The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time………………………………………June 19th, 2016 2 2017 MASS BOOK IS OPEN The 2017 Mass Book is now open. Masses can be booked for the year 2017 at St. John the Baptist, Sacred Heart, and Our Lady of Knock. As always, we will do our best to accommodate the date you request; dates are always subject to change. Please call or visit either parish office to schedule a Mass intention. HOLY DOOR AT OUR LADY OF KNOCK SHRINE Whenever you visit the shrine, why not enter through the holy door? Each time you enter through the Holy Door (but only once a day), and recite the Creed in the shrine, as well as pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for the intentions of the pope, and receive Communion worthily (the Sacrament of Reconciliation should have been celebrated within the previous week or two) you can gain a plenary indulgence either for yourself or for the soul of a specific deceased soul. A plenary indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment (purgatory) that we deserve because of our sins. Please follow the Year of Mercy: https://sites.google.com/site/ourladyofknock nyholydoor/ YEAR OF MERCY PARISH MISSION St. John the Baptist Church will welcome Father Tom Sullivan of the Fathers of Mercy to offer a retreat for the people of St. John’s, Sacred Heart, and Our Lady of Knock from July 16th through the 21st. Father Tom Sullivan is one of the priests officially commissioned by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, as a missionary preacher for the Jubilee Year of Mercy! In addition to preaching all of the Masses during the weekend of July 16th and 17th, Father will offer the morning Mass each day from the 18th through the 21st. All of the weekday Masses from July 18th through 21st will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist

Church at 9:00 a.m. In the evening sessions from July 17th through 21st, beginning at 6:00 p.m., Father will focus especially on St. Padre Pio and St. Teresa of Calcutta. Confession will be available each evening as well as refreshments. Please plan to join us!

HOURS OF MERCY Every Friday until the conclusion of the Jubilee Year of Mercy (November 20th), there will be a holy hour at Our Lady of Knock Shrine beginning at 3:00 p.m. The hour will include Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, a reflection by Father Flannery or Father Motta, and Benediction. Either Father Flannery or Father Motta will also be available during that time for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

PROUD OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE You may remember that St. John the Baptist Church hosted Hard As Nails in April, a retreat for high school age youth. As a fruit of that retreat, Annie Koerner-Fox, a graduating high school senior and active parishioner and catechist from Sacred Heart Church, applied and was accepted to give almost a year of her life to lay missionary work with the Hard As Nails Ministry Team. What a sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our community that so many young people are answering

The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time………………………………………June 19th, 2016 3 various calls to better serve our Lord. (Recall that next month two of our young people, Ryan Graudons and Michalina Kulesza will participate in World Youth Day in Poland with Pope Francis!) Annie will address our parishes at all of the Masses on the weekend of July 2nd and 3rd and solicit material assistance for her year with Hard As Nails. In addition the Knights of Columbus will host a spaghetti and meatball dinner for Annie on Wednesday evening, July 6th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tickets will be available very soon for $10.00 per person. All proceeds will go towards Annie’s participation in the Hard As Nails Missionary experience. Please be as generous as you are able! Thank you and God bless you! (To learn more about Hard As Nails visit www.hanm.org.) HOLY LAND GIFTS FOR SALE Louie, our friend from the Holy Land, will be here June 25th 26th after all of the Masses at Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Knock, and St. John the Baptist. You are encouraged to check out the beautiful olive wood religious item. Christians in Bethlehem have supported their families for many years by selling these beautiful works. Now they are facing many challenges due to the terrible situation and the lack of pilgrims visiting the holy land. These hardships have caused these families to flee, searching for income to feed their families. This art work gives Christians in Bethlehem a chance to survive. Just think about this: in 1982 Catholic Christians in the Holy Land constituted 18% of the total population; today you would be surprised to know there they are only 2% and their future is uncertain. Come and take a look at these works. You may find something that interests you or a gift for someone else. Your generosity towards hardworking Catholics will help to protect the holy site and insure a Catholic presence in the Holy Land for future generations. God Bless you all. Visit www.bethlehemwoodcarving-louie.com for more information. Checks and credit cards

will be accepted at the sale.

CONSOLING THE HEART OF JESUS

A Do-It-Yourself Retreat It’s not too late to join fellow parishioners and Father Flannery in experiencing Consoling the Heart of Jesus: ADo-It-Yourself Retreat! Based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, author Father Michael Gaitley, M.I.C. calls souls to trust in the Divine Mercy of Jesus. The hazy, lazy days of summer and the Jubilee Year of Mercy provide the prefect background for such a retreat. The retreat requires some minimal reading on each participant’s own and then assembling once a week for a video from Father Gaitley and conversation among the participants and Father Flannery. The next meeting will take place this Thursday, June 23rd, at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Community Center, adjacent to Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham, and we will continue meet on the ten subsequent Thursdays, all at 6:30 p.m., all at the St. Mary’s Community Center. Please join us!

VOLUNTEER NEEDED So many wonderful things happen in our parishes all of the time! It would be a great value to have a parishioner or two, who accepted the responsibility of notifying our diocesan newspaper, The Evangelist, or when appropriate, other media outlets. If you are interested in this ministry, please call either parish office. Thank you!

The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time………………………………………June 19th, 2016 4

THE VALUE OF VOLUNTEERS (from The Evangelist, June 18, 2016) St. Cecelia’s parish in Fonda had a poignant and pointed announcement in its bulletin: “For our parish to survive, and more importantly, to thrive, volunteers are desperately needed in many areas. No matter what your individual talents are, we can use them! If it is possible for you to do more than attend Mass and contribute financially, please make a commitment of your time and talent to our parish.” This weekend alone, a call is printed in this weekend’s bulletin to help with the Sacred Heart Family Fun Day, and to volunteer as a public relations assistant for St. John’s, Sacred Heart, and the shrine, and for Vacation Bible School. Please consider regularly ways that you can assist in building up our local family of faith.

A NOTE FROM FRAN O’CONNELL I wish to give thanks for the many years Ed and I had, living in Cairo and attending Sacred Heart/Our Lady of Knock Shrine. On September 28th, 2015, my beloved Ed went home to his Eternal Father. Our many years in the Catskills are filled with the blessings and memories of our dear friends, our blessed parish, our beautiful home, family visits, and all the special events we were able to take part in. I wish to thank all the members of the parish and friends who prayed for Ed, sent Mass cards, called and even traveled to visit Ed and me in Saint Augustine. On Father's day, June 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart, Mass will be offered for Ed, lovingly requested by the Sacred Heart choir. My family and I will be attending the Mass and will be looking forward to

seeing some of our dear friends. May God Bless you all! FROM THE SACRED HEART – OUR LADY OF KNOCK RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE

BABY BOTTLE DRIVE Every year the St. Mary's/Sacred Heart Respect Life Committee, along with many other parishes and pro-life communities, promotes a baby bottle drive for the ALIGHT Center in Hudson. The ALIGHT Center provides medical, emotional, and material help to women in crisis pregnancies, who might otherwise abort their children. Here is a concrete way that you can become materially supportive in the saving of a human life created for all eternity. Jesus urged us not to save up treasures on earth, but rather to work for those of Heaven. How much do you think a human life is worth to our Lord? This weekend baby bottles will be available in the back of each church. Please take one home, fill it with spare change and return it to church by Labor Day weekend. Thank you and may God Bless you!

Minekill offers amazing things for people of all ages. There are hiking trails that are very short and easy, and some that are more difficult. There are multiple playgrounds, as well as ample room to just run around and play. There are large tents and many picnic tables that have been reserved for our group.
