Ingredion launches new rice-based NOVATION® starches for superior texture stability in foods Ingredion is extending its broad portfolio of clean label ingredients to 30 products with the launch of two multifunctional starches.

Dear business partners, Welcome to the last edition of tradetrends for the year 2016, in which we have two special features: to begin with, this is the first issue that will also be published in English as a PDF. In this way, we aim to acknowledge the growth trajectory and associated internationalization of The NRC Group. You are welcome to access this issue with the help of your contact partner, or by visiting the Infocenter on our homepage. The current issue also contains a large Special Events section that details many of the new products specific to the K trade fair, taking place in mid-October. In The NRC Group, we have viewed not only this summer’s past European football tournament through the lens of “Partnership Wins

Derived from rice, NOVATION 8300 and NOVATION 8600 starches enable manufacturers to develop on-trend, consumer-winning recipes with indulgent textures and a consumer preferred simple ‘rice starch’ label on the ingredients list. UNI-PURE®-starches

TOCOBIOL® Clean Label

Functional carriers from natural polymers: UNI-PURE® starches for pharmaceuticals

A natural antioxidant to increase shelf-life

Ingredion has developed multifunctional carriers that comply with local pharmaceuticals legislation and can therefore be used worldwide. The NRC Group sells its products in Germany and Poland.

In addition to products for the cosmetics and pharmaceuticals divisions, The NRC Group’s portfolio also contains food additives from BTSA. One particular highlight is the vegetable oil extract TOCOBIOL® Clean Label, a new natural antioxidant that is extremely versatile.

Starches and starch derivatives are popular excipients for the manu facture of solid peroral dosage products such as tablets, capsules or sachets. For this reason, Ingredion has developed multifunctional carriers that comply with local pharmaceuticals legislation and can therefore be used worldwide. The ultrapure, native and pregelatinized starches of the UNI-PURE® range work well as binding agents in the production of tablets and granulates and can also be utilized as fillers, disintegrants and glidants.

TOCOBIOL® Clean Label is a tocopherol-based natural antioxidant that is obtained from distillates of deodorized vegetable oil (non-GMO). It was developed by BTSA to meet the industry demand for clean label ingredients. TOCOBIOL® Clean Label is an outstanding product to protect food and nutritional supplements, preserve their active ingredients and increase shelf stability. It has absolutely no effect on the color or smell of final products.

UNI-PURE® starches are very well compatible with most active substances, while at the same time demonstrating excellent compressibility and good flow properties. The wide array of multifunctional starch excipients that Ingredion offers is also suitable for use in nutritional supplements. Distribution in Germany and Poland.

NRC Group & Lallemand: brand-new partners for already established products The partnership between The NRC Group and Lallemand has been made official: the world’s leading supplier of yeast and bacteria is looking to further expand its standing in the cultures business. For this reason, it has decided to partner with quality distributor The NRC Group. The Canadian company Lallemand has further expanded its specialty cultures division by acquiring the surface and ripening cultures business of DSM Food Specialties. Since May 2016, the former DSM division has been firmly integrated in Lallemand’s company structure. The new range comprises surface and ripening strains from molds, yeast and bacteria for soft cheese and fermented meats, as well as more than a total of 100 commercial products, e.g. VELV-TOP, FLAV-ANTAGE or Meat Ripening and

Its high antioxidant power is the result of the synergy between its active ingredients (tocopherol, squalene and sterols), all of which are naturally present in the product. By blocking free radicals, TOCOBIOL® Clean Label protects fats and oils against oxidative rancidity. The clean label product has many applications that include meat products, snacks and cereals, chocolate, seasonings, soups and sauces as well as baby food. TOCOBIOL® Clean Label is available as a water-dispersible powder or as oil-soluble liquid, both based on either IP-soybean or sunflower. Distributed in Germany.

