tripp said that he, Zhao and Dluhy sought to mature the technology to detect pathogens with a greater sensitivity, specificity and speed. They employed surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology — a technique that captures the changes in vibration frequency that occur when the light from a laser is scattered off the DNA or RNA of the bacteria or virus. When a laser shines onto the substrate, “the molecular vibrations act as sort of molecular fingerprints,” said Dluhy, who is based at UGA’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. The researchers added a new twist: slides loaded with nanoparticles of gold or silver that enhance the normally weak Raman signal. “We can analyze those fingerprints for particular characteristics, so we can tell if it’s a particular virus or if there’s a particular genetic mutation in that virus,” said Dluhy. But when nanotechology—where technology is much, much smaller, at the scale of one billionth of a meter—is applied to disease and illness, the strides are even bigger, because lives are at stake. Now Tripp hopes to prove that diagnoses can be made not just in a matter of minutes, but at the point of care. To make the case for rapid onsite diagnostics, Tripp is collaborating with Larry Anderson, a professor and pediatrician at Emory University School of Medicine. At Emory, Tripp and Anderson are conducting a clinical study of infants potentially infected with respiratory viruses. “There are lots of things that can cause upper respiratory tract illnesses, from bacteria to viruses or an immune reaction to allergies,” said Tripp. Being able to see right away whether they have just a cold or the more dangerous respiratory syncytial virus would allow doctors to better manage illnesses through appropriate drug delivery and isolation, he said. Anderson is collecting samples taken from infants’ mouths and noses to make diagnoses using PCR. Tripp will use the FirstDefender on the same samples, and they will compare diagnoses to gauge the accuracy of the

handheld device. “This test—if it works with the kind of sensitivity and specificity that we think it will—can be designed in a way that it would be quite quick and simple to do,” said Anderson. “Potentially it’s much cheaper as well. And it could be used in a variety

of settings; it doesn’t require such a sophisticated laboratory as before.”

The availability of a rapid, portable diagnostic device would do more than eliminate the need to send samples from hospitals and doctors’ offices to external laboratories; the technology also can be applied in the field to address threats posed by constantly emerging zoonotic diseases. Among those are the Hendra and Nipah viruses, which have been observed moving from animals to humans in Australia and Malaysia. In collaboration with the Australian Animal Health Laboratories in Queensland, Tripp and UGA colleagues are developing SERS technology to detect these deadly viruses. “Zoonotics is where your public health and your agricultural health really overlap,” said S. Mark Tompkins, associate professor of infectious diseases at the College of Veterinary Medicine. “So having something that’s point-of-care, with rapid identification of a pathogen in any number of scenarios, would be very useful.”

apid diagnostic technology extends beyond human and animal health to food safety. The nanotechnology loaded onto the FirstDefender could identify Salmonella and E. coli bacteria—the number one and number five bacterial causes of foodborne illness, respectively—in food, according to Yiping Zhao. “The first thing is to prevent, to do quality control for the food. The second thing is to know as soon as possible what kind of bacteria caused this disease, and then they can treat it accordingly,” said Zhao. Current codes on food safety stipulate that inspectors take samples from meat and poultry processing plants to a USDA regional testing laboratory. The FirstDefender would allow inspection to occur in food processing plants or even on the farm, stopping bacterial outbreaks before they start. Zhao also sees applications for the technology in the food service industry. “In the future, maybe you’ll go to a fast-food restaurant and get a burger, which we could test for bacteria right there. If we can do that, then it’d be perfect,” said Zhao.

Tompkins received a 2012 Fulbright U.S. Senior Scholarship to research the Hendra and Nipah viruses; his research is being conducted at the Australian Animal Health Labs. Both Hendra and Nipah viruses are carried by fruit bats. In Australia, Hendra is transmitted to horses exposed to bat urine on fruit and trees, and though very rare, can be transmitted through close contact with humans. Hendra has resulted in the deaths of more than 50 horses and at least one human. Nipah outbreaks—believed to originate from infected bat urine on dates consumed by pigs and people—killed more than 20 humans in 2011. Tripp, Tompkins and their colleagues aim to detect the viruses on tarps that are placed under trees where the bats feed or roost to collect their waste, simplifying the surveillance process.

For 25 consecutive years, Dr. Horner has faithfully contributed to the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. Why? “Because I went there, graduated and practiced veterinary medicine. I got a good education that enabled me to work at something I loved, and I was able to support my family,” he said.

The fund will be used to help educate veterinary students, clinical residents, and the public about pet overpopulation concerns and how to operate efficient animal shelters. “The reason that we chose the University of Georgia was because in talking to Dean Allen, she seemed to understand the problems that exist in rural counties,” said Richard Lang. “McIntosh County is extremely rural, and, in many instances, poor.” In 2006, a group of CVM students founded the College’s Shelter Medicine Club. Club members and faculty work together to develop relationships with shelter professionals in Georgia and the surrounding region, and the students seek out volunteer opportunities. Since 2009, the club has hosted an annual workshop for shelter professionals, and students interested in shelter medicine.

Horses were always an integral part of the Horners’ lives, he noted. “As a family, horses were both our business and our family hobby. My wife, Lynne, was a very successful hunter-jumper horse trainer, and our two girls rode in shows all over the Northeastern, Midwest and Southeastern United States, and they were very successful. They also won at every top indoor show in the country.” For Dr. Horner, giving to the institution where he earned his veterinary degree is a pay-it-forward and deeply-personal experience.

The College does not yet have a formal shelter medicine program, but it has worked to expand shelter medicinerelated lectures and course offerings to students, and to help interested students find external learning and volunteer opportunities. The CVM’s goal for educating students about shelter medicine is similar to the goal the Langs have for their area: to raise awareness of the problems associated with shelter animals, pet overpopulation, animal welfare, and the roles veterinarians can play in addressing these issues. While the Lang Shelter Medicine Endowment will not be officially established for some time, the CVM’s work with the Langs and H.A.R.T. has already begun. Beginning this year, CVM students interested in shelter medicine are able to participate in externships at the shelter in McIntosh County. (Shelter externships in other areas of Georgia and the region are available to the students, too.) 44

“Giving is a personal thing,” he said. “If you get something worthwhile out of anything, I feel you should, in turn, give back.”

“If we can make a difference here and show that it can be done, maybe our efforts will inspire others to do the same,” said Richard Lang. In addition to establishing a lasting relationship between the CVM and McIntosh County, the Langs hope their work with H.A.R.T and the CVM will encourage future generations to continue efforts to reduce domestic animal overpopulation. “That’s why we’re leaving our estate to UGA,” said Richard Lang. “This is meant to perpetuate the endowment. We knew we could do that by leaving our estate to the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine.” – Story by Jessica Luton