Meat Surface. The NRC Group is incorporating these into its broad portfolio and will be in charge of distribution in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Lallemand Specialty Cultures (LSC) develops and produces specialty cultures for food applications and supports the bacteria production plants of the Lallemand Group with both product development and process optimization. LSC already maintains its own bacteria production facility in Saint Simon, France, and the French DSM plant in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre now belongs to Lallemand as well, following the DSM specialty cultures acquisition. LSC has extensive plans to improve technology there, in addition to planning larger investments for research and development. Through its company structure and experience in the fermentation field, the Canadian company guarantees the efficient transfer of business, smooth and reliable delivery and the best possible customer service. NRC’s HI&I seminar: a successful premiere Nordmann, Rassmann GmbH conducted an HI&I seminar for the first time on 1 June. Held at the InterCity Hotel in Frankfurt am Main, distribution specialists and suppliers came together to outline practical tips concerning materials and their use in the household, industrial and institutional fields (HI&I). The events and seminars hosted by Nordmann, Rassmann GmbH are always met with enthusiasm by customers and suppliers alike. The expert lectures give participants new inspiration for their work while also providing information about innovations and opportunities with suppliers. This was also true of the HI&I seminar, at which the Hamburg-based distributor was supported by several of its most important suppliers in these industries.

After a brief round of introductions, Elementis opened the event with a presentation explaining how to improve rheology with raw materials from their company portfolio. Stepan, another supplier, followed with a talk entitled ‟Biocides: Stepan frame formulations as a solution for customers to go stress-free through BPR disinfecting hard surface cleaners for PT 2+4”, in which frame formulations for disinfectant cleaners were discussed. Next, representatives from AB Enzymes spoke about the role of enzymes and how they can have a positive impact on the effectiveness of cleansing agents. In the panel that followed, TechnicoFlor presented a selection of perfumes and fragrances for HI&I applications and sketched out the trends and challenges found within this market. The Nordmann, Rassmann staff gave a concluding talk about hybrid formulations with respect to the current market demands on these particular products. Overall, the first edition of the HI&I seminar was very well received in Frankfurt. ”The feedback given at the end of the seminar was entirely positive. Above all, participants commended the professional expertise of the presenters as well as the current relevance of the topics,” remarked Sandra Iris Spiegelberger, Business Manager of Personal Care and HI&I at Nordmann, Rassmann GmbH. ”This will definitely not be the last event of its kind.”

Revealing the power of vitamins for cosmetics According to a recent study, German women in particular look first and foremost at vitamin content when purchasing cosmetics. DSM, partner to The NRC Group, supplies a broad selection of additives suitable for the personal care sector. In Germany, vitamin content represents the most crucial selling point in cosmetics. This finding comes as a result of the latest survey from Mintel, the world’s leading market intelligence agency. According to their research, 50% of respondents indicated that a product’s listed vitamin content was the driving factor behind a positive purchase decision. Following that, Q10 (37%) and hyaluronic acid (35%) content were also important. That vitamins are used at all in the production of cosmetics is due to the pioneering work of DSM in the fields of science and application. For the skin, sun and hair care markets as well as many other industries, the company provides standard vitamins as well as specialties. The advantage of these additives is clear: vitamin A alone (available as a palmitate in 1.0 million IU/g and 1.7 million IU/g) counteracts premature skin aging to leave skin feeling fresh and pleasant.

a low level of nicotinic acid that prevents any unpleasant skin sensations. STAY-C® 50 is also a nutrient of many talents and works extremely well to combat nearly every skin care issue – from acne to UV-induced damage. In Japan, STAY-C® 50 is even an approved quasi-drug active ingredient for whitening products. The powerful vitamin demonstrates synergistic antioxidant effects when combined with vitamin E and its derivatives. In addition to the individual vitamin additives that are available, The NRC Group also has two of DSM’s vitamin blends in its portfolio: BeauPlex® VH and RADIANCE CR. Consisting of vitamins B3, B5, B6, C and E, BeauPlex® VH has notable protective effects and is suitable for use in skin as well as hair care products. The patented RADIANCE CR vitamin blend, however, is a combination of vitamin C (STAY-C® 50) and biotin. Studies show that its use reduces the appearance of age spots and wrinkles.

DSM’s vitamin B3 (Niacinamide PC) is a true jack of all trades: it can be used to treat dry and sensitive skin and it also produces a positive effect on acne. Its skin-lightening effects also help with the removal of unwanted pigmentation spots and balancing uneven skin tones. Last but not least, studies show outstanding anti-wrinkle effects. With Niacinamide PC, DSM offers a unique product which has

Long-lasting color protection

Focus on MOAH-free cosmetics

A new formulation has made long-lasting color protection possible: The NRC Group’s experts have developed a promising new combination of ingredients that significantly prolongs color retention in artificially colored hair. More and more people dye their hair on a regular basis. What ever color selected – rich choco late brown, deep cherry or ruby red, or perhaps a coppery tone instead – hair dyes are available in a wide array of hues and price categories. But one thing they should all do is allow the hair to shine in the chosen shade for as long as possible. The NRC Group’s team of experts took up this issue and successfully developed a formulation to preserve hair color intensity.

bination of conventional and innovative new ingredients. Silsoft™ Q PMF silicone is used to ensure the desired protection of color while helping to add volume and produce a soft feel on both wet and dry hair. Multifunctional vitamins panthenol and phytantriol are fused with omega-6 fatty acids extracted from red tomato seed oil to provide further support. This particular combination cares for and protects hair, above all preserving the intensity of the chosen color.

As the name suggests, our “Color Protection Cream” sample formulation is a rinse-off hair conditioner that supports long-lasting, deep coloration of the hair – all with a light, creamy texture. The secret of this formulation? The com-

Conventionally-produced, crude oil-based medical white oils are commonly used as alternatives to vegetable oils in the cosmetics industry, as they approximate the same properties as their natural counterparts while generally being less likely to cause allergic reactions. However, these oils contain aromatic hydrocarbons, or MOAH (mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons) for short.

Silsoft™ Q PMF was tested by a leading silicone manufacturer, Momentive, regarding its ability to preserve color. The result? The silicone provides outstanding color protection before, during and after the dyeing process.

120

l tro

In cosmetics, medical white oils leave the skin feeling soft and smooth, making them a popular ingredient in applications such as lip care products. Conventional oils based on crude oil, on the other hand, contain MOAH compounds which are suspected to cause cancer. Shell, partner to The NRC Group, now pro vides the cosmetics industry with an innovative alternative: its Ondina X range.

By contrast, the innovative range of Ondina X white oils is produced from natural gas using gas to liquids (GTL) technology. For this reason, Ondina X offers a solution to the MOAH issue and is already being used in a variety of different cosmetic products such as massage and baby oils, moisturizers or lip care products. Ondina X 415 and 420 have been tested for MOAH content and showed values below the limit of detection set by the Kirchhoff Institute at 10 mg per kilogram. In comparison, an in-house study conducted by Shell showed that conventional medical white oils made from crude oil contain between 100 and 800 mg per kilogram of MOAH. Another advantage of Ondina X 415 and 420 is their new INCI name; on packaging, both products are labeled as C18-C50 Iso-Paraffin. Unlike Paraffinum Liquidum (INCI), which is normally the term for medical white oils, C18-C50 Iso-Paraffin is still unfamiliar to consumers and therefore does not cause a negative response. For those companies that do not wish to change the design of their packaging, however, Shell can provide Ondina X 432 with the customary INCI name. This meets the extremely strict purity requirements of the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry as well as the guidelines set by Cosmetics Europe (formerly “COLIPA”) in their 14th recommendation entitled “Mineral Hydrocarbons in Oral and Lip Care”. Ondina X 432’s MOAH content amounts to an approximate 60 mg per kilogram, which is significantly lower than that of conventional white oils. Lipex L‘sens™

“For every body“: the right skin care for any age As part of the new “Silky Skin from Top to Toe“ campaign, AAK is offering personal care products for every day, every age and every skin type. The NRC Group is distributing AAK’s portfolio in Europe. The issue of skin moisturization is still an incredibly popular one with consumers – and many cosmetics suppliers respond accordingly. According to a study by market research agency Mintel, 3,661 products were brought onto the market within a period of merely six months – and over 70% of these were creams declared to have ”moisturizing“ effects. AAK has now picked up on this trend and initiated a major campaign to introduce ingredients for “silky skin from top to toe“. Their natural oils and emollients – used in creams, lotions and balms – supply the skin with plenty of moisture.

Lipex L‘sens™ can be used in products for consumers of any age, with e.g. creams and lotions for the target group of the so-called “over 50s” – which represents the fastest growing market segment – providing an additional smoothing effect on the skin. It’s true: Lipex L‘sens™ is “for every body“.

which to create formulations for personal care products, leaving a delicate and luxuriously smooth film on the skin while also stabilizing the texture of the finished product. The highly pure ingredient is readily biodegradable and environmentally non-toxic, and combining Lipex L‘sens™ with other natural emollients and emulsifiers is also simple. Lipex L‘sens™ was proven to improve the skin barrier in an in vivo study, with results showing the optimum concentration of the emollient to be around 6%.

A special product highlight is the plant-based Lipex L‘sens™ (INCI: Soybean Glycerides (and) Butyrospermum Parkii Butter Unsaponifiables), which contains 5-7% unsaponifiables from shea butter. It is an excellent emollient with Distributed in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland.

Antioxidants? Naturally! BTSA, a longstanding partner to The NRC Group, is a globally operating manufacturing company located in Spain that specializes in the development and production of natural antioxidants, natural vitamin E and natural omega-3 fatty acids. With over 20 years of experience and acquired expertise, BTSA Europe is a leading manufacturer and supplier of natural antioxidants, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids. BTSA‘s products are used in food and cosmetics, as well as the pharmaceutical field. The company’s products are all completely free of GMO and allergens, are not tested on animals and have also been awarded multiple certifications, e.g. by ECOCERT and COSMOS. BTSA offers natural antioxidants under the trademarks TOCOBIOL® and BIOXAN®, both of which stabilize/extend the shelf-life of formulations. The reason for having two different product names is because there are two different bases:

and Squalen. It blocks free radicals and thus has a high antioxidant effect even at low concentrations. TOCOBIOL® C is used in e.g. anti-aging formulations, lotions, moisturizing oils, lipsticks or in hair care products. BIOXAN® T is a blend of all four types of tocopherol and also extremely effective at low concentrations. Its INCI name is Tocopherol and it is available in four different concentrations: 30, 50, 70 or 90%.

BIOXAN® E blocks free radicals and raises moisture levels in the skin, prevents wrinkles and has anti-inflammatory as well as healing properties. It therefore acts as an active substance for the skin and not as an antioxidant to stabilize oils or fats in formulations. Above all, BIOXAN® E is frequently used in daytime skin care, anti-aging products, sun and after-sun care as well as skin protection applications.

TOCOBIOL® C and BIOXAN® T both have no influence on the color or fragrance of finished products.

Natural omega-3 oils for skin care BTSA’s third family of raw materials are its ECOCERTcertified omega-3 oils, marketed under the trademarks ECOFLAX® C and BIOMEGA-TECH®. ECOFLAX® C is a flaxseed oil (INCI name: Linum usitatissimun Oil) which is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (>45%) and used as a moisturizer in several personal care products.

Healthy, fresh skin with natural vitamin E Compared to synthetic vitamin E, natural vitamin E has a higher level of biological activity that allows it to be better absorbed by the skin and remain longer in the human body. Cyclodextrins – genuine jacks of all trades Discovered over a century ago, cyclodextrin (CD) is now more innovative than ever before. WACKER Chemie AG, one of The NRC Group’s long-standing partners, produces all three types of cyclodextrin (alpha, beta und gamma) as well as cutting-edge cyclodextrin complexes. Cyclodextrin consists of glucose molecules that receive and bind other organic substances into an internal hydrophobic cavity. When used in cosmetics, cyclodextrins are genuine jacks of all trades: increasing the water solubility of lipophilic materials, reducing or eliminating unpleasant odors and converting oily or liquid substances to powder form for better processing. Additionally, skin irritation can be diminished or even prevented by using cyclodextrin. Improved Solubility Cosmetic ingredients such as plant-based oils, lipophilic vitamins and preservatives are virtually insoluble in water. However, they can build inclusion complexes with CDs and thereby become more soluble – unlike pure compounds. This complexation can be used to an advantage e.g. with retinol in anti-wrinkle creams. In products that contain self-tanning agents, dihydroxya ceton is frequently used as an active ingredient; however, this has an unpleasant odor that is difficult to mask even with perfumes. Cyclodextrins receive and eliminate the unwanted smell. CDs can also help with disagreeable body odors, as they are able to interact and build complexes with the various scent components that are present in sweat and bodily secretions. Consequently, CDs

prevent unpleasant odors from even forming – making them especially popular in deodorants. Anti-acne effect Beta-cyclodextrin can form a complex with the poly unsaturated fatty acids found in sebum, prevent their oxida tion and inhibit the formation of radicals. For this reason, CDs are used preferentially in acne treatments.

WACKER has all three natural cyclodextrins in its portfolio. CAVAMAX® W6 Pharma is alpha-cyclodextrin that effects the encapsulation of small molecules and has an additional emulsifying effect when combined with oils. CAVAMAX® W7 Pharma, a beta-CD, is primarily used with mediumsized compounds such as menthol to create a cooling effect on the skin and provide a vitalizing sense of freshness. Fats and oils, which have larger molecules, can be stabilized and received with gamma-cyclodextrin CAVAMAX® W8 Pharma. Apart from their pure cyclodextrin products, WACKER also supplies retinol, d-alpha-tocopherol and coenzyme Q10 in capsule form. With cyclodextrin shells, these capsules provide a distinct advantage: protecting the active substances contained from both light and oxidation, making them fundamentally more stable. This in turn makes new forms of application possible. One of Wacker’s latest developments is the first natureidentical hydroxytyrosol: HTEssence®. This product ensures the higher production of pheomelanin, which lightens the skin. HTEssence® also combats the effects of harmful free radicals, making it a perfect additive for anti-aging products. A recent study also shows that HTEssence® is extremely effective in hair care products and keeps both natural hair colors (created by melanin) and artificially colored hair from fading, in that HTEssence® protects hair from the effects of UV radiation. Superior quality and luxurious hair care products can therefore also be formulated with hydroxytyrosol.

STEPANPOL® PC-5130-160

ASK Chemicals supplies alkyd resin emulsions, carbon fibers and phenolic resins

Polyester-polyether resin for 2C high performance adhesives and binders

ASK Chemicals, partner to The NRC Group, offers solutions for high-grade applications – but not only in the paints and coatings business. With nearly 40 years of experience in the market, the company has amassed extensive expertise in the widely varied field of binder technology and other specialties. ASK Chemicals is a manufacturer of binders for the paints and coatings industries that supplies customers milled, chopped or graphitized carbon fibers called DONACARBO. Sourced from Japan, these products are used to manufacture antistatic or conductive coatings such as warehouse and industrial flooring. Their short fiber lengths make it simple to incorporate them into plastic matrixes. Phenolic resins from ASK Chemicals are used chiefly in the formulation of baking ena mels. With their excellent chemical resistance and good adhesion, many products can even be used to formulate coatings that conform to EU 10/2011 regulations for food contact. ASKOFEN R 9600 also has a significantly lower free formaldehyde content that allows coatings to be formulated with values of under 0.1%. Other fields of application in clude the manufacture of friction linings and bonding agents for textile fibers in the rubber and tire industries. Where aqueous alkyd resin emulsions are concerned, ASK Chemicals supplies environmentally-friendly solutions for coatings and paints with exceptional properties. These are fundamentally free of co-solvents, exhibiting extraordinarily good shear strength and impressively high gloss. Creating aqueous paints and coatings with extraordinary properties NECOWEL 700 is a polyester polyol which is ideally suited to formulating aqueous two-component polyurethane paints. Combined with aliphatic isocyanate-based hardeners, coatings can be developed that feature outstanding gloss and body as well as good weather and

chemical resistance. These systems also demonstrate a very high threshold for blistering, which means excellent processing reliability for users. NECOWEL 700’s good resistance to solvents and chemicals make e.g. graffiti quick and easy to remove with the usual aggressive cleaning agents. One special product highlight from ASK Chemicals is NECOWEL 4300, a cationically modified alkyd emulsion for the production of stain-blocking paints. As conventional resin dispersions do not exhibit any blocking properties towards bleeding substances, this kind of contamination can often be transported to the paint surface through several layers of paint. However, ASK Chemicals has succeeded in integrating cationic groups into a more or less anionic alkyd resin system – the result of which is a stable resin system with an outstanding ability to block impurities such as wood contents, nicotine, water stains and many more. NECOWEL 4300 also features simple handling and excellent compatibility with other tinting pastes, e.g. paint raw materials and fillers. Copolymer emulsions based on NECOWEL FLE are perfectly suitable for formulating highly-porous wood stains and wood care products such as teak oils and wood preservatives. The low viscosity of the copolymer results in very good wetting of the wood fiber and high penetrating power into the wood surface. In turn, this creates very good grain accentuation of the wood fiber. The visual appearance is identical to that of solvent-based systems, with the advantage that NECOWEL products are completely VOC-free and therefore meet all the requirements for environmental friendliness.
